"Hakata Ramen already operates two restaurants — one in Quincy and one in Boston’s Back Bay, the latter of which is called Shin Hakata Ramen — and now it has tapped Waltham for its next expansion. The Japanese restaurant specializes in ramen and sushi, and husband-and-wife team Simon Su and Jing Zhang will be running the Waltham location, which takes over the space that was previously home to Sabatino’s Italian Kitchen at 895 Main St., according to Patch. (They also run the Back Bay location, and Su is a co-owner of the Quincy one, per a 2017 Boston Globe “cheap eats” review of the Boston location.)" - Dana Hatic

Google
Great service and food! We ordered a few appetizers that were out quickly, as well as different ramen and a poke bowl. All of the dishes were fresh and the portion size was more than enough. Would definitely visit again!

Google
First time coming here with my girlfriend. Originally, I came here to try out the ramen, but I ended up getting the gyudon. My partner chose the tomato ramen. We also ordered the Pyramid roll and the Hawaiian roll. The service was pretty good. Waiter had us seated within seconds and gave us our own pitcher of ice cold water. He was friendly and attentive. Would definitely come back again to try out some other items on the menu.

Google
Hakata Ramen is a long time standing Japanese restaurant that has multiple options of sushi and ramen across their menu. The staff are nice, accommodating, and overall food came out quickly. We tried the ramen and sushi. Sushi was pretty standard overall, and the ramen was good and had a decent amount of toppings in the bowl. The broth was flavorful and the noodles weren't too hard but cooked well. Overall, a solid location in the Waltham area.

Google
Visited Hakata for the first time. In my opinion, it was excellent. Tantan Ramen? Very good Chicken Katsu Curry? Excellent. My girlfriend enjoyed her Tonkotsu ramen. She thought the Edamame could have been salted heavier. Give Hakata a try.

Google
The sushi is outstanding, they present it with flowers as a garnish. Fish is so fresh, buttery and thick. Rolls were light on the rice and heavy on the fish. ramen had a very nice broth and toppings were yummy but topping portions were smaller than I’ve had elsewhere.

Google
The first time I went there was years ago and I wasn't a fan then, but it is totally different now. The ramen broth is very well flavored and the noodles are perfectly bouncy. We got the tomato ramen and tonkatsu. The egg was really phenomenal too. We also got the avocado ball, which was really fantastic. It has a bunch of different cuts of sushi fish inside and a mango sauce outside. It felt like we got our ramen within minutes of ordering, which was awesome. I think I'm going to become a regular here.

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
I frequent Hakata. Their sushi and ramen are absolutely delicious! Their Spicy Tonkatsu ramen is my go-to, it has all of my favorite ramen ingredients in it. They also have an awesome lunch special, 3 maki rolls for $18! Their spicy tuna is one of my favorite basic rolls. I normally do takeout or delivery but that it's also great for dining in! Their service is quick and it's cozy inside.

Yelp
We tried Hakata Ramen a few weeks ago, overall the food was good. We ordered sushi and ramen. The sushi was pretty standard and some of the rolls around the room looked really fancy and nice. Ours was simple and delicious. The ramen on the other hand was not as good as we hoped. The broth lacked flavor and was served warm but not piping hot as we have had at other establishments. The depth of flavor was pretty minimal across the Tonkotsu and the spicy ramen my boyfriend got. The toppings were good.

Karen C.

Yelp
Got a bowl of Tonkatsu Spicy Ramen, which was so spicy that my daughter did not finish the broth. She said noodles were good, though. I got 3 rolls - 1 salmon avocado, 1 Alaska (salmon, avocado & cucumber) and 1 Beauty of Alaska Roll. All were good, fresh and rice was also fresh. Took 1 star off because there was no soy sauce and when I asked for soy sauce, they brought out a bowl of soy sauce. Not sure what I was supposed to do with that, lol. I was even more curious where all the soy sauce containers were at the restaurant!

Jon K.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here and got the Curry Chicken Donburi along with pork gyoza. The curry chicken rice bowl was amazing and reminded me of the curry I had in Japan. The gyoza tasted fresh and homemade, unlike at many Japanese places where it's obvious they were frozen. Overall, a solid meal--looking forward to trying this place in person soon!

Samuel A.

Yelp
Excellent: - shrimp tempura roll - spicy salmon roll Good: - Alaskan roll - Spicy tuna roll

Jeff K.

Yelp
You really can't go wrong here for great Japanese in the greater Boston area. I order here once a week. Personal favorites: Curry Chicken Donburi Torched Salmon Roll

Ken H.

