Best Middle Eastern Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"With five locations across Austin, including this one on the Drag, Halal Bros has built a loyal following for its halal meat platters and wraps. Falafel fans take note: The restaurant grinds the chickpeas fresh in-house, making the falafel patties fluffier rather than dense. The setup is casual and fast, making it a student favorite. It also offers online orders for pickup." - Darcie Duttweiler

Hill Country Brewery Beerburg Opens Mexican Restaurant Taqueria la Violeta - Eater Austin

"The West Campus location of restaurant Halal Bros. caught on fire last week, and no one was hurt. The fire began at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 30, starting in the wall of the restaurant which then traveled into the attic. Because of the damage, this location will remain closed until further notice. There are three other locations around the city." - Nadia Chaudhury

WHY IS THIS PLACE ONLY IN AUSTIN?! It’s that good. The Combination Plate with extra sauce and pita is an absolute must-try—you’ll thank me later. The portions are incredibly generous, easily making three meals out of one order. It’s flavorful, filling, and always a stop on my list whenever I’m in town.

A friend had highly recommended this place so decided to try it. Ordered the Beef shawarma wrap which had a very strong meat smell and taste. Left half of it. The combo chicken gyro over rice plate tasted pretty good. Also got Falafel side order which was delicious. Crispy from the outside and soft from the inside. The parking is almost non-existent. Space for 3 cars to park and there was only 1 person dining in. We wanted to dine in but couldn’t find parking so very disappointed. The inside seating area was also not too clean. Nothing special about the service staff.

Google
My shawarma wraps were loaded with meat and veggies. They were well worth the price. The beef was way better than the chicken. The chicken was bland, but still good. Overall this is a great restaurant.

Google
Got a lamb shawarma, all the way is recommended by the guy at the counter. Was very tasty. Had leftovers. Would be better if it were $1 or $2 cheaper, But it is good. Atmosphere is like a fast food place. They have fountain drinks, but I feel like this is more of a pick it up and go home kind of a place.

Google
I tried this place for the first time a couple weeks ago and it did not disappoint, fair prices, open late and most importantly the food was great 🔥 Pictured below is the Chicken Shawarma

Whenever we go out near downtown we always go to this place. The last time we went (a few months ago) the food quality has dropped significantly. However we thought it was just a one time thing and decided to go again but still the food was so bad. I didn’t want to write a bad review here but had too as we did go to the front counter to tell them about the decline in food quality but all they did was smile and laugh.

Google
I got the beef kabob and it was well seasoned!! The plate might be pricey but it is good so you get your money’s worth!! The baklava is mid, i’ve had better. Parking is tight, they only have a few spots at the front, so good luck!!

Google
Whenever we visit Austin, we try to have at least one meal here. Till now we have tried Gyro Over rice, Chicken Over rice, Combination Over Rice, Chicken Shawarma Wrap, Falafel, Hummus and French Fries. Everything is absolutely delicious. They have seating arrangements both inside and outside. Only problem is the parking lot is really small (only 3 car can be parked there). Even if you can park here, it is really hard to drive out from the restaurant. Last time we parked at the In-N-Out Burger adjacent to the restaurant. Don't know if it is safe or not to park there.

Yelp
This place has all the good eats. I have to advise anyone going to come here to try the loaded fries. The portion size is huge. Some say quality over quantity. The loaded fries give you both. The service is amazing. The staff make sure you are well taken care of. The ask, how is everything going, how was your meal. Make sure you get your bang for your buck. It's a very casual small place. The only thing is. You might have a bit of trouble parking. But once you do. It is well worth the small Hassel of parking. You will highly enjoy. I will be back to take some beef loaded fries next.

Yelp
As good as ever. Made to order and fresh with attention to detail. Staff is friendly. Be prepared to wait a bit, but it's worth it because this isn't being microwaved. I lived in Dubai and this is as close as we can get to decent Middle Eastern food. Portions are still just as big as pre-covid. Thanks and I'll be back.

