How Immigrants Have Transformed America’s Gas Stations - Eater

"Or a Haeorum Foods Korean BBQ sandwiched between a dry cleaner and a pet groomer in an Ocala, Florida, Sunoco gas station food mart." - Trisha Gopal

3 Best Day Trips from Orlando, Florida | Condé Nast Traveler

"Ocala seems like an unlikely destination for Korean food—especially Korean food that’s tucked away in the back of a gas station. But Haeorum isn’t your typical Korean joint. Sure, the menu has bibimbap, japchae, and dukbokki, but you’ll also find riffs on items like quesadillas, loaded with bulgogi and kimchi, or less-common Korean staples like naengmyeon, cold buckwheat noodles designed to cut through South Korea's—and Central Florida’s—oppressive heat and humidity." - Terry Ward, Laura Ratliff

Don’t let the outside deter you. I definitely was questioning where I landed myself. I was expecting to be let down because it’s hard to find great Korean food in Florida. The man at the front counter was very nice. I ordered bibimbap and japchae and let me tell you…my taste buds were blow out of the water. This is probably the best Korean food in central Florida. Definitely will be coming back to try more items on the menu.

This restaurant is located in a gas station and get plenty of business. You can order ahead by calling and it’s ready in about 15 minutes, even on lunch time. Everything I have tried has been amazing, including the egg rolls and fried dumplings. Everything is fresh and amazing every time Im here. There is high quality food with authentic ingredients and cooking methods. You won’t be disappointed. There are maybe 10 seats inside to sit and plenty of Korean and American drinks to pick from inside.

Google
This is no ordinary gas station. Haeorum is located inside and boasts fresh made, traditional Korean food and some mixed culinary comfort foods like tacos too. Not only was the food amazing and incredibly filling, but there were a few tables and chairs indoors to eat comfortably too. Can the Sunoco by me offer this too? 🤤

I am true korean . I moved here 8months ago . The owner of this restaurant is Korean and the food here is so authentic and real.

Google
Don't let the sketchy gas station vibes fool you! This place has some amazing food! Absolutely recommend. The restaurant is inside a gas station but they have a few tables and chairs inside for dining in. Service is very friendly and I was impressed with the flavorful, authentic dishes.

Google
Excellent Korean food in a nice location. The food was prepared fresh and can be carried out. We sat at the small but adequate sitting area and had a nice lunch. You Order from the board and it is very good. Friendly family staff and great service. Reasonable prices.

Google
A hidden gem! It’s a small mom-and-pop restaurant that is completely hidden! The food is absolutely delicious, very well priced, great customer service! I can’t say enough how good the food is! When pulling up to the restaurant/gas station I was alarmed but came In and ordered and the food it’s cooked on the Spot and again so delicious! I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
4/15/23 I can't say enough about this place, no matter what we have it's simply DELICIOUS and we're ALWAYS greeted with a smile. (Original post) Haeorum Korean BBQ rose above and beyond my expectations for GOOD happy food, it was an explosion of flavor, our dumplings were amazing, they pair perfectly with the dipping sauce, my shrimp wrap was full of flavor & very filling; my husband had the Hot Bob, he was equally satisfied. There is a very small area to sit and eat your delicious Korean food or you can have take out; either way Sophie welcomes you with a smile to brighten anyone's day.. I look forward to eating here again. 12/14/22 my 3rd visit and I'm still impressed!!

Yelp

Yelp
After a morning dedicated to unpacking boxes and getting various rooms situated in the house following completion of getting the interior of the house repainted, I suggested to my wife lunch at Haeorum Foods. She readily agreed and off we went. Situated in a gas station on a quiet residential street, we were hopeful this would be a find just like that Indian restaurant in OKC serving up the best Indian food from a gas station restaurant. We were the only diners when we walked in for a late lunch. We placed our orders for dine in, kimbap to share, bulgogi for my wife and spicy pork (hot bob) for me. We also had bottled Coke Zeros to wash it all down. Having been stationed in Korea before, my wife and I both love Korean food and think we know what good and authentic should taste. Haeorum's offerings were decent but not exceptional. We both loved the kimbap and if we were rating for kimbap alone, we would've given this place a much higher rating. The kimbap was freshly made and had good flavors. The bulgogi and spicy pork were just OK...none of the flavors we've come to expect. We also thought the banchan served with our meals lacked diversity...we've come to expect 4 to 6 different kinds of banchan when dining in a Korean restaurant. We really wanted to love this place but we both thought 4 stars is too high and 3 is low...but there's no option for half stars. This place is also quite a drive for us but we might be willing to come back for kimbap alone...and perhaps try their kimchi fried rice. Lunch for 2 came out to just over $40.

