7 Best Charleston Sushi Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"Kyoto-trained chef Yuichiro “Junior” Takebata runs the sushi side of this Japanese steakhouse in West Ashley. He specializes in nigiri and sashimi, but Hachiya also offers an extensive signature roll menu as well. Takebata sources most of the fish he uses in his sushi bar from purveyors who order directly from Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo." - Erin Perkins

Looking for family-friendly dinner spots to celebrate a special occasion? First up on our fun dinner ideas list is @hachiyakyoto_chs – Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar 🍣🔥. On the hibachi side, our amazing server Abby kept everything flowing while Chef Danny had us laughing nonstop and cooking up the most delicious feast. Dinner AND a show, all in one! Over on the sushi side, you’ll find fresh fish flown in from Japan every Friday, plus a full bar for the adults. Hachiya Kyoto is lively, kid-friendly, and perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any celebration you want to make unforgettable!

Date night was nice. We started off with some Sake from the bar and soon thereafter went to a table. Unfortunately our sushi was brought after the food was done. Another person at the table had ordered sushi as her main meal and it came before ours. When paying for lobster anything it should arrive when its supposed to...maybe the server forgot... Good night regardless.

One of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever been! The ramen and sweet tea were both so flavorful and the service was excellent! I also love their green tea ice cream, sushi, and some appetizers. Everything was delicious! The restaurant looked so elegant and quiet with a lot of privacy, perfect for large groups for birthday, a date, or any celebration! A reservation is definitely encouraged (for hibachi) though we just walked in because we only wanted ramen- definitely no regrets! This hidden gem is a must try in Charleston and I can't recommend it enough!

Great food and the chef was fun and cooked great food! We celebrated my husband's birthday with their birthday package and it did not disappoint!

Google
I’ve never been this disappointed by a restaurant in Charleston. The chef did not speak to us and seemed angry and pissed to be there. There was literally zero interaction with the table which is awkward considering it’s hibachi and that is part of the experience. More importantly than Mother’s Day, it is my father-in-law’s 84 birthday today. I was told there were 800 reservations today so there would be no birthday celebrations. The rice was burnt and disgusting. On the bright side the chicken was good. The medium filet tasted like overcooked burnt char. This is my first ever negative post. I avoid negative posts because there are too many negative people in the world so I normally only post when I’m impressed. Today I made an exception. Do not waste your time or money on this wretched place unless you love burnt aftertaste and terrible service. My father -in-law served in the military until his retirement, he deserved a better meal on his 84th Birthday. The table beside us looked like their chef cared and the food was not burnt as hell.

Google
Unmatched atmosphere, service, and attentiveness! We had an amazing meal tonight with our party of 7, which included 4 young children. Every employee went out of their way to ensure the kids had a great time. They noticed one of the young kids was a little fussy and went out of the way to make sure she felt special and entertained. We were blown away with the service!

Google
The sushi bar at Hachiya is like a completely separate restaurant. The service is fantastic. The quality of the sushi is outstanding. And the space is lovely. The whitefish and salmon sashimi are so tender and melt in your mouth. The tuna and yellowtail sashimi have a clean flavor. Don’t miss out on this place. Order the shrimp tempura and hamachi kama (yellowtail jaw). You can order hibachi in the sushi bar, too.

Yelp
The waitress was awesome! Very attentive to our needs!!! The chef was fantastic and entertained us completely!!! The food was superb!!! We had a terrific time!

Yelp
We decided to try this place after seeing it on the way to Costco. It had the highest rating for hibachi restaurants in the area, and we were wanting to celebrate my new job so we went for it. It was highly recommended to make a reservation, so we did. We also went when they had the happy hour specials (tuesday-sunday between 4-5pm). It was still pretty busy for a Sunday afternokn. Inside the decor is really magical. The ceiling has a night sky, there is a water fountain in the front. Really pretty and relaxing ambiance. We got seated shortly upon arrival. it was the 2 of us and they sat us with 4 people so we had plenty of room. The server was quick and friendly. I got the hibachi filet with extra filet medium. My fiance got the ny strip with shrimp combo. We got a TON of rice, more than we could eat. Also fyi they do not add egg to the rice (honestly was the only disappointing thing. I love egg in my fried rice). But it was still delicious. The miso was veey flavorful and hearty. We also got the gyoza dumplings with pork and veg. I don't like pork and they still tasted really good. I do wish I got less rice and more veg. But the steak was cooked perfecf, so juicy and tender. I had enough for 2 meals leftover and plan to eat it for the next 2 days. You should definately come for a birthday or celebration here. Lots of fun vibes, and delicious food. We will be back!