Yelp
I had a chicken shawarma over rice -- I thought the rice was surprisingly good (light, fluffy, and seasoned), particularly when paired with the white sauce that was the star of the show. However, the single serving of white sauce (which I requested on the side) felt quite meager, and I'd definitely ask for extra next time. It would also have helped given that I found the chicken shawarma meat to be pretty dry. That said, this is probably one of the best halal cart style options in the area, and this was indeed a generous portion of food. I just wish they'd allow half/half on the meats (beyond the combo of gyros and chicken, which is different from the chicken shawarma).

Dani H.

Yelp
I usually don't write reviews but wow this was soooooo good! I got the combo over rice plate and added falafel! Rice was cooked perfectly and meats were very tender! Fresh salad everything 10/10
google avatar

Brettny J.

Yelp
I still love this! It's just as good as when they were named Halal Guys and all the Indians would crowd around the food truck after being 6th street. I didn't give them 5 stars because sometimes they can be difficult with special requests like no or less hot sauce. Which you should definitely ask for because they use a sort of paste which is concentrated and just way too hot, even with the small amount they put on it. It really doesn't matter anyway if you take it to-go because they include the sauces on the side. Anyway don't let the cute kid in the front sway you. Insist on no hot sauce on top! At least that's what I'll try to remind myself next time.

Anais B.

Yelp
Delicious! The gyro and falafel wrap was great! The flat bread was fluffy, the falafel was smashed in the wrap and had a good blend of seasoning. The fries were hot and crispy. We came in the evening, and there was a steady pace of orders. The service was fairly quick, and the ambiance was bright. If you are near UT, it is worth the short walk to try Halal Bros. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
Let's cut to the chase here: It's fine. Prices are reasonable for a nice big container of food, but it's really just a giant plate of rice. You get a handful of salad a good scoop of hummus, seven falafel, and about a quart of dry yellow rice. The falafel are equally fine. Not really crispy on the outside, not really moist on the inside, adequately flavorful if not particularly memorable. Ask for it without white sauce to keep it vegan, and opt for BBQ sauce instead of just more hummus. You'll need something more to get through that vat of rice, so double up, too. Very acceptable. Highly adequate. Exceedingly average. You could do better, by you could also do worse.
google avatar

Melissa I.

Yelp
Really good shawarma! Definitely the cleanest tasting place around and they use fresh ingredients. I recommend this place for the nice service and excellent food.
google avatar

Jane O.

Yelp
Favor delivered pronto. Order was piping hot. Fries loaded with gyro and falafel would feed three people but was so yummy I almost finished it all, much to my regret. I also ate the dolma but had to save the baklava for later. Everything was excellent and I'm totally satisfied.
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
Be aware when ordering from Yelp and clicking "order takeout" instead of ordering from the website! It's an extra $3 per item, I didn't know this for a hot second and thought they just increased the price. Other than that, Halal Bros is very solid food that I've been coming back to for over 5 years.

Talon M.

Yelp
Staff is rude. They dont care about your food or portion control. One box was 1/2 full and the other was full. same price for both. Tried to address it and they said thats how it is, and that if I tipped I would have gotten a bigger portion
google avatar

Bella G.

Yelp
This plate of food was gigantic. I thought I ordered a wrap but it turns out I didn't but this was a pleasant surprise because I ended up taking a lot of food to go. Actually, I'm currently warming up my leftovers as I'm writing this review I don't normally eat lamb but it was full of flavor and the white sauce was a really nice compliment because it was pretty light. Also, I'm not a big fan of tomato chunks but these somehow worked with the plate. Overall- I'll give Halal Bro's a 7.9/10 because the food was good, the servings are large, but it was a little pricey for a college student
google avatar

Sierra S.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! Delicious is an understatement! We were hangry for sure but this place was not only filling but everything we could ever ask for. Sizable portion and well worth. Together the meal was around $28 but could feed you for 2 meals
google avatar

Saira S.

Yelp
So yum! Omg way better than halal guys in California. Very tasteful and fresh! Meat was tender and juicy.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
Halal Bros is soooo good and so iconic among UT students, although I think it's fallen in popularity. I remember it used to be really crowded when I went in 2019, but now there are only a few people inside every time I go. I always get gyro over rice or a combination of gyro and chicken over rice. The gyro tastes better than the chicken. The white sauce and red sauce add a lot to the flavour. I like the loaded fries as well. I've seen the prices go up so much, which is quite sad. $14 gives you a lot of food, but it is still really highly priced. I've heard people say this is one of the worst parking lots in West Campus because it's really hard to get in and out of, so I would never try to park there.
google avatar

Nioma M.