Yelp
Came here for Lunch during a recent visit to the area. This place intrigued us since the reviews said it was some of the best Korean food they had ever tasted and it was served from a gas station. We were intrigued and had to give it a shot. We got the marinated beef bulgogi wrap with a spring roll. Let me just say that I have actually been to Korea and this was absolutely the best Korean food I've ever had. Don't let the gas station throw you off. You will definitely want to stop by this place. We also ordered a chef special of kimchi fried rice. OMG this was delicious. We will certainly visit again next time we are passing through.

Yelp
After reading some other Yelp reviews, I decided that this needed to be our first place try during our extended weekend in Ocala. It is inside a convenience store, but don't let that deter you. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely fantastic!! I got the bulgogi wrap with an egg roll. And I had to also try their kimchi fried rice. WOW!! Both of these were delicious. The portions are large and I was thrilled to have leftovers for later. I cannot express enough that you need to try this place. I'm can't wait to come back when I'm in Ocala again.

Yelp
Haeorum still serves up great food in generous portions at a decent price. Today we had Chick Bob and Galbi Bob (beef short ribs). Both were served hot and steaming. Very tasty. The pickles on the side are not our cup of tea, otherwise we ate every morsel. You don't expect this type or quality of food at a gas station, but the folks at Haeorum have got it figured out. While we chose to dine in (very limited seating), the majority of food was for take out.

Yelp
Hole in the wall spot for authentic Korean food. Food was nice and fresh and flavorful

Yelp
Korean comfort food at its finest in Ocala. Everything was flavorful, authentic, and so tasty, reminds me of my favorite Korean home style comfort foods in California. The service was wonderful as well, as our order was taken promptly and questions answered. I appreciate family owned businesses, and am so grateful that I heard about this place through my church fam. I know that whenever there's a craving for bibimbap, I can rest assured knowing that there's a place where that'll be taken care of. The food is wonderful and I cleaned plate after taking it home. I appreciate how multi-use this location is - it's a grocery/convenience which doubles as a gas station and a restaurant! Talk about maximum usage of space and creativity. The pricing is very reasonable as well, I got the bibimbap (which consists a variety of vegetable along Korean bulgogi - which is marinated beef), that was about 14.99 and meanwhile hubby got the fusion Korean bbq beef quesadilla with spring rolls - which I think was around the same price - sorry, no picture proof. Anyway, we would high recommend and can't wait to try more of their menu the next time we visit.

Yelp
Wow, what a surprise! This place is inside a gas station. Our food was fresh and authentic. So much flavor, I went back up to order steamed dumplings before finishing my lunch. Servings are good, the prices are good and the food is fresh and fast. When I go back to Ocala, this is top of my list to eat at again. Flavor explosion!

Yelp
Traveled to Ocala for a dr visit and found this highly rated Korean hole on the wall. Don't let the gas station convenient store fool you , it's better than most Korean restaurants in Tampa. We ordered a variety of dishes to try out for lunch and take home. chicken curry 5/5 has a balanced amount of flavor but not too spicy just how I like it . Seafood pancake 5/5 was my favorite! I can't pinpoint the ingredients but this was the most authentic tasting pancake I've ever had. Packed with so much flavor and although the pancake is somewhat mushy in texture and not crispy , the flavor makes up for the texture. Fried mandu 5/5 was perfect and not oily . Beef bulgogi 4/5 looked and tasted as homemade as it can get . Least favorite was the kimbap 2/5 it just tasted bland with unseasoned vegetables. They ran out of the Galbi and the fried chicken, which is the two best sellers and what we were looking forward to savor .

Yelp
I have been here just a handful of times but they always serve me great food. Yes it is part of a gas station. Please don't turn up your nose. The food and service is so worth the stop. It's like most takeout restaurants when they say it will take ten minutes. But where this is different the food is Korean, serve hot, and the way you might like it. They only have seating for about eight people so you can eat right there. Most people take it home. Since I've drive 45 minutes to get there I will stay and eat. I have tried about five different items on the menu and have never been dissatisfied. The staff are very friendly and they'll help you whether you want alternates or increase/decrease seasoning. All you gotta do is get there and try. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I love this place. Yes it's inside of a gas station slash convenience store, however aren't some of the best places hidden? I believe it's the same owners since they opened and they've been here for multiple years now. It's always cooked to order and super fresh. I also checked in on Yelp and picked up a free Asian Salad it's a good add and I'll probably end up getting that every time. There's enough for 2-3 meals here. Thx!!!! Be back soon
google avatar

