17 Best Restaurants to Eat in Uptown Charlotte - Eater Carolinas

"What’s that? The most amazing aroma wafting along the North Tryon Street sidewalk by day or by night (it’s impossible to ignore after stepping out of a show at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center). This cash-only mobile restaurant serves hot food straight out of its walk-up window including chicken and lamb over rice with pita, falafel salad, Philly cheese steaks, and chicken gyros." - Katie Toussaint

Price went up, service went down. This time the guy didn't even give me any sauce, what gives??? Also you always get hassled by homeless people here.

Ri Titilola

Google
I’ve been ordering from here for about two years and have never seen this before. I never asked for extra sauce, yet I was given lamb over rice SOUP. I don’t know if someone there had a bad day or what but this is outrageous and i didn’t even eat much of it. It was even spilling into the bag..

Christine Wei

Google
This is definitely something I can’t get in Cary. One of my friends recommended it and it was relatively cheap and so good! I got the chicken rice platter. Whatever that white stuff is, it’s delicious! The food came out steaming hot, too, so I ate it outside and it didn’t cool off too much.

Google
Amazing food, great price. Fast service and friendly.

Dymen Time

Google
Was not the biggest fan of the lamb dish being finely ground lamb. The white sauce was good and the red sauce definitely is spicy. The surrounding area at night is the most welcoming.

Whenever you are in Uptown Charlotte and you want a quick bite to eat Stop by the Halal Food Truck on the corner of North TRYON & East Trade I love the chicken & lamb over rice. (& ask for the spicy sauce 🫠 You’ll thank me later) Food Items are $11 & Under. They Only Accept Cash.

Usama Najeeb

Google
Not the best halal food truck ever. I ordered the lamb over rice- love sauce but this may have had a bit too much. Large portion and flavor was ok. Did had some stomach problem

Google
Dry!!! Barely any white sauce. Didn’t even provide me with any hot sauce either. 0/10

Yelp
It was a sprinkling a bit, maybe that's why nobody was in line. When I had walked by earlier it had a group of people waiting. I was greeted immediately! Ordered my food and turned to walk away and they called me back. My order was ready in less than 30 seconds. It's on a street corner in front of of the Bank Of America Building. There are a quite a few homeless. But they are harmless. Check this place out! Wish the weather was better, grab & go to a local park to enjoy a delicious meal.

Yelp
Great food. Absolutely delicious. Fast service. Worth a stop for sure each time we visit. The location is in a nice area. Good lighting

Yelp
This place used to be good, but not anymore. The entire cart is mobbed by homeless people. They only take cash, so the homeless will harass you relentlessly and they do nothing about it. Portions are tiny-- quality has gone way downhill, and the prices have gotten higher. $10 for 2 handfuls of wilted lettuce, maybe half a handful of chopped up meat, and if you're lucky, maybe a tiny piece of tomato. They used give you tons of sauce-- this time, the worker had a real attitude. Refused to give me sauce and told me "the sauce is in the food" Don't waste your money or your time.

Yelp
A-1! Super quick service, which was perfect for a 2am bite to eat on the weekend. They were only offering 2 menu items: Chicken over Rice & Chicken and Lamb Combo. That was perfect because we wanted the Chicken and Lamb. Wish we could've ordered 2 but it was CASH ONLY and I only had $13. Here's my review: -Chicken and Lamb combo: DELICIOUS. Make sure you get the white sauce over it. So many delicious flavors. The rice was well seasoned along with the meat. It came with a few slithers of lettuce, which I enjoyed. A LOT of food for $8.99. Total came to exactly $9. You can never go wrong with halal. I would DEFINITELY get it again. The line wasn't too long and the vibes were good.

Yelp
Good but not great. I found the chicken to be pretty basic and bland. Was hoping for more spices. We didn't receive the hot sauce like it said in the description. That may have made it better.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered via Door Dash. The chicken and rice is salty grilled chopped chicken. Paid for a pita ($1) and falafel ($1) the pita was right from the fridge and crumbly the $1 falafel was burnt, cold and disgusting. See the photo. The "tatziki sauce" was not the delightful, light yogurt based sauce we all know and love, but mayo mixed with weird herbs. Unappealing and greasy. I wouldn't order from them again,

Yelp
Every time I'm in Charlotte this food truck is closed and this weekend I got lucky. I've only had Halal food in NY one time and it was very memorable and delicious. I was able to order food through DoorDash and it was ready really quick. I did not get any pictures, but we had Chicken and Lamb Combo, Chicken Over Rice and a Philly Cheesesteak. All of the food was really good and I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Decided to try this place while over on that side of town & it didn't disappoint. The service was good. They were really nice. I had never eaten here before but my friends are always trying to get me to try it. I ordered the chicken & lamb combo with rice, salad & white sauce. It was really good. The food was fresh & so was the lettuce. There was a nice mix of flavor in the chicken and lamb. For the price (8.99) you get a nice amount of food without breaking the bank. Overall I would visit again. My experience was great.

