The location is takeout only or delivery via DoorDash. We ordered the shrimp small dinner that came with 15 pieces of shrimp, fries and coleslaw. The shrimp were perfectly seasoned and lightly breaded. I gave 4 stars for the food because the french fries were very soft and did not appear to be fully cooked and the coleslaw was extra creamy for me. The service seem to be a little slow as it took a while to get our food with only three people waiting in line. It may have been better to order ahead. The atmosphere was conducive for waiting as soft music played. There were framed articles and pictures to review while waiting. I plan to visit their other location in the future. Otherwise, I would recommend this location if they fully cook the french fries.

Picked up a small blob bag and it was full of perfectly cooked shrimp 🍤 batter not too heavy and seasoned to perfection! The spaghetti was a pleasant surprise and has a great flavor! Customer service was great and they made you feel valued as a customer! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Been coming here for a while and they consist with the shrimps. They are good hands down. I got a small bomb bag (14 pieces) and they come out hot, crunchy, and the flavor on point. You get them with hot sauce and cocktail sauce to dip'em plus crackers just in case too. The place is easily one of the best shrimp in the city. 9.4.

THE TASTE of the shrimp was really good. They really season them & butterfly the shrimp also. I do not like walking in establishment, smelling weed, from behind the counter. They need to be more mindful of customers.

Excellent food, horrible customer service. I placed an order on New Year’s Day, out of towner, we pulled up to the restaurant to find out It was closed for the day, no big deal. We called back the next day to try to get a refund and they took our information down but they did not process the refund, call back a few days later and was told that there was no manager and that I would get a call back, that never happened. Call back again and finally talk to someone who was “the manager“ they started asking me 50 questions and giving me the runaround about the order then he says he needs four digits from the card to process the refund, I gave him the four digits from the card, he says it’s wrong, says there’s nothing he can do for me, I get upset, he gets rude, I told him I would dispute it with my bank if they don’t give me my money back, he told me “do what you need to do.” Used to stop here every time I came to town. Will not be back.

I wanted to give them 5 🌟 shrimp has a great texture not over breaded. No smell. Just a bit salty for my high blood pressure. Lower the season.

Haires Gulf Shrimp serves up the BEST fried shrimp in Chicago. They have the perfect batter to shrimp ratio in my opinion. The service is always pretty fast and the shrimp is always fresh and made to order. This is definitely not a sit down spot but, this is where you go when you're looking for a casual meal to take home with you.

I visited the Jefferson location on Tuesday December 31st 2024 for starters the shrimp are extremely small for the price I paid..I ordered 2 large bomb bags And an order of fries they only gave me a handful of fries for $4.50 it was only enough for my 9yr old daughter I'm extremely upset at the size I f the shrimp and the handful of fries I received.when I received my order the bag of shrimp were really small it seems like I got a small bag for the price of a large then the guy behind the counter didn't fill the bag of fries he stuffed the rest of the bag with napkins forks and hot sauce.this place is a big disappointment for the $51.00 I spent what a waist of money.Haires need to do better with the portion size of the shrimp and the bag of fries big disappointment!!I try to patronize the black businesses and they truly disappoint I'll continue supporting other black business that care about what they're giving customers not trying to rip you off and take your money.you lost me as a customer and I'm sure I'm not alone!!

So the comparisons to Lawrence Fisheries are, in my humble opinion, not accurate. The shrimp are not nearly as large here, and the batter is more traditional than at LF. However, the quantity of medium sized shrimp was generous. (At $33 for the Large Shrimp Dinner the portion should have been generous). Lawrence's is far superior--not to denigrate Hair's. The service was friendly but ordering on the phone was challenging; she talked way too fast and seemed very distracted. There was one really big negative--the French fries are clearly not fresh: They tasted very "soggy" and unevenly cooked. Some looked black like they were fried in days old oil, while others did not seem cooked long enough and were saturated with grease. The shrimp did not suffer the same fate. Finally, I much prefer this location to the previous venue on 81st and Vincennes, however there is no dine-in option now. All in all I rate Haire's Gulf Shrimp 3.5 Stars

Amazing take out only no dine in or drive thru. They specialize in shrimp only and you can get a side of fries or spaghetti. The shrimp are cooked beautifully. What makes them stand out is they are fresh, clean, perfect amount of breading, and made to order. The establishment is friendly and they are a well oiled machine. You can order a large bomb bag of shrimp or small bomb bag of shrimp. Lawrence fishery better watch out because this place knows what it's doing. I would highly recommend if you want to enjoy some fresh fried shrimp to check this place out. It is a hit! 5 out of 5 for me!

