The Best Restaurants in Boulder, College Edition

"A staple on the Hill for decades, this sandwich shop–meets–laid-back tavern claims to have the largest selection of sandwiches in America, with more than 100 combinations to choose from — take the Dagwood’s Dream with pastrami, roast beef, ham, provolone, grilled onions, horseradish, lettuce, and tomatoes; the Albuquerque Turkey with turkey, jalapeños, green chile, Fritos, pepper jack, bacon, and Sriracha aioli; and the Crab California with imitation crab, cream cheese, guacamole, salsa, and sprouts as just a few examples. Went to this awesome sub sandwich restaurant for lunch while University of Colorado Boulder was on summer break. An amazing list of menu choices (with or without proteins) and three sizes of subs available: 4-, 7-, and 14-inches. Laid back atmosphere and friendly service. Lots of seats and tables inside as well as outside patio, but parking is on-street and can be a little tough to find. You won't be disappointed and very highly recommended!

Google
Have gotten takeout here twice now and both times everything was just above average. The sandwiches are all pretty good, but I think there are other sandwich shops around that are a bit better. Also, some of the staff is awesome, but others seem a bit rude and aloof at times. I am gonna try again but get different sandwiches in the hopes that they’ll win me over eventually.

Google
Awesome 7” and 14” subs, using very fresh veggies and meats! Definitely the best sub we have ever had! Reasonable prices, a TON of specialty subs choose from, a really big variety of specialty sodas and drinks, healthy drinks, energy drinks, and brews. Indoor and outdoor seating. Don’t let the long lines scare you from staying, they were SUPER fast!

Google
Great place for a quick meal. This last time around it took a while to get our sandwiches. We were pre-informed about the delay though. They have ample space to sit, but it can get busy during certain times. They have outdoor seating also. Their sandwiches are definitely worth a visit.

What did we park in front of? Man, let me tell you that this spot is absolutely OUTSTANDING‼️ We grabbed a quick bite to eat before we went to the University of Colorado Buffaloes spring game. What a great choice we made‼️ The menu board was so HUGH, I didn't even get it in the whole picture‼️😆 You can get a 7 inch or a 14 inch sub warm or cold. I can tell you the service is top notch and subs were delicious‼️‼️‼️ I didn't get a beer, but I did get a pitcher of a mixed punch drink called the N'awlins Hurricane.....Woooooo Weeeeee‼️ This drink was ON POOOOOOINT‼️ I will be back in Boulder from South Florida hopefully sometime during the regular college football season. This sub shop is a blessing for University of Colorado and the surrounding community‼️ I was definitely throughly impressed‼️ #SKOBUFFS 💯💪🏾🏈🦬😁

Google
I love the vast collection they have. You can try a lot of different things. They are not very expensive and the taste is good too. They have a big place inside to sit with large TVs where you can sit back, chill and eat. Definitely recommend this place on the hill for some subs.

Google
Overall they have awesome subs, always great quality and taste great. The reason for the 4 stars, is because the lady handling where people sit seemed to have some issues. We told her when we first came in we wanted an outdoor spot to sit, which at the time there were none. Within the 30 minutes we waited in line to order our subs we saw several groups allowed to go sit in the patio. When I asked her if we could sit out there she said there were no more seats, and I said we have been here for way longer then the 2 groups you just let go sit out there, she replied “it’s a complicated system” and huffed and puffed and got all frustrated. On top of that they had groups sitting out there that were done eating since we arrived, 40 minutes later by the time we got our food they were still out there, kind of a problem when you have a while 4 tables outside that can be used. Don’t go on Saturdays around lunch, takes about 40-50 minutes to order and get your sub.

Google
Great prices on the best sub selection menu i have ever seen. $8 marg pitchers, marinated meats, patio for dogs. Love this spot.

Yelp
Bomb diggity, the tempeh is fire! Their selection is awesome, there's only two places that commit to vegetarian sandwiches with passion and this is one of them and heck, if you want a sluricanna to go they got you!

