Korean Grocer H Mart Is Opening a New Store on the Upper East Side - Eater NY

"H Mart is headed to the Upper East Side. The cult-favorite Korean grocer, known for its all-encompassing snack aisles and ample frozen foods selection, has signed on an Upper East Side space at 223 E. 86th Street, between Second and Third avenues, the Real Deal reports. The 8,500-square-foot store is slated to open this summer, joining locations of H Mart in Bayside, the East Village, Flushing, Koreatown, Morningside Heights, and most recently, Long Island City." - Luke Fortney

H Mart Opens in the East Village on Third Avenue - Eater NY

Aslo, there is a BBQ chicken (the name of the brand, it's not actually bar-b-que flavored) inside of this H Mart that I think is as good as any Korean fried chicken in New York.

This is where I used to shop when I was living in the neighborhood. They have a good selection of Asian foods. I got kimchi and vegetable kimbab today. The kimbab was delicious, with balanced savory and sweetness to it. The vegetables were sliced finely. The whole thing was nice. I’d like to come back and try their other items.

A very clean, beautiful, organized Korean market. But the prices are crazy. Worth going, there is a lot of variety of products. Plus, they sell my favorite fried chicken 🤤😍 bb.q Korean Fried Chicken 👌

I was walking home from dinner with my big bro and he hit me with "Aye I need to pick up some oyster sauce, wanna pop into the grocery store with me?" That's some grown man business, picking up some oyster sauce from the Korean market lol. Respect. We popped in and H Mart was PACKED. Standing room only. I perused around while big bro hunted for his oyster sauce, and I wanted to buy everything. So many snacks I had never seen before. I felt like I was back in Japan or Vietnam. I got analysis paralysis and ended up not getting anything. I almost bought some meat as they had such a wide selection of things I never see at TJs or Whole Foods, but it was lowkey pretty expensive and my pockets are on featherweight. Big bro found a new oyster sauce per an employee's recommendation, as the one he currently had was "not viscous enough." He different. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

Google
Came here for the first time & had to come back a second time . Love love love !! From store upkeep & cleanliness to a variety of snacks, fruits and foods galore down to the employees/cashiers working in such a fast paced , well equipped positive manner . Seriously tho the cashiers are very polite & positive and emit a very welcoming and warm ambience in the market . I used to go to the hmart down in 34th but I think this will be the new go-to. Definitely check out their beers/alcohol section, you’ll find gold !🍻The store may seem a little small but the variety of produce and foods and etc make up for it by a lot . This store will not disappoint, so much so that I had to come back the next day ..and I’ll do it again 🤍! Take my word.

Check that your veggies are fresh before going home. I bought some king oyster mushrooms and they were falling apart when I tried to use them the same day.

Google
the Korean supermarket is stocked with a lot of different Asian food goods. the actual space is fairly small for a supermarket BUT it doesn’t feel like that bc the store is really well organized and has so many items shelved neatly. beyond behind really clean and well-maintained, the store consistently stocks items and brands and rarely is “out” of anything no matter the time of day or night. there is also a fair amount of Asian-centric kitchen ware close to checkout. the store has a good energy vibe and the employees are pleasant and helpful. ‘Sides H Mart always has Japanese KitKats in stock which is a plus in my book for any grocery spot.

Google
Great selection of Asian groceries, including asian fruits, dry and wet ingredients (so many types of Kimchi), ready to eat hot and cold food section, ramen, Asian varieties of KitKat, Lays, ice cream etc. Prices are slightly above average for typical groceries but if you want to get anything specific for (East) Asian or Asian inspired cooking, this is the place to go to get everything in one spot. They also have tons of items under $5 if you just want to experience or experiment with certain items. Interestingly, there are also some typical non Asian store products like yogurts and cheese.

Google
I usually go to this Hmart, their meat area are good, but I’m disappointed about their baked sweet potato, I bought one pack and there have two small sweet potatoes, and all of them are bad and cannot be eaten. Don’t buy those!

Yelp
Hmart is the spot for all your Korean faves! The ready-made kimbap is fire, perfect for a quick bite, and the kimchi is always on point. Their fish selection? Top tier. Plus, they've got some of the best pork ribs and meats around, along with all the sauces you need to elevate your meals. It's a one-stop shop for everything you need, and I always leave with more than I planned. Honestly, it's one of my favorite places to hit up when I'm craving something legit. Thank me later!

