Where to Eat Near Petco Park - Eater San Diego

"Head to this 1900s-era house before and after Petco Park events for the bird’s-eye view from the second-floor patio and to see what creative offerings the brewmasters have on tap. The menu includes shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. There’s a good selection of meat-free entrées here too such as golden fried goat cheese with sweet chili-soy glaze and scallions." - Darlene Horn

Google
A Irish inspired local brewery offering up a great selection of beer and food. I got the pretzel bites, while the guy next to me got the sausage rolls, which we ended up sharing. Any place that can do the little things right definitely gets the big things right, and these were simply amazing. Everything here would perfectly cooked to the point that there was a nice crunch on the outside and a soft interior with a nice Dijon mustard and cheese dip made in house. It's probably the best bites I've had at a bar in a really long time. The staff here is amazing, and the bar offers you a real rustic, almost dive bar like vibe. Staff here were very nice and helpful. They also offer game day deals along with happy hours during the week. Strongly reccomened checking this place out!

Google
There are many craft places in San Diego, but this felt like home. Great beer, but more importantly great staff and regulars. Felt like a proper pub, and that's from a Brit. Great stuff, don't change a thing.

Google
Their beer was wonderful but don't order any food anymore, they serve microwave-cocked meals only. They used to serve great but, not anymore. If you rush to eat within 5 minutes after ordering, go for it.

Google
This is a great spot that’s downtown but doesn’t feel like it. They have excellent cocktails, try the smoke and mirrors. The service is also really good. If you’re downtown and want a place that isn’t crazy with good service I definitely suggest Half Door.

Google
The hubs & I found ourselves in San Diego ready for an early lunch. Half Door Brewing Co. Just happened to be across the street from us, so we gave it a try. The Fish & Chips was amazing & the jalapeño tartar sauce with the vinegar chips put it over the top. I got the fried goat cheese appetizer with the white truffle flatbread as my main. I couldn't decide which I loved more and just kept alternating bites. Absolutely LOVED both! As an IPA girl, I loved both that I tried. Yto, our bartender was super friendly & we enjoyed chatting with him. If you're in the neighborhood, I'd definitely recommend this place!

Google
Great location right by the ball park. This is an Irish pub feel brewery. Converted an old house into a two story brewery. Lots of seating options inside and out. Staff were very friendly and the beer and food were great. Had non-alcoholic beer options which was appreciated.

Google
💖 They have SORRY! I’m sold. While it’s a brewery they also have great cocktails 🍸 Super cute atmosphere in an old Victorian style house. Lots of outdoor seating, and great service!

Google
Overall great experience at Half Door Brewing Company. Food was delicious, service was great (however not crazy busy) and the environment was fun. I had an Irish mule to drink which was AMAZING. We only got apps and sharing plates...the entrees looked delicious however. We enjoyed the BBQ Flatbread & pretzel bites the most.

Yelp
What an absolute gem!! Was in town for a conference and Half Door was highly recommended by a friend who visits San Diego often. The beer was fantastic. My favorite was the sour, it completely blew my mind and my palate! We decided to let the waiter choose our flights for us and it was such a fun and surprising choice. He hit the nail on the head! It's a cute little spot, it was a Sunday night so it was not crowded at all. We had a charcuterie board, I had some soup of the day which was a veggie soup and it was delicious. Everything felt like comfort; the food, the beer, the environment. It is a permanent stop for me now!

Yelp
My friends and I wanted to enjoy the amazing weather, so we were on the search of an outdoor rooftop bar around the Gaslamp District. Unfortunately there were none open around 4pm on a weekday, but one of my friends remembered that Half Door Brewing Company (HDBC) had a great upstairs, outdoor deck. We got to HDBC around 4:15pm and requested to sit outside on the 2nd floor. Can't beat the vibe and scenic views of downtown, including Petco Park. It was exactly what we were looking for. We made it in time for happy hour, and we certainly took advantage of the happy hour food and well cocktails. The food was good. We ordered the pretzel bites, truffle fries, and mac and cheese. The pretzel bites were the best of the 3, and they were quite unique. They were like pretzel biscuits with a soft, doughy crumb. The dipping cheese and mustard were excellent. Lastly, service was excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive, and our food and drinks came out in a timely manner.

