I've had falafel at many places, but never with sesame on the crust. It added a nice bit of crunch and made the texture more interesting. The outside was perfectly crispy, though the inside was a bit undercooked for my liking. It didn’t ruin the flavor, but I prefer a slightly firmer texture inside. They also sprinkled sesame seeds on the pita, which was a great touch. The bread was fresh, neatly presented, and sliced.

Google
Came highly recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. Falafels are top quality. Service was excellent. Lots of seating and even an outlet to charge my phone. Good lighting, clean, spacious. Restroom for customers. I got the vegan falafel wrap deluxe. My personal preference is to have more vegetables in the wrap like more tomato, red onion, cucumber, and yogurt to introduce more flavors like tartness, sharpness, and brightness but I can also see how I got the max falafel in a wrap possible, which is great value too. I looked back at the menu and saw ingredients listed included all the things I was wishing there were more of, including eggplant, but I don’t remember tasting much of this when I ate the wrap and would personally prefer an altered ratio with more vegetables but that’s just me. Would go back and recommend to friends. Falafel wrap was a great size- see my picture comparing it to a glass of water! Right next to the Orpheum theater so it’s a great idea to grab a bite before or after a show here (that’s what we did)!

Google
I'm not exaggerating, this is/was BY FAR the best food I've had in a LONG time. AMAZING staff super kind, welcoming and informative. I HIGHLY recommend eating here you'll be happy you did.

Google
The Lamb Shank was suggested to me instead of my usual Adana kebab wrap. Boy was I glad for the suggestion! This was today’s special item. Excellent! The meat was tender enough to literally fall off the bone. Fabulous dish!

Google
Great food and atmosphere, staff very nice. The Turkish tea and baklava is really good. I also had the beef lamb gyro plate and loved it.

Google
Terrific place to grab a quick bite before our matinee at the Orpheum. We both got the lamb & beef gyro wrap since we didn't want to bring leftovers to the theater. It was filled with meat, lettuce, tomato and plenty of sauce. Hot sauce was available on the side though I like mild. It was filling and the perfect size. Not the best I've had but very good.

We were warmly welcomed by the owner at the beginning and shown to our seats. We had plenty of time to look through the menu and then ordered a Kofta Kebab plate and a Chicken Gyros plate. The food was prepared quickly, we didn’t have to wait long, and it was absolutely delicious.

Google
Absolutely loved this place! The food was incredibly delicious, bursting with authentic Mediterranean flavors that took me right back to my hometown of Istanbul. The restaurant is spotless and inviting, with a warm, friendly atmosphere that truly feels like a family-run gem. The staff were kind and attentive, making the experience even more memorable. Even the mayor of San Francisco, Daniel Laurie, is a fan of this spot. That says it all. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This place is pretty much a diamond in the rough. Whenever I tell my coworkers where I ordered from they almost always have the same reaction "you eat food from down there??" Well yes, yes I do and it is AMAZING!!! My go to in the Greek salad with lamb and beef gyro. It is consistently delicious, very filling and their homemade hot sauce is perfect. The resreaunt itself is always very clean, well lit and inviting. Staff is ALWAYS very friendly and make you feel like you're at home. I would give it 5 stars however when ordering for delivery, they do have a bad habit of either forgetting things or not giving you exactly what you asked for. For example, I ordered a Snapple 1/2 lemonade 1/2iced tea. Instead, I received some off brand drink that I had never heard of they was terrible tasting. I will however stand by this place and always go back!

Yelp
Portions are decent and the service is good, but the quality to me is just lacking. This place unfortunately falls into the same category as all other gyro places here = Very mid. I prefer my lamb/beef meat to be emulsified when it comes to gyros, sadly there is not a single place here in SF that provides that :(

Yelp
Surprisingly good place. You order at the counter and food is delivered to your table. It's fairly basic for ambiance but the food is good. We got the lamb and beef gyro wrap. Very very good. The wrap wasn't messy like some are - all the stuff stayed in the wrap, didn't fall out. Notably, the lavash was warmed and more crispy. We love the wraps like these - not doughy like some are. Great place for a pre-show meal!