Yelp
Half fast subs was a cool little spot where I found that college students seemed to love. There wasn't any parking for this place which wasn't cool and the wait was pretty long for a single sub. They have cool promotions like showing your tattoo on certain days for a discount. I got the half-fast sub (of course) and it was mediocre but I was hungry so i chowed that thing down. I can imagine this is the spot to be as a drunk, hungover, or high college kid.

Yelp
I really REALLY wish this place was in Denver or at least closer so I can go more often. I love Half Fast. They are one of my favorite sub shops of all time. With over 100+ sub choices you cannot go wrong. We walked in pretty much right after they opened and were greeted by two very nice gentleman. They were helpful with sub suggestions. Getting me out of my comfort zone of the Godfather. I actually tried something new this last time and although I wouldn't get it again, I still enjoyed the sandwich. I am glad he talked me in to trying something different. I went with the Albuquerque turkey. The flavors were awesome, the turkey was really good but the salsa is what threw me off. It was just weird to me. otherwise, if you like spicy, this is a great sub for you. I didn't expect the kick it came with. Also, there is something to be said about getting your own pitcher of margarita or strong island iced tea. Those things are fun! I can't get enough of this place and can't wait to go back again and again.

Yelp
I love half fast. When I was going to school at CU, I'd eat half fast once or twice a week. In the decades since, I always try to get a sandwich there whenever I'm in town. The atmosphere is pretty chill. You order at the cashier, they give you a card, and you grab a table. Staff is always friendly and super helpful. Plenty of indoor space with a few TVs, and a fenced-in outdoor area that can accommodate about 20 people. The bathrooms are limited capacity and not the best, but usable and get the job done. Complimentary water cups available at the soda fountain. For drinks they have the standard soda fountain and selection of local beers and specialty bottled drinks. Half fast is also known for their hard liquor drinks. Not going to be the best top-shelf, but very strong, sweet, and delicious. You can get them in pitchers too, with fun names. My favorites are the slurricane and the strong island iced tea. Obviously gets subs at half fast subs. Maybe it's only because of the name, but I always feel like they really are half fast. I have my own standard rotation of sandwiches that I love: torpedo, dagwood's dream, ba-donk-a-donk, the Lou, the gobbler, and baba booey. If you like some pickled spicy goodness, then go for ba-donk-a-donk, which has chicago hot peppers in it. If you want something salty and Italian, then torpedo. The olives in it just send it over the top for me. Want a bit of variety? Dagwood's dream, baba booey, or the half fast sub. Or just explore the menu over many, many visits like I did. Each sandwich is described pretty well on their massive menu board. And finally, sandwiches come on white or wheat (I always go for white), and they come in 4", 7", or 14". For the longest time it was just 7" and 14", but I guess they decided to include 4" because I guess sometimes people just want a mini half fast snack. Nothing wrong with that! Larger sizes, as one would expect, are progressively better value per dollar.

Yelp
Had Half Fast Sub and Ruben today. Half fast ok with great bacon flavor but other meats were not really tasted. Ruben was a huge disappointment with practically no meat. Ruben 0 Half Fast 3

Yelp
I've been to this place many times while living in Boulder for the past eight years, and never once had it disappointed! I adore their BLT (though I can't remember the name they have for that sandwich) and it's always cooked to perfection. And their drinks are great too!
google avatar

Yelp
Subs were good but the wait time was ridiculously long. The place is chill with lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
I think half ass sub would be a better name for this place. Went on a Sunday mid afternoon and not busy. Ordered a chicken cheesesteak and it was poorly executed. Lukewarm, cheese not fully melted, bread didn't feel warm or fresh. Super mediocre. Jersey mikes are way better and they aren't great either. Will give it another try perhaps during evening time when students are around and will try on as weekday in case they used day old bread. But my pursuit of a proper sub in boulder continues.
google avatar

Jack W.