Yelp
Things I loved: super dog friendly, couches, outdoor area, wine. Things that need working on: the charcuterie board sucked. Cheese was bland. Serve didn't even know what type of cheese it was. The cocktail was super "juicy." Tasted more like a capri sun than a cocktail. Things I can't comment on: didn't try the beer or any other food. We were turned off and left after first round.

Yelp
On a Tuesday, I visited this brewery with a friend and his son. Since there wasn't a Padres game, we were fortunate to find plenty of available tables. The place is packed during game day. The staff greeted us promptly and seated us on the second-floor patio, as we requested. We were told it's a mixture of brewery and an Irish pub. They have first floor and second floor seating area. Throughout our visit, the service was excellent, and our server checked in on us frequently. I enjoyed their Hoban House IPA--a refreshing choice. We also ordered a cheeseburger with fries for my friend's son, and the fries were both fresh and delicious. I'll definitely return, especially since it's conveniently close to my workplace.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite breweries while visiting the San Diego area! I loved the building and decorations. It had really nice laid back vibes (and they had great music playing). We visited during the early afternoon on a weekday so it was nearly empty. We sat on the second floor, near the outdoor seating. I got the Media Puerta and would get this again. We also shared an order of pretzel bites. The pretzel bites were really good and I would describe them as almost small bread buns. They were very soft and buttery. I would return!

Yelp
Awesome bar by the Padres stadium! After a long day at a conference, my colleagues and I made our way to get some drinks, appetizers, and bit of food. It's an old style house that's been refurbished with great bar seating indoor with classy architecture and quaint outdoor seating. We sat on their terrace top and had great vibes with sun, breeze, and the city view. Our server, Dominic, was awesome with lots of energy and attention to our dining experience. We started off with pretzel bites, and they were salted to perfection. My colleagues just got drinks but I was starving for some solid food. I ordered a medium rare goat cheese burger, and I was so happy with the portion size. Great flavors of goat cheese, delicious meat, onion jam, and garlic aioli. So massive that I had to cut the burger in half. Very filling and I would definitely order again. Loved the experience of this place, and I definitely recommend that you too as well!

Yelp
Half Door Brewing is a home run when it comes to being close to Petco Park! I mean, where else can you sip on a refreshing drink while being just a hop, skip, and a jump away from catching a ball game? And let me tell you, their selection of brews is as vast as the outfield at Petco. But the real MVP here is the truffle burger. It's like hitting a grand slam with every bite! The combination of juicy beef, decadent truffle aioli, and perfectly melted cheese is a taste sensation that will have you cheering like you just won the World Series. So next time you're in the mood for some great beer, delicious food, and a side of baseball, head on over to Half Door Brewing. You'll feel like a winner, even if the Padres strike out.

Yelp
Our recent trip did not disappoint! Afternoon lunch on the upstairs patio! Great food and really enjoyed our server Steve! Goat cheese burger, Fish n Chips, and local beer is always a great choice! The slaw was great! Not creamy at all.

Yelp
This place was alright. My friend really talked up the food and ambiance, but I didn't find it to be anything special. I would not recommend the mezcal marg, the flavor profile was a weird mix. The fried goat cheese was unique and delicious, and the flatbread was decent, but I wasn't a huge fan of the HDBC salad and ended up tossing most of it. The place was dead on a home game night for the Padres, so service was fast. Overall, it was meh. I'd rather try somewhere new than revisit.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
This is a nice brewery that is not smack dab in the middle of the craziness. There are two levels and the upstairs is a lot quieter and gives a view of the downstairs bar. You can also sit out on the deck and people watch or enjoy the view. Give it a try and you will enjoy yourself.

