[EDIT: one day after & based on my partner's input: I'd give this place 2.5 if I could & I will return to Gyro King to give them another chance, in case they were just having a bad day]. I'm not a hater, as I try to find the positive in most things (especially food). And a confession: Gyro King used to be my favorite place for Mediterranean food in the City. I don't know when the ownership changed, but I probably haven't been there in over a year. Today my companion and I got take-out and once we got home, it broke my heart. For the simple reason that the price spiked upward and the portion size & food quality spiked downward.
Today, we got the Appetizer Combo Plate with Pita Bread, as well as a Lamb & Beef Gyro Wrap. For the Combo, the hummus, baba ganoush & ezme were still tasty & great. The dolma wasn't bad either. The tzatziki and potato salad were just OK. The so-called "Homemade" Pita Bread was awful, having a cake-like spongy softness (in texture, kinda like Wonder bread), where before it was more firm and was my favorite part of the Combo. The single falafel ball was cold, tasteless and hard as a rock. Probably had been sitting around all day.
The Lamb/Beef Wrap was OK, but not worth the new higher price. My eating companion thought the lavash bread was dry, tasted old, making it too chewy.
That all said, we won't be back unless the food is fresh and warm again. Sure, inflation is making food everywhere more expensive, but it's not worth paying higher prices for mediocre Mediterranean cuisine. All this saddens me because I used to go to Gyro King nearly every time I visited the SF Library's main branch across the street.