Yelp
Nice little spot for ramen. Had their spicy tonkatsu ramen. Very solid if you're looking for a spicy savory lunch

Geetha M.

Yelp
Hakata is our go to local ramen restaurant. They also have a large variety of sushi and we've tried most of them and they're great.

Love F.

Yelp
I am very disappointed with this place. Their ramen noodles and broth are not authentic. The ramen itself is not. Serving customers with lo mein noodles is so wrong. If you're running a business to serve Japanese food, then make sure to do it right.

Megan Y.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way back from apple picking on a rainy day and it was the perfect late lunch! Parked along the street right outside, and we tried the tan tan ramen, tonkotsu, spicy tonkotsu and the vegetarian ramen and everyone was very happy with their food! Service was great and we got our food quickly. Would definitely come back!

Jon C.

Yelp
Decent sushi and ramen. Nothing that knocked my socks off but it was okay. Service was fast, good l, and friendly no issues. The restaurant was dimly lit aside from the sushi bar but otherwise on par.

Nikki Y.

Yelp
Looking for a some quality ramen?! You found the best place in Boston. I was out here visiting my boyfriend and wanted something warm to complement the rainy weather. Menu: There is a large menu with sushi, bowls/plate, and ramen. They even have a lunch special from open- 3pm Monday-Saturday. Parking: There is street parking on the side of the restaurant. Quality of Food: Ramen is one of my favorite meal and this was pretty good. The soup base was flavorful and ingredients were very fresh. The ramen noodles were soft but not overcooked. My boyfriend copied me and ordered the tonkotsu ramen. He said it was just as good as LA ramen places. If you're in the area and looking for good ramen, I would highly recommended you come here :) We will be coming back to try the other ramens and sushi.

Michael B.

Yelp
Very fresh! Sushi and Ramen were great. If you're tired of the same old chicken, salmon and beef, give Hakata a go.

Wern O.

Yelp
TLDR: lovely bowl of ramen Really enjoyed coming here on a random weekday lunch. I asked the server what her favorite bowl was and the tantan ramen did not disappoint. Full of flavor, spicier than the usual ramen bowl it hit all the right notes. Savory. The accoutrements were full of flavor and balanced the meal. Definitely will be coming here again!

Christine L.

Yelp
This place is so good, the sushi was so fresh! Went there for an early dinner on a weekday, so there was no wait. It seems like most people order takeout from here; they were really busy packing orders and we saw a bunch of people come to pick up food. We ordered the spicy maki combo ($21) and miso ramen ($15). I had the spicy maki combo and the fish was so fresh. The ratio of fish to rice was amazing; they gave large pieces of fish that simply melted in my mouth. They didn't give me lots of rice with small amounts of fish, which is definitely a plus. The presentation was also really pretty, accurately representing how good the food tasted. The spicy maki combo also came with miso soup, which was a nice side but definitely not the star of the show. The sushi was so yummy and flavorful. I'm so excited to try more of their sushi! I didn't have the miso ramen personally, but my friend said it was delicious. It wasn't too salty and the ramen egg was cooked to perfection. She also liked the fact they grated garlic and had corn in the soup, it really added to the taste of the soup, making it tastier. They were also pretty generous with the size of the chashu slices. Definitely come here for dinner or lunch and try their sushi. I highly recommend it! I was worried I wouldn't be able to find parking at first since it was all street parking. However, there are a bunch of open spots (non-metered) nearby. I ended up easily finding a spot right in front of the restaurant. This was a delicious meal. I'm excited to come back here again!

Gloria Y.

Yelp
Their sushi and ramen is delicious. We also like their fried squid appetizer. The only criticism would be that their tempura dish comes out lukewarm and never fresh and hot.

Juliet K.

Yelp
Took a risk and a 1/2 hour drive to get ramen tonight since I am just recovering from Covid and wanted comfort food. We ordered vegetarian miso ramen, Tantan ramen, and chicken karaage. The ramen noodles have a good texture. Toppings are very fresh and simple. Good flavor on the vegetarian miso broth. Not spicy at all. The Tonton Ramen broth is a bit spicy and you can taste the sesame oil. The chicken Karaage was fried well, with a light batter and nice crunch. I liked the black pepper on the chicken. We won't make the drive every week for takeout but I'm so glad we did tonight.

Morrine M.

Yelp
Best sushi ever! The torched salmon roll is always great, definitely my favorite thing from here. The variety in the maki combo was also great, my favorite was the spicy tuna maki. Server was also very friendly, and the restaurant was casual and not too crowded. Food came out quickly too!

Julienne P.

