13 Incredible Japanese Restaurants in Boston

"There’s no better way to celebrate a special event than with yakiniku (a style of Japanese barbecue), and Boston has no shortage of it. With four locations in Brookline, Cambridge, Dorchester, and Burlington, people no longer have to wait in line for a table at international chain Gyu-Kaku, which was the norm when it made its debut in Brookline a decade ago. Choose from one of the three all-you-can-eat menus if you’re feeling hungry, or order one of the combo menus that are designed for parties of two or more people. “Gyu” means cow in Japanese, and therefore the options here lean heavily on beef, with sirloin, ribeye, and A5 wagyu available." - Valerie Li Stack

Known for its shared Japanese barbecue format where customers cook their own meats on a central grill, Gyu-Kaku serves cuts of beef, chicken, and seafood, as well as salads, soups, noodles, rice dishes, and an assortment of appetizers. Additionally, there’s an all-you-can-eat menu chock full of grilled meats, cheese fondue, and dessert. Google
Quality service and food! We went for a birthday and got the Meat Lover's course. Everything was sooo yummy and well portioned. Great value for what you get. Amy was amazing, super attentive and made sure our grill never got too dirty. This was so fun, will be coming back and requesting Amy!

Google
This place was fantastic our server Daymien was amazing. Daymien explained the menu and had amazing recommendations . The garlic fried rice was the best fried rice I ever had the cheesey corn was probably the best thing I have ever eaten. 10/10 will be going again. Even my 13 year old loved it and he's the pickiest person I know. So 10/10 would recommend.

Google
I had such a great time here the other week! Food was fresh and scrumptious. Our server Tri was such a delight, he helped us with any questions we had and showed that he cared about us having a great time! Tri made sure we had everything we needed during our meal. I cannot praise him enough!! If you decide to come, I strongly suggest Tri as your server!

Update: been here a few times for lunch now. So good! Dayana was the best and always so friendly! Been here numerous times. All the staff have been friendly and all the servers have been great. Great food too!

Google
The food was quite good — fresh and flavorful. However, the service was very slow. We wanted to order more food but ended up waiting far too long, It felt like the staff might be short-handed. I really hope they can improve their service efficiency, as it affected the overall dining experience.

Google
Where you pay to cook your own food and somehow end up with a perfect disaster. The toro melted in my mouth, the garlic noodles were so good I considered taking a bath in them, and the Tuna Volcano almost caused an explosion (of flavor). The galbi? Let’s just say I nearly fought someone for the last bite. 10/10—would risk setting off the smoke alarm again for this feast.

I had went to Gyu Kaku and my server Andy was amazing he was kind helpful and informative the best server I had ever whenever I come back I hope he servers me again

The garlic fried rice came in with salad in the same bowl.. the salad dressing completely ruined the taste of the rice. I’ve been to at least 5 Guy-Kaku across the country and nobody else does this. Not ok… the service at this location is also less impressive than average. A bit disappointed with this experience. BBQ is good as usual though.

Yelp
I typically visit this location Gyu-kaku or the Gyu-Kaku on Beacon St. in Brookline. Gyu-kaku is an amazing place to go to for BBQ! I always come here whenever I am craving kBBQ but Boston does not have many kbbq places that really hit the spot... Gyu-kaku does substitute well for kbbq craving though. They have a la carte options and 3 different options for AYCE (all you can eat). I typically go for the ultimate AYCE option, which came to $64/person. On the menu, it states that there is a time limit for how long you have for eating but they are pretty lenient with that. I wish that they still oiled the grills but they do not anymore. I found that the meat would burn the grill if left a little too long after the second time placing meats to grill after a grill change b/c we like our meat a little more charred so we did have to keep replacing the grill. The crunchy garlic sauce is also a must!

Yelp
The food was delicious, our waitress was very helpful and described how to order and eat for a group. Food is fun to bbq and the smore was a cherry on top. :)

Yelp
$65 for two ($32.50/per person pricing on the weekdays) had us full!!! The "Happy Hour" menu included: miso soup, white rice, edamame, salad, bistro hanger steak, Yaki-Shabu beef, toro beef, angus beef rib, umakara pork, chicken breast, and assorted vegetables (buttered corn, zucchini, and white mushrooms) My personal favorites were the hanger steak and the angus beef rib but everything was seasoned perfectly to pair well with the ponzu and spicy dipping sauces available at the table The staff kindly replaced our grill regularly and were always ready to answer any questions! Pro-Tip: Make sure to reserve your table so you don't have to wait!

Yelp
Amazing dining experience! Sarah and Ethan were an unbelievable team. Cannot wait to come back another time.

