Why Does Texas Love the Grocery Store H-E-B So Much? | Eater

"Sited along the San Antonio River Walk on the former San Antonio Arsenal, this limestone, neoclassical corporate campus evokes Texas architecture and identity while serving as a symbolic and logistical hub that helps the company source and distribute local Texas-branded products." - Priya Krishna

I’m extremely upset and disgusted with a recent purchase from one of your Houston locations. I bought a box of H-E-B Boil-in-Bag White Rice, and when I opened one of the bags, I found a live maggot inside. Yes — a maggot in a sealed rice pouch. This is not only revolting but a major food safety concern. I’ve attached video and photo evidence to back up my claim. It’s completely unacceptable that a product sold under your name and sealed for consumer safety could contain something so unsanitary and dangerous. I’ve been a loyal H-E-B customer for years, but this experience has seriously shaken my trust in your quality control. This needs to be addressed immediately — not just for me, but for every other customer who could unknowingly take home something unsafe. I expect a full investigation, a refund, and to hear from someone in corporate as soon as possible.

The security at the HEB STORE # DESAVALA RD AND I-10HWY I SPOKE WITH CHRISTIAN "Customer Service" very polite young man and also the outside lawn and garden attendant I walked around the store with my bag of recently purchased HEB product looking for a shady place to sit and enjoy my lunch! I asked the attendant in front where I might sit and I already knew they would probably be like where the employees also set or partners also sit as I have many times before sat down with them because I also smoke and I wanted to enjoy my lunch in the shade and a safe environment since I was on foot I also drive for a major ride share organization and I pick up at the store all the time and also at corporate all the time downtown and I've come to know the HEB flavor is a very very appealing flavor until you run into well other partners that aren't so palatable! I purposely went out of my way to ask because I wanted to be in the area of appropriate and they could have told me at that time yes or no but they directed me back to her the partner said and I was enjoying my lunch I was also renting a car and doing you know lunch things that we do and I was going to get this feel like I was being stared at and the outdoor security person on the little trike was just staring at parked almost literally 10 ft away from me pointing directly at me in a confrontational way I might add and was just staring at me and as I looked up he pointed up in the air and I'm like I'm looking up like what he goes the sign can you can't you read the sign and I and it's his partner's only be on this point which would imply on the other side of that wall and so I said well sir I said I already asked and I said and I was directed here because I'm sorry I'm sorry that you couldn't hear me I said it louder I already asked and I was redirected here he knows who was that who was that I said was it was a gentleman out for unattending the plants tall with sunglasses"MATHIAS" on and he just totally took off on foot like you know like the wicked witch of the West I'm just really the impression I got and so I called customer service well he was on his walkabout and spoke to a very nice young man customer service named Christian I will definitely five star him for sure very polite very you know addressed to my concern that never heard the word no come out of his mouth what I can do and what we will do and what we have done was coming out of his mouth that is proper customer service first 15 seconds you had to impress about your company is the face that is customer service. I was quality assurance director training and quality assurance or a major 600 seat telecom call center and also the director of compliance so I do things appropriately by the rules and I have no problem with the word no but when I am directed by one of our employees to sit here and I'm passively having a lot in my lunch and doing nothing but having my lunch and I'm treated like I'm some kind of a criminal because he was adversarial confrontational the security guard and just you know the yelling at me and he kept like acting like he couldn't hear me so I'd have to raise my voice and I'm like you know come on passive aggressive really? I'm also going to find out the name of the young man out front too very very very polite very accommodating very easy even keeled energy came from him It was a good vibration and I want to make sure I give him the proper accolades that he deserves as well these are young men or customer service after covid was pretty much non-existent and they have been taught very well and they and it's natural to them if something that just is in who they are not only is a partner of HEB but also I suspect probably in life personally! SADLY, I Have had this issue before with another security guard downtown right next to corporate actually at the HEB on Cesar Chavez and he basically came up and knocked on my window while I was on a phone call while I was eating my lunch while the HEB bags were strewn all over my car and I put one in the windshield purposely to address their c