Yelp
This location has recently established a mask ban and told a disabled friend of mine that they will be escorted out by security if they enter wearing a mask. It is absolutely appalling to hear that they would endanger their customers in this fashion (and rather ironic really, considering how common it is to wear a mask when sick or immunocompromised in Korea). Who are they to decide whether someone has a medical need to mask based on appearance alone? HMART was one of my favorite places to shop, but they won't be receiving a single cent from me anymore.

Yelp
Great H mart by union square. It has hot deli section for to-go. It even has boxes from BBQ chicken next door. Grocery looks fresh.

Yelp
I come here once in a while when I want to avoid the crowds at the H Mart in KTowm. This one is very compact and quite cramped kind Of like a submarine but the good thing about it is that they do sell hot food.

Yelp
I've been meaning to check out this H Mart since they opened! Very impressed by the size and variety of products / sections and curations of items!!! I was pleasantly surprised by how many items and sections they were able to fit into this store given its in Manhattan! They have produce section, an expansive huge selection of kimchi / prepared dishes, full cases of fresh desserts / salads, fresh cut fruits / mochis, they even have a whole area dedicated to fried chicken (BBQ chicken), bread, cake/mochi, and hot food. An aisle of dishes & utensils. Aisles and aisles of snacks and condiments. And finally a whole big wall of ramen! The frozen fridge areas are impressive too - the ice cream selections gave me some serious decision paralysis! I want everything! The aisle/spacing is bit narrow and could get a bit crammed. It's hard to fit more than one person. That's totally understandable though - gotta optimize that real estate space to fit all the goodies! I would happily trade all the spaces for more food galore!

Yelp
The hot food at Hmart never disappoints. Such a great way to try something new on the go!

Yelp
Cleanest, most organized grocery store I've ever seen (check my pictures). Night and day compared to the Hmart in Ktown. The workers here are always tidying up the store, making sure everything is organized correctly, and that all items are put back to their correct locations. Checkout is super fast and they'll bag everything for you as well. This has become our go to spot for asian groceries now!

Scott P.

Yelp
Best Korean grocery store around. Great hot food (just don't get it before they close) and everything is really clean and lots of variety and choices. Great services from the counter and food servers.

Yelp
Decent H-Mart but smaller than some locations I've been to. It has the usual selection, just less of everything. Good if they have what you need.
google avatar

Yelp
Compared to the H Mart in Long Island City, this place is smaller. The place has everything one can need. The prices here are similar to the ones in Long Island City due to inflation and the pandemic. When I entered, I saw that they have tteokbokki spicy rice cake, which was too spicy for me. Similar to the one in Long Island CIty, the supermarket also has Chinese and Japanese products. Would come again.
google avatar

Yelp
Just to be clear that this H Mart is solid for Manhattan, but in other parts of the country, it would be considered small and lacking. As you enter, there is a security guard who sprays hand sanitizer on you. It does give you the feeling like big brother is always watching though. The store is very small, so when it's crowded with people, it can be hard to maneuver through the tiny aisles. Produce: Fresh with multiple options. They don't have every single Asian vegetable you might need, but they do have all the major ones. Prices are on the more expensive side though Bakery/Pre-made Food: Haven't bought anything from here, but there seems to be a good selection of options in that area Frozen Food: They have multiple dumpling options, as well as, frozen noodles and buns. Alas, I couldn't find any frozen taro buns amongst the offerings Ramen: entire aisle worth of ramen! They do sell individual packs (at a slightly higher price), so you can try before committing. Sauces: They have all the basic sauces that you might need, but if you want larger quantities for cheaper prices, then it would be better to go to Chinatown Overall: Definitely better than the H Mart in Ktown, but it is smaller and more expensive than the supermarkets in Chinatown