Yelp
Spicy margarita girl Isabel is literally the best! Her drinks are 10/10 She's so kind and funny! I truly appreciate the service

Yelp
Still one of my favorite local places to grab a drink and food! Lots of beer choices and unique craft cocktails. Service is always friendly and you get that local vibe which is great in such a touristy area. I love the chicken bowl and Shepherds pie when I want comfort food. Always enough for 2 meals for me!

Yelp
This place is down the street from my law school so when I'm in town I love to visit them for a nice cold beer and some bites! My husband and I shared some scotch eggs and ahi tuna tacos. They were out of the aioli that goes on the tacos, but the chef was innovative and gave us other sauces to try! So yummy! I like that this brewery has different seating options. Inside they have their standard bar with also seating that faces the street and cozy little nooks for two. Outside on the main level there is seating or you can take the stairs to the second floor too. Great spot for a first date or a cozy catch up session with a friend!

Yelp
QUICKIE REVIEW Great spot to swing by before the game. FOOD This is what I tried: Bangers N Mash Scotch Egg Irish Beer First introduction to bangers & mash and it was a good one. It was seasoned well and flavor. Scotch egg was a bit more of an interesting taste but the sauce that came with it made it for me. PARKING No, street parking. SERVICE Good. Waitress took care of us in a timely manner and nice. PRICE Less than $50 for two. Came during game day so took advantage of the specials they had. TIP/OTHER THOUGHTS They had regular table seating but also had sofa seating, which is where I ate. It made for a cool, different experience.
google avatar

T C.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere. Service is good. At this time, we ate only French fries but will back again and want to enjoy their food. Close to Petco Park. Good for before game and during game!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday afternoon. Tyler was the bartender and he was so nice. You know how bartenders sometimes talk too much and you wish they stopped talking... Tyler was so opposite, I think he wished we stopped bothering him haha. The drinks were amazing, he was so nice to chat with while we both had drinks, we got to try very interesting beers and whiskeys and their housemade seltzer was pretty good! We usually go to little food hall for drinks and glad to say we have a new bar to come visit when we go To San Diego now.
google avatar

Jesse R.

Yelp
Ambiance is pretty good, but you have to go when there's no game going or else everyone wants to be there. Not saying it's a bad place just that because it's so good it gets everyone and their mom right after the game
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I have come here I have had a positive experience. Not only is this a perfect spot for pre-gaming before a ballgame but also for everything in between. Besides being a good location near Petco park, I believe it used to be an old house and there is a nice outdoor seating area as well as an upstairs with a homey feel. Each occasion, our servers have been friendly and seem to enjoy working here. They also are quick with bringing out food and drinks. On this occasion I tried the "Smoke & Mirrors" cocktail with mezcal. As a mezcal lover, I really enjoyed this drink and think the pineapple and coconut flavors went very well together. Probably one of my new favorite cocktails here. For food, I went with the trusty and tasty pretzel bites that comes with dipping sides of cheese and a grey poupon-like mustard. The truffle fries are also another good option!

Yelp
Great brewery. Their variety of beer was impressive and they were still all pretty good. I got a flight and honestly enjoyed all the beers. Quaint little place with cozy outdoor seating, not a ton of space but it wasn't a problem. They had some outdoor heaters on the patio, too. No issues with service and the food was actually really good. I got a fancy version of the classic KFC bowl and it was to die for. Also tried the pretzel bites - HIGHLY recommend those. No complaints, would def go again for brunch!
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Ate dinner and tried beers here as walk-ins on a Saturday evening. We didn't even have to wait for a table! Service was quick, friendly, and efficient. It has a basic brewery atmosphere. The food was really good and as a vegetarian, I was pleased to have good options. I got a salad which was delicious and filling. We tried the goat cheese balls and they were yummy but a bit much - very filling. Lots of beers and even a seltzer. I would have liked to see multiple seltzers or a cider but otherwise no complaints.

