Yelp
Remember when we were kids growing up in LA together? HK Market was a BIG part of our childhood.
Our friends taught us how to make homemade Korean food and sushi rolls so we could afford to eat the amazing meals that roll out of here daily. I have a picture somewhere of me as a teenager holding my first homemade platter of kimbap and California rolls while being hugged by my beloved foster sisters and neighbors originally from Japan and Korea. I want to thank the owners and staff members of HK market for being there for so many special occasions and homemade family meals over the years.:)
After you enter the market, check out the flyers for Korean events and services adorning the bulletin board on your left. Korean small businesses and vendors, add your businesses and services on Yelp! Yelpers love to support the Asian community and small businesses!
On your right, peruse the specialty vendors, hot and tasty treats, premier imported skin products and customer service. Continue to the eastern end of the market and grab a family-sized box of Korean pears, Hawaiian papaya, mangoes, persimmons, or whatever is on sale and in season.
HK market has a huge fresh produce section with many hard-to-find items! Stock up on Thai chilies, Chinese celery, Japanese eggplant, Korean radishes, Vietnamese fresh herbs, fresh ube, Kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, taro root, mung bean sprouts, tumeric, shitaki mushrooms, shiso leaves, bitter melon, gai lan, and much more.
This market has an excellent selection of meat, fish and poultry. You can buy an inexpensive whole fish, with more than a dozen varieties to choose from. Some favorites include silky chicken, softshell crabs, cuttlefish, paper thin cuts of beef, pork bellies, and whatever the friendly fish guys recommend to me. Thanks!
High-end sushi-grade fish, roe, urchin, is available at the northwest corner of the market as well as small well-packaged ready-to-eat items. Some favorites include mung bean pancakes, pickled radish, seaweed salad, and cooked yam.
Center aisles are loaded with non-perishable items. Instant, glass, rice, soba, buckwheat, and tapioca noodles. Jasmine, matcha, corn silk, barley, chrysanthemum and many other teas.
Rice wine vinegar, rock sugar, banana sauce, wasabi, dried mushrooms, tapioca, potato and glutinous rice flour, nutritious breakfast porridges, sauces and condiments, you can find a nice variety of imported food from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Guam, Singapore, China and beyond.
When I was a kid, I absolutely loved sushi, but I couldn't afford to go to sushi restaurants. My neighbors and this market really helped me and my family during those tough times. We had some great meals together. During the pandemic, HK market delivered my favorite carts of food, including many sale items which I'll be forever grateful for.
Recently, my HK market has been helping me make a special tribute to Monterey Park, 11 uniquely different varieties of Asian cuisines, made with love for our beloved Asian community. I posted some cool pictures of the food we made together from this market on Instagram.
Many thanks to HK market for helping our families make great meals together. To the staff, the butchers, management, cashiers and fellow friendly family shoppers, I am one of your biggest fans.:)