Yelp
[EDIT: one day after & based on my partner's input: I'd give this place 2.5 if I could & I will return to Gyro King to give them another chance, in case they were just having a bad day]. I'm not a hater, as I try to find the positive in most things (especially food). And a confession: Gyro King used to be my favorite place for Mediterranean food in the City. I don't know when the ownership changed, but I probably haven't been there in over a year. Today my companion and I got take-out and once we got home, it broke my heart. For the simple reason that the price spiked upward and the portion size & food quality spiked downward. Today, we got the Appetizer Combo Plate with Pita Bread, as well as a Lamb & Beef Gyro Wrap. For the Combo, the hummus, baba ganoush & ezme were still tasty & great. The dolma wasn't bad either. The tzatziki and potato salad were just OK. The so-called "Homemade" Pita Bread was awful, having a cake-like spongy softness (in texture, kinda like Wonder bread), where before it was more firm and was my favorite part of the Combo. The single falafel ball was cold, tasteless and hard as a rock. Probably had been sitting around all day. The Lamb/Beef Wrap was OK, but not worth the new higher price. My eating companion thought the lavash bread was dry, tasted old, making it too chewy. That all said, we won't be back unless the food is fresh and warm again. Sure, inflation is making food everywhere more expensive, but it's not worth paying higher prices for mediocre Mediterranean cuisine. All this saddens me because I used to go to Gyro King nearly every time I visited the SF Library's main branch across the street.

Yelp
This place is a necessity for the patrons attending shows at the Orpheum theater. This is not a neighborhood you want to wander around looking for a place to eat. The food is good and the proprietor of this establishment is working hard to accommodate his customers. BB

Yelp
I stumbled across this place while at the Plaza Customer Service was really good Their Baklava was perfect. Not too sweet flakey and honey based I ordered the lamb plate the portion was huge and enough to eat twice

Yelp
I had the falafel plate and it was perfect!Excellent service and it was ready super fast I will be coming back!.

Yelp
this is a really great spot in this neighborhood; i don't know why there aren't better reviews. clean spacious seating area, friendly people working there, and fast service. i ordered the salmon plate and it was delicious, filling, and well-seasoned. i also had an side of the lamb/beef gyro for extra protein and it was perfectly juicy! my whole meal + a coke zero was under $25. this is almost impossible to find on a lunch break while avoiding fast/fried foods. i'll be back!

Yelp
While there are a plethora of tasty, cheap food options in the Civic Center, Gyro King is not to be missed if you're in the mood for a kebab or gyro. My friend got the chicken kebab plate while I got the combo gyro wrap, which had lamb, beef, and chicken gyro. My friend gave me some of his chicken kebab to try and wow! It was super tender and juicy, cooked perfectly, and had tons of flavor from the dried spice blend. I also loved my combo gyro wrap and loaded it with their hot sauce, which took it over the top and added a beautiful kick that paired nicely with the tzatziki. While I really loved my gyro, after tasting the chicken kebab I would either get the chicken kebab gyro or chicken kebab plate next time. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Yelp
Delicious food, great service, and the best baklava I've ever had!! Will definitely come back in the future :)

Yelp
Wow the food here is really delicious! This looks like the type of place that could be a hidden gem in the city from the outside and it did not disappoint. Fresh ingredients and great service make this a great spot for locals as their dependable lunch spot or a great spot to grab Mediterranean in the city! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Come to Gyro King- this restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and delicious Turkish food made with the highest quality through generous portions. The staff here is very welcoming and friendly.
google avatar

Milind L.

Yelp
Don't have a great photo but the chicken gyro was pretty good until I ate some chicken that felt undercooked. Not great to eat chicken that's off. It gave me food poisoning for a few days. I haven't had issues in the past so this might just be unfortunate luck. I'll definitely try again and hopefully update with my thoughts. The bread has a nice texture and somewhat crispy. The vegetables were good too. Quick service for a to go order.

Steffanie B.

Yelp
The food is amazing, taste delicious, big portions and I believe it is family owned business. The service is amazing, a quiet place to stay. It's not cheap but it's worth it every penny. I ordered Lamb and beef gyro plate. The food is fresh and the restaurant is so clean. A hidden gem in SF. I will be back soon .

Yelp
First thing first, we loved the fresh pastries here! It was so yummy with all the appetizers and creamy dips. We were in Greek appetizer heaven! The Ezme and the hummus were so addicting! The Gyros combos were very tasty! My friend recommends the Lamb and Beef Gyro- we'll try that next time. Of course, we didn't forget the dessert, the baklava will always be my favorite, though the Kadayif was so much fun to eat. Super friendly service with good recommendations. Super Cute Greek vibe and it's near SF city hall.