Yelp
Classic hibachi Japanese Steakhouse with lots of seating. It's obviously popular so, make a reservation. We were seated promptly in this clean and beautiful restaurant. As with most places like this, hibachi is served with soup, and salad. Most places (we're fans of this food and eat at the one near our house out of state) have stopped serving the shrimp appetizer, so it was nice to see it here. Also they offer ranch or ginger dressing on the salad - nice for those who aren't a fan of ginger. The clear soup was excellent, not salty as you sometimes run into in other steakhouses. Hubby and I always have the filet & shrimp, the kid gets steak and chicken. The steaks were beautiful and the shrimp were huge and sweet. Nice! They round out your meal with sherbet. We loved that! Also a nice touch was them packing all the extra sauces you wanted to take home with your leftovers. The staff was super friendly and our chef was one of the more entertaining than we have seen in quite a while. We will definitely be back when in the area again - and we will be since the kid just started college in Charleston!

Yelp
Hachiya Japanese steakhouse and sushi are always busy. We made reservation for my oldest birthday dinner and we still had a bit waiting time even with reservation. Our server was really busy that night but really tried her best to checked on us. The atmosphere was busy, loud, and the hibachi chef was pretty entertaining. If you want romantic quiet dinner then this is not it. We normally come for birthday and hibachi dinner came with miso soup, salad, and sorbet ice cream as the appetizer. They charged $5 if you want them to come and sing happy birthday with balloons and cupcake to blow your candle. At the end of the birthday dinner they will take your picture to commemorate the birthday festivity. We had their sushi too and they were pretty good. I just found out that they have early bird special dinner from Tuesday-Sunday from 4-5pm for cheaper price ( I post the menu below) and they also serve ramen. Also, shout out to the manager that came and helped bag our left over! He jumped in and helped knowing how busy our server was! This is worth mentioning cos I know good manager/ management creates better work environment!

Yelp
We enjoyed the sake and sushi bar! I came to eat here on Sunday with my husband, we are not from charleston but saw the reviews and decided to try it out. Both servers there were so kind and gave us great recommendations, I really enjoyed how they both were so attentive to us and gave us different sauces to try out. The place is very clean and looks like your under the stars, a very memorable experience

Yelp
When it comes to a fun family restaurant and there is a big milestone to celebrate, we love going to Hachiya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar.  My oldest son turned 17 and this is where he wanted to celebrate. Make sure you reserve a table in advance as they get busy right after work time. We always start with a sushi roll, I ordered the spicy tuna roll, and what they sent looked like something different but I ate it anyway.  If I'm eating Habachi, I am going all in; I made sure to order the Kyoto Dinner, which comes with 5oz Filet Mignon, Shrimp, and Teriyaki Chicken.  My wife enjoyed sushi and ordered from the kid's menu because she does not eat a lot, she had plenty of food.  I love that they help make a birthday celebration fun, they came with the drums, made my son do the chicken dance, and also took a family picture of all of us - all for only $5 extra.  This is your spot if you're looking for a good hibachi restaurant in Charleston!

Yelp
We split the shrimp dinner they brought us double salad and soup rice and enough shrimp to fill both of us. Service was excellent and food the same. All servers and sushi chefs were amazing. You must try this place.