Yelp
Two regular parking spots and one handicapped; don't expect to be able to park easily! Service was pretty slow when we went in at a dead time- took around 15 minutes waiting for two platters. The chicken was cooked to perfection, the lamb wasn't it. Really hard to chew and overcooked. Love it here! Just not getting their lamb again.
google avatar

Novalina N.

Yelp
Large portion and really great tasting! Wasn't planning to eat the whole plate in one sitting, but I'm never good at self-control. I got the combo since I like both the gyro and chicken. I think the gyro is more flavorful, but I still like the texture difference between the two. I wish their menu has salads as a base, instead of only rice or pita. I'd opt for that instead of the rice.
google avatar

Jackie X.

Yelp
Great place by campus to get some quick Mediterranean food! I usually order the lamb bowl that comes with rice, salad, veggies, and pickles. I love putting extra white sauce on top and getting a side of falafel! Super plentiful and cheap.
google avatar

Cherry Y.

Yelp
As a non-local, it was difficult to understand why Austinites raved over Halal Bros (... over Halal Guys, which also used to be near campus!) when I first moved to ATX. But now, both my husband and I are absolute fans, to a point where it's one of the first things my husband wants to eat after going out of town. His favorite is the lamb shawarma over rice and loaded fries, which we used to share between the two of us. Now that I'm vegan, I ordered his usual lamb shawarma over rice and loaded fries --but this time, without the white sauce (the white sauce includes egg). Then for myself, I ordered the falafel over rice with no white sauce. Based on previous reviews that complained of not receiving their dietary accommodations, I was initially concerned, but all of my orders were executed as I had wanted. We'll certainly be back soon to try other vegan options!
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
A classic UT favorite. I don't know what it is about Halal Bros but I'm never not in the mood for it! My goto is the falafel over rice since I don't eat meat. It's not the best falafel I've ever had in the world, slightly dry in my opinion. But the really winner on this plate is definitely the rice, it's so well seasoned and acts as the perfect base for everything else. I wish there were more vegetables in the dish but still a lot more green than nearby restaurants. I'm sad that they upped their prices in the past few years but a very large portion size, definitely at least 2 meals.
google avatar

Ana K S.

Yelp
This is the best bang for your buck by far. The food is great and you can easily get two meals out of one plate -which I did multiple times as a college student lol. I recommend the combo plate with chicken and lamb as well as the loaded fries! It can take a while to get your order but once you do it's absolutely worth it.
google avatar

Kaitlin O.

Yelp
Easily one of the best places to eat near campus ever since they reopened. The prices may look a bit on the higher end, but I promise it's well worth it. You could probably split the rice dishes into 3-4 meals depending on how much you eat. The box is so heavy and they don't skimp on the meat. I recommend drowning your dish in the white sauce- you don't even have to pay extra for it unlike some other places that I've seen. Convenient location, good value, better food!
google avatar

June K.

Yelp
Lamb over rice was so goood!!! It is so much better than Halal Guys in NYC. The meat was so tender and perfectly seasoned. The portion was big enough for two meals. Tabouleh was also great. I will order again when I am back in Austin!
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
This has been a stable in my life for many years now. While the prices have gone up over time (it used to be soooo worth for the value and amount of food that they gave you), I would say that it is still a great deal. The portions are huge so you can often get two meals out of an order. The food comes out fast and if you dine-in you can add more white or red sauce. If you are taking out I highly recommend getting extra white sauce because that is the one of the best parts! Halal Bros has the best halal food I have had in my life - so I will continue to frequent this place whenever I get a chance
google avatar

Anees T.

Yelp
Their beef shawarma is one of the best I've had! Seriously the quality and flavor of the meat is so amazing! Please do yourself a favor and try it! I absolutely love shawarmas and have had a lot, but this one is up there
google avatar

Shradha A.

