I love half fast. When I was going to school at CU, I'd eat half fast once or twice a week. In the decades since, I always try to get a sandwich there whenever I'm in town.
The atmosphere is pretty chill. You order at the cashier, they give you a card, and you grab a table. Staff is always friendly and super helpful. Plenty of indoor space with a few TVs, and a fenced-in outdoor area that can accommodate about 20 people. The bathrooms are limited capacity and not the best, but usable and get the job done. Complimentary water cups available at the soda fountain.
For drinks they have the standard soda fountain and selection of local beers and specialty bottled drinks. Half fast is also known for their hard liquor drinks. Not going to be the best top-shelf, but very strong, sweet, and delicious. You can get them in pitchers too, with fun names. My favorites are the slurricane and the strong island iced tea.
Obviously gets subs at half fast subs. Maybe it's only because of the name, but I always feel like they really are half fast. I have my own standard rotation of sandwiches that I love: torpedo, dagwood's dream, ba-donk-a-donk, the Lou, the gobbler, and baba booey. If you like some pickled spicy goodness, then go for ba-donk-a-donk, which has chicago hot peppers in it. If you want something salty and Italian, then torpedo. The olives in it just send it over the top for me. Want a bit of variety? Dagwood's dream, baba booey, or the half fast sub. Or just explore the menu over many, many visits like I did. Each sandwich is described pretty well on their massive menu board.
And finally, sandwiches come on white or wheat (I always go for white), and they come in 4", 7", or 14". For the longest time it was just 7" and 14", but I guess they decided to include 4" because I guess sometimes people just want a mini half fast snack. Nothing wrong with that! Larger sizes, as one would expect, are progressively better value per dollar.