Yelp
This place is one of those unassuming spots that is located inside a convenience store. The food is way better than I expected and thanks to Jay P for finding this place. It's now a regular stop when we ride at SANTOS MTB Trails. Service is always great and friendly. A bit of wait sometimes cuz they can get quite busy from walk-in and call-in orders. Definitely worth the wait tho :) ***if you want a better review...check this one https://yelp.to/NCpbcpITlz

Yelp
Asian food is one of my top 3 cuisines and I love Korean food! Based off of the reviews and being named as one of the top 25 places to eat in the Gainesville area - I needed to check it out! When driving to this location, the directions will bring you to a Sunoco gas station. Don't be fooled as some of the best eateries are hidden gems or inside of a gas station. Inside of the gas station, they sell Asian products from beauty, food, and beverages. Haeorum Foods is definitely a small mom and pop business and it's great to see a local business thriving. I went around lunch time and there were a lot of people waiting and eating in the corner. The menu consist of some classic Korean dishes like japache, bibimbap, dukbokki, and more. I had a hard time picking what I wanted to eat as everything looked good. I went with the bibimbap with a side of kimchi. My wait time was not long but everything was cooked right there in front of you and you can tell it was fresh ingredients. Since I got this to go, it was very hard not to indulge before I arrived home. Once I got home, wow I'm so happy I waited. The bibimbap consisted of a bed of rice on the bottom layered with semi cooked veggies like broccoli, carrots, fresh cucumbers, bean sprouts, bulgogi, a fried egg, and a side of red chili paste sauce. (which I assumed was Gochujang sauce) The presentation even in the container was pretty. I wanted my first bite to be a bit of everything - the bulgogi was perfected cooked, tender, and marinated to perfection. The flavor of bulgogi was savory, salty, and sweet. The semi cooked veggies were a nice crunch and the rice was perfectly cooked and not gummy. The sauce was a perfect touch and binded all the flavors together. I had a side a of kimchi and it was not my favorite kimchi. It was a bit saltier than most kimchis that I usually eat. Instead of eating it alone, I did add it to my dish to cut down the salty taste which helped. I have to say I'm very happy with this Korean spot and surprised Ocala has such a great gem. I can't wait to come back to try out some other traditional Korean dishes. If you're in the Ocala area, definitely check them out!

Yelp
Food from a gas station shouldn't be this good. It could have you believing that gas station food is better than it actually is. This is my second time here because I just knew the first time had to be a fluke. I was wrong the food is just that good. I wasn't expecting to find Korean food that surpasses a lot of what I've had in Tampa and rivals what I had in Korea IN A OFF THE BEATEN PATH GAS STATION IN OCALA!! It's not even a main street y'all! The Ambiance is.....a gas station / convenience store, if your convenience store sells ginseng root drinks with the actual ginseng root in it. I think my friend freaked them out when she talked about how much I raved about their food and have tried to come every time I visit her. I was trying to act demure and sophisticated but my tastebuds were fangirling like they were the newest K-Pop sensation. Service was fast and efficient. No muss no fuss. You order they make it and you go on your way. I will definitely be back. I got a quarter of the menu. Picture included!

Yelp
We stopped here on a road trip for lunch due to the good reviews. It is a hole in the wall for sure inside a gas station with limited seating inside. Despite the restaurant being busy, our food still came out quickly and was delicious. The service was friendly too. Food is served in styrofoam containers with disposable plastic cutlery and disposable wooden chopsticks. My family of 5 each ordered something different, and we all enjoyed our meals. The price was reasonable too.
google avatar

Wil S.

Yelp
Overall, a pleasant surprise given the lack of Korean or even authentic Asian cuisine in the area. Unassuming establishment that delivers on taste and portions. It is primarily a takeaway joint that is part restaurant, gas station, and convenience store (Korean). I wished there were small banchan added to the order but realized they were separate from the entrées subsequently. Banchan (need to ask) is a separate item(s) for purchase. When in the area, stop by for some Korean and Korean fusion delights.

Yelp
I reviewed this place about 6 mths ago and was not that impressed. I was to,d to give it another try and I am glad I did. This time it had completely different people. I believe it is a family run business. You need to ignore the interior. The floors are in need of repair but looking closely it is very clean. We had the Chicken Bob which was good but it is the Spicy Pork Tacos that we keep bringing us back. They were just delicious. The perfect amount of spice, crunch from the slaw and chewiness of the soft taco. Yep! Good stuff.
google avatar

Leslie G.