Yelp
This place is a solid 3.5 - the customer service is weak as the place is overwhelmed. There is no social distancing practiced, there is barely any parking, everyone is touching everything. But - the gyro and chicken were good. Maybe I suggest this as a takeout option, as the safer and less frustrating route to enjoy their food.
google avatar

Lou T.

Yelp
Place is cramped but the food is so good. Much much better than the halal guys, bro! Rice is so flavorful, gyros is so tender, it's not dry (compared to the halal guys'), portion is considered huge, priced just right and the sauce is spicy and fresh. My only concern is flies and the bathroom. Bros, what does it take to fix the bathroom lock?
google avatar

Angel C.

Yelp
My go-to spot near UT campus, this is definitely THE place to eat if you can't leave the area. I cannot even imagine life without having tried Halal Bros. My favorite menu item is Beef Shawarma over Rice, but the other meat options are also great(I don't ever order falafel so can't speak on that). The red and white sauces are amazing, and I always ask for extra. I honestly really like the vegetable mix they include in the meal, it does a wonderful job of balancing the heavy components of the sauce, meat, and rice. Their fries are honestly so great too, for only $4 last time I checked. It's the same size container as the meals, but stacked to the brim with thick fries topped with the red and white sauces. Absolutely delicious and a good addition, especially if sharing with friends. I eat more than most people in the area, so I'll get fries and a meal if I want to have leftovers for the next day. Since this location burned down a few months ago, and I was suffering the withdrawals of not having Halal Bros, I ended up going to a North Austin location and bought some for my parents as well. My mother, who usually eats the least out of my family, finished her entire Chicken Over Rice, and my dad was focused on his Lamb Over Rice like it was the only love in his life. Asian parent stamp of approval.

Adriana R.

Yelp
The food is not bad but they increase the price whenever they want. I ordered in September 18 the beef shawerma over rice i paid $13.99 less than 2 & 1/2 months is 3 dlls more $16.99. It is crazy!!
google avatar

Anna Q.

Yelp
I always go to Halal Bros with my... well bros. The portions are always super large and enough for 2 meals, with a lot of meat and vegetables. I swear by the Combo Over Rice, which is lamb and chicken over rice. I have been going here for 4 years, and slightly disappointed by the price increase in their menu items at the guad location (from 7.99 to 11.99) which made me come here a bit less but it's still a go-to winner when I'm craving Mediterranean food. The food is served in an aluminum box with a plastic lid, which is the same for to-go orders or if you're eating dine-in. Honestly this is a great concept as it allows easier portability if you were going to take your portion of leftovers home with you. And trust me, you will have leftovers. If you're not too hungry, I would suggest splitting one combo with a friend and make it a combro. Parking is a bit limited, with only 3 spots out in the front and during lunch or dinner times it can get packed. If you can't walk, I recommend trying to find street parking as it's also sometimes difficult to back out of the parking spots onto Guadalupe street at a weird angle. The atmosphere is very casual, with plenty of tables and seats around. You don't need to wait to be seated and order straight from the cashier. They will ask you if you'd like both red and white sauce on your meal, and if you can't handle spicy don't get the red one. It's extra hot! You can always adjust and add your own later. Tip: Order without the red sauce and get it on the side! It's very spicy and you can always get extra from the pumps next to the drink machine.
google avatar

Kiefer B.

Yelp
I was in Austin for work and like to take the opportunity to try new restaurants. I found this place while trying to find something decent near the Capitol. I went in and asked for a recommendation and was not disappointed. I ended up settling on the combo (multi meat) shawarma and it was amazing. I would absolutely recommend this place and will be returning.
google avatar

Mariel T.

Yelp
Trust me- combination over rice with extra white sauce. That's the way to go. It's been my order since college and will never change. It is PERFECT. I only docked a star bc it just isn't the same as when it first opened, but it's still a solid spot!! I'm glad they beat out Halal Guys when that garbage can of a halal spot opened across the street. It was the worst to accidentally order from the wrong spot when ordering delivery!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
I was looking for good Middle Eastern food and I was not at all disappointed by this restaurant. Falafel Over Rice, Loaded Fries, and Dolmas were all delicious. I will order from here again and again.

