19 Grocery Stores And Specialty Markets To Check Out When You're Sick Of Jewel

"H Mart is a national Korean grocery chain, and happens to be one of our favorite stores for produce, imported snacks, and pre-marinated, grill-ready, meat and whole fish. The location in the West Loop also has a food court where you can get dishes like kimchi stew, sushi, bento, and ramen. Oh, and sheet masks." - courtney sprewer

Tour H Mart Chicago, Collecting Korea’s Culinary Comforts - Eater Chicago

"H Mart is open in Chicago, bringing a full-service Pan Asian grocer and food court to the West Loop. Chicagoans no longer have to venture to the suburbs to visit the chain, which celebrated its opening with music, dancing, and a ribbon cutting. The market opened on Thursday at 711 W. Jackson Boulevard. Lunchers in the West Loop have options including traditional Korean stews, sushi burritos, and Korean fried chicken. The interiors reflect a more urban design compared to H Mart’s suburban locations. This location is more compact. There’s not much seating inside, so be prepared to pounce on a table once customers finish their meals and leave. There’s also a cafe with Korean and European baked goods and coffee." - Ashok Selvam

Google
Great place to shop with a huge variety of groceries, parking is limited but just a little wait if any and you're in. There's a wonderful food court with amazing food . I tried Sangs Kitchen and was greeted by the most lovely attendant which was very nice and pleasant. I tried the "Spicy beef and vegetable soup" and let me tell you-- yes the soup is spicy 🔥 but still can enjoy the food which tasted awesome. If you're close by, check it out and don't forget the food court.

Google
This Asian supermarket offers a great variety of groceries, not just from Korea but also from China, Japan, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian countries. The prices are reasonable for an Asian market, and the store is clean and well-organized. The staff were efficient but not particularly friendly. At checkout, I was told to “flip the basket” and got snickered at when I didn’t understand what they meant right away.

Google
I love the variety! The restaurants inside are amazing. I've added menus for a few, there are a couple more but our favorite is So Gong Dong Tofu and BBQ. The Korean Beef bulgogi(BBQ), Kimchi fried rice, pictured here have Amazing flavors. Great place to shop and grab a bite to eat. The store has a variety of fresh produce, seafood, premarinated meats..like beef bulgogi. Non-marinated meats and much more.

Google
I didn't take pictures as this was my 1st time there with my daughter. It's very nice, I got everything I needed to do a Korean Hot Pot for her. The meat was fresh, cut perfectly and delicious once made. I am definitely going back. People are friendly. I thought I'd feel out of place but definitely worth the drive. Oh, they also have 3 or 4 eatery shops inside and a place to sit and enjoy a meal.

For a smaller H Mart, it was laid out well, and filled to the brim with lovely food. Cashier's and staff were busy but still friendly. The parking lot is free and easy to get in and out of. We hit this on the way out of town and had the best snacks for our road trip!

Google
This place has it all!. A large variety of fruits and vegetables, live fish and seafood area. They make fresh sushi and poke bowls plus a mini food court area with a Paris Baguette Bakery!!. I had so much fun looking around the store. The service was friendly and the store was nice and clean and well organized. I will definitely be coming back for more!. Plus they have a FREE PARKING lot!. Over all I rate this place a 10/10.

Google
Perfect store to explore and go grocery or snack shopping! They have a variety of things, and you're sure to leave with something. They also sell matcha powder, which is great if you're looking for some. They have a small food court available and a cafe that offers some yummy pastries options. This is a great place to hang out with friends or for a date!

Google
the perfect one stop shop for all your asian food needs. i wouldn’t recommend coming for “regular” produce and would instead opt to get it at an aldi or something but this place is amazing and the food stalls are to die for. i had a bulgogi burrito after shopping, it was $15 but well worth!!!! will be coming back soon :))

Yelp
I like to shop Grill Beef and pork here, sea food also fresh. Overall environment is clean and easy to find what you need for cooking Asian gourmet. You can apply membership card to earn rewards. Cashier also very friendly and efficient. They have bread store and traditional Korean restaurants next to it, easy access with simple setting. Come during the weekday. Can avoid crowded ppl and parking . What I like most is they recently added on Korean pens and stationary.