Yelp
Very vegan friendly and the food is great. Very nice spot close to civic center. Will be back for sure

Yelp
Stopped by at Gyro King for a quick lunch after a morning of working at the San Francisco Public Library. This location is literally right across the street from the library so it's very convenient. Pleasantly surprised to see that it was pretty busy inside, a good sign for a Tuesday at 1:30pm! It does have a bit of a deli/diner feel and is dark inside, but I didn't go for the vibes. I ordered a combo gyro plate online ahead of time (10% discount for online orders) and went in the restaurant to eat. The container was packed full with rice, lentils, salad, and chicken + lamb/beef. It also came with a small container of spicy sauce and tzatziki. I really enjoyed the flavor of the salad, which was nice and tart with red cabbage. Rice and lentils were also good. Meat was a bit dry and didn't taste as fresh or flavorful as other places I've had, but it was not terrible. I really enjoyed the homemade pita bread. Overall for ~$20 I had a huge meal that could have easily been two meals if I wasn't so hungry. Super friendly and quick service as well.

Yelp
Dry chalky shawarma and way too much old lavash to filling ratio Not enough sauce too. Balance all wrong San Francisco has zero good shawarma
google avatar

Sam Y.

Yelp
Ordered a gyro wrap during lunch. The service was quick and courteous but my wrap was lukewarm. My belly is full so that's good. $15 for a gyro wrap! I wish whole foods was still open cus their pizza was pretty good

Yelp
I'm so so sad that I will no longer return to Gyro King. In early March 2025 I went for a lamb and gyro wrap. Customer service was at par. While I was waiting for my wrap, near the bar stools, I saw a cockroach on the floor and killed it. It seemed to have come from under the kitchen area. And a few weeks before that my SIL saw the male owner (older gentleman) touch food and then money without washing his hands. So, goodbye Gyro King. It was fun while it lasted.

Yelp
Close location to Orpheum for a quick bite to eat before the show. Cafeteria style Mediterranean food. Lots of options: gyro, shish, kofte... you can get wraps or plates, salads. Turkish pizzas, borek... Decent selection of desserts. Fairly affordable. Friendly mom and pop owners. I ordered the kofte plate and my daughter ordered the chicken gyro. They cook it while you wait so it's fresh. Nice flavor. I love the side salad. I would definitely come back.

Robert C.

Yelp
The service was great. The food is prepared fresh. The moussaka was really good. The lamb kabobs were tender. Very generous portiond.
google avatar

Stacy T.

Yelp
I stopped in today. Wanted a side of Gyro meat to add to a salad I had. The meat was cooked well. While I was there decided to order a piece of spinach pie a.k.a. spanakopita. On the menu posted behind the register, they had it listed with phyllo dough. I was very disappointed when I got out to see that it was encased in a very thick bread, which was not what I had envisioned or what it said on the menu. In addition, there was hardly any spinach in it. Not what I had wanted.
google avatar

Ronny C.

Yelp
Amazing food. Perfect before the show. Nit many restaurants around and this place rocks.

Meryle M.

Yelp
I used to come to this location once a week. Once they sold it to the new owners a few years ago, they stopped stocking certain menu items, combined others, and dramatically lowered the quality of ingredients - particularly the meats and veggies that used to be so fresh. I have tried it 3 times since the new owner, and it was worse and worse so I just don't ever go there any more. Sad to see a good restaurant ruined, it was a great cheap eat place in the neighborhood.

Yelp
If I could put more stars I would THIS PLACE IS GREAT!!! THE FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! I ordered for my office luncheon for 30 people and with such a big party hard to make e dry one happy NOT WITH GYRO KING!!! The kababs the salad can't say it enough it was absolutely wonderful
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
This is a long time favorite for kabobs, gyros, and all things Mediterranean. They always have a delicious daily special entree. The servings are generous and fresh. It's absolutely worth a visit,

Yelp
One of the reasons I'm happy to be back in SF is the food! I haven't had Gyro King in maybe 2 years and it was just as good as I remember it being back then. As many mentioned it's a great spot to pop in on your way to a show or museum. Very central and easily accessible. There are a variety of options from sweets to savory grab and go foods.
google avatar

Ayham D.

