"Located in an unassuming storefront on Western Ave., HK Market isn’t much of a looker (we’ll leave that to H Mart Koreatown Plaza), but if we’ve learned anything from our time in therapy, it’s to never judge a book by its cover. Or whatever. Because in addition to the long rows of fresh produce, pre-made banchan, and excellent kimchi, this Ktown grocery store also serves some of our favorite kimbap around: tightly wrapped balls of rice filled with pickled vegetables, and OK, yes, sometimes American cheese (just trust us), this is the ideal snack for the car ride home." - Kat Hong

Stinky interior. Deteriorating inside and out. Bad customer service. I'd rather go to the farmer's market at the Grove than ever come back again. My small dog and I were kicked out when a bigger dog kept charging my little one.

Love this store! Just a few minutes away from our house. Fresh fruits and vegetables, with wide selection of meats, and perfect place for your Korean cravings.

Google
Would be a great idea to mention the store closes at 9:45pm, not 10pm. I showed up at 9:54 just to pop in and get a drink that only they carry, but the employee said no one was allowed in after 9:45pm and was actually locking the doors behind him. I know it’s only 15 minutes, but it makes a difference.

Awesome spot-especially if you’re a snack fiend! There’s a lot to love here, looking forward to going back. Parking is easy in their big lot!

Yelp
Let me preface this 5-star review by saying that it's a little biased. We were zipping up Western Ave on the way home from having some Korean BBQ and randomly decided to stop at HK Market because the parking lot looked big and convenient. We were inspired by our lunch and wanted some kimchee and Korean pastries for later. Long story short, when we got home I realized I didn't have my wallet! I took a leap of faith and decided to call the market. They answered promptly and after just a couple minutes of getting on the same page, they confirmed my wallet had been found!!! I drove back and they were so nice when they returned it to me. But even before that ordeal, I have to say that my experience there was really good. They had everything I was looking for. Plus, the cashier was actually friendly and welcoming despite me not being Korean. This market is definitely very local and no-frills. This ain't no big, national H-Mart. Still, don't judge a book by its cover. If you've ever been to a 99 Ranch or Seafood City, you'll comfortably navigate this place. If you do, you'll find all the Korean delights you could ever dream of.

Terry J.

Yelp
I stopped in here basically just to explore to see what the market was all about and what items were of interest and just kinda see what was available to me from the Asian Food. As typical very challenging to get any help in an Asian market secondary to language barriers. I thought the fish section was amazing. Saw some really good things that I definitely know I would want to purchase and cook. . I thought the produce was OK. It wasn't as bountiful as one would imagine but it's not the biggest Asian market in Los Angeles area but it definitely has what you would need. . Overall, I thought it was pretty cool . I picked up a few items non-perishable because I wasn't going back to the house right away . But I could definitely see myself coming over and getting some fish for dinner .

Yelp
My favorite no-frills Korean grocery store with great prices and variety. With an outdoor parking lot. The storefront may look a little dated on the outside, but they have great products for great prices. Their banchans and packed dishes are always well seasoned and affordable. But the star of the show here is their taiyaki and fried chicken station in the back of the store. Freshly made by Korean aunties. It's cash only! And sometimes there's a wait, but it's so worth it. Only $2 for a fresh taiyaki! You can't get a better deal than this.

Yelp
HK Market is the OG market in K-town. Before H-Mart, Zion, California, Galleria market were around this place was it! Apparently they haven't renovated since the 80s and it shows! My mom said she use to bring me here when I was little. I don't remember that, but I do remember HK ( Han Kook) market in the early 2000s use to be open till 3am or 4am, but that's no longer the case. Now the market closes at 10 pm sharp. I prefer HK Market in the area because parking is better then the other Korean markets around, prices are better, great produce section with overall large product availability. Not to mention that there is a fried chicken grandma vendor in the back that does chicken right! I love her!! If you don't mind an outdated store, this market is great! Just remember this isn't H-Mart (which I love) it's an old school market in k-town and am so happy it's still around!

Aaron C.