Yelp
Half Door Brewing is located in East Village San Diego on the corner of Island Ave. From the looks of the outside, you might think it is a house, but in reality, it is a lovely brewery serving up some of the finest beers offered. We dropped by after the San Diego Half Marathon for some of the specials they were offering the runners who participated in the race. The layout of the place offers patio dining and also has chairs inside as well as upstairs, over looking the streets with heaters. We were seated promptly and were given glasses of water and menus to order by our nice waitress. We went ahead and ordered the specials they were offering and opted for the Puerta Mexican Lager and the avocado toast. The beer was light and crisp straight from the tap and was quite refreshing. The avocado toast was presented beautifully on a nice clean white plate with firmly toasted thick bread and green ripe mashed avocados laying beneath tomatoes that had a balsamic reduction and the dish had chiffonade basil as a garnish. This was my first time having a balsamic reduction drizzled over my avocado toast, and it went perfectly well together. It was a nice place to dine in and catch up with friends over good food and drinks. I'll definitely be back and try more of the beers and food offered here. Thank you, Half Door Brewing, for serving us and creating specials for the runners on that certain day.

Yelp
Come here for the beer and eat somewhere else. Our server had no idea of the beer or the food. I would ask for recommendations and finally he got another employee to come and answer our questions. That should have told me not to eat here. When your servers have not had your food and say it is a bit pricey for me. The beer is good. I enjoyed my beer, but there are so many great beer place with good food. I won't come back here again or recommend to anyone else. I got the pork belly and it lacked flavor and for the price, not worth it.

Yelp
My rating is between a 3 and a 4 only because of inconsistent execution and the price for brunch. I've lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years and really like to come here, they have a great menu focused on British cuisine. The stars of the menu: Salmon (meal or salad), sausage roll bites, fish and chips, Mac and Cheese and their vege stir fry. I really like the variety of their menu, there is something for everyone and diversity for your mood or appetite. If you love pasties from London, then you must get the sausage bites! It's by far my favorite item. My second favorite dish is the salmon salad- salmon is cooked well, not dry with excellent flavor. All of their salads are great btw. Service is pretty good, sometimes you have to look for your server here though. But everyone is friendly and helpful. The decor is unique and interesting. It's an old house converted to a restaurant with cool outdoor seating on both the first and second floors. Inside you have a vintage style decor with cool wallpaper and a two story open bar that is something to see. If they are busy, the food is executed well, if they are slow not so much (you think the opposite would be true). I've had a few meals that just weren't up to par. Brunch- well, I just don't think breakfast for two people should cost $60, plain and simple. You just don't get value for the money. It's also a small brunch menu, not a lot of choices. However, this a place worth coming to- cool ambiance and steps away from Petco park, or a reasonable walk to the Rady shell. A nice option outside of the gaslamp. If you come, you must try the sausage bites! They are so good.

Yelp
Ok. We came here for my friends birthday and had the best experience. Our server made it that much better. Carrigan was on top of it .There was a party of 9 and we all know how those can be. He was so on top of everything and was in such a good mood and not once did he complain or so anything. The food was amazing!

Antonio M.

Yelp
Restaurant 9/10 Honestly just wow, I haven't even gotten the rest of my food when starting this review but posting when I'm done here... absolutely amazing place. I would give 6 stars if I can. The food is so Homey and the vibes are very comforting. The service is super friendly and kind. I've been to many pubs and bars and restaurants and this has to be one of the better ones I've been to. -------------------------------- If I could, I'd be in a loop of truffle fry eating Fluffy bread in the sandwich. Solid 6/10 sandwich. Good but not amazing. Mostly because it is a simple tasting sandwich.

Chris W.

Yelp
What a cool, quirky brewery. Good beers, friendly staff. I had one of the best scotch eggs I've had in my whole life here.

Mike B.

Yelp
Food was spot on (goat cheese burger). Beer was cold and good. Service was awesome. Only down side, wanted to eat outside but the smell of urine was rough. Will go again.

Joe G.

Yelp
Cool venue and good beer. Unfortunately the service is poor and the bartenders are very rude. Luckily there's better options in the same area
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Half Door few times now. Great spot and so close to Petco park. Nice selection of draft beers and food.
google avatar

Yelp
Half Door Brewing really deteriorated in quality over the pandemic. I visited Half Door pre-pandemic, and everything (food and beer) was terrific. In February 2023, the food was not good. Food: had the fish and chips. Not good. Frozen, low grade cod severely over fried. Beer: Good craft beer Service: decent service but all the staff we interacted with lacked knowledge of the food offered by Half Door and beer in general Overall cleanliness: average
google avatar

Justine N.