OMG, I am a FAN of Haire's Gulf Shrimp! This place has been around since the early '80s, and this informal counter serves up some Louisiana-inspired fried shrimp, in bags or as dinners. I ordered the Small Dinner, which comes with 14 fried shrimp (yes, I counted!), a side of coleslaw, and your choice of fries or spaghetti; I opted for the spaghetti. The shrimp was about medium-sized, and they had a nice crispy batter; it wasn't too thick, though, as you could still taste the fresh shrimp inside. You get both hot sauce (tasted like Texas Pete) and cocktail sauce (seemed like a house recipe (?), as it had kind of a mix of sweet & sour/mumbo thing going on). Honestly, I thought it was a little weird that spaghetti was being served as a side, but it seemed like it was a super popular dish that's usually not available and/or it's sold out quickly. However, the spaghetti? It was SO GOOD! It was made with ground turkey, which I thought was amazing, and it was more on the sweeter end - it literally tastes like Filipino spaghetti (aka, from Jollibee's), so I was a fan! The coleslaw was creamy and had a slight tang to it; it was a great complement to the meal! Both of the sides are super small, though, as it comes in a condiment-sized cup. Staff are very sweet and kind! There are about 3 'chairs' inside to wait for your order, but note that this is strictly a carry-out place. You place your order at the counter and they provide you a ticket with a number; once your order is ready, they'll call your number out and you pay then. You can also place your orders online or call ahead for a pickup. There is free parking in their lot; note that the entrance is one way. I've been told that Haire's is a "South Side institution", so I paid them a visit on a recent Thursday. An unattractive building with a no-frills decor, I walked in to the lights being off and almost thought they were closed, but left the door unlocked. They were open. Easy menu to digest, so I ordered a Small Shrimp Dinner. Shrimp were a good size, fried fresh to order. Fries were crinkle cut, but nothing special. Small forkful side of coleslaw (wished places offered larger sides of coleslaw here in Chicago). Mild sauce, hot sauce, and ketchup as well. Food was done pretty quickly. Glad I was able to try it, but not sure if I'd make a special trip for it again.

Fast good shrimp I'm so pleased they have a closer location to my home. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

This place is a hidden gem. The shrimp is light and flavorful . They do have a light breading the opposite of let's say goose island. However just as good if not better . Very clean and no iodine taste or fishy smell . Everytime I've had Haires the food was extremely fresh. The spaghetti is fire so don't do yourself a disservice by not getting it. They cook to order so it takes the time it takes but it's soo worth it your food will be piping hot.

Well I have got to give them credit. This little hole in the wall did the damn thing with these shrimp. I wish they would expand to fish but I'll take it for now. If you want some good shrimp this is the place to be. TikTok got it right for a change. After hearing two reviews about this place on TikTok I had to come cause I had just about given up on shrimp but this place really held up to its reputation. Great job

Delicious spaghetti served as a side? My mind was blown. And the shrimp!! Perfectly battered and seasoned well. This is a definite must try when you visit. It is carry out only, so it's best to call in your order and pick it up. The service was quick, and the staff member was nice and accommodating. Add this place to your list and thank me later.