Yelp
Solid place definitely worth checking out. Always good vibes plus the workers and even customers are helpful with product you might not be knowledgeable on which is a bless. I'd say 10/10 market

Yelp
HK Market: A Friendly Korean Supermarket in LA HK Market stands out among the many Korean supermarkets in LA for its friendly atmosphere. From the warm, welcoming greeting upon entry to the helpful cashiers and baggers, the staff provides a pleasant shopping experience. This market offers a vast selection of Korean groceries, including house-made banchan (side dishes) - some with MSG and some without. They also have a well-stocked refrigerated section and a hot food section with prepared dishes like purple rice, fish cakes, and potato salad. For a sit-down meal, HK Market has one restaurant and a takeaway restaurant in the back which is cash only. One of the restaurants is serving hot stone soup, kimbap, among other things, and the takeaway spot, specializes in red bean pancakes, roasted sweet potatoes, and Korean fried chicken wings. With ample parking available, HK Market is a convenient destination for both grocery shopping and enjoying a delicious Korean meal.

Yelp
Remember when we were kids growing up in LA together? HK Market was a BIG part of our childhood. Our friends taught us how to make homemade Korean food and sushi rolls so we could afford to eat the amazing meals that roll out of here daily. I have a picture somewhere of me as a teenager holding my first homemade platter of kimbap and California rolls while being hugged by my beloved foster sisters and neighbors originally from Japan and Korea. I want to thank the owners and staff members of HK market for being there for so many special occasions and homemade family meals over the years.:) After you enter the market, check out the flyers for Korean events and services adorning the bulletin board on your left. Korean small businesses and vendors, add your businesses and services on Yelp! Yelpers love to support the Asian community and small businesses! On your right, peruse the specialty vendors, hot and tasty treats, premier imported skin products and customer service. Continue to the eastern end of the market and grab a family-sized box of Korean pears, Hawaiian papaya, mangoes, persimmons, or whatever is on sale and in season. HK market has a huge fresh produce section with many hard-to-find items! Stock up on Thai chilies, Chinese celery, Japanese eggplant, Korean radishes, Vietnamese fresh herbs, fresh ube, Kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, taro root, mung bean sprouts, tumeric, shitaki mushrooms, shiso leaves, bitter melon, gai lan, and much more. This market has an excellent selection of meat, fish and poultry. You can buy an inexpensive whole fish, with more than a dozen varieties to choose from. Some favorites include silky chicken, softshell crabs, cuttlefish, paper thin cuts of beef, pork bellies, and whatever the friendly fish guys recommend to me. Thanks! High-end sushi-grade fish, roe, urchin, is available at the northwest corner of the market as well as small well-packaged ready-to-eat items. Some favorites include mung bean pancakes, pickled radish, seaweed salad, and cooked yam. Center aisles are loaded with non-perishable items. Instant, glass, rice, soba, buckwheat, and tapioca noodles. Jasmine, matcha, corn silk, barley, chrysanthemum and many other teas. Rice wine vinegar, rock sugar, banana sauce, wasabi, dried mushrooms, tapioca, potato and glutinous rice flour, nutritious breakfast porridges, sauces and condiments, you can find a nice variety of imported food from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Guam, Singapore, China and beyond. When I was a kid, I absolutely loved sushi, but I couldn't afford to go to sushi restaurants. My neighbors and this market really helped me and my family during those tough times. We had some great meals together. During the pandemic, HK market delivered my favorite carts of food, including many sale items which I'll be forever grateful for. Recently, my HK market has been helping me make a special tribute to Monterey Park, 11 uniquely different varieties of Asian cuisines, made with love for our beloved Asian community. I posted some cool pictures of the food we made together from this market on Instagram. Many thanks to HK market for helping our families make great meals together. To the staff, the butchers, management, cashiers and fellow friendly family shoppers, I am one of your biggest fans.:)

Yelp
Great Asian grocery store with a lot of fresh veggies, pretty good seafood section, and incredibly narrow isles. If I lived nearby this would definitely be a go-to for me. As it is, unsure if it's worth the trek.

Rich C.

Yelp
Always stop her to shop for Korean groceries or new yummy things. The vegetable/fruit section is great and they always have a great variety of items that are fresh. The staff is super helpful and always can find what you are looking for. The lines for check out move pretty quickly so no issues there. Always a great time and finding something new each trip

Duke K.