Yelp
I noticed there was an H Mart in between Union Station and the hotel where I was staying, so I started walking. I honestly don't think I've ever been to an H Mart (we don't have them near where I live) but I knew it would be amazing. I didn't buy anything except some ready made food, but I'd love to go back and explore more. I did check the candy/snack aisle and saw some of the items we got in Japan, so that was fun. They have a lot of frozen items, fresh produce, seafood, and more. They also have a little food court area with a few stalls, ready made food (like kimbap, onigiri, sandwiches, sushi, etc.) and a bakery. I grabbed some triangle kimbap and spam musubi. They were both really good and had me feeling nostalgic for Korea and Japan. I'm glad I got to check out H Mart even if I couldn't buy all the things I wanted!
google avatar

Kelli D.

Yelp
This is a smaller version of the H-Mart locations in the suburbs (my favorite is the one in Niles). There is a smaller selection, but it has all the basics. I also got food from one of the three food stalls. The sushi burrito was yummy. It's a great option for Asian food in the city.

Yelp
I have been to H Mart in Koreatown NYC at least every month for a dozen years but it does not compare to H Mart Chicago-Much cleaner with fresher, better priced items especially meats, seafood & vegetables. The service is friendlier with better technology including having a smart savings card to accumulate points to be used anywhere in the USA. Students also get a 5% discount Monday-Thursday. Lastly it has a Seoul inspired international vibe with co-branding of other Asian eateries in their food court including the stat Paris Baguette. Looks like a great place for Lavazza coffees, ramen and other Asian delights. Looks like a great place for a meal near Union Station!
google avatar

Migdalia M.

Yelp
Have a variety of international Korean food items. Vast majority of items not seen in common grocery stores with some exceptions.
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
Huge place, you must check out the food court! The workers aren't the friendliest but they have a great selection of everything! If you go to the food court check out sjd! I got A1 with beef regular spicy level. This was not that spicy!! Huge portion, and came with a side of rice, kimchi and corn.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best H Marts! The little food court is excellent and all the produce is fresh and good. The seafood area never smells either like it does in other H Marts. Great place to stock up on Asian goods!
google avatar

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Some interesting never seen before products and food, see pictures. Check out this pink glow pineapple. We got a few drink flavors we have never tried before and some snacks. Korean sushi and fruit. Our go to place for snacks. Good meal kit or ready to eat items. A few restaurants in the food court, etc. Their quality has always been good for us, but the cost reflects it. Atmosphere - Open 7 days a week from 9am to 10pm. Small parking lot. Service - Good. Price - Above average, but you have to pay for quality. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success. We did not expect to see a H Mart in Chicago. Fun facts: The "H" in "H Mart" stands for Han Ah Reum - a Korean phrase meaning "one arm full of groceries." Congrats on being the largest Asian American Supermarket with 84 locations, including international locations in Canada and London, especially from your humble first 1982 store in Queens, NY.

Yelp
One stop shop for all your Korean food cravings. Fresh produce and meat. Bulgogi packages are convenient and all you need is the bulgogi marinade. So many varieties of Ramen, snacks and dumplings. There's a small food court section but didn't have time to sit and enjoy but next time. There's also the Paris Baguette bakery with savory croquettes, donuts and croissants. Parking is limited but we got lucky and able to find a spot in the private lot.
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Okay store. Small but a nice assortment of items. Was able to get a few familiar items as well as some new, and some sales items. Would go back if in the area and can afford it.
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
Grocery portion is expansive, they have everything you'll need -- at a premium. Competing Asian supermarkets in Chinatown are cheaper, but you pay for the convenience. 88 market is Hmart cleanliness and quality at a lower price. Food court is delicious but expensive and small-ish portions. Their ready-to-eat food is also very expensive. Stick to the grocery section. Ample parking is available and the spots are nice and big.
google avatar

Mahsa S.