Yelp
I'm in love with this H-Mart, although some items are more expensive than other H-Marts but it's understandable since it's in a prime location. Fruits and vegetables are very fresh. The store is very clean. There's no fresh seafood or meat, just frozen. Excellent variety of frozen food like dumplings (there's literally a whole wall of it), buns, pancakes, noodles, etc. every turn into H-mart leads a surprise with goodies. Amazing instant noodle aisle and snacks aisle. Btw: look for the manager special; they're great savings!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
The tiniest H Mart I have ever been to. Everything is compact and the aisles are cramped. The prices are a bit higher compared to other Asian markets. There was no fresh seafood or meat, just frozen, which is disappointing. This location just seems to be filled with premade food and other kinds of junk food like Pocky and candy. The only thing going for this location of H Mart is its convenient location. There's no bathroom for customers. A security guard stands at the door and scrutinizes anyone that tries to shop in peace.
google avatar

Yelp
I get Korean 7-Eleven vibes upon visiting this new H-Mart location in the East Village. I usually come here for their fresh produce or for some of their cooked food items. They have a large variety of chips and ramen! You'll also find a variety of some cooking ingredients, appliances, ice cream, beauty products, cookware, fresh bread, etc. there's a "standing" area where you can eat your food facing the streets. Lines nice fast whenever i go, so not sure about the usual crowds. Their prices are fair enough. I do see a few products I can get cheaper in a chinese market if you know where to look.
google avatar

Leilani S.

Yelp
Love this Hmart! Hmart has literally has everything from fresh produce, frozen food, marinated meats, Korean side dishes, to ready to eat meals. This your one stop shop for Korean food! This place is super clean and everyone in there is nice! The one downside is the store is very small and cramped. Have to squeeze by people and you can't use a cart, so I you just have to use a basket and lug it around the store
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Wow, now this is how you build out an Hmart, the most impressive I've seen in awhile. I was surprised how fresh and wonderful their produce and fruits were, at their solid and cleanly packaged meats, and at how much stuff they managed to cram in here without being suffocating - perhaps in thanks to the good lighting, colorful signs, and good layout. There are much bigger and well-known supermarkets in the area with sadder looking "fresh" items laying around. They have several good banchan/side dish/ready-to-eat sections, some by the kimchi section and others by the K-chicken kitchen. The bakery is looking good and there are seemingly long stretches of easy-to-prepare refrigerated, frozen, and ready-to-eat packaged foods and hand-made dishes. If only I had a larger fridge instead of a small one in my humble studio kitchenette! Only sad thing is that Hmarts in Manhattan still doesn't participate in their rewards/loyalty program. Get with the program, guys! They also have a ton of great premium - both instant and even refrigerated - ramyun/ramen in their store. It wasn't too crowded when I went on a slow Sunday afternoon, but I also think they can better label and prepare their checkout lines for when it does get packed. Other than that, this place has a lot of promise and is absolutely miles better than the old one in Koreatown. If Hmart as a brand gets better at marketing with authenticity (instead of having that cold and clinical, Asian-corporation vibe), connects with locals instead of just major Asian-American celebrities and brands, and improve their customer service and return policy to match those of powerhouses nearby, I truly believe this niche supermarket can explode mainstream! Good job team, someone really thought this through and I'm hoping to see more Hmarts in Manhattan like this in the future!

Yelp
The new H Mart in the East Village is pretty sweet and here to fill the void m2m left when they closed. Spacious and tidy aisles reminiscent of supermarkets in the suburbs. I'm totally like a kid in a candy store at an asian supermarket. Several fridges packed to the brim with dozens of varieties of dumplings? Check. An entire aisle dedicated to asian chips, which include Korean Doritos and the classic, funky shrimp chips? Check. Japanese mascara, socks, and pans in another aisle? They know how to give the people what they want! I've been going to the 32nd st location for years, and that one's so much more cramped than this one. This new location even has a bakery section and what looks to me like a hot food section (wasn't set up when I went). Prices are pretty high, especially if you're comparing to Asian markets in the outer boroughs or even to Trader Joes. But considering a lot of their food is probably imported, I guess this is to be expected. I know I'll definitely be returning many more times for my banchan and dumpling needs.

