Founded in 1868, the nation’s oldest African American museum reopened in March 2025 with refreshed galleries. The museum and WHRO highlighted new exhibitions on Black modernism and African art that deepen Hampton’s cultural story.

Beautiful museum with a lot of history and culture. If you’re in the area, it’s a must see place to visit. Walking the campus is a plus😃.

The campus is very historic and dated. The people are nice and there is a presence of law enforcement officers. However, it is a bit difficult finding various buildings and places on the campus.

Thank you Hampton University Museum for a splended Tour throughout your Museum... We really enjoyed the Tourist attractions Museum and William R. & Norma Harvey Library of "Reading is fundamental, "Knowledge is Power... Also the outdorsey monuments and art Exibits including the "Emancipation of Proclamation" Oak Tree and the wonderful tours of African American Heritage for "Black History Month. Our visit was rite on time to catch your Tour Guide touring with military members of the Coast Guard. Your Guide was great and very informative with excellent presentation of Historical Hampton University's history of inspiring motivational speakers, educators and students, residing at Hampton University. And the exquisite art, vintage paintings, Exibits, and monuments of indigenous natives, American Indian, African, Asian and European culturel arts. Memorabilia of Union military regiment and storytelling of spiritual leaders of encouraging people whom are the strength and backbone of this Historical University... We rated your Campus 5 star🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 Because of your abundance amount of African American History dating back to '1855 and the innovative infustructuring upgrades coming soon to enhance and beautify your lovely Hampton University... Thanks again Hampton University, will be back real soon! 😆 #African American History Month 😜

Under expansion, so main gallery - African American art - closed until August. Native American gallery has nothing about local indigenous cultures. Disappointing.

Yelp
I came to the museum after a visit to the VA Hospital located beside Hampton University's campus. It was very relaxing. It's FREE!! Well at least for today. The rep says it's always free but that is hard to believe because of the high quality and depth of the exhibits. This museum hosts an internationally ranked Native American collection. It was featured on a travel show as a must see location. I am a local but until the show reminded me that this museum was highly prized I did not even think about coming here. They have a decent Black History display. I enjoyed the experience. A great treasure trove of historical information that is varied in nature. A wonderful way to spend my afternoon. I went outside to view the Emancipation Oak and the site of the first school in American run by free black woman. Her home was burned to the ground because she refused to stop teaching slaves to read. The entire tour uplifted me and educated me about areas of Black and Native American history that I did not learn in school. Great experience for the enture family. This museum is a great local and national treasure. Please visit the Hampton University Museum.

Yelp
I was expecting something else. I was really looking for African American history from its beginnings - slavery - artifacts from slavery, emancipation, escaping, beginning of education, etc.