Yelp
Hmart is a fantastic place for fresh groceries! They have great quality meat and incredibly fresh fish, perfect for making sushi at home. The French cafe cakes are amazing--definitely worth a try. Plus, the in-store food options are delicious and offer a great variety. It's my go-to spot for both specialty items and everyday essentials!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Korean and other Asian grocery store. Great fresh vegetables. Amazing array of refrigerated and frozen food. So many sauces for cooking. Good sake selection. Great fresh meat section. Many other positives. Also several very good little take-away restaurants within the store plus a french bakery.

S. D.

Yelp
Fantastic grocery shopping --all with a Paris Baguette pastry shop inside to boot! Hot foods available "to go" in the deli section. The sheer amount of selection at H-Mart is unbelievable. Prices were very good.

Jake D.

Yelp
Super cool, diverse groceries, not discounted though. Korean and many types of asian and nice cafeteria
google avatar

Cheyenne G.

Yelp
I love their freshly made vegetable kimbap! In addition, there's a wonderful selection of pantry items to stock up on. And fantastic fresh produce!
google avatar

Solomon K.

Yelp
A quintessential grocery store to meet all your Korean needs. Central location is convenient, though parking during peak hours is limited even with their private parking lot. I will say the prices are slightly inflated compared to suburb hmart prices, but that's expected. Overall really clean and great quality produce and meats. They also have a Paris baguette in store and small food court for that post grocery shopping meal.

Yelp
TLDR: My favorite grocery store in the city and the best Asian grocer in town, hands down. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's small... But they have frozen durian, natto, kimchi, a lot of my favorite Japanese snacks (including senbei), thinly sliced pork and beef for at-home yakiniku or shabu shabu, AND Asian pears!! I'm a simple girl. I don't ask for a lot. I just want everything I want, ya know? H Mart has a lot of my faves. My bf doesn't understand my obsession with H Mart. The best way I can explain it to him is, it's what Trader Joe's is to white women. Also, they have a parking lot so I can load up my car. Does anyone else pretend to have a big family when they're shopping for snacks? No? (Totally unrelated but can someone loan me their toddler for like 45 min?) I just wish there was another one closer to me! Who am I kidding, I'd be broke if I lived any closer to an H Mart.
google avatar

Josalyn M.

Yelp
H Mart is now my favorite Asian store to pickup foreign snacks, baked goods, meat, and fresh produce. The hubby and I have been meaning to stop by so today was our day! It was busy but we did not mind one bit. Plenty of hand sanitizers everywhere for you to use especially near the food court. We were hungry so we decided to stop and eat first before shopping. The husband ordered hot wings and boy they were delicious. I ordered the Buligogi burrito and it was also delicious. My pineapple Boba tea was the perfect pairing for those spicy wings. I will be definitely back to try some more items on the money and to shop K food yummy snacks.
google avatar

Cati K.

Yelp
Hmart is always great wherever you go. This one is a little smaller than the ones I've seen in the DMV area, but it's still much bigger than one in Ktown, NYC. I'm always amazed how they are able to fit so much stuff in the store. I never have a problem finding anything, and they even have a great little food court. The last time I got soon do bu jigae, and it was so good. The amount of food you get and the quality is definitely worth the price. The staff is also always so friendly and polite.
google avatar

Kimy P.

Yelp
After a couple of years of going to other Hmart's in the country, I will have to update my 4 star to 5 star. The quality of this Hmart is great and the food as well. I love my tofu bibibamp and vegetable kimbap from here. I actually came here twice on my last visit to Chicago :)
google avatar

Latifah A.

Yelp
What a gem of a place!! I didn't know this place existed. The BEST Asian market I've ever been to. It has literally everything from live seafood to restaurants inside. I highly recommend checking k this place out.
google avatar

Xtina K.

Yelp
They have a good selection of food, but some things are extremely pricy. Not sure the reason behind, but I needed peppers and I had to go somewhere else for that, the price was very high for only few jalapeños or Thai chilies. I only got what I needed from there specifically and that's all. They had good service though, nice staff, and very clean.

