My visit to Hammonds House was for the "Sacred Space" exhibition which showcased archival prints by Black and Brown artists from Brandywine Workshop & Archives, including Louis Delsarte! Housed in a charming Victorian-style home turned museum, the space exudes a quaint, intimate energy that perfectly complements the art. Friendly greeters (often AUC students/ alumni) offer exhibition insights, while ample parking and on- site security ensure a smooth visit. Between the historic setting, carefully curated pieces, and community-focus, this Black-owned museum is an Atlanta must-see!

Nice historic house with changing exhibits. Small, but very interesting and worthwhile visit. This is my second visit and the art featured both times was amazing; not to mention getting to view some gems from their permanent collection!!

Caught the last day of Tokie Rome-Taylor's "Insight" exhibit, and I was so glad that I went. She has a great eye and the photos were stunning! I've always loved Hammonds House Museum, and this visit was no exception. This is a West End staple that should be preserved, so it can continue to thrive even in the midst of modifications to the community.

My now wife and I had our wedding here and it was amazing. Lydia and Apollo both were incredibly helpful to not only myself and wife, but to our guests during the whole event. The museum itself is beautiful and very well kept with great exhibits. I would absolutely recommend checking out HHM for either the museum experience or as a venue.

We visited this black owned establishment on Sunday, July 17, 2022. I purchased tickets prior to online on Eventbrite for $10. The Hammonds house museum is located right near the West End. This museum was the former house of Dr. Hammonds, who was a black prominent physician in Atlanta and also a surveyor of art. Upon arrival we parked in the free parking lot adjacent to the museum. Upon entry we were greeted by an employee who was professional and forthcoming. She verified our ticket purchase with the QR code on my telephone. We had the option to sign in on a sheet by providing our information to get on an email list. This establishment is clean, historic, and well maintained. There is a plaque right by the front door that shows the Georgia State Capital dedicating the Hammonds house as an important physical landmark in the state of Georgia. Due to its black art showcasing, this museum is vital to the West End community. The employee stated we could walk around and view the gallery ourselves, and we were allowed to go upstairs to view paintings and artwork. They do have a small gift shop in the front that sells Hammonds house museum paraphernalia, books, jewelry, and other artwork. They also have brochures on how to become a member of the Hammonds house museum. There were also brochures on Joe Barry Carroll: My View from 7 Feet, which is on display from now until September 18, 2022. On the opening night of each artist’s showcase, I do believe the artist and other Hammonds house employees put on a special program. This is to promote and celebrate the artist’s particular gallery pieces. Across from the gift shop was the first gallery stop which features beautiful black artwork by the artist in bright colors of red, orange, and yellow. The paintings feature black women and men in their daily lives, and even children with cultural aspects of blackness. There were also benches in the gallery rooms for guests to sit and take in the beautiful black artwork by the artist Mr. Carroll. There is a parlor room towards the back of the first floor which has memorabilia from Dr. Hammonds’s house. This room features what appears to be some of his personal collection of artwork, and past memorable photographs of himself. The parlor also has a beautiful fireplace and dining room set up with a portrait of a beautiful black women with an Afro as one of the centerpiece artworks in this room. There appears to be many antiques and treasures that Dr. Hammonds owned which are on display for patrons to see. I felt this personalized the home which is now used as an art gallery to celebrate black artists, but also allows the identity of Dr. Hammonds to remain in the home. The other part of the first floor includes a kitchen and a restroom. This leads me to believe you can reserve this museum for private events, galas, and other special occasions. The artist’s showpieces and artwork are all over the first floor and in every room, which had wide open spaces for viewing. We did notice that the artist loves to use warm colors and depict beautiful black figures in each of his widescale pieces. Once we went upstairs there was more artwork in the artist’s signature hues featuring symbols of black unity, including a family portrait of a warm embrace of two Black people. There was also a portrait of a beautiful woman’s form and backside as a show piece. Overall I feel the Hammonds house museum is a hidden gem in one of the most historic parts of Atlanta which is the West End. I do feel like a lot of people do not know about this museum because it is not heavily advertised, but due to the rich black culture in Atlanta I do feel it is worth a visit at least once. I do wish the employees would give a guided tour by showcasing the artist’s artwork, and providing background on the Hammonds house museum history for patrons. I do like that there is a rotation of different black artists throughout the year who have works on display temporarily in this museum. I do recommend everyone in Atlanta visit this museum to admire black artists’ artwork on display.

A wonderful exhibit put together with care and concern for lifting up Black voices. In this day and age of counterculture politics, spaces like this one mean even more to the communities they serve. Only minor gripe is that the outside exhibits feel a bit sparse comparatively.

Not only is this a great place to view artwork, there’s also historical value in the house itself. Such exquisite artwork was displayed during my visit and I will be checking back often for upcoming exhibitions.

Yelp
I decided to go on a little journey to explore Atlanta. In my quest of exploring I discovered Hammond's House Museum. It's a fairly small museum which was originally the house of a successful African American doctor named Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds who had a love for the arts. ***Please note it is a SMALL museum but the art work is beautiful. It took me about 30 mins which mostly included me watching some of a short film to go through the entire museum. The reason for my four stars instead of five is as I was visiting the museum in one of the rooms that I entered there seemed to be two women who I believe were employees that sat at a table in one of the museum rooms and talked and discussed business as I entered an explored the art. It was very unprofessional! Other than that, a great hidden gem to explore in Atlanta. Students pay a discounted rate with IDs of $5.00, adults $10.00 and anyone under the age of 12 are free.

Yelp
Thinking back on my visit, I am glad I opted to purchase the Groupon. Time went by, and I hadn't yet used to. So glad I gave this place a try. The House itself is an open love letter to the Westside of Atlanta. I believe the host told me the artist is named Shaniqua Gay. In the house there are beautiful painting on the walls showcasing the community's known figures. Captivating, historic, and memorable. I recommend everyone to visit to experience the artistry. Side note: Parking may be a bit difficult to locate but there's a library walking distance from the house.

Yelp
What an amazing experience and exhibit of beautiful black men dressed to the nines! I miss when this was a everyday occurrence and not just on holidays and special occasions.

Yelp
The Hammonds House is one of the precious jewels of the SE Region. They have cutting edge programming and display some of the best in class African American visual artists, all in the confines of a beautiful Victorian house. The staff is very friendly and the gift shop has some beautiful, affordable items. I make it my business to not miss any event or exhibition taking place there....I recommend it to all, no matter your cultural or racial background...it's truly a place for all!

Yelp
This is a museum that I go to several times throughout the year to hear guest speakers and for exhibits. They also have workshops, panel discussions, and other special events. The museum is very small and so is the parking lot. However, there is a lot of street parking. They charge $2.00 for students and seniors and $4.00 for adults.
