"A long-established, San Antonio–headquartered grocery and retail chain with roughly 400 stores across Texas and Mexico, it recently acquired an Austin-based on-demand delivery startup and will convert that startup’s employees into company employees while the delivery runners will remain independent contractors. The chain already offers curbside pickup in some markets through a partnership with the delivery service, and the acquisition will allow the retailer to use the startup’s technology and give the startup access to the retailer’s inventory and data. The company has also been preparing for COVID-19 by encouraging customers to buy what they need without stockpiling and making operational changes to help customers get food and supplies." - Nadia Chaudhury
