Haibayô - Review - Uptown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Haibayo is an Asian-inspired cafe in Uptown serving Vietnamese coffee, specialty drinks like Thai iced tea with cream cheese, and a variety of teas. And for anyone looking for a snack, they also have some small bites like bánh mì croissants and cookies." - John Ringor

I happened to be around Argyle, so I stopped by this newly opened coffee shop to try it out. The moment I walked in, it felt like I was slowly stepping into a time machine, taking me back to a Vietnamese café from the 70s–80s. I was really impressed by how they told their story through all the little details. I ordered the orange coffee along with the banh mi croissant — they paired perfectly. I’ll definitely be coming back again.

The coffee shop beautifully pays homage to the first generation of Vietnamese immigrants in the Argyle area, staying true to its cultural roots through both its decor and curated drink menu. The owners shared that their mission is to preserve Vietnamese culture in their neighborhood, and it truly shows. From the traditional '70s and '80s decorations to the authentic drink offerings, everything feels thoughtfully crafted. My Cà phê sữa (Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk) was served with a phin (drip filter), delivering a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their drinks— a true hidden gem.

This new cafe is everything to me. Bright and vibrant inside, the cafe drinks match to a T. The orange (Orange Amber) and lemon (Mekong Citrus) drinks are light and citrusy, not a typical espresso drink you'd find at other coffee shops. BUT it is infinitely delicious and you NEED TO come here. The Bahn mi on a croissant was the show stopper. Buttery and spicy. In love. Can't wait to see what this space does. I love it. Good job folks!!

HAIBAYO is such a special space. Although rooted in the Vietnamese-American Chicago community, it was a space inclusive for all. Great drinks, beautiful decor, and the warmest service. It’s extra special to know that supporting this cafe supports an even greater cause as well. Hope to return in the spring!

Google
I really enjoyed this cafe. The staff were very kind and welcoming and I loved the decor. They even had some board games by our table. The coffee was also one of the best I've had in a while. Such a wonderful addition to the Argyle area! The cafe itself is not at the front of the building, so you have to walk back quite a way but there are a good amount of signs to guide you.

The decor and the drinks remind me so much of Vietnam. Both the cà phê sữa and cà phê muối were delicious: properly strong and not overly sweet. Finding a piece of home is quite a luxury so I am grateful very grateful for authentic spaces like Haibayô.

Went here for the first time on a Saturday morning at 9am. The coffee shop is in the back. They have signs directing you to it. It looked like there was a shared space with lots of seating from the front to the back. I did see parents with toddler kids. It was not crowded when I arrived but started filling in as we drank. The staff were very friendly, efficient and explained things well. I had the Vietnamese coffee with the salted cream. I like salt so it was really good. If you are not big on salt you should just stick with the regular Vietnamese coffee. I will be back to try the other drinks. They have hot and cold options for most of the drinks. They have WIFI and take credit cards.

Google
Hai Bayo is spacious airy and a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It really feels like a community space that you can pass through and see familiar faces through each season between coffees or delicious pastries. I always make sure to pass through to bring my friends because I am so proud that it's a part of the community.

Yelp
Loved the nostalgic design of this coffee shop. As a Chinese person, I genuinely had a little "wow" moment when walking through that smaller doorway into the order area - it felt familiar in the best way. The baristas were super friendly, and I especially liked the small board showing photos of their specialty drinks and each barista's personal favorite. I ordered the Mekong Citrus and a Chai Thai Tea with cheese cream on top. Both were excellent. The Thai tea is definitely a calorie bomb, but it's worth it - so good! I also enjoyed browsing the little Asian-themed plant shop next door, filled with books, candles, cups, and other small goodies. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
A really cool addition to the neighborhood. The place is bright and vibrant with plenty of seating and outlets. The coffee shop is all the way in the back and it looks like there is a small patio. The only downside is it opens at 8:00am, so if you have to go to the loop or log on by 8:30am then you might not be able to get a drink before hand. I went with the Cà Phê Sữa which was pretty tasty.

Yelp
I was so excited to see this space! It's so lively, great music, and plenty of vendors. In the back is where the Cafe is and plenty of seats for chilling with friends. I liked my Dirty Matcha Latte it was very strong, but I have to come back to try their Chai Thai Cream Cheese.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful cafe that truly celebrates Argyle's history and culture! I came here to work remotely for a day, and there was plenty of space and outlets available. The decor was stunning, and I loved how it recognizes the creation of Argyle and the history of Vietnamese immigrants who came to Chicago. The workers were very helpful in providing drink options. I loved my coffee drink - it was fresh and had a great coconut flavor. It's also connected to the charming plant shop Qideyas, so you really get it all with this spot. Will definitely be a new go-to spot for me!

Yelp
It has the vibe of an Asian coffeehouse in Amsterdam. It has coffee that tastes similar to, if not, Dark Matter. You walk in and there is a connection to the plant store on your left. You walk through the 1st room. You walk through the 2nd room. The 3rd room has the coffee bar, but you can sit in any room as well as the back patio. If you sit in the patio in winter, it is more like sitting inside in Amsterdam. The baristas are friendly and accommodating. I would give them 6 stars, but they are closed Mon. and Tues.