I live in the Houston area and have used HEB as my primary grocery store for 25 years. I went to HEB to buy groceries and enter the grocery giveaway contest. I was denied entry to the contest because they couldn't scan the barcode on my phone. The same thing happened to the customer in front of me. He was denied the ability to enter the contest even though he had the barcode. The manager told him he could buy another item and try again to enter. It seemed fishy - buy more and maybe we'll enter you. When I went through, I spent $200 on groceries and they couldn't scan the contest code. I tried to enter my phone number manually on the keypad but because my phone was in my hand and the keypad takes Google and Apple pay, it cashed out. Once you've paid your bill, you can't enter the contest. In addition, they hadn't entered the paper store coupons that I'd given them and I lost out on those until they were nice enough to go back and give me cash for the coupons. It seems like the payment pad shouldn't work until the cashier hits a button for a total after they've entered your coupons and scanned all your items. HEB is not running a contest, they're running a scam. Spending $200 should at least get your name in the drawing once. I hope they fix their system.

H-E-B isn’t just a grocery store - it’s a Texas institution. Every time disaster strikes, they’re one of the first to step up, providing real help when people need it most. Whether it’s hurricanes, power outages, or floods, H-E-B shows up for Texans in ways that go far beyond groceries. On top of that, their stores are clean, well-stocked, and thoughtfully laid out. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful, and the selection - from fresh produce to local favorites - is hard to beat. Their commitment to quality, community, and service truly sets them apart. In a world where big corporations often fall short, H-E-B stands tall. Proud to support a company that actually walks the walk.

I get my ground beef at HEB all the time. Today I decided to weigh it. It says net weight is 16oz but with the meat still in the package it was 15.32 another 15.28 and the last 15.28 oz. I’m not sure about everyone else but with the price of beef you shouldn’t be shorting your customers. One of those was thawed the others frozen. I hope you will correct this at your stores.

Extremely Disappointed and Concerned About Safety at the HEB on 2244 & 71 West - Austin Location I’ve had two upsetting experiences this week at the H-E-B on 2244 & 71 West. Both times, after checking out and leaving the store, my grocery cart suddenly locked, causing a jarring and unexpected stop that nearly made me fall. Today’s incident actually aggravated my back, and I’m now in pain. To make matters worse, an employee immediately walked up and casually said, “I locked your cart,” and then unlocked it—without any explanation or apology. This isn’t just poor customer service; it’s a serious safety hazard. There were no signs or warnings that this could happen, and no justification was given. I’m truly disgusted that this kind of treatment is happening—especially since it appears that certain customers may be targeted, which raises serious concerns about discrimination and intentional harm. This is not the H-E-B I’ve trusted for years. I hope H-E-B takes this seriously before someone is more seriously injured. Locking carts without warning, after payment, is not only unnecessary—it’s dangerous.

First, I'd like to thank DAV Felipe Tamez, for his service and comments regarding disabled parking. I'd like to add my own experience: On March 30th, the store at 7951 Guilbeau Rd, had it's monthly "sidewalk sale" (shrimp boil), which they set up in the designated handicap parking space that is closest to their front door. That is to say, they set up a tent, in the disabled parking space closest to the ramp, rail, and door, preventing a qualified patron from using the parking space. Though there are other options for their sale, they blocked the best parking space for patrons with wheelchairs or respirators. The store manager erroneously advised that they have "sole and total control over their parking lot and parking spaces". Further, that it is the "most convenient space" for them to use for their shrimp boil. My concern is for the safety of disabled patrons, not HEB's convenience. The designated parking spaces are marked with a sign that states, "Violators may be ticketed". Disabled patrons are required to have either a current hang tag or license plate, to park in designated spaces. HEB should be held to the same standard, at best, and at least should value and respect the safety of all patrons.

Most of the time HEB is my go to store other than Walmart but, July 24,2025 I stopped at the location on college in Beaumont Texas. I bought a family pack of hamburger meat, and I usually separate it (since it's just my husband and I) and put it in the freezer. The very next morning I took a pkg out to thaw out, and to my surprise once it was thawed out, it turned dark, almost grayish. Well,I used to be a meat wrapper back in the day, and what I know is that it means they grinded up old meat.