Yelp
First time trying this place and I must say the food was delicious 10/10. At first I was like wait it's a gas station but go inside and it's a restaurant / some gas station and Korean foods on the shelf. It seems like it's family run business very friendly people. The food didn't take long to be cooked. I didn't get pictures of all our food but we all enjoyed it and will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the tastiest ramens I've ever had. Love the fusion concept w/ kimchii that gave it a good kick. Would highly recommend people try this spot when visiting Ocala!
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
This place has been on my wish list forever. On my way home from Orlando, I finally found the time to stop. It's an unassuming place with a few tables if you decide to eat there. I asked the young man to recommend a dish that would not be spicy. He suggested the bugulogi. It was well seasoned beef on rice with a side of cucumbers and broccoli. The portion size was good. The food was delicious. I think that if I had planned to eat there I would have chosen one of the dishes that included a fried egg. The guy was friendly and the food came out quickly.
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
The best Korean food in the area. I, personally, can't get enough of their kimchi fried rice.
google avatar

Abigail O.

Yelp
I've been coming here the past couple of months on my lunch break, and needless to say, as someone who already loves Korean food, this is definitely my favorite spot in the area. I've already gotten my coworkers hooked on Haeorum, and they all love it. If you're in the area, I highly suggest giving this place a try!

Ruby D.

Yelp
Honestly the food was extremely good I had the steak bento box 10/10 will definitely try again
google avatar

Ella P.

Yelp
Got bul bob (beef bulgogi dish) and kimbap (Korean maki, basically) to go yesterday. The food came out quickly (I was given a 10 to 15 wait time) but it was ready in about 8. Both were delicious. Prices are reasonable and they are nice people. The place is not fancy but don't let that stop you from enjoying their food.
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Remember 5 years ago when Haeorum was amazing? Well, it still is. Get your bulgogi, bibimbop, mandu, ttekboki fix here! Hot, and HOT, fresh and so tasty. Great place to pick up lunch or a snack. Spicy pork tacos never fail.
google avatar

Angel I.

Yelp
Have been to this place several times. Delicious food from a friendly family with great service. No frills location, but such fantastic Korean offerings that are authentic, delicious, and well portioned for the price. We live in a different city but always make sure this is one of our stops when spending a weekend in Ocala. Definitely recommend their kimchi fried rice...get it every time. But honestly, want to try everything on their menu!
google avatar

Liza T.

Yelp
Delicious lunch! Dukbokki was fiery but not too spicy, super crispy dumplings, yummy bulgogi tacos. Don't be deterred by the fact that it's in a gas station!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Incredible! Service was great, patient, helpful & quick. We got the kimbap, japche, Asian salad, & omurice. Japche was my favorite, so flavorful and well balanced. So so so good! Also lots of delicious snacks and goods for sale too
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
Food, service, everything is amazing! The perfect little hidden gem to go to and support!
google avatar

Audrey H.

Yelp
Studied abroad in South Korea for a month and am always trying to find some good authentic Korean food when I travel. Me and my boyfriend were a bit worried when the gps took us to a gas station but we gave it a shot anyways and thankful we did! Super great food!! And I highly suggest the pork!
google avatar

Mandy B.

Yelp
Food was amazing, authentic. Don't expect a fancy place, but expect delicious food. Will definitely get again.
google avatar

Sharrie C.

Yelp
This is a Gem of a family owned restaurant and grocery store inside an old gas station. Everyone was super nice and they answered my questions. I tried the Korean Curry and was pleasantly surprised at the flavor and amount of food I was given for the price I highly recommend this establishment. I plan to come back and try everything on the menu. I love Korean food and I'm so happy a friend d told me about it.
google avatar

Yelp
In 2009 I had the great fortune to serve in Korea with the Army. One of the most amazing aspects of this assignment was the food. On-post there were/are several "KATUSA" Snack-shops (Korean Augmentee to USA). Spicy Pork bulgogi, bibimbap, galbi, samgetang, and of course kimchi became staples of my everyday diet. This is an authentic Korean dining experience more similar to the establishments you'd find near Samgakji/Yongsan/Itaewon than any I've encountered in the US. My personal favorite is the Hot Bob and their kimchi. Seems like a family business of extremely nice folks, and it is always busy at lunch! If you know what you're looking for vs exploring Korean food for the first time...you will LOVE this place. If it's your first foray into this type of cuisine, bare your ignorance and ask questions so that you can truly enjoy a robust pallet of flavors like those traditionally present in Korean cuisine!

Connie T.