Yelp
This is your Classical Japanese-American restaurant that parties go to see the show and have your food prepared right in front of you. Is it the best food I've ever had? No, but it certainly isn't the worst. I think people come here with the expectation of being entertained more so than anything. The chef flipping the shrimp into his/her hat, making silly jokes and who could forget the flaming tower of onion. Hint: This place gets packed so if you don't want to wait, either come at 4 when they open or make reservations. Also, meals aren't cheap, so be prepared to pay at least $30 a person. Our party started off with an appetizer of fried gyoza. This was great! We then proceeded on to have the traditional hibachi meals. We chose chicken and shrimp. The meal starts with soup - I think it used to be miso soup, but now it's a salty onion broth. Tasty. It was then quickly followed by a regular garden salad. All iceberg lettuce with one slice of cucumber on it. Rushed once again - here comes the chef. He starts preparing his meal while you're still trying to scarf down your first two plates. The shrimp starter, vegetables, rice, and the chicken and shrimp were great. What wouldn't taste good cooked in pounds of butter? Be prepared to be completely overwhelmed with fried rice. I've honestly never seen anyone able to eat all that rice. I felt a little rushed, but I do tend to enjoy my food, not eating it as quickly as it comes out. Overall it's a nice meal for a nice night out away from the norm with a busy scene.

Yelp
I used to work at Kyoto's little over 30 years ago. Customers use to tell me best hibachi they've ever been too. I now live in Atlanta and I see now what they meant. Hachiya gives you 3 dipping sauces and doesn't charge for fried rice. Ones here in Atlanta serve white rice unless you pay extra for fried and only 2 sauces to dip. Atmosphere and food is hands down the best around.

Yelp
Well, it was 42 minutes after our 7 PM reservation, we were seated, another 12 minutes for our combo drink and meal orders for the six (6) of us. Thankfully the chef appeared fairly quickly and served up the food as ordered by all of us. Our waitress apparently was serving some of the many other tables in the beginning but gave us the proper attention later on. It was toward the end of our meal time when a gentleman who I assume was a manager came by and apologized for the delay "due to our backlog." IMHO, it was a scheduling nightmare and might be a bit of overbooking. Perhaps I am mistaken but it seems like this type of Japanese restaurants are the easiest to ascertain the amount of time that people will be at the table and eating. Thus the scheduling of reservations should be much more on time. Certainly keeping people for 42 minutes sitting around doing nothing is not productive and is not pleasant for the customer. At least they did not say that we could white in the bar although there were people doing that. Despite the food which I had (which was their specialty dinner of steak, shrimp, and chicken) being fairly good, I still am rating at three stars due to the horrible wait time past the time of our reservation. Not sure if I would return as there is a good Japanese style restaurant in the Northbridge area, with seating and service time being astronomically better.

Yelp
Great and welcome staff, and food is always fantastic! No complaints. We especially like the atmosphere. Cool decor and illuminated ceiling

Ana C.

Yelp
It was very entertaining and the restaurant was clean. We were 10 minute late and because of that we had to wait almost an hour...!! Not ok I have mental health issues and this gave me bad anxiety. It was not our fault we were late. But the food was very good and large portions and clean place so I give 4 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
So much fun, and so much food. Great atmosphere! I would suggest making reservations in the evenings. We had a party of 4 and had to wait an hour walking in. You should try the green tea, it is amazing

Yelp
This place has really transformed since changing from Miyabi. Great Hibachi and friendly staff! #hachiyachs #buzzybooth

Yelp
The food is good. They were very attentive and made sure to clear our soup and salad quickly. I love walking into see the twilight blue ceiling and the giant water feature. The women's restroom was clean and smelled great. They do not put on the typical show at this location. You get maybe 2 tricks, and that is all. I was very disappointed about that. I am used to these being dinner and a show with an interactive chef that keeps you entertained the whole time. I noticed most of the chefs rarely interacted with their tables. Come hungry and expect to bring some home!

Yelp
Such Amazing food, service, and such a fun atmosphere!! TJ was a fantastic chef and had us laughing the entire time. They have a fun Photo Booth for free in the lobby which makes the experience!!
google avatar

Yelp
Interesting ambiance, typically expect "longest" waits to get in, dining us an experience not to be missed, table chefs are lots of fun. The you'd us really hour starting with the soup or salad, TONS of rice and whatever choice you want between shrimp, chicken or steak. It's all VERY GOOD, fun and a great meal. Enjoy!