Yelp
0 Stars. My last order was absolutely DISGUSTING Complete GARBAGE. Tasted like WET TRASH & Hot dog water. Halal truck used to serve good tasting food, but now they just slap together the food, & slop it onto the Togo plate. They literally have chosen quantity over quality, it's not even good any more, at all. You open your tray & food is just all over the place, like they put it in a zip lock bag & shook it around before plopping it onto the tray. They don't even make the food fresh no more. They just keep a pile sitting in a corner & serve that like it's fresh. They over saturate the whole meal with soggy watered down peppers & onions. You can't even take a bite of the meat without a mouth full of oversized, overcooked flavorless peppers they use as filler, literally made me gag. Almost threw up after a few bites. Had to close my eyes & force feed myself to try to eat it before I got entirely gagged & disgusted, & threw the damn near full whole tray in garbage. Considering how disgusting my meal was, has me thinking, how clean even is the grill the food is prepared on...?! taking a look at the mud water inside the drink cooler, tells me everything I need to know. Complete waste of money, NEVER ordering again. Equivalent to eating soggy bread. This truck has been like this for years now, I've spared them this review, they need to do BETTER. The halal cart is supposed to be staple in the city.

Yelp
Don't serve on a pita if they are old and dry. My falafels were good but pita was so dry that it was cracking dropping all the content.

Yelp
Food Had HAIR, WTF Looking forward to trying it but it had hair all in it. Wish I could've tried it

Michelle M.

Yelp
Tiny diced pieces of meat; not sure if there was any lamb in it. Lettuce and nondescript sauce made for a flavorless "sandwich"; no other ingredients. Not worth the calories or money. Threw it out after a few bites.

Yelp
We were walking by the area and stumbled upon this food truck. I have to say, this food truck is so good. I got the chicken and lamb combo - twice! Very flavorful. The food comes out fast after you order. It is also really affordable for the portions you get. I highly recommend!

Yelp
The Staff and the food is amazing come get yourself some!!! Chicken salad well done with extra white sauce and the chicken lambo combo are my fav, must have's!!!!! The view and ambiance is nice so you can enjoy good food and the vibe

Yelp
Came here as I was in the area and haven't had halal in years. My husband and I split the chicken/lamb combo and a falafel pita. The total came to $13. Cash only. The food was lukewarm but otherwise the flavors tasted good. I love whatever white sauce is on these halal dishes. I wish there were more falafel in the wrap, I got some bites of just pita because there wasn't enough falafel inside. All in all, a good experience, I will come back if in the area.
google avatar

Aida E.

Yelp
The food is so good, like when I tell you I was shocked by how good the chicken was. They didn't take long to prepare the food and were very kind when ordering. Love that it's located in the heart of the city and everyone around is somewhat interacting and just very nice.

Yelp
A convenient place to grab Halal if you are in uptown. Not too much of this kind of food in Charlotte, so it was nice to experience falafel and chicken on rice while strolling the avenue. It's cash only, but ATM's abound nearby so you won't go hungry. Our order arrived within 10 minutes, 1 chicken and rice plus a falafel. The price is definitely right with this, as even with a water this was less than $15, however the food was definitely less than hot, maybe lukewarm at best. Also the chicken and rice was definitely more rice than chicken, but hey, it's only $7. I quite enjoyed the falafel, which was flavorful and the pita was tasty as well(I also may have added some of the chicken and rice to the falafel about halfway through). All in all a nice and cheap meal if you're in uptown and want something different besides a burger or chipotle.

Yelp
Pretty great Street food. Lamb was solid. Quick, affordable, and tastes great. What more could you want?

Yelp
This was a Hail Mary to find food after a night out. The diners were beyond full, but this place came in clutch. The lamp over rice was delicious and so was the little side salad that came with it. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT. Lastly it is cash only.
google avatar

Nadir Z.

Yelp
Love this place the food was consistent. The sandwich was amazing every time I'm in the area. I'm always stopping by.

