Hamburger Mary’s Reopens its Chicago Location | Eater Chicago

"After five years away, the admired burger bar and drag-centric venue has returned in a larger Edgewater home with a glittery, red-curtained stage and one of Chicago’s most celebrated drag dressing rooms. The original Andersonville spot operated for nearly 15 years before a 2020 closure driven by COVID-19, tight space, and landlord disagreements; gentrification ultimately pushed the relaunch to Edgewater, where co-owner Ashley Wright says they’re getting more space for less rent. Inside, hot-pink and rich-purple walls burst with camp: souvenir Pleaser-shaped glasses, purses, high heels, and hats fixed to the walls, and framed vinyl of Donna Summer, Dolly Parton, and other queer icons. I’ve enjoyed a meal here, and walking back in felt refreshingly optimistic for a community that’s lost stages; the casting call drew over 200 applications, and during the preview weekend my friend Aja Ajani hosted Saturday night, warming up an already electric, ticketed crowd. Part of a chain founded in 1972 in San Francisco with 10 locations nationwide, this iteration doubles down on being a safe, queer-identifying space—“bigger and bolder and more fabulous than before”—with drag-centered entertainment and burgers at its heart; it’s open Wednesday through Sunday with reservations via Toast." - Brandon Summers-Miller

Milk Bar’s Christina Tosi and Daisies’ Leigh Omilinsky Collaborate on a Special Croissant | Eater Chicago

"This iconic LGBTQ bar and restaurant — once part of an 18-location chain known for burgers, beers, and drag shows — is teasing a comeback after closing in 2020 amid COVID-related restrictions. Long associated with an Andersonville address at 5400 N. Clark Street, the group is now eyeing a new Edgewater site at 1055 W. Bryn Mawr; siblings Ashley and Brandon Wright are awaiting city approval of a liquor license to move forward." - Ashok Selvam

Hamburger Mary’s Andersonville Restaurant and Bar Is for Sale | Eater Chicago

"A popular Andersonville drag-and-burger destination is listed for sale at 5400-5402 N. Clark Street; the SVN Chicago Commercial listing names Hamburger Mary’s and details included business assets such as all “unencumbered” fixtures and equipment and pro-rated licenses (incidental liquor, retail food, and sidewalk cafe) while excluding brewing equipment and the POS system, with an asking price of $185,000. The Andersonville location first opened in 2006 and serves as Hamburger Mary’s International’s “world HQ,” and owners later added Mary’s Attic upstairs in 2007 and a sports bar next door three years after that. Co-owner Brandon Wright says there is still more than a year left on the restaurant’s current lease and he plans to remain for the duration while hoping eventually to relocate to a spot with a larger dining area and lower rent. Best known for a festive vibe, creative burger combinations, and talented drag performers, the franchise also touts home-brewed ales and a “classy-kitsch” personality—“Eat, Drink, and be MARY!”—and operates outposts across several states; a second Illinois Mary’s in Oak Park will remain open." - Naomi Waxman

Had a great time!! Debbie is LOVELY please give her a raise thanks. The fried pickles were the best in the city hands down. The fries were alright, and so were the drinks-- only complaint was they took forever to come out. Good time overall :)))

Glad to see Hamburger Mary’s is back! Had the Mary burger, it was delicious. And the bottomless mimosas kept on coming and were great. The drag performances were the highlight, such amazing talent and fun. Highly recommend checking them out.

Mary's is back! I love the new location. The space is huge, open, and inviting. Stopped in for a burger and drinks; the burger was delicious an well cooked, the sweet potato fries cripsy, and the drinks sweet and strong. Feels like home again!