Yelp
What an amazing store! Really love here at H-Mart because of its fresh fish, fresh fruit and produce and other items you can find or buy elsewhere! Shopping here is an experience. The store is very clean and organized. They also have such a great assortment of food from Asia. Not cluttered but filled with interesting items. Love this place! Will be back again. Thanks for the memories guys.

Mohamed S.

Yelp
Do not go over here. They sold un fresh vegetables. And sometimes the vegetables has gone bad. And also my car damaged from their carts and i asked their worker and they don't care about this issues. So i had to police station make a police report. DO NOT COME THIS LOCATIONS

Yelp
Great to have this well-known Korean grocery store in downtown Chicago! I loved walking around, wandering the aisles, and admiring all the cool specialty items offered. There's a neat seafood area with live fish, sushi, and poke. And I want to buy all of the snacks! Be forewarned that the prices of a lot of items are high. But as such a highly specialized store in the heart of downtown with incredible selection, I'm sure they've got bills to pay. The sheer variety they have of a single item (I counted over 20 brands of sesame oil alone) is astounding. There's also a food court that has some really delicious looking food, including tofu stew, korean barbecue, and Japanese. Definitely worth a visit! There's a dedicated parking lot on the side which was full when I came, but there street out in front was under construction/blocked off and didn't have any warning signs, so I just parked there.
google avatar

Yelp
Food review will be with sgd dubu so gong! (Restaraunt in food court) I think this is one of the best centers to get popularised korean food. The food court is tight and small but holds most of the things you would crave for and isn't americanised. It has fried chicken, cheese corn dogs, korean cake & bread, sushi and soondubu. The hmart can be a bit pricy, but often has sales on asian veg and fruit. They also tend to have popular items like fire noodles and yogurt drinks, just a very tight space. Overall come here to fulfill your craving of korean food if you are near :). Actually this was the first hmart I've seen to have a spam musubi section which was interesting. The busses in Greek Town ( close by) are often delayed though just FYI.
google avatar

Micah K.

Yelp
This is not your typical grocery store. This is the place you come to explore and expand your taste buds! This location is very small compared to the H Mart's in any suburban area but that's what makes it great! Sure the selection is slimmer and the aisles are barely passable if several people are looking for the same thing. Yet, this is the location that can introduce you the the vast food varieties that the Asian cultures have to offer without completely overwhelming your senses. Whether you're trying to recreate that amazing hot pot dinner you had, try a new spin on seasoned meats, or just discover a new snack from around the world, you'll find everything you need to do so. Every time I come to this store, it inspires me to think outside the box, make something new, and appreciate culinary cultures. Love this place! And the FRESH KIMCHI!

Yelp
H Mart used to be one of my favorite supermarkets, but today I'm really disappointed. It's so disgusting. The ingredients are extremely not fresh, and the after-sales service is also extremely bad and uncomponsible. I bought some fish at H Mart today, two of them are salted fish, which makes me sick. When I got home, I was going to use it as our dinner. When I opened it, I washed it and put it on a plate. Then I was about to boil water and steam it. But when I look back, I found that there were maggots on the fish and they were still moving. I know that the freshness of salted fish is definitely can not compared with other fresh fish, but it won't open up maggots, right? And it's still moving. At that time, I immediately took it to the store to ask for help, but Jongchul, the manager on duty, did not give us a reasonable analysis. He just told us that it was not surprising. It had happened before. He also said that it was possible that the fish ate and did not know what caused the body to grow parasites. At that time, I was really surprised to hear this answer. Didn't you check the goods before they were put on the shelves? In addition, you also know that this is not the first time it has happened. Don't you need to check that there is something wrong with that link? Is it the problem of fish worms caused by temperature or insufficient salt or the original supply source? Don't you need to investigate and deal with it? Just reply to me that this problem happens from time to time, and it doesn't say that the problematic fish will be removed from the shelves to deal with, and that's it? This is the how you treat your customers???