Yelp
I flew in really late at night and saw that this was one of the only food establishments that was open. I got the mixed platter with white and hot sauce, and, wow! That platter was delicious. You really couldn't beat the price for dinner. It was $7.99 for the lamb and chicken over rice. I wish I had the stomach room to eat two of those. I will definitely come back for a late night by or even lunch or dinner. It's really nice that it's also open until really late at night.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Service on point! But booms and addicts are there trying to get your dollars!

Yelp
This place hit so close to home. It's a food stall parked on the side on the street. During my visit to NYC I tasted my fair share of halal carts and this caused those beautiful memories to resurface. Cheap and filling, I didn't think I'd ever see another halal cart outside of NYC but here it is! As the Gen Z's say nowadays - the food was bussin' bussin'. It was slappin' slappin'. For 8 bucks it can't get any better. I had the chicken and lamb over rice with with red and white sauce drizzled over on top. Excellent flavors all around with the right amount of spices and heat level to take it over the top! I enjoyed every bite. If you want both the spicy red sauce and white sauce you have to tell them otherwise they'll just drizzle only the white sauce by default. For all you spicy food lovers, the red sauce is a must and changes the ball game - get it! Keep in mind this place is cash only so make sure to have some. Overall, come here for some awesome bussin' bussin' halal food! Highly recommended!

Yelp
As a former New Yorker, I know my Halal Food Carts. Halal Food Cart, this is not. Not sure what the hell this is supposed to be, but it's terrible. It's basically just chunked of chicken and philly steak mixed together. Their white sauce is ranch dressing. Don't bother asking for extra meat and paying for it, you won't get it. Lastly, I asked for no rice and extra salad. Pretty easy-they messed that up, too. Oh, and where's the hot sauce? This place isn't worth a dollar, let alone the nearly $30 I paid with the crazy delivery fee ($8.95). It's a disgrace to halal food carts across the country.
google avatar

Yelp
So good! My boyfriend and I always get gyros from this place and they are always top tier. It's even better reheated the next day. Definitely recommend!

Ava E.

Yelp
Lived in clt my whole life and this is one of my favorites ever! It's always there for me when I need it, especially late nights. The food is always A+.

Yelp
The best early or late foot bite in town! These guys are great! Try the mix combo with extra spice! #mycltvan

Yelp
Cash only This remainder is to hit then character limit. Food is good, but cash only makes it tough

Pallavi N.

Yelp
Always tastes the same !! Love their chicken over rice and Lamb over rice combos Best halal truck in Charlotte
google avatar

Christin N.

Yelp
Yes Yes and ANOTHER YES!!!! I was so excited when we got one in Charlotte as they are on every block in Manhattan! So delicious MUST GET WHITE AND RED SAUCE ALL OVER THE TOP. Just go lighter on red sauce if you don't like to much spiciness! YUM! The chicken and Rice is THE GO TO!
google avatar

Horace T.

Yelp
Food looked like mush. But it was good with all the slop of sauce they threw on. Open late as well which is a plus
google avatar

Ashleigh B.

Yelp
My mom regularly visits this truck. She orders for me a got me the Chicken over Rice with white sauce. I wasn't super impressed but it was okay. My mom said the owner didn't make it how he usually does this night. I'm not sure if I'll be back.

Yelp
Halal Food Cart is very common in New York and when we saw the cart in Charlotte we definitely tried the food from Halal Food Cart. From the menu we ordered Chicken Over Rice with Falafel. Get the cash ready as they don't take credit cards. We got the order in 5 minutes and the order was hot and fresh. The food was amazing and delicious. We really loved the food. We all loved the food and we will try again.

A S.

Yelp
Good was good. There was a language barrier, had a hard time understanding the guy taking orders. Homeless guy was standing right in front of cart begging for $.
google avatar

Yelp
Street food can be risky. It could either send you to a visit to the bathroom or tantalize your tastebuds with glee. I was grateful that my experience at the Halal Food Cart was the later. I absolutely loved my lamb and rice dish. Best of all, I was able to enjoy a healthy lunch for under $10.
google avatar

Lauren V.

Yelp
Best late-night bite in uptown, hands down! Expect a line at prime times, but it's absolutely worth the wait. I ordered lamb over rice- perfectly seasoned and HUGE portion sizes for the money IMO.

Jay S.