Bill D.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting Halal Bros and we tried the location at FM 620 and Anderson Mill in North Austin. We were immediately greeted by a very friendly young man by the name of Santiago. He was very helpful and knowledgeable in helping us choose a couple of meals. We chose the Beef Shawerma and the Chicken Shawerma with Santiago's recommendation. We didn't wait long and we were very pleasantly surprised by the portion of our meals! The food was freshly prepared, incredibly tasty and original. Our meals came with generous portions of meat, vegetables and rice, all of which were outstanding. We will certainly return and try more from their substantial menu and would highly recommend to family and friends. The restaurant was very clean with plenty of seating and nice background music. Also had plenty of parking.
google avatar

Cameron C.

Yelp
I like this place, I basically only get the gyro and it's good compared to other places in Austin. Please add cheese fries to your menu!
google avatar

Michele R.

Yelp
My favorite meal of all time! The food is so good, and the staff is always so friendly. Halal BROS is not that same as the other places with Halal in the name! You have to go make sure it's Bros!!! The best!
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
So if you've tried all of the others Including friend's sisters and mothers There's only one meal That tastes like I feel Chicken on Rice from Halal Brothers! There's nothing wrong with Halal Brothers - we think they're pretty good and very popular indeed. Not surprising, honestly. NYC food in Austin. Hell yes. Significantly better than the Halal Guys, but nowhere near as delicious as the best Halal trucks in New York City, not even comparable. Nevertheless well worth a try if you're down in Austin and you want some late night food. And the girl was really friendly and seems to like us. And very cute as well. So hiii. And damn my girlfriend looks good.
google avatar

Murtuza H.

Yelp
Love this place. Been here a few times and can say the chicken shawarma over rice is one of the BEST i have had in a long time. White sauce is incredible. Red sauce is incredible. Quantity for the price is incredible and you will feel full after eating this platter. I live in San Antonio but I will drive the 1.5 hours to pick this food up again.
google avatar

Yeonhwa S.

Yelp
Quick bite of delicious Mediterranean food with BIG portions!!! I absolutely loved their chicken dish. They have a creamy white sauce and red spicy sauce you can put on at your preference. Both were addicting to me. The workers were nice too! No reason not to go back.
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
Nothing too remarkable overall. Somewhat dry meat and the sauce is a bit muted. Gets the job done but not worth going out of your way.
google avatar

Danny L.

Yelp
I will premise this review by saying I only ever order Combo over rice, but it's SO GOOD! This is a great lunch or dinner place! I usually come here for lunch, because the portions are BIG and I usually have enough to take home and eat for dinner. Like I said earlier, I always order combo over rice, which is a mix of meats (lamb, chicken) with fresh veggies and rice. This mixture is delightful to the senses, and in combo with their delicious white sauce, becomes AMAZING! It's always so filling and tastes fresh and flavorful. I usually avoid the red sauce because I'm highly sensitive to spicy foods, but my friends tell me it's also great to mix in if you can tolerate spice. Great place to eat overall! PROS: - sizable portions for the food and for the price - white sauce and red sauce are great toppings - combo over rice offers great variety all in one CONS: - feels a bit cramped on the inside
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
Delicious. The food is so full of flavor and super consistent. staff is friendly, helpful, and always moving. It's nice to see happy staff, especially on the restaurant industry. We drive far to enjoy the food and it's worth it! We get extra pickles, extra sauce with the chicken Shawarma plate!