Yelp
Been coming to this spot for good parking and certain items, for the past 25 years. HK market has certain Korean snacks and beverage that other Korean markets do not. Do not purchase Beef and Pork here. Also always check the Expiration Date on everything. I'd say HK Market is about 15%-20% more expensive than the other cleaner, newer Korean market that's about 4 blocks south of this establishment. 3 stars for their Cashiers at HK!

Ellie R.

Yelp
Fantastic grocery selection with tons of fresh produce, impressive variety, and the best prices around. It's always clean and well organized with tons of parking and a couple security guards. I got some Taiyaki from the bakery in the back and it was fresh, hot and delicious. I've never ordered from the restaurant or the bakery in front, but their selection of banchan is amazing.

Hovhannes K.

Yelp
They are names after my initials. . Well ok that's not the only reason for the review. You really have to see it to believe it.

Jose Y.

Yelp
I really like this market, it's convenient and they have a lot freeze dried veggies. The thing that sucks is that they don't except EBT. But they do have a bakery, not the best but it's better Paris baguette. Plenty of parking and there's a security that oversees the front.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Cool market with lotsa of Korean/Asian items!! Came here after a hair cut and needed some items like Japanese mayo and Korean sides. They had almost everything I needed with the exception of eel sauce and imitation crab - although they had it frozen with mussels and clams. Still, overall a great store. Got a bunch of Korean sides - cucumber, kim chee and other pickled delights. Will definitely come back if I'm in the neighborhood!

Nancy S.

Yelp
I would give them 5 stars because it's my fave place to buy sashimi but I was discriminated against and nothing was done. I get my car washed nearby and I either go pick up sashimi or eat at the restaurant. It's really hot so sashimi sounded better and I went to eat it after I paid for it. Especially because I saw someone who was eating tuna that the bought from the store not the restaurant (which are two different businesses). The man started yelling at me telling me I could not eat there. He could have nice said I needed to buy something and I would've gotten a drink or miso soup. But instead he yells and comes to kick me out. I pointed out the other lady who was not eating restaurant food and he says "it's a one time thing". Hmmm why is it okay for her and not me? The difference is that I am Latina and she was Asian. I went to inform the Manager and he could not care less. Needless to say, I will not be back.

Casey C.

Yelp
This is my go to place for fresh vegetables. The quality and price are second only to the farmers market. If you have been getting mushrooms anywhere else, please stop! This is also where I get sushi grade fish and roe for crazy good prices. There's a huge selection of pantry ingredients that of course, lean Korean. Inlove the ramen selection and there are many gems in the frozen food section.

Louis C.

Yelp
Great selection of Asian food products, produce and seafood. Also, delicious premade foods like kimchi, seaweed salad and full meals. Nice sashimi, too!

Rana S.

Yelp
Truly the dirtiest market in Ktown. I was sent here for meat and was appalled at what was available. Please don't buy meat here, go to H-mart.

Fernanda T.

Yelp
The selection is okay, a bit privey. they close the store before advertised and are generally rude.

Angelica L.

Yelp
We just ate nearby and needed to go grocery shopping so we decided to stop by here. H K Market is very clean with a variety of Korean products for a good price. They're more affordable than HMart when comparing the same products available at both stores. H K Market also has mini storefronts where they sell food or beauty products. There are plenty of parking spaces outside as well.

Scarlett H.

Yelp
A great medium size Korean supermarket with parking right in front and, NOT located in any shopping complex -- which makes it very easy to go in and out and finish what you need. Because it's not as well-known as some of the other markets, it's not as crowded. I recommend their produce department: GREAT selections and great prices as well, Also like their kimchi selections, many varieties and reasonable prices again. Was not super impressed by the meat department or the cooked food department. Thought prices were a bit high and selections were a few, but maybe that's because the production level is lower during the COVID-19 pandemic. Will definitely come back again.

Penny K.

Yelp
One of my go-to Asian Markets. They have everything you need in stock for any type of Asian cuisine including sushi grade fish and a hot food stand with delicious dishes. I always go to this store because they always have everything I need. I never end up having to go to a second store to find an unusual ingredient they do not stock. The produce is fresh and everything is affordable. This has been my no brainier store for years. Parking is ample, as well as the selection of products.