Yelp
What a great idea for H Mart to open its location in East Village where there is an abundance of hungry college students who would be shopping there. You would find a wide range of frozen food items as well as those that are perfect for your hot pot nights. Different brands and types of dumplings, noodles, ice cream, mochi, drinks, you name it. There are also household items such as rice cookers, shampoo, kitchen and laundry supplies so pretty much anything you need for your dormitory life. There are fresh fruits and bakery sections too. I was there early am and it looks like there will be hot food items available soon. I'm a regular at H Mart and am so glad to find one that's at a convenient location. Happy shopping!
google avatar

Yelp
SO MANY SIDE DISHES AND DINNER ENTREES. Great assortment of grab and go snacks. Lots of Asian drinks! Always hungry and willing to try new stuff from here. They have a pastry area where you can purchase breads and cookies. And a hot plate area where you can get fresh hot foods to go. Accepts EBT for groceries.
google avatar

Vivian S.

Yelp
There are actually a decent amount of vegan prepared foods items! Grocery prices are expensive as expected in Hmarts in NYC, but quality is usually pretty good. Would come here if i was desiring a quick snack or specialty grocery items, but Chinatown is better in terms of prices.

Yelp
Great staff. Organized as hell. Security guard. Yummy pastries & snacks. Meats so cutely packaged Everything about store is adorable

Yelp
This review is on the specific TEA only.Do NOT buy Twinings Earl Grey - $5.50 This tea has absolutely no Earl Grey aroma ! I opened the bag and the texture of this tea is horrible. It kind of dust, bad quality no flavor ,no smell at all ! I've seen tea like this in India, when they were cleaning the tea wagon, it was garbage. It is a waste of money ! I think I will avoid buying Any Tea there as I don't trust this shop anymore.
google avatar

Kellee L.

Yelp
Wow this place!!! The price is so ridiculous, are they crazy? And ppl most of them who are students and go spend all extremely overcharged items? Place seems nice but hell no for the price. I'm Asian and I say "you're out of your mind to charge this much" bought one package of red bean steam bun... ugh for $8 shouldn't cost more than $4, never coming back here. Can't believe it's always crowded... seriously, what is wrong with you guys shopping here?!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Easier Hmart access for us that live downtown and don't want to train uptown....they have the staples, what more can you ask for
google avatar

Laureen Y.

Yelp
First time going to this location but have been to hmart. I got onigiris because i was craving it. They had a lot of prepared meals and I will definitely try more of it once I come back. They have hand sanitizer when you enter and they are very strict that you use it before entering. It looked small outside and inside but have a lot of items inside.
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Looking for 5 or 10 types of natto? We got you! 10 kinds of kimchi? Check. Galangal instead of run-of-the-mill ginger, also check. From mint, to lime leaves, taro to gobo, this place has everything. Now it's not the cheapest in the world, but if you don't have time to get out to flushing, stop in here, and fill up on all your fav asian grocery needs. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
New H-Mart is clean, organized, bright and colorful! Staff was courteous and selection was great! Sunrise market down the street has some serious competition now! Pricing is not amazing for a korean market, but for manhanttan market, its great!

Yelp
I like this HMart in the city and come almost every month to twice a month. It feels cleaner and has more space compare to the one in Ktown. This Hmart also sells fried chicken which is really good for the price you pay. I always come to get the side dishes from Jinger. The price is not cheap overall but they carry good quality food and there are ample selection of frozen and dry goods.
google avatar

Vera L.

Yelp
I actually like this Hmart way better than the one in Ktown. Super excited that this one opened up downtown. It is much smaller and condensed, but it has everything that I need. Also, it seems cleaner. And it has better hot-food options. It isn't the best in terms of social distancing - the aisles themselves are just tiny. But if you come during off-hours, it's totally doable, and it's not even that crowded on the later hours on a weekday. The produce is always fresh, I've yet to find anything low or out of stock. Again, I'm not going for prepping a full on korean-meal from scratch. Many of the items are actually kits-based now which I can easily pick up. One thing that has been consistent is a super fast check-out. I LOVE a good and fast check-out. This one is definitely comparable to the one up in Ktown. Mind you, I am comparing this in an Hmart to Hmart comparison. If I were to compare it to a bodega, I would definitely prefer it more but mostly because it gravitates towards the cuisine I like and enjoy. If I were to compare it though to the ones back home in Atlanta, this one doesn't even touch the seafood and meat department. I want to rate it for what it is, with NYC sized proportions and limitations. If there's anything I wish, it was that it did have more of a meat and seafood section. That though, is a whole other upkeep that management would have to take on, and I'm not sure if they even have the space for it. I'd still go here and still do whenever I'm walking over this far on the lower east side of Manhattan!