Yelp
I'll always remember how cozy it was here at Gyro King. After a long day around the tenderloin I ended up here for dinner. It was kind of my last resort because I wanted the chicken gyro wrap but they only had lamb and beef. I didn't really enjoy this wrap to be honest. The bread was really dry and it was full of mayo. I also wish they'd use a pita instead of the lavash they used, like a traditional pita wrap. The chili sauce they have also didn't taste good to me. Now the fries they had were a bit lacking flavor even despite the seasoning they threw on top. Above all I think it was still very telling that they were very nice here and accommodated my whole group.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
Their combo plate was huge. Very nice staff. We enjoyed ourselves before the theater.
google avatar

Annie W.

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up lunch and was greeted by the nice friendly folks there. Their menu was pretty extensive and I decided on the lamb shish kebab wrap. Waited about 10 minutes for it to be prepared. They gave me extra tzaziki sauce and some hot sauce to go with it, which kicked it up a notch. The wrap was about 10", so it was pretty generous, but it was mainly filled with veggies... cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce... which was okay, but more lamb would've been appreciated! The bites that included lamb were so delicious; the bites that didn't include lamb were good, but not nearly as good! The tzaziki was very flavorful with fresh dill and, as I said, added much to the wrap. The wrap was about $14, so not too bad. It was good enough to have again!
google avatar

Anne P.

Yelp
This place is truly a gem! I mostly get salads topped with gyro meat, and the servings are very generous. Both the chicken and beef/lamb are so tasty, it's often difficult to decide which to get! Of course there are many other equally delicious options here, and where else can you get a nice lunch for under $10? For example, the pastry filled with spinach and, I believe, feta was so incredibly decadent, plus it comes with a small salad, just $8 and change. Similarly, they have chicken and beef pies, with salad, for about the same price. The owners here are very friendly and welcoming, and the service is pretty quick. It can get busy at lunch, so get there a little early.

Yelp
This is a small restaurant across from the Library on Grove, and is a good location for people going to music events in Civic Center. I have enjoyed eating here for years, and give it five stars for food and hospitality. The physical plant is humble. The owner suggested I get fresh-fried falafels, that were the best I have had, in a tie with the place on 16th St. I also had the special, which was meatballs in a delicious broth with peppers and onions, served with rice and salad. Uptown people may find this place too humble. Those folks miss out on a lot of great "ethnic", authentic food, which should be a strong reason to live in a city.

Constanza D.

Yelp
This place has amazing food, superlative service and great prices as well. Gyro King is a fantastic restaurant in the heart of civic center. It's an amazing spacious restaurant, family operated and family friendly. The menu has all kinds of options for everyone. It's not loud, the place is spotless and you can ask the staff anything and they will always be kind, helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Gyro King, it's a must try if you're in the area.
google avatar

Yuliya Y.

Yelp
Not bad food, I got the beef kebab gyro. I had better before and the meat was kinda skimpy but the flavor was there. They were pretty quick work getting it out and it was quite packed. When I was waiting, people just kept walking in and ordering. Maybe there's a better option than the one I've gotten so I will try it again!

Jithu J.

Yelp
A wonderful experience . Amazing tasteand good presentation, I like the Little blue door
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
We had lamb gyro plate and kebab wrap with my spouse for lunch, the owner of the place was super nice, the food was super delicious, we will for sure come back again!
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Wishing I'd returned my food and asked to have it remade. As soon as I sat down it was served. The falafel was extremely dry, as if cooked hours earlier. The wrap too was dry and stale tasting. Sadly not enough sauce to make eating it palatable. My bad for not speaking up. Expect they do better and this was just one-off, I hope.
google avatar

Kristen P.

Yelp
If you are headed to the Orpheum for a show and you're up to try a little hole in the wall, go here! Food is fresh and hot and the service was fast and friendly and ita across from your show.

Yelp
We went there with big party and they were able to accommodate us. Amazing and delicious food and good service. Love it. Highly recommended.

Yelp
A work event gave us a reason to bring in Gyro King. Wow wow wow. This food was so unbelievably delicious. I ordered the chicken wrap and a Greek salad. The chicken was incredibly tender, moist, and flavorful. The tzatziki sauce was the ultimate complement to the chicken, and the freshness of the lettuce and tomato in the wrap and salad were unrivaled. I can't recommend this enough.