Yelp
We had the Philly cheese steak and chicken and lamb over rice. It has such a great flavor. For sure in my top 3 of food since moving to the Charlotte area. We will definitely support this small business. There was one woman working the truck and she was amazing. 10 out of 10.
google avatar

Cayla M.

Yelp
SO GOOOD and lots of food. Def recommend and will get it again. My only complaint is that I've ordered for drop-off multiple times, and they've forgotten sauces multiple times. I've started calling my door dasher to confirm....
google avatar

Raeneice R.

Yelp
If today was my 1st time, I would say avoid this truck.....but today's tip is: don't waste your money on the falafel salad & check your order before you leave. You see, pre-pandemic, I frequented the truck very often and got the falafel salad. This time the falafel was bland & flavorless, the salad had big chunks of lettuce, I requested the dressing & Diablo sauce on the side (no sauce was packed & the salad is swimming in dressing), the posted price was wrong (this was not worth $8), and they gave me a spoon.......now to figure out what's for lunch, AGAIN!!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
It's the HALAL FOR MEEEE!!! No but seriously, whether it's 4 am or 4pm the food is guaranteed to be great! The chicken and rice is amazing. Always hot and fresh. The chicken is well seasoned and honestly taste like nothing else in the area. Here's 5 takeaways from my latest visit 1)Cash only! Make sure you grab at least $10 from the bank, there's no cash app, debit, square or Apple Pay here. CASH ONLY 2) Order extra white sauce and hot sauce on the side.-- the spice level on the hot sauce may vary, and you'll need the extra sauce for the leftovers. 3) Pita please- you can request a side of pita bread with your order as well! 4) Just wait- I promise it won't take that long and it'll be well worth it! 5) be careful where you park. Like not at all on Trade St. Hope you enjoy Here's to Yummy Eats, With love, T

Yelp
Always the best Mediterranean food! I have tried many different places for this same type food and there's taste the best to me. I eat here when I'm in CLT! Almost every time!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
I finally made it to this truck. Usually the lines are very long so I never stop here and it's cash only and I never have cash. But on the past Friday I went to lunch at 11am andddd I had cash on me. Everything on the menu was $8 and there wasn't a line at all so I went and ordered the spicy lamb and chicken combo. Order was ready super fast too. For $8 it had a very nice serving size. I gotta come back and try other menu items now.
google avatar

Yelp
There are some places in Charlotte that absolutely live up to the hype and this is one of them. I ventured here recently for the first time, not totally sure what to try. There were some people behind me who I overheard saying they always get the same thing. I asked what they get and they suggested the chicken and lamb but that I really couldn't go wrong with lunch numbers 1 through 3. Keeping that in mind, I went with #1 (chicken) with spicy sauce on the side and a small pita. My meal was $6 and I could not believe the amount of food in my order! I got three meals out of it (shout out to the folks who can eat the entire meal in one sitting!). I will definitely be a repeat customer!
google avatar

erica z.

Yelp
These guys are great! They're fast and the food is DELICIOUS. we always get the chicken and rice and it's so good! Super affordable too. Definitely check it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! I have wanted to the Philly Cheese Steak, they were out, so I got the Chicken Cheese Steak.... spot on! Must have, if you are you talking by food!
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
You might walk right past this little food cart uptown regularly without stopping and that would be a mistake. I got the chicken and lamb combo which comes over rice with a cream sauce. We forgot to ask for hot sauce on it so they gave it to us on the side. It was so delicious! The hot sauce added a good amount of heat and flavor. It's also a good amount of food for only $6. Note that it's cash only so come prepared or find an atm nearby uptown. This little cart is serving up delicious, cheap food. Stop by next time you're walking past.
google avatar

Brittnee P.

Yelp
Didn't get to try it since they got my sandwich wrong. Ordered a Philly with no veggies and they didn't take anything off. Thanks a lot.

Yelp
Food Truck to the rescue!!! Whenever I'm in need of a good cheap lunch while downtown I go to the Halal Food Truck. I always get the lamb and chicken combo with spicy sauce. I'm not sure what it is but there has to be crack in the food cause it's addictive. The tangy white sauce mixed with the red sauce and with the finely chopped meat over the rice is mind blowing. If you don't get in line early you will have a wait. They only accept cash and the girl taking orders is very frank. It's just her personality. They get your order placed and your food to you in a timely orderly fashion. I think the quality and flavor of their food is better than some restaurants in the area. Also you can't find a more filling meal for that price downtown. Mi Barrio's Halal Cart 101 N Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202