Yelp
Food was so good! Beef was tender and flavorful. Seasoned well. Portions are large and priced fair. It was a little out of our way but it was worth the time.
google avatar

Souad D.

Yelp
Ehh I wanted to love it but I thought it was average. Like many I stopped by due to the raving reviews but was unfortunately disappointed. My boyfriend said that his meal was a 4.5 and mine was a 2, so we averaged it to be a 3 star experience! The staff was dry friendly tho..would I go back? Probably not.
google avatar

Lucy G.

Yelp
From the outside, this place may not look like much, but as with many small restaurants, looks can be deceiving. We had an order of kimchi fried rice (to share) and 2 egg rolls. It was soooo good! The lady who took our order was super nice, professional, and helpful. We will definitely be returning to try more dishes!

Miranda P.

Yelp
My initial review was removed after about 6 months. I posted pictures of a Korean lady washing dishes, outside, with a hose. I guess they don't want anyone to know this dirty little secret. Food was ok Korean (and I'm married to a Korean man (20 years) , my in-laws are from Korea so I do know a little bit about the culture and food practices. That being said, I wonder about the cleanliness and preparation of the food after seeing that. And this is where my rating is coming from. They should have a proper sanitation station for cleaning their dishes, not out on the side of the building on the sidewalk.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and service is on point!, we ordered upon arrival- it was maybe 20 minutes wait- plenty of time to check out the items in store, snacks, ingredients ect... will always recommend!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Ironically, I said right before I ate this food that there wasn't really a reason for me to stop in Ocala...... And..... this is NOW it!! I read the reviews and was like ehhhhh this is a gas station convenience store, but how often do I find a place with a consistently PERFECT 5 stars. From the start, the service is excellent and welcoming. I ordered the #15. Galbi Bob - beef short rib and the #9 Korean Fried chicken wings - 4 pieces. This is THE BEST KOREAN food I've had in AGES. Like forever. I'm so serious about that... I scarfed this down in the car driving home. There's no tables it's just take out!!! It was heaven lol!!!! Don't hesitate going here. It's sooooo worth it!!! You can call and order over the phone and pick it up. My food took a while and I waited in the car. It wasn't bad at all. Promise!!! Take my word and just GO!!!
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
So good, one of Ocalas best!!! I hate Yelp and everything about it. The fact that they make you write so many words us definitely a deterrent from leaving reviews on here. Or the fact that they filter them, especially if your not paying them for advertising. This hole in the wall gas station restaurant kicks butt!!!! Awesome

Harold G.

Yelp
Authentic Korean Flavors in every bit! Excellent Service, Great conversation with the gentleman that took the order! The cook spoke to us on the way out! They are deserving of their #1 rating in Ocala! Small in seating area, but clean! area
google avatar

Tom O.

Yelp
Haeorum looks like it will be just gas station food, but no! It is excellent food. Honest to goodness, real Korean food.
google avatar

Reba D.

Yelp
They have a good variety of freshly made koren-style BBQ that is yummy and smells wonderful. The service was great (courteous, really wanted to satisfy customer needs). They are situated in a small, out-of-the way fuel stop/market place. Don't let that fool you, though. Inside is clean, and outdoors is kept clean. Nice place to eat. Watch your TIME, too. They are strict on their hours of business.

Ellen F.

Yelp
Little hidden gem. Tasty food and very good service. Don't let the exterior fool you. Go in!
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Haeorum is a Korean restaurant focused on Korean Bunsik food items which are street food, snacks and fastfood. For the ones i ordered, they were authentic and were as good as what I had during my recent trip to Seoul, Korea. I live in Gainesville and there are four Korean restaurants but this place in Ocala is the only one that can make good gimbap(Korean sushi) better than these four places. Also their teok bokki style is more like food stall on streets of Seoul while Seoul Pocha's teokbokki is more like bar style. Their chicken is Yangnyum chicken (Korean fried chicken sweet savory sauce) which are not only very good but also are different than Seoul Pocha's padak(Korean chicken with green onion).
google avatar

John P C.

Yelp
Gas station hide away to go restaurant. Delicious food at affordable price. Great for order and take home for the whole family. A must try !!
google avatar

Kendrick J.

Yelp
Great food! Friendly people. Don't let the outside fool you. Had almost everything off the menu to try and loved it all.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Who would have guessed that some of the best Korean food I would have in Florida would be in a gas station. Bulgogi quesadillas?! So delicious. The food took a little while but it was well worth the wait as you could tell it was all cooked fresh.

Miranda N.

Yelp
Delicious food and amazing service every time. I dream of the Japche and the short ribs. Best food in town hands down.