Yelp
Really fulfilling all you can eat bbq. Some of the meat is really delicious and some others are so so. I like the beef tongue especially. If you love quantity over quality, this is a definitely a place to be! Also really great for friends gathering. Reservation is definitely needed for Friday and weekend nights.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, and atmosphere. Highly recommend coming with friends for lunch combo and ordering a variety of meats. The garlic fried rice is also super popular and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
The food, the service and the ambiance were excellent! We all did the premier AYCE choice and it did not disappoint. There is a 90 minute rule which is not heavily enforced and the side were all nicely done. The rice was okay, but a welcome break from the saltiness.

Yelp
Food was absolutely amazing Service was perfection thanks to Thang and ambience was great. Awesome music selection

Yelp
Not stoked about the price increase every time I come but wanted to shoutout Josh, he was a great server and did an excellent job on an unexpectedly busy Tuesday evening.

Yelp
Nah this isn't the spot, food has no taste like it used to drinks are watered down and no variety just basic, people that with there are great tho is just management don't pay attention to changing environments, hard no for me they only have 2 stars for service which was great food was mediocre
google avatar

Madow N.

Yelp
I've had a couple of decent experiences here before but the last one was not good. Our waiter's shift ended after we put our order in and we were handed off to another waiter. They dropped the ball on everything after that. We didn't do the BBQ; we just ordered some small plates and bowls. One of the entrees came out before the appetizers. The other entrees and appetizers took forever to come out. We had to remind them we were waiting for them. They ran out of avocados, so the avocado salad I ordered came with no avocado and I was still charged full price smh. The karaage chicken was stale and dry this time - not like I remember it. They even forgot to give us utensils & napkins. Didn't offer drink refills either. Just a disappointing experience overall.

Yelp
Shoutout to our server Josh during our 4th of July dinner! For the meat variety pack, good eats here

Yelp
Our waiter was great The food is awesome Brookline is the location I always go to but I tried Boston and I'll be back Hope this company stays true to food quality I noticed a lot of locations opening

Yelp
I have been this restaurant many times, service is not bad . But this time that service makes me sick. I order the a combo. He have charge this items., but he also extra charge me every single items from combos.which means I need to pay double on This bill. This is deliberate overcharging. Guys went to this restaurant who must be reviewing your bill carefully. I knew that service wants me to pay more tips. Look 66 dollars overcharging

Sheila J.

Yelp
tri was amazing! great service. Would definitely visit again! Right in the heart of Boston!

Ledia G.

Yelp
The small plates were just ok. The ambiance is tacky and loud. The service was ok. The waitress was nice but too intrusive

Yelp
Food is always fresh and tastes great! Service is beyond amazing! Dayana is the best waitress I've ever had in my life very attentive always there for us remembers what we like no one can compare. Ambiance is good music is a little loud but overall it's a perfect evening.

Xingxing L.

Yelp
food, services and ambiance are nice! The waiter Fernando was very friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Shirley W.

Yelp
We had Dayana as our server and we had an amazing time! Parking at the location was easy, garage is right next to the restaurant. It wasnt too busy here today, the day before thanksgiving. The staff here was very attentive, they changed our grill multiple times without us asking, Dayana checked in to make sure we had everything and really took care of us. We didn't feel rushed through our meal and amongst all three locations, I would prefer this location

Naomi M.

Yelp
the food was really great and the service is amazing too. the group experience is really nice and the marinated meat is so tasty. Emerson was a really nice server!

Tarese T.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. Our server Thang made today one of our best experiences at Gyu Kaku. Not only was he polite and knowledgeable but he also made sure we were comfortable and taken care of. The combination of great food, great service and great music made my impromptu Date night perfect.

Krista H.

Yelp
Went here for dinner with my friend and the meat lovers combo & lychee mojito were bomb. Eric was the best server, super attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Indira H.

Yelp
Love coming to this place! The drinks are always good! Service is a little slow sometimes but waiters are always nice! We can for dine out Boston this time around, everything was delicious but some of the meats were a bit chewy. Will continue to come here in the future!

Alicia F.

Yelp
Today, my boyfriend and I decided to have a nice lunch at Gyu-Kaku. We were greeted at the door and then seated at our table. Thang took care of us and made us feel really welcomed. He explained their new limited time menu that offers you more dishes of Japan. We decided to do the premium all you can eat. Thang took our order and was very attentive throughout our time here. Any time we needed a change for the grill, it was done right away so we could continue cooking and enjoying our time. I don't think I've ever had a server pay this much attention! He's really awesome and deserves 5 stars for his service! The food was also 5 stars, didn't have anything that I did not like. I recommend coming here with another person, as more than 2-3 might take too long to cook food and be able to eat. Make sure to make a reservation because this place can get pretty busy.
google avatar

Haja F.