P G.

Yelp
We have been coming here for many years stopping by before we go to the symphony - it is a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is consistently good - and very vegetarian-friendly. The food is Turkish, which means that the pita bread is not what you get in other places - but tastes excellent. The vegetarian platter is our usual go-to - and we were there just recently - and enjoyed ourselves. Even got some dolma to go. The spanakopita is not what I expected - since it does not have phyllo dough. I enjoyed the one at Gyro King, but prefer the other version more. The service is fast and friendly - which is what one wants when going to a show next. All in all, we will continue to go back.

Yelp
I was in the Civic Center area tight on time and looking for a quick bite to eat before seeing Hamilton at the Orpheum Theater. Fortunately, I happened upon Gyro King, and indeed this restaurant turned out to be the perfect solution! They have a very solid selection of gyro plates and wraps, which also includes a good variety of vegetation selections. The service is relatively quick, since all the food is pre-cooked and they simply need to assemble your plate/wrap before you can dig in and enjoy! The seating inside is a little tight, but I had no problems finding a table and they also offer outside seating if it does get full. Before I get into the food, I will have to admit that the restaurant's location isn't in the most ideal place. There is a chance one could feel a little cautious eating in this area, but nevertheless it's a solid option for a fast meal in the Civic Area. You definitely can't go wrong with their food! I ordered the lab and beef gyro plate, which also came with a serving of bread. Luckily, I was particularly hungry on this day or else I don't think I would've been able to finish it all off. They definitely give generous portions, so I hope you're hungry when you visit Gyro King (or at least bring a friend with you to share)!

Yelp
I've been here several times, and it has always been good. I am a fan of their gyros and hummus, but last time we got a spinach pie which was also good. The gentleman behind the counter was very nice and explained to my friend what some of the foods were. My friend said it was one of the best gyros she ever had - I think the white sauce was the kicker. This place does not look like much, but if you want a quick bite before a show (it's very close to the Orpheum), the food is worth the visit. Not expensive, quick, and good.

Yelp
Just disappointed. Upon our arrival, my partner and I were pleased to find a bustling enclave of customers lining outside of the door. We don't mind a wait, especially since the best things in life take a bit of patience. Lively conversation filled the air. While people were waiting in line, an older gentleman was taking orders. Well, most of our orders. He took the orders of the group in front of me and later returned to take the orders of the people behind me. I did not place my order until I was at the cashier. From the time of my arrival to the time that I received my order, over 40 minutes had passed and I was standing the whole time. Over 5 people who were behind me in line received their orders first--and we had ordered the same items. By the time our food came out, it looked like it had been rushed and forgotten about. It was just so bizarre how unorganized the place was. There did not seem like any system to determine who had ordered what or when an order had been placed. Obviously, everyone around me received their orders in a timely manner, so your mileage may vary. But even the food quality was lackluster. I ordered #25 and my partner #22. Both were wraps. There was little to no flavor and the meat itself was the only vaguely redeeming quality. The last few bites of our wraps consisted of lettuce, the wrap, and a profusion of liquid-based sauce. We felt like we could have replicated this experience at home. We don't have plans to come back but will leave room for things to change, after we give our experience some extra time to digest.

Yelp
A GREAT place to grab a bite when you're trynna pass time for a show. BRAND EXPERIENCE It's your typical San Francisco city dive - small, packed, fast-paced and full of interesting looking people. CUSTOMER SERVICE As soon as we walked in we were created by what seems like a manager. He was friendly as he directed us to the register to place our orders with a lady who was much more direct, doing an excellent job explaining & taking our order. I've never been to Greece but I imagine most people interact like this. I love it. FOOD Got a beef & lamb gyro to go + a lamb kebab. Everything tasted great with both generous portions & seasoning. It's a bit more than I'm used to paying but that's simply the price of buying food in the Bay Area. Will 100% stop by again the next time I'm waiting for a show to start.

Arlene V.

Yelp
Wonderful place, wonderful atmosphere. The owner is such a nice caring person. They really treat you like family-- would recommend anybody to come and eat their delicious food!!!

Jeff R.

Yelp
I have always loved this place. Appetizer combo is a solid vegetarian option. Combo Gyro was fantastic as always. Their pide and house bread are amazing. My only regret is that I don't stop by more often. Thank you!