Yelp
When I heard H Mart was opening right outside my workplace and soon, I was so excited and happy. Hearing it opened over the weekend made Monday an extra special day to come in to. Since it is still freshly opened, they still appear to be in the process of tidying up and getting things in place, but what they do have is a beautiful sight to see. They appear to have very much everything you could need for Korean groceries, and the fact that I can access this without having to travel out of my way is so exciting (finding a place with lots of Korean groceries near me was something I missed a lot). Everything looks so nice and clean, and it remains to be seen how much it stays that way, but now I finally understand why people get excited for grand openings of stores. They have walls absolutely stacked with different varieties of Korean ramen, aisles stuffed to the brim with snacks and chips, freezers full of dumplings, ice cream, and Korean pancakes, a shelf wallpapered with curry mixes, all the rice and chili paste you could ever need, produce with some of the brightest and most buff tomatoes, a shrine of the ever delicious banana flavored milk, and so much more. There is also a section in the back where they are opening a Korean chicken restaurant, and they also have ready to eat food, including kimbap and spicy rice cakes. I normally fast throughout the day until I get home, but if this food is as good as I hope, I may end up breaking it. Note that while I am emphasizing Korean products, they do also have their fair share of Japanese and Chinese products, but the emphasis here is definitely on Korean. I do have a few minor gripes. The first is I was not able to locate any soondae (Korean blood sausage). I don't know if this will appear in the future or if I missed it (very possible, there was so much to see), but that would definitely be the fast breaker for me. The second is when I checked out, they only gave me half of my receipt. But to their credit, I think they were just as excited about the opening as I was, and I will forgive them if they stay open and continue to provide their wide array of lovely items. If you are near the area and are considering checking it out, I would definitely recommend you do so! It was surprisingly empty when I went in at around 1:25 PM, but this may be due to the fact it was raining, and perhaps the target demographic were in class. Unlike other stores you may have been in, it is spacious enough that crowding and tight squeezes will be less of an issue. UPDATE: I returned the following day to look around more carefully, and found they do have soondae, but only in the freezer! Still hoping they start offering ready to eat ones.

Yelp
I came in here looking for Thai chili pastes. I looked for a few minutes. I couldn't find it. I asked a cashier. She told me which aisle then directed me to it. I looked and it was more of Indian curry sauces and a few pouches of Thai curry already with vegetables. Not what I wanted. Then I saw an employee putting stuff on shelves and I asked him. It was just inside the aisle of where the other curry stuff I mentioned was. They weren't in cans but in glass jars. I got Thai Select brand green curry paste and red curry paste ($4.99 each). I didn't want that brand in particular but I didn't feel like leaving empty handed. I went back to the cashier after thanking the shelving employee. The cashier was happy I got what I needed. Very inexpensive too. For those interested they do sell some meals to go all packed and ready to go.

Yelp
This H Mart is my favorite one among all the locations. I don't know why each time I came here, I felt so proud of being an Asian, eating well and being happy. Maybe it's because of the good vibes here - always so neat, so clean, and full of energies with a bakery on-spot and a mini café. My favorite things here are the pre-marinated meat or pre-arranged casseroles. They are very easy to be cooked at home and taste like what you will order at an Asian restaurant. I also like the wide variety of Asian snacks here, not only from Korea, but also from Japan, China and other Asian countries. The fresh pastries here are also very delicate and tasty, just like those from Paris Baguette, which is actually Korean!

Yelp
My brothers & I came here On mother day Sunday.. We come here often.. For me I don't come here Often.. Once u walk about inside the store U need to clean your pushing Cart? Once u get inside the store U used hand sanitizer Clean your hands Staff give u gloves to wear Must have face mask on At all times. Their items pretty expensive Depends what u buy? Here are few photos I took.. Due to covid 19 Pay cashier Is long waiting.. Parking lot have parking Space..