The service is great & fast!! The Shrimp & coleslaw is amazing the only issue is the parking lot other than that it's a great place to buy your seafood from!! I come all the way from country club Hill just to get my shrimp love it hope they consider opening a Haire's in the southern suburbs...great job Haire's you get

9/16/2023---I was leaving a funeral nearby and was looking for a quick bite to eat. This place popped up and also happened to be bookmarked on my Yelp. I ordered a small shrimp dinner. Comes with crinkle cut fries and coleslaw, there were at least 10-12 nice sized shrimp. Fried fresh to order. Accompanied with saltines crackers, dipping sauces (mild and hot), and ketchup. Honestly, besides everything being fresh and hot, that's all I got. The shrimp weren't flavorful. The fries were good. Nice crisp bite with soft potato chew, not salty. As you know, all reviews are very subjective and relative. If you're in the area, try for yourself. As for me, nothing I'd make a point to revisit. Housekeeping items: private parking lot and street parking, spacious lobby area, not set-up for dining in.

I've been here multiple times & I have not been disappointed. I don't live near the place, but it is worth the 20 min drive to get the shrimp. Spaghetti is very good as well.

This review is for the new Jefferson west loop location. After seeing The Black Foodie giving them a rave review at the new location. Monday, Dec. 23 me and My sister drove from Wilmette to get a taste. We checked Google to make sure they were open and it was we didn't. We got there and there was a pad lock on the door and the place was closed and we got there are 2pm. It was very disappointing and frustrating to have driven so far to get a taste for nothing.

Never disappointed when I come to Haires Gulf Shrimp ! The BEST SHRIMP in a bag ! I just happened to be in the area and had a great taste for shrimp.... If ever in the area, I recommend you stop in and grab a bag...

Did Haire's said black owned. There are no blacks that I saw. That's ok but let's not think that's bigger since on south east, it's ok! Wings not crispy. Going back for shrimp only, let's hope

Let me start by saying I love black owned businesses! I've been living in the city my entire life and this my first time actually trying this place to my memory and it did not disappoint! Don't let my pictures fool you, those were taken in the middle of me eating and I knew then I had to leave a review! The spaghetti is tasty and the shrimp are really seasoned! The service is pretty quick and efficient, I liked it! The ambiance is pretty chill, I enjoyed seeing all the articles about Mr. Haire and even the memorial area they have set up for him it was really touching! I will surely be back to eat again!!

If you blink, you might miss this spot, and what a pity it would be for you. The shrimp is delicious. I've never been to a place where they battered the shrimp and you get more shrimp than batter. The ambience lacks but it's not a sit down establishment; get your food and go; light candles when you get home. I've always been welcomed with a smile so the service is good in my opinion.

I came for the shrimp and I also paid for the spaghetti.. l got home and the spaghetti was not in the bag... so I tasted the shrimp and they was good...so overall I guess I got poor service..

Very excited to share this review. I never knew this place existed until hubby and I went to the Taste of Chicago on July 10, 2022. Their food truck was there. The line was so long! We stood in line but the line didn't seem to move much so we left and enjoyed other parts of the Taste. We really wanted the shrimp because we both love shrimp so we went back to the truck. The line was still long but not as long as prior. We stood there wondering if we'll actually get to taste their shrimp. Then the business did something which was a great idea - they had employees come past the line with shrimp portions offering it to people who had CASH ONLY. That really saved us - we had cash and got our shrimp, left the line and enjoyed. Boy was it good! Very well seasoned and nice sized shrimp. We wanted that experience again so we decided on 8/27/22 to visit their storefront and order the large shrimp dinner and chose fries as our side. It's really nice inside and plenty of room for indoor seating but there is only take out, no table/chairs to eat in. The portions are a nice size and I feel it's definitely worth the price! Young people working there and they were very friendly which is always a plus in my book. We will continue to patronize this establishment now that we know it exists. Thank you Haire shrimp, you are simply MARVELOUS!

I had an opportunity to try Haire's at the Taste of Chicago this evening. The service was polite and prompt, well packaged and hot. MOST IMPORTANTLY, it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Loved the Gulf Shrimps. I ordered the shrimp dinner with spaghetti and coleslaw. Delicious! I highly recommend Haire's Ordered takeout and my order was ready in approximately 15 minutes. These are Louisiana Gulf Shrimps y'all. Lightly seasoned and breaded so you actually taste the shrimp! Again, I recommend this restaurant.