Yelp
Ordered a sashimi diner, dragon roll and some other roll and it was great! Everything tasted fresh and the rolls had great flavors. We did take out so I can't comment on the interior or service. Take out order was easy and quick!

Denise K.

Yelp
We love their food but they're not great with take out and making sure you have all of your food. My son and I always order the Chicken Donburi - the curry sauce is so good. Other items are tasty as well. We got a take out order and they did not include my husbands food. This is not the first time so just a reminder to check your order before you leave the store.

Kate B.

Yelp
If I could give a ZERO star on service and communicate I would, I'm the your regular customer at Hakata ramen my daughter and I love your food and today I just pick up my kid from school at 2:15 and try to get hot ramen at your place.I was there at 2:35 pm with bad feeling that your staff told us that store already close for breaking time and he said after 2:30 pm cannot accept dine in . It was very disappointing and the way he said was very rude and disrespectful with NO SERVICE MIND!!!!! We are very upset about this if your management can update the dining time so we can know ahead of time not show up after 2:30. We will go somewhere else after this. We really love your food but need to educate your staff more on how to communicate and have more service mind of a service job. FYI don't forget to put up your sign!

Kaahu A.

Yelp
Arrive about 45 minutes to closing and they refused to serve us. The sushi chef nodded his head to host to say no to us. There was only one group eating and so we were a little confused. So glad we left cause we found Waku Waku which was amazing.

Lori Y.

Yelp
Updating my review as I have also tried the ramen here! It's hard to find good vegetarian ramen but Hakata does it right - and they even have more than one option! Super flavorful with plenty of veggies, and of course the braised egg YUM. Service is also so fast every time I've visited. I've had both the spicy and regular vegetarian ramens; next time I will try the tomato!

Thien B.

Yelp
Nestled in the corner of a main st in Waltham is Hakata. My sister and I tried the ramen and fried chicken bites. Both were amazing. I got the Spicy Miso ramen, and was pleased. It had all the components of a good ramen: hot pork flavored broth, al dente noodles, runny egg yolk and toppings. The ramen is flavorful and spicy here. Love the spicy chili oil they put out on the table. Pricing is reasonable too! Would recommend to stop by if you are craving ramen in Waltham area.

Ani G.

Yelp
Great spot for fresh sushi or ramen. Only tried the sushi, but portion and very fresh. Great local spot would go again!

Carol W.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night since my 10 year old foodie daughter had been crying for "good" ramen. The dried packaged stuff at home wasn't satiating her craving! While my daughter ordered the Tonkatsu ramen, my husband and I got sushi. We also ordered the chicken karaage. The chicken karaage came in very small pieces which initially appeared very off putting to me. It looked cheap, and I was worried it was going to be too dry from over frying such small pieces of chicken. However, I was impressed by how moist and juicy the chicken was inside the crispy coating. Now onto the sushi - honestly...it was just okay, and I wouldn't return for that. I'll admit I'm a real sushi snob. There are only a few places in the Boston area that I'll go to get my sushi. Hands down, what you come here for is the ramen! I'm a big soup person, make my own pho at home, and I can tell the difference between quality broth and cheaply made ones. Firstly, the broth had a depth of flavor and wasn't overly salty. Secondly, we had leftovers and stored it overnight in the fridge. The next morning, all of the liquid congealed into very thick gelatin. I don't often see that when I order pho and ramen take-out and have leftovers. It's usually a big watery mess the next day as the broth is mostly MSG based. I'm super impressed with their ramen and would definitely return for that and would be willing to try other non-sushi items.

Byron S.

Yelp
The food is very flavorful and served rather quickly. The Ramen was spicy but not unbearable. The classic rolls I ordered were just that- classic and tasty. Overall, not too long of a wait to be seated or served. The waiter was very polite and accurate. The food was delicious. I would definitely return when I'm in the area.

Christie L.

Yelp
Everything I've had here has been delicious and I would definitely get again. I've tried the salmon avocado maki and eel avocado maki which were both great. They make the sushi with a thin layer of rice stuffed with fresh fish and large chunks of avocado. Perfect ratio and super fresh. Shrimp and vegetable tempura here is perfect. The tempura is light and crispy and not too oily. It was one of the best I've ever had! Super good and makes me crave it while writing this. Spicy tonkotsu ramen is super delciious! I like that the ramen comes with all the additional toppings that other ramen shops might charge extra for. It had corn, fish cake, fresh bamboo shoots, ramen egg, corn, scallions, bean sprouts and some fancy red seaweed (I think?). The broth is creamy and pork is smokey. I also like that the ramen egg has a sweet and savory soy taste.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Okay ramen place on waltham. Street parking only so it may be a struggle. The ramen is just okay. Not great but not bad Friendly service.