Yelp
I came here because one of my friends told me to try it. It has been raining lately and all I wanna eat is ramen. Please note that the place has 2 spots: Sushi Bar and Hibachi. If you come in and want to eat ramen, it is best to sit the sushi bar section although you can also order hibachi from there. I'll start with the appetizer which is the gyoza. I don't have high expectations since I've lived in asia and tried alot of gyoza in my life but what they have is really good. It taste so light and fresh and perfect to start the meal with. I ordered the original ramen (which is the most popular as per the waitress) , karaage and california roll which comes on a Ramen Set. The ramen is so flavorful and hearty. The broth is so flavorful and I love how you can customize some stuff on your ramen like how firm or soft you want the noodles, etc. I just hope that they give you more noodles as it is sooo goood. The meat that comes on it is also super tender. Ill go back here just for the ramen but then the sushi rolls and the karaage is super great as well. Karaage is crispy and tender inside. The sauce topping compliments the flavor of the chicken. The sushi rolls are true to the flavor using fresh ingredients. I don't see any browning on my avocado lol. I will really come back to try other items on the menu. Service is also nice. They gave my toddler a free sorbet after our food and we are asked multiple times through out if we need something and if everything is fine. Waters and drinks refilled without asking. LOVE IT!

Yelp
There is never a time at Hachiya we don't have a good time and enjoy every single bite! #hachiyachs #buzzybooth

Yelp
We ate there last week. This is a fun place to eat. Overall service was very good. cooking the food on the hibachi in front of you was both a treat and a fun performance. we thought the food was expensIve for the quality but you are also paying for the table side entertainment. The room is beautiful and that adds another positive to the experience. Unfortunately the food is only mediocre. You coul get better food elsewhere for the same price. You are paying for the fun evening of table side entertainment.

Yelp
To be honest and fair... Stacy the bartender/waitress was Great. I ordered a shrimp tempura and spicy tuna roll.... Its was the smallest rolls I've ever had. I did also get the spring roll... thank god because I was left still hungry.. The food was ok but not for the price..

Deann M.

Yelp
Great as always. The whole gang knows us and always takes exceptionally good care of us.

Yelp
Craving hibachi and some fun, we made a 7 person reservation at Hachiya. We were seated promptly but had some time to play with the selfie station by the entrance which was a lot of fun. We wanted to do sake bombs but they are not an item on the menu so we had to make our own with a can of beer and a bottle of sake separately. Our server was great and brought everything we needed to make them and it was a lot for fun. Our chef was friendly and made a wonderful steak and shrimp meal. The fried rice was a bit much In portion and had too much soy sauce and no egg of veggies , which pretty much meant lots of food waste at the end of the day. It is a fun time!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is definitely worth trying. It was a different name before but even with the name change the food is delicious! As long as you have a good chef serving you, you are bound to have a delightful time. Good laughs, good food, and good people. Don't get discourage from the wait Time because it's really worth it!

Hope S.

Yelp
Food was great!!!!! Made some new friends!!!! The couple at the table with us were repeat customers and they loved it!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Place is not air conditioned well on Friday or Saturday night. AC can't keep up with the tables. Service is rushed, you'll get your soup and salad while they're putting rice on your plate. Hibachi menu is not laid out like others. There's no standalone salmon option? The menu just lists "fish" and you have to order it with another protein. When we asked what it was, we were told it was swai which is Vietnamese farm-raised bottom feeder. It's worse than tilapia. The standard is salmon. Fried rice was void of aromatics. Have eaten at several hibachi places in the area and sadly they are all mediocre or worse
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Was in town with friends and came here. It was delicious. Definitely a place to come to when you are in the area. The staff was also excellent. Come hungry they give you a lot.

Yelp
Great Japanese hibachi and sushi! I had not been here for years and decided it would be fun for my birthday. We had shrimp tempura and a spicy tuna roll to start. Both delicious! For dinner, I had Filet and lobster while my husband opted for ribeye and shrimp. Our chef was young and a bit shy, but he was still fun and his food was absolutely perfect. They will sing and play a drum for your birthday, as we saw happen at maybe 8 other tables. I didn't want that, so I'm glad my husband didn't let then know we were celebrating. But it's a lot of fun if that's your thing. Great food and service. I definitely recommend!