Yelp
They didn't have the beers on the menu posted online anymore but the appetizers were delicious, the beers we ended up ordering were good and the server was awesome!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
A little cozy house in the middle of the city! Really good beer, speedy service, and a super fun menu! Lots of beer options as well as wine and cocktails. We got the fried goat cheese balls with our beers and they are 10/10!
google avatar

Yelp
Great brewery in a prime location (esp for sports-lovers). Good for groups and people visiting SD! The baseball stadium is walking distance and right in your view if you're sitting outside. I came here for a happy hour/dinner after work with about 10 coworkers. It was a Thursday so it wasn't busy at all, even while there was a game on. We were able to hear the stadium cheering - that's how close we were, and they also had the game playing on TV so we were able to watch. The beer is crisp, tasty, and refreshing. I'm more a cocktail person though and my waitor was able to recommend a cocktail that was no longer on the menu but is now sort of a secret menu item. It was delicious! Our waitor was very attentive, great for our large group. The food is more upscale than your typical bar food. I had the pork belly and it was so good! Highly recommend that.
google avatar

April M.

Yelp
Food was excellent! Had the HDBC Burger with truffle fries. Delicious. If you are in San Diegk, totally worth the stop. Drinks were great and server was attentive. If it's a nice night, get the balcony
google avatar

Pam F.

Yelp
First time at this place and loved it. Arrived early for dinner before concert at Petco. Immediately seated at a table for our 8 friends. House Chardonnay was great and generous pour. Fish and Chips large portion and homemade fries delicious. Sausage rolls were delicious as well. Our server "Lee" was attentive and delightful and did her best as the place became packed. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I thought with the high marks oh Yelp we were in for some great beer and food but I gotta say it was pretty pedestrian all the way around. Cool porch where you can see the Padres stadium from but that was probably the highlight. Beer was mediore at best and the burger looked and tasted like a frozen patty. So many cool places in the area, wish we had mad a different choice!
google avatar

Tom F.

Yelp
Very disorganized. Out of most beers. Menu looks great but couldn't say based on the experience at bar.

Yumi Y.

Yelp
The Chicken bowl was filled with gravy and it was too much. I could not taste chicken at all. The stir fry vegetables are little too sweet and soggy. Salmon on the salad was not very fresh.
google avatar

Polly M.

Yelp
The happy hour drinks were served with a smile and good. The food was well prepared quickly. The fried goat cheese was like nothing I've ever eaten ... but I will again!
google avatar

Troy T.

Yelp
Got in here on a Wednesday night to check out the beers. Tried a few of the hazy ipas and some of the Belgian styles. The Belgian selections are spot on, I tried a strong golden ale that really concealed the 10.5% ABV. The Father Ted Belgian blonds ale drank a lot like a saison with a good bit of Esther. The Hazy beers were surprisingly clear with nice hop notes but not filling. Bartender is super cool, vibe was positive, this beer would go great on game day but likely not get me here regularly.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty chill place even during a Comic-Con Saturday night. Cozy outdoor seating with its countryside house front patio layout. My sister and I just shared some appetizers as dinner and our favorite one that we tried was the scotch egg. Lightly crispy on the outside and the Irish sausage surrounding the hard-boiled egg was tasty and not overly salty nor greasy. We also ordered the salted pretzel bites since it seemed like they were popular based on the many pics of them uploaded here. They were alright; I expected dense chewy soft pretzel goodness but they were pretty much kinda-stale mini dinner rolls with a slight crispy exterior. I think people really like them though because they do have the pretzel salt on top. Nothing amazing about the BBQ chicken flatbread especially with the BBQ sauce tasting like a cheap grocery store one. I tried the Hoban House IPA. I'm no beer connoisseur and can't really fully describe the taste well, but if you like grapefruit you'll enjoy this one because its flavor is really prominent lol. Place seemed understaffed because although our server was super friendly, she came to the table only a few times and it took her a while to get the check for us after we requested it. Overall not a bad spot if you want to avoid wild Gaslamp on a Saturday night but still want decent food/beer.
google avatar

Meagan E.