Perhaps unfairly, I'm basing this review on the two experiences my partner and I had at HM's prior location in Andersonville. I'm certainly open to deleting this review. Since the 1980s I've felt it important to support gay owned businesses. On our visits to the prior location we were treated poorly in the extreme: the servers were angry, rude, condescending, and passive aggressive. After being treated this way the first time, we thought that perhaps the server was having a particularly bad day. A couple of months later we returned and faced the identical bitchy, negative attitude from a different server. I spent much time crafting a respectful letter to the owners expressing my concern because I so wanted their business to succeed, and I believed they needed to know what was happening in their restaurant. In the letter I included my name, address, phone, and email, and expressed that I was not looking for any discount on a future visit. I received no letter in response, no phone call, no voice mail, and no email. Needless to say, my partner and I never returned. If the servers did not care about customer service, it follows that the owners cultivate that attitude by their own example. So, what I'd like to know is if the owners of the new location are the same as the owners of the old location. If different, I'm open to deleting this post. I'm truly sorry about having to take this this public, but perhaps it will be the only way to get a response. Beware of the chance that you will experience unwarranted abuse by staff at Hamburger Mary's.

The ambiance of the establishment was captivating, adorned with an abundance of festive decorations. The culinary offerings were satisfactory. In the non-show area, the lighting was subdued, necessitating the use of mobile devices to peruse the menu. The staff and waitress exhibited commendable friendliness and attentiveness. Notably, they refrained from assigning our group to a separate bill. However, patrons seeking seating in the show area are required to pay an additional $10 per person, which is subsequently included in the bill. Gratuities are already factored into the total.

The drag shows are always great but the food and atmosphere is always a pleasure to be around. Zak and Barbie Blanco are loud, proud, and awesome servers. Ashley and Brandon are awesome and involved owners. The food is always served fresh and delicious. I love this place just to hang out after work and absorb the vibe it gives off. Thanks guys!

The atmosphere at Hamburger Mary’s was pleasant, with a fun and lively vibe at the start. The performances, however, were just average—not particularly memorable. For food, I tried the cheese curds, which were just okay—nothing special and with a presentation that felt a bit underwhelming. The vegetable spring rolls tasted like something you could pick up from Panda Express, and the plating didn’t help the appeal. On the positive side, the service was great. The servers were attentive, friendly, and kept the experience running smoothly. Drinks were decent, though not standout. One thing I noticed—once the performers finished their acts, the majority of the crowd left, which made the place feel a little empty and flat toward the end of the night. Overall, it gave me the vibe of a “visit once” kind of spot. Fun to check off the list, but I’m not in a rush to return.

Yelp
WELCOME BACK TO EDGEWATER, MARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She's back, and more awesome than ever! Same sassy vibe, same FUN TIMES. I've been here a couple of times now - the kitchen is just getting their sea legs, so the food right now is fine - a bit average - but fine. I have confidence it'll improve! Be aware there is a $10 extra charge for the drag show, and an automatic 15% service change added on. You can tip more - and you should - but you don't HAVE to. What I'm hoping is that Mary's is a runaway success and they open up on a day or two from Mon-Wed. Then, those of us that want a simple drink after work, maybe a snack, can come hang out without the extra show charge. But right now, I could not be MORE thrilled that this restaurant is back. Great staff, very friendly, cute and attentive. Burgers are good! And the DIVAS are SUPER FINE and so talented.

Yelp
I was really excited to visit Hamburger Mary's yesterday, especially since it left Andersonville about a year ago. The new space looks beautiful--exactly the kind of fun, colorful vibe I expected. One surprise: if you want to watch the show, it's now $10 per person. Before, everyone got to enjoy the show without an extra charge. The performers, though, were fantastic--super fun, encouraging, and really got the crowd going. The food has definitely improved, but with a name like Hamburger Mary's, I was expecting the burgers to be outstanding. They were good, just not "wow" good. Drinks were a little disappointing--the Bloody Mary was more "bloody" than "Mary," meaning light on the alcohol, though the price suggested otherwise. Another surprise was the automatic 15% service charge, no matter what you order. For two burgers, two Bloody Marys, and the $10-per-person show fee, the bill came to $125. I added another 5% tip plus tipped the performers separately. Overall, the staff was very nice, the show was a lot of fun, and the atmosphere is great. I don't see myself visiting too often at those prices, but I wish them success. If the drinks improve, that alone could get me to stay longer and order another round--or three.

Yelp
I have never visited this restaurant nor do I ever expect to visit it. They automatically add a 20% service charge to your bill while encouraging you to add a separate gratuity to "reward" your waitperson. Potentially: 20% service charge plus the expected standard 20% gratuity . . . 40% over and above the cost of your food? That's an absurdity.