Cindy H.

Yelp
This place has actually improved quite a bit! We've been here a few times and have been pleasantly surprised. Ramen is good and the sushi is actually pretty good! Quick casual place to grab a bite.

Nicole C.

Yelp
This is really good food the salmon is really tasty and the ramen is also really tasty and they have marble soda and you should really come here.

Howie H.

Yelp
Stopped in at noon on a Thursday for a table of six without a reservation, no issues. Lots of categories to choose from their menu. Even vegetarian options. The server stated their miso soup was vegetarian. I ordered the spicy miso. The broth was decent, not too salty. The noodles were cooked right, a little dente, the way I like. I had a bite of the seaweed salad, very standard. I also had a couple pieces of the spicy tuna roll, very mild on the spicy level. Our vegetarian ordered a couple rolls that came with miso. She liked her lunch. One person ordered the tomato ramen and liked it. The rest of the group ordered rolls and thoroughly enjoyed. We finished with mochi desserts. Two pieces of mochi with whipped cream came on each plate. The place has about a dozen tables with a sushi bar. Quite spacious. Street parking is all I saw which wasn't bad before noon. After we came out, the street parking was a lot less free.

Chaun425 C.

Yelp
Tantan noodles were perfect! I had them ease up on spicy levels, not too spicy. I added extra chachu on the side. Definitely hit the spot!

Nicholas A.

Yelp
Best sushi in Waltham hands down. Don't waste your time eating sushi anywhere else. This is is simple the best.

J N.

Yelp
Got takeout ramen and poke bowls. The ramen was just okay. On the small side and the fish in the poke bowls wasn't high quality. Both my husband and I agreed. Looked fresh though. I actually threw out mine out after eating a third cuz it just didn't taste good. Not from the area but will be sticking to the Framingham Japanese restaurant we usually go to with much better quality for less cost.

Mark P.

Yelp
Nice little Japanese spot for ramens, sushi, and side dishes like fried chicken. One of the better sushi places in the Waltham area, with a few cuts of fish I haven't seen much around at other spots. Service is also quite friendly. Only negatives are 1) no alcohol, 2) the sushi rice could have been better - both texture wise and taste, but not terrible. Would come again

Nikolai K.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and it was awesome! I've been craving ramen all week and my wife had an extra night at home after a cancelled flight, so we went out to get some delicious food. We were both extra hungry so decided to get some sushi and ramen both. For the sushi we shared the salmon avocado maki and the eel avocado maki. I really liked both rolls, especially the salmon. They make the sushi very well here with a very thin layer of rice and completely stuffed with fresh fish and smooth avocado. The flavors and textures burst in your mouth, making the maki some of the best I've ever had, seriously. We both had the spicy tonkotsu ramen. Very nice portion, delicious flavorful broth. I distinctly remember how fresh the noodles and bamboo shoots tasted, which really speaks to the quality of the ingredients. The pork was also great with a nice smoky flavor. I would definitely come back here for the sushi and the ramen, and I imagine their signature maki rolls and nigiri are also great!

Ilisa S.

Yelp
We returned to this restaurant after a bit of a hiatus, drawn by memories of great experiences. Our takeout order of sushi and donburi was inedible. The fish had a strange odorand looked old The "meat" in the donburi was all fat, no vegetables and primarily rice. Super disappointing and, frankly, gross.

Brady C.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, very chill and nice. Even better food, reminded me of my time in Japan.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Ordered karaage chicken and two bowls of ramen. The chicken came in small pieces which I did not expect. Most of the small bites were either mostly all bread or very chewy. Nothing about the ramen gave the impression that it was fresh or made in house. Both broths had a bit of a rancid smell and the noodles are clearly not made on site. Neither my girlfriend nor I finished our ramen. I would not recommend this establishment.

Sebastian H.

Yelp
Favorite ramen place in the bay. Honestly.. incredible ambience. Location is very ok, along with parking (small parking lot!!) however the food makes up for it. You order via QR code, which I thought was interesting. Food always comes out quickly which is a huge plus

Dee S.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout from here several times before because I like their ramen - it's really tasty and a little healthier than some other ramen places with nice fresh veggies and a broth that isn't super oily. Portions have always been on the small side. Tonight I ordered ramen and sushi and payed $18 for 4 little pieces of sushi. See the pics I attached. I assumed for that price we would have gotten twice as much sushi? It was close to their closing time so maybe that was why? But... my boyfriend and I both kind of stared at it. Ended up spending about $55 on food for 2 and boyfriend is still hungry so unless I want ramen and only ramen I probably won't be back.