Yelp
This is a great Asian grocery store. They sell a lot of ingredients that you cannot find in typical grocers like udon noodles, and authentic Asian seasoning or candies. They also have your typical Asian food that is precooked and just requires a simple warm up. My favorite thing about this store is simply being able to walk around and look at the large variety of items that I can cook myself instead of ordering takeout. After the pandemic I wanted to learn more about cooking different types of foods and visiting H Mart has made that easier to accomplish! You can also dine in and enjoy authentic cuisines. Happy Shopping!

Shawna L.

Yelp
Lots of cool stuff freshly made food. The employee was very nice that worked there. Even the atmosphere was cool. Good prices on seafood!! I would definitely go back.

Raymi D.

Yelp
Amazing and clean. They have pretty much everything. New favorite store for sure. They even have a bakery that looks so delicious.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
Store was clean and welcoming. Selection was fresh and great. I stopped in during a quick trip to Chicago. I wish I had an H-Mart in Minneapolis! It's a must stop anytime I travel to an area with one in the area.
google avatar

Joee G.

Yelp
I love coming to Hmart to purchase unique foods that I may not be able to find elsewhere. I have enjoyed the ingredients to make bibimbap at home and everything is freshly prepared and well packaged. I also recently checked out the hot food court and tried the Korean corn dog with potato on the outside. I've noticed an unfortunate trend that Korean corn dogs take way too long to be prepared, but these were overall decent. The appearance was spot on, but the coating and outside needing more seasoning (it was quite bland). The addition of ketchup and honey mustard was great, but not something I'd come back to get again.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
I am so glad I do not have to travel to the suburbs to visit an H-mart! If you're planning on driving, I would try to come here on off-times because the parking lot is small. Most importantly, parking is free! The H-mart is small, but it has all the Asian grocery essentials you're looking for. There's also a little cafe area with different vendors serving Korean dishes, dessert, etc.!
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Smaller than I expected. Doesn't have that much fresh produce. Very clean inside and there is a small food court! As of 7/25/21 they are still requiring masks to be worn inside.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
This H Mart isn't as large are some of the H-Marts I've been to in LA, but man, they do pack in a LOT at this location given the size, and it feels very new and modern on the inside which is great. A lot of items can be on the pricier side, abs given that they have prime real estate right in downtown as well as the rising costs of food, it kind of makes sense. If you're looking for a place that sells virtually almost all Asian foods, sauces, products, etc... this would be a fantastic option for you. Obviously, H-Mart is Korean mostly, but you can still find other Asian products here. I was happy to visit this location the other day since I was nearby and needed some groceries as well as a KBBQ grill. I was able to get one for $30 and decided to buy some brisket that day as well to cook some KBBQ at home. It was delicious! Anyways, I'd 100% recommend this store if you're in the area looking for Korean or Asian products and food. Parking lot is fairly ample given it is located in downtown. The lay out of the parking lot and where the store entrance is kind of interesting, but not hard to figure out. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Tae Kyung Y.

Yelp
This H-Mart was a pleasure to visit. It's not your biggest H-Mart, but I do like the fact that this is conveniently located in Downtown Chicago even not within the Koreatown vicinity. We were able to pick up a few groceries here during our trip, and Chicago is definitely on the pricier side when it comes to goods, and this location is not your biggest Hmart, but it has everything you need and they even have a food court that features Tore Ore & Paris Baguette. The parking situation on the other hand is a little tricky, but mind you not -- we're talking about Downtown Chicago. I believe they do have one more location near the Korean presence, but if you're in DT Chicago and are in a quick need of Asian groceries, this Hmart is your place to go!
google avatar