Yelp
It's pretty expensive. One sleeve of Yakut is about 5 but you can get it for cheaper down the block at teso for about 3. Decent variety of things but I was pretty deterred by the prices. Exactly like how my mom always complains that she doesn't like shopping for things at Asian stores here when she can get it shipped from home for cheaper.

Yelp
Great grocery store to get your Asian groceries you normally won't find at your local Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I do find the Koreatown location a lot better in terms of fresh seafood selection as this location has a super limited selection. Otherwise, they have a expansive selection of items, including precooked packaged meals, which comes in handy when you're on the go.
google avatar

Esther Z.

Yelp
I bought Yakult from the market it tasted bad. I checked the expiration date which is still good. I bet they did not storage it for the right temperature which is refrigerated all the time. That's why it tastes bad and had alcohol taste in it. So be careful to buy their product. Not all of them are fresh and good. I once bought a box of kiwis and went back home. They were all bad. End up I had to compost them all. For their price point, they should provide good product, at least not bad. I understand that nowadays it's tough. I appreciate the store and the staff. But if the products are bad. They should not exist on the shelves. They are lying to the customers. And these day, we won't be able to take the items to do the refund easily. Watch out!

Yelp
Nice sparkling and shiny new H Mart with a lot of different types of Asian goods inckuding Thai, Chinese, Japanese and of course tons and tons of Korean stuff. Found a bunch of different options for Japanese Fashion, More and Soy Sauce. There are noodles of all kinds and even Wagyu. There is a small area of cooked bowls, even bibimbap, Japanese sushi, of course Kimbap and even fresh bread. They also have many frozen goods including pre-marinated bulgogi. While I was there staff was constantly restocking. Shelves always looked full. Very cool spot to have the supermarket too, right there in little Japan!

Yelp
Found 2 worms inside cod fish container there are probably more inside the fish.. disgusting.

Jingchun H.

Yelp
I came here for ramen. The selection was large, however it was more expensive than I expected. A family pack of Shin ramen (NOT Black) was 7.99. The really expensive grocery store near where I live is 7.59. I also bought a large bottle of less sodium soy sauce that I do not find in usual grocery stores. The store is very organized. Ps. I went there on 2/15. Prices might change

H Mart's. Got it going on. An astonishing number of products in each store. They give a first impression of chaos, but everything is well-ordered, it's just always crowded and high energy. If you can flag down a staffer they can help you find whatever you need, and if you need someone to explain the differences between a dozen different tofus, they can do that, too. Lots of hard-to-find products, but also basic groceries, and prices are reasonable. I recommend getting one thing you don't know anything about on each visit - it's a low-investment way to find your new favorite food!

Yelp
Authentic, busy, fresh food. At times one may have to take time to find what they are looking for but always a great journey. Never disappoints!

Yelp
It seems kind of ridiculous to write a 5 star review of a grocery store, but this is the best H-Mart I've been to hands down. This is coming from someone who has been to a few across New Jersey, New York, and Los Angeles so I'd like to say I know what I'm talking about as far as H-Marts go. This one is well organized, clean, and well stocked with a wide variety of snacks, meats, prepared foods, ramen of course, and fresh fruits and veggies. I found some awesome items here that I haven't been able to find at other locations like Ruby Chocolate Kit Kate topped with dried fruits and nuts, as well as multiple different varieties of shrimp chips. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
Cool store with interesting but pricey items. Fun to walk through but I wouldn't recommend the hot food that is on display. I got the pork katsu but it was quite tough and each piece was totally dried out at the end. Last piece was the worst. I attached the photo. Seems like the food doesn't turn often so it had been sitting out under the heat lamp for too long.

Yelp
I'm sure the food is great here. Difference in opinion with the security guard that didn't allow me to roll my fold up bike around the store just so that I can pick up fried chicken. My bike folds up and can trolly around with a footprint as small as a shopping cart. On the plus side it's good that he follows his job, but just NOT open to my justification to why I would not get in the way of other patrons. Bad news I'll never support the business because of this bad customer experience. But the store is doing just fine without my business. One bad security guard equals one bad review. But sure it doesn't mean much to the store owners.

Yelp
Love it! Much better crowd compared to the one in Herald sq. Fresh and everything perfectly displayed ready to be picked up!