Juri L.

Yelp
One of the best Korean markers in Koreatown! They have everything you need for you korean grocery needs. They also have a fairly large parking lot which is a plus.

Kalley H.

Yelp
What a cute market! They have everything you need when it comes to Asian cuisine, from kimchi to fresh fish, to cheap and fresh produce...they have everything you need! The grocery store is well organized and easy to find what you need. The employees are also very helpful if you have a question. While the produce is cheap, some of the specialty items can get a little pricy. I would love to do my everyday grocery shopping here, but items like orange juice can easily be marked up to $6-7, so I still find myself making a run to Aldi or Walmart for those basic items. There is plenty of free parking which is a life saver! The parking lot and store is never packed too. Sometimes it's steady, but it's relatively quiet and a calm environment which is a blessing when you are grocery shopping and if you want to take your time exploring all of these amazing foods. There is fresh hot food you can buy to eat right away, but I have not tried it yet, but it is available! I would definitely recommend this place. It is lovely!

Diana W.

Yelp
Medium size market with alot of FREE parking. Cheapest to-go sashimi cuts $14-$17 (usually $24+ at California Market plaza). Cheaper fresh produce. There is an area in back selling ready to eat baked yams $5+ for small tray, red bean pancakes shaped as a fish $1.25+, chicken wings $6-$17. They have deals and specials here. Takes credit card. Most Korean markets are pretty difficult or crazy packed. This probably is the semi easiest one to park, get stuff and leave with a car.

Teli P.

Yelp
Such a great market--fresh vegetables, the same stuff you'd get a Von's but--F*R*E*S*H----and then all the stuff you're never going to find at Von's--sesame leaves, daikon, greens. On the other side of the store the seafood coolers, full of sashimi, high grade salmon, fish and pickled vegetables and seafood--all delicious. Convenient to East Hollywood and K-Town, a great place to put together a week of adventurous home meals--wow your friends.

maksim n.

Yelp
Great market place with a great variety of Asian foods, fish and other services within the market. There's a second floor with services that I haven't explored yet and more than likely won't.

Mimi R.

Yelp
Almost everything I need are here. Runs the gamut for eats. Galbi and bulgogi are there to be bought. Dried fish, fresh fish and occasionally, uni.kitchen needs, food, scrubs for bathing to remove dead skin. Then, they have to go cooked food. Furiikaki, omfelets, grilled and fried fish, bancchan by the pound. This grocery. Store makes me happy. The people are friendly and helpful. I

J L.

Yelp
Can I please talk to the manager or owner ? Why are your cashiers soooooo mean to me ? I have never experienced such bad service in my entire life and consistently here. Please for the love of god do something .

ヤッキー Yuki =D K.

Yelp
What can I say that others haven't said. So many goodies. It's my Korean grocery store spot. The prices are right and food is tight! I needed ingredients to make kimchi fried rice and HK Market came through. Best of all they accept Apple Pay, which is a lifesaver because I wasn't carrying cash and my credit card's chip is busted as fuck so I needed an alternative to pay. For anyone who's curious, my kimchi fried rice turned out to be the Bombay dot com, thanks to HK of course.

Grace C.

Yelp
My review is for the hk chicken stand in the back of this market. First of all this market and stand in the back has been around FOREVER. I've been coming here ever since I was a child with my mom and I'm so happy it's still around now. The stand in the back is primarily for korean fried chicken, plain with sweet/spicy sauce given on the side. It's soo good!! Probably one of the OG and best chicken spots. They do not offer marinated korean chicken but the sauce is on the side and just as good. The ladies behind the counter are so sweet and they always give plenty of pickled radish with the chicken (it's a MUST with korean fried chicken!!) I'd also recommend their boong uh bbang- which is a cooked pastry? In the shape of a fish, with red bean inside. They make all this on the spot and it's definitely a childhood favorite. 5/5 go try their chicken and red bean pastry!! * cash only.

Prairie S.