Yelp
The service was standard for what I expect as a market restaurant. The food court itself was nothing out of the ordinary. Parking is easy as they have their own parking spaces, and you can grocery shop afterwards. However, the food was... mediocre at best. The dishes I got were: [2/5] Dishes SoGong-Dong | Soondubu Jjigae - Mixed, Regular | $12.99 To preface, I LOVE the SGD in Glenview. I get the Soondubu Jjigae regularly. I expected some quality difference, but not to the extent of rating this location a 2-star. To start, you get less side dishes, which is obvious given the market cafeteria vibes. I don't dock it for that, but it does play into the overall experience. The three biggest sin that really knocked their rating down was the following: 1. Salty, like REALLY salty. I went through my rice so quick. 2. Clam shell shards. I can forgive using itty bitty clams, but the dish was full of clam shrapnel. I can't enjoy it if every spoonful had some clam shells in it. My Ca is between 8.5-10 mg/dL :) 3. The meats... were jerky??? I have never EVER had such tough thin slice meat. I thought I was eating jerky. That about killed the dish for me. Be wary SGD lovers, this place is not like the OG location. [1/5] Dishes --- Sang's Kitchen | Honeydew Bubble Tea | $5.50 Trying to refresh my soul after the salty Soondubu Jjigae, I turned to Sang's Kitchen for some bubble tea. How bad can it be? Pretty bad. The taste of the honey dew was very... unnatural. It had a slight slimey consistency. The boba? Hard as rocks. Speaking of rocks, there were particulates of the powder mix they used...Seriously, nothing redeeming about this drink.

K J.

Yelp
Super overpriced. Not just a few dollars when compared to other Korean grocery stores. Some items are literally $10 more. Ridiculously overpriced. Lots of spoiled vegetables and fruits. Sometimes boxes of fruits are spoiled. Straight spoiled. Potatoes are spoiled and the Korean radish looks like it's been there for months. Just really low standards and quality. $4 for 2 mini bundles of chives?! Yea, Hmart is definitely taking advantage of their customers- getting what they can out of them. Sometimes I'm in disbelief as to what they are selling - such low standards, knowingly.

Yelp
Just a brisk walk from Union Station, this link in the familiar NJ-based Korean-American grocery chain defies physics. In this compact space, you'll find not only a full-service Asian grocery, but also a small food court with a Café L'Ami, an SGD Dubu (Korean restaurant), an Izakaya Yume, and a Baru "Mindful Asian" that purports to healthy fried fare and starches. I've never eaten in the food court, and I've bought few actual groceries from among the extensive noodle and dumpling selections that are highlights along with the live fish offerings. Also notable are the housewares and beauty products. (The dessert- and coffee-themed hair products are baffling to me, because I can think of few combinations more gag-inducing than finding hair in food or drink, but that may just be me.) But I digress. Though I've checked in only twice, I actually drop by this location whenever I'm in Chicago, which is often. Perusing the aisles is a fun way to kill an hour while waiting for your train, and the grab-and-go section offers fresher, tastier, more interesting food than even the fanciest restaurants you'll find in pretty much any airport, which is where I was headed on this occasion. The twin-pack of Spam musubi contains a pair of individually wrapped portions and gives a 51¢ discount over purchasing them separately. These and the kimbap stayed fresh after many hours in my bag. In fact, I ate it the next day once I arrived home -- where we have two Trader Joes but no H Mart -- and now I'm craving another.

Yelp
One of the cleanest grocery stores in Chicago. Wipes, antibacterial spray and gloves are available at the front door. Wipe down your cart or basket, wear your required face mask, and start shopping. So many great choices. Aisles filled with oodles of noodles, a kimchi wall, trays of sushi and spices galore. Grab a box of plum or ginseng tea. Love Hello Kitty? They even have rolls of Hello Kitty TP. Want mushrooms? Enoki are only $.99 per package. Great deals on other fruits and veggies. Weekly specials include $1.49 for 18 farm fresh eggs. Check out their BOGO to go prepped meals as well. Parking is free in a ground lot next to the store.

Yelp
I love H-Mart. Very clean and great food. Love their to-go options and their French Thai bakery. Great for some pastries. Usually very fresh produce items as well for better prices than Jewel.
google avatar

Lucky R.

Yelp
It's just way too expensive. I can't justify the prices. Super clean. The food is just ok. I don't mind paying for something extraordinary but I can get a lot of this stuff at 88 marketplace, argyle and broadway or the Korean store off 90-94.
google avatar

Jasmine V.