Yelp
We went to Hachiya to celebrate my brother's birthday. There were 10 people in our party, which is a whole table. Our reservation was at 6:30 but we hit traffic and called to ask for our reservation to be pushed. They were very accommodating. When we got there we waited with drinks until a table became available. The whole hostess staff was great. Once sitting down our 5 star experience really started. Our server was attentive and our chef was awesome making witty jokes and sharing conversation. The food was good, but it was really the service that made the experience. Pro Tip: Pay for the birthday package! They brought out about 8 of their employees with drums and other percussions to sing happy birthday. We also got a printed picture, sorbet, and a cupcake for the birthday boy!

Yelp
This was my first time dining at Hachiya since it was rebranded from Miyabis but it was just as good as I remember. It really is THE BEST hibachi place in the Lowcountry. My sister and I came in on a Sunday night and although the parking lot was pretty full we had no problem finding parking. Upon walking in we were greeted by a hostess and despite not having a reservation we were able to be seated after waiting for only a few minutes. Our server was friendly and our table-side chef fun and a pro at whipping up everyone's dishes while still being personable and entertaining. For my meal I went with the filet and teriyaki chicken dinner combo. (FYI you can get this on special if you arrive at the restaurant between 5-7pm). Everything was SO DELICIOUS. The quality of the food being served here is leagues above the rest of the hibachi spots in the Lowcountry area. I had honestly forgotten just how good this place was until I took my first bite. Hands down - you won't leave here hungry or disappointed.

Yelp
Excellent service, perfect ambiance for a graduation dinner, reasonably priced and good food! Added bonus is the chef cooking the food in an entertaining fashion in front of you!

Yelp
So delicious and entertaining! The staff were so friendly! Cleanest and most beautiful bathroom in town! #hachiyachs #buzzybooth

Yelp
let's get the cons out of the way: - dirty menus - 4x the normal rice serving (smaller quantities of everything else that mattered) - 'hibachi chef's first day' - so much wasted yum yum sauce - weirdly all the sodas got flat so quick (under 30m) - loud. startling. noises. all the time - sushi quality was buffet level (mid) - some variations on doneness - octopus sashimi wasn't bad tho pros: - mid not bad - salad and soup got a thumbs up - "where did y'all originate from" (looks at 30 asians) - "north carolina" - scallops were very good, nice job - sorbet ice cream at the end (tastes like sunny d?) - staff member gave me a band-aid that was so sweet :) - the service was attentive and meaningful, our server and a dedicated few staff members checked up on us regularly - interior is beautiful, plates are beautiful - big heavy glass cups are very good - they did a great job feeding over 30+ people - secluded seating was lovely

Yelp
ramyeon in vegi broth tasted excellent. tuna salade was great with tasty dressing. Chicken was a bit salty but crispy. Ginger topping came out pretty dry on mine.. it was not supposed to be, I guess, when I looked at friend's. But overall, I want to come back to try other dishes for sure. Great to have such a restaurant' in WA.

Ashley D.

Yelp
Food & service are great! Quick & the orange Sherbet at the end was a nice touch! There are several hibachi places in the area, but this is by far the best one!
google avatar

Dr. Scott C.

Yelp
Hachiya never disappoints always on point!! This location in West Ashley is always busy!! We usually end up in the Sushi Bar area instead of the Hibachi Table area. Excellent food here at Hachiya! We usually start with Sushi and then move on to entrees. Today we had the TNT Roll, Yellowtail Roll, and Surf N Turf Roll all are excellent!! This night we decided all to do the Teriyaki Chicken and Rice Bowl with White Sauce!! OMG Soooo Goood!! Most times we get the Ramen Set which is also great. Hachiya deserves more Stars than I can give easy 5 Stars !!
google avatar

Shoujiki S.

