We had a reservation for two for date night. We kept hearing such great things about it online and had to try it- and our expectations were most definitely well met. The staff was attentive and kind and would explain every item we received and the best way to eat it. Considering we went on a day that there were 4 other tables doing tasting menus, our waitress was very quick and checked in often even with a busy crowd. There's no parking, prepare to find street parking!
We each got the omakase 14 pieces meal experience, which was then followed up by all you can eat from their AYCE Menu separate from their omakase menu set. The waitress brought out the course in 5 different waves.
The first was the crab miso soup. The real crab in it was bouncy and had a delicious aroma.
Second wave was 5 pieces of nigiri from left to right: madai, kanpachi, shima aji, scallop, squid. My favorite was the shimaaji and the scallop. The scallop was HUGE and sooo juicy and supple. The shima aji had a great texture of bounciness. The madai was great, but I preferred the other options the squid, is topped with a type of "umami" powder which could've been left out. Not a fan.
Third wave was 4 pieces of nigiri from left to right: sweet shrimp, akami, king salmon, mackerel. My favorite was the sweet shrimp. It wasn't as sweet as it could've been but it was great for being out of season. It still was creamy and bouncy. The akami was delicious as well. King salmon I was a bit let down with, I wasn't expecting it to be slightly seared. The mackerel was pretty good but it has a more astringent taste which isn't my initial pick.
Fourth round- uni chawanmushi. YUM!!!! It was so silly and custardy and the broth was full and homey. I loved every bit of this! It was topped with a shrimp and some uni.
5th round- uni, toro, wagyu beef. The uni was delicious! I believe it was Hokkaido uni, as it was less fishy and sweeter. It was great- Portland doesn't have a lot of reliable sushi places that do uni but this was definitely top. The toro was super yummy! And the wagyu beef was great, nothing spectacular but a great bite nonetheless.
We were brought sake options - you can each choose 3 for the omakase tasting menu so we got all 6 flavors. The menu tells you which sake to drink with what nigiri from the omakase tasting menu, it was really fun to follow!
Afterwards we did about 4 rounds of AYCE. For the AYCE you have a specific selection to choose from, with no time limit which was very generous! We ordered each of their available appetizers along some of our favorite nigiri options. Karaage was crispy and not oily. The uni tartare was very cute but I wish the bread was more toasted as it was a little too soft in the center. Shrimp tempura udon was SO GOOD! The broth was very flavorful and noodles were bouncy and chewy. Kabocha squash was good - sweet. We ended with desert: green tea mochi with vanilla ice cream inside, and a sweet potato with vanilla ice cream which was incredible!
Great experience. I'd recommend this place to others ! Glad I finally got to try it.