Yelp
They are staffed with 4 or 5 people during a dinner rush and they stand around doing anything but making sandwiches. I have waited upwards of an hour for a sandwich during a lunchtime rush. There is serious problem with management at this restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
Astonishing bad subs. Dried out bread with small amount of tasteless dry meats. Very disappointing. Service and seating area were fine, but you cannot make up for bad food.
google avatar

Yelp
An old favorite from my years living in the Boulder area. Here on vacation now and had to make a stop at Half Fast. Possibly the largest sub menu I've ever encountered, and definitely the largest variety of vegetarian sandwiches I've encountered. The shop is right in the heart of the university district and can be really busy at times, but it's worth the wait because the food is fantastic.

Nevaeh M.

Yelp
Tony is the best. Not only was he able to provide us amazing service, but he is the reason we continuously visit. He is so kind and welcoming to each and every guest. Definitely needs more recognition for his work!
google avatar

Yelp
service was good. gluten free bread must have been an extra $4 or something insane. i got a 4inch turkey pesto which is normally a 5.99 but my total ended up being over $10... which is ridiculous. i don't feel a need to come back here for that price. the music inside was also atrocious. it's a early friday evening and we are blasting something worse than edm? not even sure. no hate. the sandwich was good (even the gf bread) and we sat outside but personally too expensive for me being gluten free. ‍
google avatar

Angi B.

Yelp
I'll jump to the point: This is the best sandwich I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating here. I had the Big Apple, and I LOVED it. I've had a lot of sandwiches in my life, and this is the No. 1 sandwich on the list. I should also mention that I'm a very picky eater. We went on a Sunday in mid-June on our way to the mountains. Other than parking headaches (as is norm for a college town), the experience was fantastic. The menu was extensive, and the staff were amazing. Do not wait. If you're researching places to eat in Boulder, this should be at the top of your list.
google avatar

Brittnie A.

Yelp
Huge sandwich menu, gluten free subs in every size, and the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen (or smelled) on a restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Really good food but why is the turnaround time for a Caesar salad 45 minutes? I always put in my order 25-30 minutes before heading to this location and then I arrive and am told my order hasn't even been started and that it'll be 45 minutes or so Like yes, it can be busy sometimes, but it's a salad ............. A lettuce and parmesan salad..... it's a good salad, but not a 45 minute salad. Keep the $9.80 & your salad at that point.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I have to admit I have a favorite here--the Reuben sub--that I always order and it is so awesome I stop here everytime I have a chance. But my experience with the other 100 or so sandwiches on the menu is limited to seeing what my friends order. They're always happy with their choices! The restaurant has a pretty basic college town atmosphere, with indoor seating and a patio that's nice in warmer weather. Some alcoholic beverages await you--premade margaritas, basic beer choices, but this is not the place for a hand-crafted cocktail or elite brews. Bottom line, come in here for a tasty sandwich and you'll first be overwhelmed by the number of choices, but once you decide you'll love your food.
google avatar

Hillary K.

Yelp
We initially ordered our food for pick up but decided to eat inside once we saw there was open seating. Their food options are massive and I would have a hard time believing someone could come here and say they can't find something to eat. The individual at the counter was very friendly and knowledgeable about all the options. Definitely will be visiting again. There so many options we HAVE to come and try more.
google avatar

Michaela M.

Yelp
The selection of subs was amazing! I also really enjoyed the sandwich I ordered. Great environment for college students and the staff was super kind!
google avatar

Yelp
Our first time here was a couple years back, enticed by hearing its the largest sandwich menu in the US. It was tasty enough, but the main reason we decided to keep coming up fairly regularly from Denver over the years was the loyalty program/ stamp rewards card plus the excitement of trying out new sandwiches each time. Truthfully that excitement has faded as it feels every time they're out of ingredients so we have to order the same-olds (what's the point of having the nations biggest menu if only half of its available at a given time?) and they're super inconsistent with how they stamp rewards (sometimes we'd get 2 stars for one 14" alone, other times 1 star for the whole order despite multiple 14"s). After our most recent disappointment waiting 40 mins for a Tempeh Parmesan (they were out of eggplant) so skimpy it was hardly worth the price, I don't think we'll be back again.