Hrishikesh H.

Yelp
Went there for lunch on Sunday and chef's special 4 piece sushi and spicy ramen. The wait staff is exceptional. They are friendly and very prompt at the service. I rode my bicycle to the restaurant, they let me take my bike in and keep it inside tucked away in the corner. The server also lent me his phone charger as my phone needed charging for my return trip on the bike. I thought the food was really delicious as well. The sushi was at perfect temperature, the rice was well seasoned. Ramen with toppings was plated artfully and tasted really good I will be back for more

Jeremy K.

Yelp
Hakata is now open! And I couldn't be happier to see this local chain's newest, third location pop up on Waltham's main street. I have not been to the other two locations but with few ramen options in the area, I was beyond elated to see the place open for business. I walked in to a fairly busy restaurant with a sushi counter and numerous tables. The layout is open and spacious, the tables aren't crowded. Since I was eating alone I opted for the counter and was given a two-sided menu page. On one side was the sushi roll offerings, on the other the ramen and other Japanese specialties. The establishment doesn't take itself too seriously, and has fun, framed artwork featuring animal portraits. But enough about about the space, let's talk food. I went ahead and ordered up one of my all-time favs, Tantan ramen ($13.95). It has a roasted sesame broth base and traditionally features spicy ground pork with some very thin strands of chili peppers. Hakata has a twist to it which was both unexpected and frankly, awesome. Instead of having ground pork on top, they instead took their chashu (roast pork) and diced it up, giving the bowl some nice contrast of texture. The broth had great depth of flavor, wasn't too salty and the toppings made for one tasty bowl of ramen. I cannot wait to go back and try some of their other variations including their vegetarian tomato ramen, their spicy miso and other tonkotsu variations. They have like 6-7 options, if not more. Service was attentive and friendly and the place is spotless. And street parking is pretty easy to get around there. I wish them great success and hope they become a long-term staple in the Waltham restaurant scene. I cannot wait to return.

Zan D.

Yelp
Hakata is my family's go to sushi restaurant. We almost never get ramen so I can't really comment. The first time we tried it we got ramen and I remember it being solid. The sushi is consistently high quality. The salmon donburi is my favorite and the fish always tastes fresh. The karaage is also very good. It is not a super crispy fried chicken but it is little nuggets with a great spiced coating. It's reasonably priced, clean, and has great food. A great spot in Waltham!

Songyi W.

Yelp
Happy to see a ramen place open in Waltham (should be pretty popular among students). However, I thought the ramen was just ok - we tried both the Tonkotsu and the Miso Ramen and the Tonkotsu broth was definitely more flavorful (without being overly salty). The bowl comes with two thin slices of pork, a couple pieces of bamboo shoots, one sheet of seaweed, half an egg, and some scallions. You have a choice between yellow noodle and white noodles and I personally preferred the yellow one, which was a little bit firmer and more chewy. Overall it was a pretty standard bowl of ramen - not my favorite in Boston for sure, but still a decent choice for a quick meal. I also tried the chicken karaage and would say that they needed some improvement - it was pretty bland and $7 is on the pricey side for 5-6 bite sized chicken. The service was pretty fast and friendly and the manager walked around to each table to collect feedback - hopefully they will get better and I might come back in a few months to try a couple more things.

Maryam S.

Yelp
This place was already busy on a Saturday at 12 when we got in. This was a good sign. We ordered the only vegetarian ramen dish, and sushi rolls. The food was pretty great. I order the crazy maki to go with my ramen bowl since I still needed some protein. The menu is pretty clear to read. The service was also very nice. Watch out because the ramen bowl is pretty big! Although everyone else around me finished theirs just fine!

Alison K.

Yelp
I tried the Spicy Tonkosu ramen- super flavorful, not too spicy broth, the chashu was super tender, all the toppings were great except the egg was overcooked (I generally expect the yolk to be molten). My boyfriend got the Tantan ramen, which has a more sesame-based broth and instead of normal ground pork, the meat was more like their chashu diced up. A very delicious twist! We got the takoyaki and karaage as appetizers- both pretty delicious, served very hot. The karaage was so juicy and flavorful, I'd want to go back just to order it again. They also have sushi, which I'm interested in trying. Our server was very friendly and overall, the prices were fair.

David M.

Yelp
WOW! $16 for soup and wasn't that good either. Oh well from out of town and no plans to make a return visit.