If you're from the South side of Chicago and have never had Haire's you should be ashamed of yourself. Black owned/operated restaurant serving some of the tastiest fried shrimp the South Side has to offer. I miss seeing Mr. Haire sitting in his booth, glad the legacy continues. Go get some!

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the food here & I'm not for bringing down any Black Owned Businesses. However, I felt totally disrespected by whoever the lady was who damn near refused to sell me 2 beverages. Upon getting my food, I was otp with my Mom, who decided she wanted a pop. I stood patiently and waited for someone to come back to the register. I asked the guy in the back what kind of pop he had. The lady in the back shouted there wasn't any. The guy said there was pineapple and Pepsi. Then told the lady I was at the window waiting to be rung up. She then started yelling about how it was "over with"....she then proceeded to fuss about "her rule" stating the next time a customer has paid, they're not allowed to purchase anything else. I was very upset & paid for the pops because my mother wanted it. Once I got inside my car I was fuming...I'm a paying customer! I wasn't someone begging for free items. I both paid & tipped for my food. Very disrespectful! I'd rather spend my money in my neighborhood with black business owners than to spend my money with 'the others'.....Next time my momma gon be drinking water. The food was excellent, the original cashier, very pleasant, the guy who did the hand off. Awesome. I was spoken to rudely DIRECTLY, but that lady could have waited until there were no customers in earshot to decide she didn't want to sell me beverages.

These shrimps are delicious. However, I must say the employees have no customers service training. They seems to be good people. They just have zero people skills.

This place is really amazing! Serving sizes are really affordable. Batter for shrimp is perfect. Shrimp are deeeelicious. Always satisfying. Sides are good too. Either fries or spaghetti. Service is fast even when busy.

Shrimp were cleaned and fresh. golden brown shrimp were beautiful and very appetizing! Yummy! I recommend this place and will be paying another visit shortly.

I've been looking for seafood done right and this is it! The shrimp are good and seasoned perfectly!! The customer service was top notch. The restaurant is clean and nice.

I started eating Pop's shrimp (didn't have a name on the train so I called him Pops) back in the 90's when all he had were two train cars (caboose) on Stony Island @ 85th. He was an awesome old man with a heart of gold. Very friendly and his customer service was well beyond what we get in today's world. One train car was use for storage & supplies; the other for preparing, frying and selling his shrimp. Mind you that's all that's sold...shrimp (delicious shrimp)! Oh, you can get fries and/or spaghetti. But the only seafood you gonna get are shrimp. On Friday nights my Bestie & I would come to the City to hang out. However, we had the consume food before drinks. She always wanted to go the JJ Fish. I could not understand why the parking lot was full of car but the JJ restaurant was empty. All I could see were two train cars in the back with a parking lot up front. One day I decided to walk back there to see what was going on. As I approached the stairs to this train car a gentleman was coming out with his bag of food. I asked him, 'what was this place' he replied 'a shrimp house'! I said on a train; are they any good? He then responded 'once you try the shrimp here you aren't going to want to go any place else. That man did not lie. These are the best shrimp this side of the Mississippi River. Oh let me not forget the spaghetti. I don't eat spaghetti much especially outside of my family. I really enjoy the recipe that is used at Haire's Gulf Shrimp. RIP Pops, I'm going to miss seeing you in your favorite spot in the new location. But I see they have a life size statue of you in your spot! I pray that your family continue with your rich tradition and family recipe. I already noticed they changed the container that your food is served but the shrimp are still the same! If you are in the area and got a taste for fried shrimp stop in, I'm certain you will not be disappointed.