Yelp
First, ramen is good. Four out of five times that have tried since they start serves it are pretty good. Would go back for it. Other than that, everything are just overpriced with the quality of ingredients used. Don't just raise price and give out more cheap ingredients to cover it. For hibachi, extra rice with same amount of protein does not make the adjustment. On Sushi side, frozen fishes in such restaurant should not be used. Quality over quantity should be the standard of sushi restaurant. After all, it's a place suppose serves raw/sashimi grade ingredients.
google avatar

Yelp
We went New Year's Eve . Our waiter Travis was fantastic and took very good care of us . Our chef was fun and good was delicious! Nice environment and look forward to returning

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful for families. Kids loved the food and the "show." Service and ambiance were both surprisingly good. Highly recommended!

Paul R.

Yelp
Love the sushi here. PricesAre getting out of hand. $10 for a Salmon skin hand roll is a bit much for the discarded part of the fish!! Still love the fresh #hachiyachs #buzzybooth

Chris H.

Yelp
So disappointed! We've been going here for YEARS because they have the best sushi and service; however, last night our party of four did not have that experience. The nirigi portions were smaller than usual and did not look or taste fresh. The rolls were mediocre at best- tasted like a grocery store experience- and prices went up - so a party of four was over 240 dollars with no alcohol- there are too many places in our foodie town to choose from- doubt I'll be back.
google avatar

Raquel C.

Yelp
Ambiance was very nice. Food, on the other hand. Lol Rice seemed to be overcooked before our cook received it. Then it went from overcooked to salty. The food just wasn't all that. And I wasn't comparing, but if you need a comparison, it doesn't taste anywhere close to Benihana not Kiku.

Yelp
I love Hachiya (formerly Miyabis)! This is a great place to go for quality hibachi, sushi and popular Japanese dishes. As of May 2021, here's what to know : This restaurant was originally known as Miyabis . When the owner passed away , some of his restaurants remained in the family and some went to a business partner . That is why the name has been changed to Hachiya. Spot the painting of the restaurant exterior with the name Miyabis painted across the front as you enter and exit the dining room . There are still several Miyabis around the Southeast owned by his family. The menu , food quality ,service and the WHITE SAUCE is exactly the same . Plenty of on site parking. Early bird specials daily from 4-5pm. Reservations accepted and definitely recommended if you are dining on a weekend. Gets very busy during prime time hours on the weekends. There is a separate bar/lounge area. There is a separate sushi bar area. While they don't offer them at the table , you can ask for chopsticks and even kids chopsticks as well . I like eating with these because it makes me eat slower and take my time . As of May 2021, there is a cute little selfie stand in the lobby . You can snap a selfie , add filters and even make a .gif ! All while waiting on your table . You can then text your creations to yourself. The bottom half of the photo reads Hachiya Steakhouse. PRO TIP: if you are like me and absolutely LOVE the appetizer shrimp that comes with your hibachi meal you can request them with your entree . So instead of ordering filet and shrimp (as written on the menu) - just ask for filet and appetizer shrimp and they will gladly accommodate. There is a difference in preparation and taste and I prefer the appetizer shrimp over the regular kind :) If you are ordering hibachi and eating low carb, just ask for no rice and they will give you extra veggies . If you love rice and don't like veggies , ask for extra rice and no veggies . These guys are here to please and they always do their best to accommodate dietary needs and requests. Don't forget to relax , have fun and clap for your hibachi chef! These guys work hard to not only accommodate special dietary requests, cook quality food but also all while attempting to entertain you ! So encourage them with a hand clap or a tip at the end of your meal :)

Yelp
We ordered the ramen bowls with medium broth and medium noodles(firmness)! Amazing!!!!! Their charsiu pork bun is very delicious and a guilty pleasure! Service is very good and the ambiance is beautiful for a girls night or date night!

So happy with my experience here! A group of us went here for a friend's birthday dinner and had a blast. We were running a little late due to traffic and they were super accommodating. Dinner was fantastic. Everything was very flavorful. The soup broth was amazing and the ginger dressing on the salad was creamy and delicious. I had the teriyaki chicken and loved every bite. The portions were huge, which was great. I took leftovers home and can't wait to dig into them today. The birthday boy even got a cupcake and a birthday song. If you're craving hibachi, I definitely suggest coming here!