A G.

Yelp
Came up to Boulder to pick up my daughter and stopped here again. This is the best sub restaurant. Love this place! The Big Apple is the best sub ever created. They will get my business every time I come to Boulder. By far my favorite sub shop!
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
A very ok and very slow sandwich shop. Staff is really nice. Big menu, but a few of the items are big passes. If you're looking for a classic turkey and mayo, you'll enjoy it. The Italian subs are both fine but more Subway than Italian deli. They have a few funny hybrid subs - I like the Torpedo, which on paper sounded awful and I kind of ordered as a joke, but it was really tasty. Every time I got in here they recommend the prime rib sub. I finally got around to it and it's not good. About 1/4 hard unrendered fat, and the rest is chewy tasteless roast beef. The classic "this sandwich is terrible and the portions are too small" gag. Lots of vegetarian items, so a safe choice for a quick bite with non meat eaters. Prices are about 15% higher than they should be for the portion, but that's just Boulder. Protein value is about a C+. Wait times push past a minimum of 15 minutes, even for cold subs.

Tucker T.

Yelp
The sandwiches are pretty good and the pitchers are really good but it always takes forever to get our food. Still a good place to go and sit out on the patio all day
google avatar

Chloe S.

Yelp
My friends and I go here probably once a week. My favorite spot on the hill for sure. Super close to CU campus and always good!

Yelp
After a bad-ass rock show next door at Fox Theatre, the first thought on my mind was late night eats. Opening up my handy dandy Yelp app, I realized Half Fast Subs was open till 1am. Radness! I was reading the menu on the short walk over, and it felt like there were 100 subs on the menu. FTW. I didn't believe it. Then I walked up to the counter and was greeted by one of the largest menu boards I've ever seen. Yep, there were literally 100 sandwiches up there. But like, how? How I ask! I went with the 7" Buff Chicken Sub on French bread. I also ordered a PBR, because it just felt right. The torpedo of a sub came out very quickly. Mostly big chunks of chicken, buffalo sauce, bleu cheese, celery pieces and crusty bread. The end result satisfied the craving, but left more to be desired. That's just my humble opinion, man. As a 28-year-old, there's not too many places I venture to that has me leading the pack age-wise. I was literally the oldest person here! It's a college joint plain and simple, and I'm glad the Boulder alums have late night places to eat like this. My experience here took me back to my dorm room days. And in this instance, that was A-OK.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Love it, good food. Good service. Subs are great. Fun atmosphere. Try the spicy Thai or turkey gobbler
google avatar

Cayla G.

Yelp
Pretty dang good subs! Their "strongos" - formerly "strong island ice tea" - are super tasty and dangerously alcoholic. I like the little patio and watching all the college kids drink too much. It's a real hoot.
google avatar

Josie L.

Yelp
Definitely the best sandwiches in boulder and maybe denver too. They also have just about every ingredient you could ever want. Beats snarfs by a LONG shot. (I'm passionate about deli sandwiches so you should trust my review) The wait times can be a little lengthy around lunchtime on weekends, but I'd sit amongst the college crowd and wait 20 mins for a sub here any day!

Joe P.

Yelp
Best sandwich shop in Boulder. Tasty and yummy. Not sure if they still have their punch card
google avatar

Lady N.