Yelp
Amazing service. Multiple staff popped by ti say hello or check on us. The location is cool right in view of the Padres stadium and they have HH on non-home game days. The drink menu is broad with both beers, wines, & a few cocktails. The food sadly didn't hit the spot. The truffle fries had pre-shredded parmesan that as a result didn't melt properly and consequently seemed old; use freshly grated yall! And scallions don't compliment truffle at all. The pretzel bites were made of either old or very poorly made dough, they tasted odd and or old. The cheese dip couldn't save them. Well my wine was good and the patio was what my pup needed while we grabbed a cold one. Cheers!

Yelp
Welcoming, friendly, comfort place to enjoy a afternoon alone or with friends. Sure it gets wicked busy before games and weekends. But, mid afternoon on a Monday was quiet. Great patio. Old fashion. If you're looking for new, glitz and glamour - this isnt it. If you're look for real good and sincere hospitality- this is it Will definitely be back BTW: double hazy ipa

Robert moreno ..

Yelp
The service, food and beer were good. A great view of Petco park. But my girlfriend and I felt deceive by the signage. We went because of their A frame announcement saying "Happy Hour from 4-6" only to find out it does not apply during Padre's home game. Disappointed in the decite and the servers didn't say a thing about that twisted. Probably won't dine there again.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Good music and tasty drinks. Near the 808 venue.

Efren M.

Yelp
This place has really good beer and good food. Our party had the scotch egg which I highly recommend, the house salad and the bangers and mash. Great views of downtown from the balcony in a chilly day, good thing they have outdoor heaters.
google avatar

Swan L.

Yelp
I really like coming to Half Door Brewing! It has a homey feel with a large patio and great upper floor as well. They serve up decent cocktails and tasty comfort food. Note: no happy hour specials on Padres game days given their proximity to the park. They have plenty of TVs inside as well to enjoy the game there. My favorite drink is the Tres Commas which has the smokiness from the mezcal balanced nicely with some sweetness. The shepherds pie was also so hearty, rich, and comforting. Loved the cheesy crusted mashed potato on top!
google avatar

Yelp
Half Door Brewing is located in a charming building in the Gaslamp District. The first thing that stands out to me is the different seating areas they have -- a small patio for outdoor seating, a fun area with couches and books (for a cozy lounge vibe), and a few different dining sections. I came as part of a large group -- we were seated in a small area upstairs. It was private and quaint. Although it's a brewery, I didn't try any of their beer so I can't say if it's good! The menu is fairly straightforward and very much UK forward (think fish and chips, burgers, salmon, bangers and mash, etc.). I ordered the fish and chips, which were standard. Overall, we had a nice time and our waitress was fantastic.
google avatar

Lauren O.

Yelp
Really great service and friendly staff. The beer was good! I heard other customers there raving about the weekend brunch! I just got beer which was really good! And a sausage flat bread, and some pretzel puffs! The sausage flat bread had a lot of flavor, the pretzel balls were a little different and more puffy than what I'm used to but I still liked them and they had a big portion with cheese and mustard. While it's dark inside, the vibes outside on the patio are so nice! Love that ambiance. It's right downtown and the view of petco park while your sipping can't be beat. I want to go back and try fish and chips that one guy kept raving about too, that and some type of breakfast hash only served on The Weeknd.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Good beer selection and solid food to pair it with. The cocktails were actually well crafted too, I'd definitely order the Bedroom Talk again! Food was tasty, though maybe a tad greasy but what do you expect from a brewery... the breakfast burger was very hearty, and we also enjoyed the white truffle flatbread and sausage bites. Hard pass on the scotch egg though, super over-fried and very little taste. Outdoor seating upstairs and downstairs.