Yelp
Came for the korean corn dogs! They were yummy but I wish they had one with a meat and cheese combo. They were only one or the other. Still good though. We got the ramen noodle hot dog and sweet potato mozzarella dog (no dog just cheese inside) the picture on the menu was misleading showing meat inside that corn dog.

Yelp
As an Asian living in downtown, Hmart has been one of my go-to spots for grocery shopping. Always get the noodles, sauces, frozen dumplings and yakult from there. While I do appreciate the convenience brought by Hmart, I am sometimes disappointed by the quality control implemented by the store. I have seen expired food on the shelves for more than once. Hopefully they could see the post and get this improved.

Yelp
Worst customer service, cashiers are rude. Fruits are rotting on the display. They can't put the shopping baskets away and will yell at you to do it.

Yelp
Review for sashimi special only Covid sushi! Both Joong Boo anf HMart offer sashimi platter specials on wednesday and friday each week. You call to reserve a platter on the day of. We called downtown on jackson st hmart for one on Wednesday 10 am and Joong Boo around noon on friday in order to compare them. They are both good. The Hmart is $30 and the Joong Boo is $25 but the Joong Boo has more fish, more variety, and includes more wasabi and pickled ginger. Hmart was cut thicker, and had lots of salmon, and the tuna was richer tasting, but the joong boo had white tuna, fluke, red snapper, tuna and salmon in nearly equal proportions. Variety may change depending on what they have in stock- this was early june 2020. These are cut from frozen which is fine; bring them to room temp if you want them to taste like a restaurant. Very good deal either way but we prefer Joong Boo. My wife ordered both in Korean.

Yelp
The Queen is a frequent shopper at this location to the point that it is her primary store, with Mariano a close second. She is a lover and connoisseur of all things ramen and other Asian treats. For the longest, she was ordering items from Amazon until she discovered this store not too far from her dorm at UIC. I have seen the various items she has brought home and have actually enjoyed the different ramen dishes she prepared for us from ingredients bought there. While not as prolific as The Queen when it comes to a love of Asian food, I do love dumplings and BBQ pork belly char siu bao. So when she decided to make a trip down there to do some shopping, I decided I would go with just to have a look around. First of all I am giving them the extra star for their protocols for COVID. Not only do they require you to wear masks, they had a big bottle of hand sanitizer, wipes and disposable gloves. Once inside the store, I was struck at how organized it was. While it had been my first time in the store, it was not difficult to locate items. If you are like The Queen and have a love of ramen and Asian products in general, this is the store. I was particularly happy at the large selection of dumplings they had and in nice size bags. I also found my BBQ pork belly char siu bao and was in heaven. The selection of dumplings made me tingly as they had a variety of meat and seafood types. I even found one with octopus...yum! My prized find was the moon pies I love so much and they had them in chocolate. Heaven! Pretty sure they don't call them moon pies, but not an issue as they taste great. The Queen introduced me to this veggie and shrimp snack item. Think of an air puffed Cheeto without the orange powder. It literally melted in my mouth and the flavors were actually pretty good. The meats looks great as well as the fresh seafood and they also have nice looking produce. If you are someone like The Queen that likes to make your own Asian dishes, this is the place to go. They have a lot of the traditional sauces and spices one would use, the different broths and soy milks to make the broths for ramen as well as the different noodles. The Queen was the one that educated me to the fact that ramen is not just ramen, that they are different types of noodles based on the type of broth you are making....color me surprised. The day we were there, the restaurants were closed, but The Queen mentioned that before COVID, she use to go there to grab a bite before shopping. The store is very clean and the staff was nice and everyone was wearing masks. And if you are a fan of Hello Kitty, man this is the store for you! There is HK toilet paper. My only complaint about this place is the parking lot, but that is because this joint is off the chain. We got down there 10 minutes, hear me, 10 minutes after they opened and the lot was full. Ended up parking on the street in front of the store in a metered spot, not a big deal. But that just gives you an idea how popular this place is. I will definitely being going back for more dumplings, BQ pork belly char siu bao and moon pies.