Delicious shrimp and Turkey spaghetti I think the prices are little high but the food is really good

Its totally worth it and Im from Louisiana. 1. They clean the shrimp 2. Good amount for the price. 3. No sides come with the bags 4. My friends swear the spaghetti is great 5. No one from any US southern STATE EATs crackers with shrimps. If you know someone that does - please contact me. 6. I promised the elder would be in the corner. Sadly, he was not AND IT'S MY ONLY COMPLAINT. 7. why not 5 stars? Cuz i don't lile writing reviews for 1 visit. My next trip will tell me if its a fluke or standard. For now... Its what i recommend and i will definitely return. Hate my bogus people just getting me here. P.S. its a flour touch of cornmeal batter as it should be just as we do in Louisiana. I have heard great things about Haire's Gulf Shrimp for awhile and always forgot to stop by! I saw this place on Chicago's best and was sold. I was out running errands with my mom like two hours ago and thought about Haire's!!! My mom lovesssssssss shrimp so I wanted stop by. I don't eat shrimp really anymore but was still excited to try em out.... We pull up, the outside has a red awning and the front door says OPEN. I step on in. The place was empty except one older gentleman sitting eating shrimp and reading a newspaper! I speak to him he speaks back. I order two small shrimp dinners that comes with spaghetti or fries. I picked the spaghetti for both and I order two large cole slaws which are only 4oz a piece. (Your meal comes with 2oz of cole slaw which I didn't know) My total was $27 and some change. I continued to take pictures of the restaurant then I asked the older gentleman was he the owner, Mr. Haire's. He replied yes!!! So I introduced myself and shook his hand. I told him people have been raving about his shrimp and that has gotten great reviews on Yelp! He smiled and I told him I heard that he got his recipe from his mom. He said he did but he tweaked it . He told me that he hoped I enjoy it. By that time my food was ready! I took it to the car and gave my mom her order and took mine. We busted it open right there in the lot! You get a lot of shrimp for a small order!! The shrimp were cooked to perfection!!!! Nice golden brown breading,(no filter on my pictures) nicely seasoned and were a nice size. The breading to shrimp ratio was perfect. They weren't fishyyyyy tasting like some shrimp restaurants are. You know some shrimp places shrimp taste like they came out of Garfield Park's lagoon...this wasn't the case here! The spaghetti was a nice hood spaghetti. Hood spaghetti doesn't have ltalian sausage it has ground beef. It was very tasty. I am not a fan of cole slaw but it complimented everything so well. With you order you get 2oz of cole slaw, hot sauce and cocktail sauce. You also get crackers on the side. That must be a southern thing. If you haven't tried Haire's Gulf Shrimp I suggest you do so!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!

There's something beautiful about a place that focuses on 1 thing and does it to perfection. The art of simplicity at its finest is what this place is all about. You have a choice of fried shrimp or more fried shrimp. That's all you have to worry about and if you're unsure, I'd opt for more fried shrimp. It's the definition of a hole in the wall with its divey vibes of decor dating back to the 90s, but don't let the looks or the bulletproof glass deter you from what just might be some of the best fried shrimp Chitown has to offer. The bulletproof enclosure makes sense, as I'd probably want to rob this place for some shrimp too if I couldn't get my fix. Made fresh to order each time, there's no secret to that. The shrimps are juicy, sweet, and served piping hot fresh, my advice is to eat it right away. The batter is light and seasoned just the right amount with a tiny bit of heat to get your blood flowing, if it's not enough, don't worry they give you a container of Louisiana style hot sauce to add a extra bite for you spicy lovers and some cocktail sauce for you traditionalist. It's what you would expect from a no frills place that only serves fried shrimp. Don't be too caught up in the ambiance, it's all about the money maker fried shrimp. The only thing you'll regret is getting more. Stay fat mother suckers

I wanted to try this restaurant on Juneteenth because they were having a special, but I wasn't able to. I went back the next weekend and got a large bomb bag with fries on the side. The food was AMAZING. The shrimp were perfectly fried and quite large. The fries were good too, but the shrimp are the star of the show obviously. The service was quick. I ordered and my food came out in about 8-10 minutes. I was honestly surprised. There weren't many people in the restaurant when I was there. I don't know if that had something to do with the quick service or not. I will definitely be returning to this black owned business and showing my support. Great food and great service will always be able to get my money!