Yelp
For some reason this market doesn't receive the same hype as other Korean grocery stores, which is an advantage during COVID as one can shop there at prime time on a Saturday morning and not be grinding elbows with a dozen Ummas all at once. As well, the entrance is to the open-air, spacious parking lot (hi ventilation!). The produce section has a nicely curated selection of mushrooms at economical prices (which is why I come here) and the usual range of Asian produce. I also browse for pre-packaged Korean brand frozen dumplings which are BOMB! A good market to invest in quality soy sauce and sesame oil. Also, a wide selection of prepared seasoning sauces and spice vats (gojujang!), dried seaweed, and noodle types are available. The best aisle is the far one, with fresh fish, and store-prepared ban chan, pickles, and side dishes. I bought their store-brand kimchi, spiced squid and peanuts, pickled serrano (on a richter spice scale of 10, it's 11), and seaweed. I followed an Umma's lead and picked up their reasonably priced prepared Kim Bap. The lunch I had with my fixings put a smile on my face! This market is my go-to for all Korean groceries!

Thomas J.

Yelp
I just wished they hired someone with customer service skills for the phone: I called in looking to check the stock on products and was rudely hung up on before I could ask about a 3rd and final product. It's a 1 star for me!

HC E.

Yelp
While I have found the prices very competitive, my experience yesterday and today calling on the phone to find whether they restocked an item that was out of stock a few days earlier was met with a woman manager hanging up on me, repeatedly, because she doesn't speak English well. You would think that she would say, hold on, and find someone to answer the question. She was confused, didn't understand the item that I was asking about, said they don't sell it (which they do), but her decision to hang up on me was so rude that I couldn't believe it. Not only did she hang up on me, but when I immediately called back, she picked up the phone and immediately hung up again - and again! I made clear I was a customer - now FORMER customer. I don't ever want to walk in that store again, when they disrespect me so much that when I call about an item, they will just hang up on me. They've lost me as a customer - especially when there's Weee! delivery service. Same good prices, excellent customer service, deliver to your door - and who also value customers who are English speaking.

Chris R.

Yelp
It's a good-sized Korean market with a pretty good restaurant inside. I was able to find everything to make Kimchi and the staples of Korean cooking. The pricing on things like green onions is incredible compared to Ralph's. I wasn't treated poorly by the staff if I need help translating. Also, a pretty good-sized park lot in front.

Ted C.

Yelp
HK market is definitely pretty old school market, they still have a shop out front that sells tv antennas! However, their parking lot is HUGE and while they primarily sell Korean/Asian foods they actually have a Latin/Mexican section while still maintaining that old school Korean market feel of trying to make things as one stop shop as possible (pharmacy on the side, two different snack bars, a bakery.) The produce prices are usually a little cheaper here compared to some of their competitors, but what I like best about HK market is that it's not cramped. The space is large-it's a grocery store after all but unlike a lot of other Korean markets in the area they're not shoving more and more into the aisles and so it makes shopping easier when I don't feel like I'm shopping in a submarine. This would be my go-to market if they carried the brand of kimchi I like, but I usually making a stop here anyway.

Magda D.

Yelp
Excellet produce section including an assortment of bean sprouts and mushrooms I didn't know existed. My goto place for baby boy choy and fresh or dried noodles. They also have a really good assortment of dried seaweed for a store that isn't huge. Oh, and the parking is luxurious by Los Angeles standards.

Gene G.

Yelp
This is my * go to * store when I'm in K. Town. Why do I like HK? 1- Nice atmosphere and not congested 2- Friendly employees ( you will not find this at Hannam ) 3- A particular brand of Frozen Salted Mackerel which I can't find at any other K. Town markets 4- Easy access to 101 North when I depart for my long drive home 5- Clean and organized store They have everything I need for my household plus I get a smile and a thank you from the cashiers ( You will not get that at Hannam ) *** Stop #7 of 7 from my DTLA/K Town excursion. Somehow , I forgot to post # 7 ***

christine Y.

Yelp
I love this place! I also really love the Asian skin care stand there! I think this is the best Asian market in all of Koreatown.

Molly O.

Yelp
A gem in K-Town! Fresh fresh fresh produce and meats, especially the fish! The most awesome noodle and rice selection.

Ryan L.

Yelp
They lie about their hours. Why do y'all say you're open til 10:45 for me to drive all the way over there for y'all to be closed? Why lie about your hours? I don't get it but i won't give y'all a second chance.

Sam S.