Yelp
Halal Bros is the definition of all things good and wholesome in this world. A no-nonsense eatery with a variety of options, including vegan options, side options, compostable/recycle bins, plus constantly nice employees, what's not to love? I remember when this establishment was just a wee little shack on Guadalupe. After it's facelift a couple years ago, it's now a cleaner and spacious restaurant that all the Austinites and wannabe-Austinites (ahem, me) trek to for their cravings. And crave I always do!!! Those delish loaded fries--drizzled in ketchup, white sauce, hot sauce, and spices fried to perfection--is truly the best shnack if you're not feeling too hangry. But if you're like me, you're gonna gravitate towards that tantalizing Combination Plate with chicken and lamb meat. There's a fab ratio of meat to basmati rice, and of course the veggies too to balance out your sins for the day. Ask for extra white sauce, and throw in a hot sauce because life is better caliente~ The only negatives I won't knock 'em for is that the bathrooms aren't too nice, and the tables aren't clean all the time. The outdoor seating patio floorboards were a little rickety with birds flocking around for a taste of the fries, so I suggest just chilling indoors if you don't want to be bothered. Honestly, there's not much else to say here except that you're crazy if you haven't made a pit stop here during your trip through ATX yet. Also, the rice plates are perf for takeout, so I suggest you stock up for your trip home.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Halal Bros is one of the best halal places in Austin. I'm a huge fan of halal trucks in NYC (despite the reservations many have about them), but I've yet to find something similar in Austin. Halal Bros doesn't necessarily match up either, but if you're comparing them to a Halal Guys or Kismet's, Halal Bros has completely got them beat. I don't crave halal food as often as I did when I first came to Austin, but this place is always my go-to when I am craving. Their employees are pretty nice too.
google avatar

Eileen W.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place out, so when I found out there was one on Guad I knew I had to go! I'm not that familiar with Mediterranean food so I decided to order a combo over rice, which is what my friend recommended me. Combo (Gyro+Chicken) Over Rice - 4.5/5 Super large portions!!! It honestly could last most people 2 meals. I don't eat much so it literally lasted me 4 meals. I've never been a big fan of lamb/gyro, but halal bro's just made it work. The white sauce is delicious and mixes perfectly with the fresh vegetables, seasoned rice, and meat. I also really enjoyed the rice because it was so flavorful (not your typical white rice). The only thing I would not have added was the red sauce. I don't handle spiciness well so it was a little too much for me. I hear a lot of people ask for it on the side instead of on top. Overall super affordable quick lunch/dinner! I even recommended my friends to come here. Halal bro's definitely got me hooked on Mediterranean food.

Jinsu K.

Yelp
You get tons of food and it's not just the quantity that's satisfying but also quality. It's definitely one of the better halal food I've had and it's very quick and easy.

Yelp
I used to grab Halal Bros for dinner so often during my college years. This one is so conveniently located on the drag and was in walking distance from my apartment. One meal used to last me three dinners because they pack so much in those fossil containers! I always order the combo over rice with extra white sauce and oh my God. Words can not describe how delicious their food is. The meat is cooked to perfection, the rice is wonderful and their secret white sauce is heavenly. The meal comes with lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes as well. I like fixing it all first then enjoying my meal. The food is ready fast and the restaurant is small but efficient. They also play great music. The only downside to Halal Bros is the packing (or lack there of). So coming back to Austin as a visitor, I couldn't find parking and missed being able to walk to this location.
google avatar

Lindsey L.

Yelp
I've had Halal Bros before and have enjoyed it. My friends and I were hungry and we stopped by during the week for dinner. When we walked inside, the restaurant was empty, we were the first to order. We each had our pick of protein over rice, nothing strange or out of the norm. We waited over 35 minutes for our order!! Seven other groups of people (some with full families of over 5 people) ordered after us and ALL seven groups left before us!! I couldn't believe it, since we were just 3 people with the usual rice plate?? We asked about our order and were told "it's not done yet". When it finally was done after 35 minutes, the worker just set our bag on the table and walked away and didn't say a word. No goodbye, no apology, no thanking us for our patience. When I ate the food, it wasn't even that good. After 35 minutes of waiting, a hype is built up, and the food just doesn't live up to that hype. Unfortunately the LONG wait, lack of serving customers in order, and unapologetic service leads me to give 1 star.
google avatar

Kristi M.

Yelp
5 stars for everything. Food, customer service, EVERYTHING. This is the best thing in west campus for sure. The sauces are phenomenal. Incredibly fresh taste. P.s. They are killing it during the whole crazy COVID times.

Steve N.

Yelp
Rude staff, don't have good sauces, to expensive, only have 1 combo and won't allow Any substations ..very weak bad value!!