Yelp
Japanese BBQ is an experience so come with your appetite. I went in with two friends and we did their holiday premium for 3, we also ordered 3 other appetizers and that was plenty of food. We didn't get to finish all the meats (don't eat with your eyes lol). Everything we had was pretty delicious. I wasn't that sold on the drink I got but I think my friends liked theirs. Our waiter was nice, but seemed like they he was busy. We went in on a Sunday night and it wasn't busy so the vibe was calm. Also orders takeout from there the night after, small portions but delicious. I Would recommend giving this place a try.

Holden C.

Yelp
Manager Jackie is the greatest of all time and super helpful The waiter Erick we got also is extremely helpful and friendly. The entire waiter team is quick and efficient. Definitely going to come back here!
google avatar

Askia A.

Yelp
Portions are bit small, so you have to order a good amount, unless your on a diet. Otherwise love the setting, especially being able to cook your own food.

Reina F.

Yelp
This was a great experience the food was bomb.. so good !! thank you to Jose our bussrr and big thank you to our server Tri. you guys are great !

Sandra L.

Yelp
The meat was great, like usual. The salad is terrible, rotten, disgusting. The server didn't apologize for it, took it away after I mentioned it. The restaurant was quiet, not busy on weekday mornings, so the service is quick.

Yelp
I must say, out of all the locations I think this is my favorite one. Maybe it's because I live 5 minutes away LOL but all jokes aside, great service and great atmosphere! Their staff is super friendly and very energetic . Makes dining in 10x better! Me and the wife went yesterday for lunch and the manager Wendy was able to accommodate us right away. We had a really good server but unfortunately I forgot his name. Sorry! Glasses with a comb over. Thanks man! We always settle for the ultimate choice for the AYCE. For ultimate it's $55. Hamari skirt steak, bistro hanger steak, beef tongue is many of my favorite cuts. I steer away from the chicken because it's dry but other than that, everything is well marinated and quality cut is superb. Overall, $55 does sound a little hefty but you get your money's worth! I'm not kidding when I say the service is great and the quality of cuts is good. Must try! Huge TIP! Download their rewards app. It's so worth it. I was able to get 25% off of my bill because I accumulated points over time. It's definitely worth it .

Dark M.

Yelp
A big fan of the place. Food is always amazing! Ambience is great. Excellent service by Josue today!
google avatar

Kai W.

Yelp
I have dined in this spot couple times. The location is great especially for folks live in Boston downtown or South Boston. The mall parking lot is free. The service is also great! They also have a good selection of meat choices and all you can eat option.

Ricardo G.

Yelp
We took out mom to Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ for Mother's Day and had a great time. The food and saki was great, there was dope tunes on the station, and our server Tri was amazing and provided excellent customer service every step of the way. We can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with going to Gyu Kaku for a night out as the food is always fresh and delicious. As for the cookery, you can't even complain since you literally cook everything yourselves. The only reason this particular chain gets a star deducted is due to the slow service. It took about 25 minutes to get a table cleaned / seated and even longer to actually get some of the items we ordered. Still believe the food is worth the wait though. Personal favorites include the spinach (a hidden gem), pretty much any sweet marinated beef option, and the karaage. Also, make sure you make a reservation in advance because this location is super busy.

Yelp
I love this place. I eat here far too frequently, but enjoy the variety of meats and the great service! I'm here once a week at least and it's my favorite place.
google avatar

Phu P.

Yelp
I went here to eat for Mother's Day and the food was awesome. We started with appetizers for the kids and we ordered the fried calamari and the chicken wings for them. They really liked it and we ordered a second order of the onion rings. Next, we ordered the fried rice with beef and they also had caprisun drinks. The server literally came by every 10 mins to check up on us. I think the managers Tony and Tan were working and they were very nice. They gave us recommendations for the meat and the wagyu was one of my favorites. The meat was good quality and you can tell by the marbeled and delicate texture. I will probably be back for Father's Day, with or without the family. Haha jk

Erika c.

Yelp
Sara was the best! She was very attentive to our table and made sure we were all set with our orders.

Albert Z.

Yelp
The food was delicious. Our server Tri was truly amazing and had great food recommendations!!

Mark T.

Yelp
Absolutely, unbelievably, freakin' divine! The choices, the service, the execution, were all flawless! Everything we ate was incredibly tasty, fresh, and with an added bit of excitement. I was looking at the menu beforehand, and I thought it would just be different cuts of meat. Turns out all of the options are either seasoned or marinated beforehand, or at the very least have a sauce served on the side specially for it.  this way, you don't only get a different experience from having a different animal or cut, but also different flavors from the marinade/sauce/seasoning. In addition to meat, there are also some delicious seafood and vegetable options which are unique in their own way! If you go for the supreme menu, be sure to get the Kalbi Short Rib and Duck Breast! For a salad make sure to get the Spicy Addicting Cucumber. The service was also impeccable. Our server, Alyssa was wonderful and went above in beyond in taking great care of us! Everything we ordered came out fast, and she was very knowledgeable in the menu and how long everything should spend on the grill. I won't leave without mentioning the Tayaki. Be sure to leave some room for this! It is a delicious, red-bean stuffed deep fried cake served on a bed of graham crackers with ice cream. It had a perfect level of sweetness, and wasn't greasy!