Yelp
Great sub shop! Good meat & veggies to bread ratio which is always key to a good sub. Not from the area, but my honey and I repeatedly say while traveling "Wish this town had a Half Fast Subs."
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
I've been here once. Had a roast beef sandwich. It was good. But I have to be honest and say that I showed up and ordered at 1130a. Before the lunch rush, not a lot of people. Waited 20 minutes for my order. That's just too long. Snarf's is half that when they're busy. Sandwich came without a bag, without napkins. Napkin dispenser empty. Server said "there might be some over there..." gesturing towards the patio. OK, long wait, service is baked/slow/bored, sandwich good but not excellent. Meh. Not going back.
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
If you can't find a sandwich here that works for your taste buds, something is wrong with you. The menu will overwhelm you. We had a basic turkey and also a Philly cheesesteak. Both were spot on. Bread was fantastic. Prices were reasonable. We got here early so there was no line.

J B.

Yelp
Best deli sandwich ever! We popped in after walking around the campus. It was a very hot day and we were greeted by a very well air conditioned restaurant! We got their specialty sandwich Half Fast Sub. Wow! Super delicious on tasty bread. It was their special of the day so we got the sub, drink and bag of chips for under $8! We will be back :)
google avatar

Yelp
Half Fast is a staple in the Boulder community, and I would argue some of the best sandwiches in Boulder. I visited numerous times while in school at CU, and this was always my go-to fast-casual food on the Hill. I visited this week during the COVID crisis while in Boulder, and it was still the same great (delicious) food as it has always been! The service was awesome as always, friendly staff and quick service. I had to enter to order food, there were maybe another 5 people in the restaurant waiting for their orders, but it is a big enough space that we were all able to socially distance. There were no guidelines given by the restaurant regarding where people should stand, and I didn't see anything about requiring the use of masks inside. All of the seating was blocked off so it was clear you had to take your food to-go. All of the staff were wearing masks - but not consistently. This made me a little uncomfortable considering they were preparing the food. I saw a couple of staff members who were trying to either talk with customers or each other remove their masks to talk, then put the mask back on. I understand it is difficult to communicate easily with them, but it seemed strange and did make me think twice about my order. Crazy pandemic times. I'll definitely be going back, and you should support this business too. I hope to continue to visit as the years go by when I am in Boulder!

Yelp
This place is an absolute must if you're visiting Boulder! They have so many selections of subs, you say what you're in the mood for- and they have it. Craving a hot sub? They have it Craving a cold sub? They have it Craving a veggie sub? They have it Craving oriental food? They have an oriental sub Craving a Thanksgiving meal? They have a Thanksgiving inspired sub! This place literally covers any and all cravings for whatever you desire- in sub form! Since my most recent visit they've also started offering gluten free options on their menu as well. The bread is fresh, and you can tell they make it all right there. I had a buffalo chicken sandwich and the lettuce and celery were so crunchy and fresh mixed in with the hot sauce and blue cheese. They have a dang good happy hour menu with their pitchers of long islands- where else can you say that you drank a pitcher of a long island?! They have a great setup for a patio outdoors and overall a fun vibe and relaxed place to hang out. This is always a must when visiting Boulder!

L H.

Yelp
Huge sandwich's with great flavor. I've never seen a menu with more sub choices ever. Fun to try a new spin on any sub.

Jaclyn U.

Yelp
Great food!! Huge menu selection! Great drinks and not to mention the staff is amazing! Warm cafeteria setting with a lot of TVs to watch College football.
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Half-fast subs is the greatest sub shop I have every been too. Great drinks, food, service, everything. Their bread is fantastic, especially the French. Have been going there since 2015. A diverse menu that includes so many different kinds that it's unbelievable that so many are very high quality. My favorites are the Bacon Cheeseburger Hoagie (the sauce is so good), the Italian (but it's a messy one), and the Ba-donkadonk. Definitely a must visit if you're in Boulder. Thanks for all the great food guys!

Gonzo G.

Yelp
Quality food on the Hill. Some nice daily specials for drinks which is declining in the immediate area. Good selection of sandwiches but parking always makes it a challenge. Nice iconic older building with decent seating inside and a few outdoor patio seating. Great daily spot to meet your friends or family when in town to roam the area. Fairly affordable but more important not that fast food vibe as the content is more mom and pop like in most delis.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Wow that's a lot of sandwiches. Don't let the menu intimidate you, find a sandwich that appeals to you and order it. You won't be disappointed. While not every sandwich is a homerun, most are exceptional and those that are not tend to be a step above average. I filled a sandwich punch card in three visits running into Boulder to pick up lunch for several folks I told about this place. We are all believers.
google avatar

Ross W.