Yelp
Wonderful environment Excellent and friendly staff great prices fresh produce and fast check out and they always have great deals and sale a lot of parking very knowledgeable management and highly trained and secured guards you can always feel safe with ur kids And personal belongings I urge you to take a trip and experience greatness in service that's all folks

D K.

Yelp
Local and good selection of products. Produce is good and has most of the items needed. Great for groceries.

Tyler C.

Yelp
One of my must stops in Los Angeles. I love the variety of fruits they offer and the fish choices. They are very friendly and polite each time I'm there.

Sabrina S.

Yelp
So apparently HK Mart and HanKook Mart are one and the same... Cuz when I saw HK...I was thinking HongKong...oops.... Parking is available... Just be careful as the parking spots are very tight and try to come at a off time as the parking lot can get very crowded. FYI I didn't know what to expect when I walked in... This was the second Korean grocery store that I've been to since moving to LA...I figured that branching out of the Korean Town plaza grocery store was a good idea. :) It was very very crowded and kind of in the dirtier side in my opinion. But the amount if stuff they were able to squeeze in was mind blowing. I did the aisle by aisle grocery shopping just to see what they carried and boy did they carry ALOT. The produce was good and from what I could tell it was decently priced. I was able to find everything plus more of what I was looking for. :) I was able to restock all my Korean grocery needs here. Just gotta say though... All those older ladies (ah joom mahs) yelling out their wares were cool for all of 5 minutes... After that it got really annoying and LOUD. It got crazy loud. But they did have a decent banchan selection and the quality was good. I just wished that they had a bigger selection. Overall, it was a good Korean Grocery store. Will I be back... Probably... But there are so many more Korean grocery stores that I need to visit.

grace v.

Yelp
I love this market, I always come in for the tea. I wish they carried kewpie Mayo. But they have a corner front store that sells gimbap, I love it, and the front bakery is delish, almond honey butter toast was delicious. I love this store but they are not the most affordable, but they are very clean and have been relatively nice.

Jon L.

Yelp
Every day, thousands of well-meaning LA transplants brace the crowds and trod into Trader Joe's, where they pay absolutely insane prices for subpar fruits and veggies. These people are too bougie, of course, to shop at Vons, so many of them see TJ as their only option. They begrudgingly buy this terrible produce for a ridiculous markup, and they think to themselves "well, that's just the way it is." But when you've lived in LA for a decade, you pick up some grocery tricks. My biggest one is this: Not only does HK market has a huge selection of veggies that are ridiculously cheap, their fruit -- which is also preeeeeeeetty cheap -- is the best in LA outside of a farmer's market. Their fruit is amazing. I don't know how they manage it, but it's phenomenal. This grocery store has totally ruined shopping for produce anywhere else -- it's so much better quality and value than you'll find at TJ's it's honestly absurd. Oh, also their salmon sashimi in the fish section is top notch, you can get a pound for $15 which is also insane. five stars

Khris G.

Yelp
I have loved shopping at this market for 8 years and have told many people how much I enjoy it until now. On Friday, 08/28 I went to purchase fruit and vegetables. Broccolli, green beans, garlic, 2 nectarines, m&m's and small box of oreo cookies. At the check out, when finished the cashier didnt ask if I wanted a receipt, she just threw it away. Now I know why. Today I reviewed my bank statement and she charged me $192.41. The cashier intentionally stole from me and the proof of that is her throwing away the receipt immediately. If you MUST shop here and are NOT Korean...Demand a receipt because they steal!!

Yelp
This is probably one of the most lack luster Korean markets in k town. The only good thing about this market is that parking is on street level and easy to access. Cleanliness: this store has definitely seen better days. The aisles were a bit grimy and overall market seemed dirty. Selection: very poor selection of Korean food - whether it is ready made or packaged. They had run out of marinated beef brisket on a random Monday afternoon. Staff: the staff was rather unfriendly. The sample lady was way too pushy on asking me to buy the food... discouraged sampling other varieties etc... the cashier had so much disdain for the job- it was obvious in the way she threw the groceries haphazardly to be bagged. People here didn't seem to really like working their and it was obvious in their demeanor to the customers. If I were you I'd go down a few blocks to s mart - also located on western and spend your money there.