Nick P.

Yelp
Iris was a great server. Food came out smoothly, not too many dishes at once. She made sure our fire wasn't getting out of control . overall a great time
google avatar

Lindsay S.

Yelp
As a chain restaurant, Gyu-kaku seems pretty solid at any of the locations. They have a good selection of sets for groups, ayce, a la carte entrees, and add-ons that can round out any meal. My friend and I ordered the meat lover's set and found it to be too much food! Most of the meats were good, although some of them marinated beef selections were super salty. The upgrade to sukiyaki rice for $3 per person was almost not worth it considering there's hardly any meat in the rice. However, we both enjoyed our meal overall and will definitely come back. The reason I'm taking off a star was for the service. It was incredibly slow, and the waitress took over 20 minutes to bring out a drink refill and the smores for dessert. We spent entirely too long just waiting to be served, which undoubtedly resulted in not being able to turnover tables faster. I don't mind a leisurely dinner, but I see no reason to spend an hour extra waiting for them to notice we needed our last course, requesting they bring the last course, and waiting for the check. I would also encourage this location to spend more time educating their employees about pleasant service to improve the in-house experience.

Ivy N.

Yelp
I had a great time tonight, the service was amazing as well as the food. Dishes were all brought out very quickly! Our server Iris was absolutely amazing, thank you!

Yelp
I have been to 3 Gyu-Kaku in boston. While I have experienced terrible customer experience from each of the Gyu-Kaku location, this one is by far the worst in comparison. If I were to rank the location and decoration, this dorchester location is the newest and is quite spacious compare to the Cambridge and Brookline locations. Nevertheless, the freshness of this location is demonstrated through not only the decoration, but its customer service as well. I know Gyu-Kaku is known for hiring students and temporary trainee especially during the week days. But the quality of those trainee has been getting worse each time I came to visit. I would be fine if the waiter or waitress is a bit slow in being my order or even forgot my order (which have happened countless times), but the store almost ironically showcase its lack of customer service by placing the most incapable person at the front desk all the time. It's not rocket science that the front desk represent the face of the company, it's the first impression customer has on your brand, and is undoubtedly one of the most impactful part of the whole dining experience. It pains me to see how long some trainees take to simply confirm an appointment. And how chaotic the line gets when there is not enough tables. Missing order is commonplace, I have learned to order the same thing from multiple waitress to avoid this pitfall. Thankfully, a few waitress out of each location is basically carrying the entire operation and is quite efficient in performing their tasks. I understand Gyu-Kaku is just a cheap place to have bbq, but they could really invest a bit more in their training, or have better policy in training completion. It pains me to see such popular business model getting ruined because of few incapable trainees. I hope they could really improve their customer service, because i really do love their meat. It's understandable they try to cut cost in training or wage during this crazy inflation time especially when CPI of meat is off the roof. The fact that they maintain a relatively affordable price keeps me coming back. P.S. They no longer change the grill due to Covid, so everytime I came I'm prepared to have cancer or burn off my fingers.

Shar N.

Yelp
All the food we had was really good (spicy cabbage, calamari, spicy cucumbers, black pepper wings, chili dumplings, and shio skirt steak/sweet soy tare short rib for the grill). And our server Iris was very helpful with going over the menu and making sure we had everything we needed.

Darrell L.

Yelp
The server, Patcha, was wonderful. Tge food is delicious and it's a place where you should bring groups to grill up a meal.

Vo N.

Yelp
When I tell you management here is terrible.. I mean it is TERRIBLE. Wendy the manager is extremely rude to not only us but every server. We had the (dis)pleasure to sit near the back where she was harassing and yelling at staff, just killing the vibe and mood of the entire night. Please treat your customers and servers with respect. I will no longer be supporting this location and please do not give them your money. All in all the food is amazing, our server was great, but I cannot in good faith go here knowing that people get treated like that here.

Alanna M.

Yelp
sara was amazing !! she provided the best service. We had lots of food and the ambiance was amazing as well.

Michael S.

Yelp
Small location and disorganized stuff makes a disaster environment for dinner enjoyment. We had a large party and they were dumping food like on random tables without any communication.
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
Went in for 2 hour buffet option. Meat came out so slow and after about 1 and half hour, the female asian owner/manager came to our table to kick us out for staying too long. I kept track of how long I had for the buffet experience and we had about 30 minutes left, but this person insisted that we went over our time. She approached us in a hostile manner. I've had similar experience in brookline, but it was the first time someone tried to kick us out. P.S. servers were amazing, kind, and polite. I feel sorry that they have to work under this asshole. If you don't want to deal with her, I suggest going to the brookline branch.