Yelp
I came here after seeing their sign while getting gas and boy was I in for a surprise. Their menu is HUGE but divided by meat (or veggie) which makes it much easier to navigate. I decided on the green turkey sub and loved how the different ingredients came together. I would have never considered to put sprouts, salsa, and avocado on a sub but it worked so well. All of the ingredients really complemented each other. I can't wait to come back and try more of their subs!

Ellie E.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich place of all time. With over 100 different sandwich options you cannot go wrong here. Each sandwich is made on a French baguette with fresh ingredients. I always am sure to bring visitors from out of town here so they can experience the delicious food.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Half fast I think is completely hit or miss. There is a good chance that your bun will get soggy if you don't eat it quick, so it's better to gobble it down ASAP. I've tried the buff chick and the chicken caesar subs and they made me feel really disgusting afterwards. Also they were pretty slimey. Just tried the pizza steak and loved it, but it still made me feel really gross afterwards. I'm really wanting to try their roast beef next time but from the looks of my friends it seemed a tad bit overcooked.
google avatar

Courtland M.

Yelp
Great sub and atmosphere! Had the BBQ tempeh sandwich which was awesome. They have so many sandwiches to choose from.
google avatar

MacKenzie T.

Yelp
Straight up this was the best sub I have ever had. We picked up the Thai tempeh and veggie Reuben. They are also HUGE. The service was great and it's a cool little interior.
google avatar

Char S.

Yelp
I was in Boulder for the Shakespeare festival and we stopped to grab a sandwich. I ordered the new Turkey sandwich. It was a little too sweet for my taste and I did not realize it was a hot sub. If I had seen it before ordering I would have gotten one of the specials of day. It was busy, but the service was pretty bad. I spent 5 minutes listening to the person taking orders having a conversation about who is the youngest employee instead of taking orders. I will say, they do have a very large menu that caters to all taste and dietary needs. Overall, I was not impressed.
google avatar

Henry M.

Yelp
I love half fast. Sandwiches. Pitchers. Cookies. Patio.
google avatar

Olive O.

Yelp
How can you go wrong? I've been coming here since 1997. If you are a sub lover this is a must with so many choices! My favorite is the gobbler (I think) but it's one of those turkey dinners on a bun. This place never lets me down! From the awesome drink specials to the numerous selection of subs this is hands down one of the best sub shops in the state (or nation really). Delicious every time.
google avatar

Yesenia D.

Yelp
Half Fast Subs' extensive menu offers options for something for just about everyone regardless of any dietary restrictions. They have plenty of meat options, vegetarian/vegan options, and even gluten free with their whopping menu with well over 50+ items! As a college student, Half Fast Subs used to be one of my go-to restaurants for a filling and affordable meal. Now as a young professional I still manage to find myself back there during lunch breaks. After years away from Boulder, I finally revisited (twice) within the last month. I have ordered the BBQ veggie and Portabella Boomer. The BBQ veggie had a lot more sauce than I was hoping for but the flavor was still very savory and had a hint of spiciness. The Portabella Boomer definitely knocked it out of the park. Not only do they offer some delicious and savory sandwiches that are made to order - but they even sell "Strong" Islands! This is a great place to come with a group of people to enjoy some sandwiches and have a drink. Disclaimer: you may not need more than one! Like everywhere on The Hill, Half Fast Subs is a very chill and hip environment. Even though it seems most of the patrons are college students, it's a great place that everyone will enjoy!

Blake D.

Yelp
This place has great subs. the 14 " sub is worth every dollar. Great bar section as well, and they offer happy hour deals every day of the week.
