Came by on the morning of their grand opening, albeit unbeknownst to me walking in. No wonder it was busy!
I will say...WHAT a messy bagel sandwich.
It tasted good, though. I got the "Spicy Sausage Egg & Cheese" sandwich (not actually spicy), which had the aforementioned main ingredients, plus jalapeño bits, pepper jack cheese, and a boatload of jalapeño cream cheese inside of a jalapeño cheddar bagel. With all the cream cheese, I reiterate, it wasn't spicy. Again, it did still taste good.
The proportions looked even, but upon taking a few bites (which was difficult with all the sloshing around of the sandwich's innards out onto my hands or onto the paper below), I discovered the mass of eggs (scrambled) that comprised the bulk of the sandwich. The sausage patty itself was on the small and thin side.
I also picked up a fresh croissant at the register, which was actually quite good, for a bagel place: hot, buttery, and flaky (I ordered around 9:30am, so still relatively fresh).
🤔 The croissant-buying experience was a little odd, I'd like to mention, in that the cashier, upon being asked for a croissant, simply grabbed it and placed it in my hand. My bare hand. As in no plate, paper sleeve, napkins, nothing. I asked if there were any of those items as I held a flaky, hot, buttery croissant in my hand and he looked at me and just said "no". The manager next to him noticed and said "yes, we can give you something". The cashier turned around for paper towels first, and then a medium size paper takeout bag, before the manager said "no no" and proceeded to give me paper wrap (for bagels). The whole exchange felt odd.
Anyway, the food was still good (albeit messy), the shop was busy (it just opened), and the service was...serviceable for now. I'm sure they'll get their sea legs once the ball gets rolling a bit more. H&H is a popular NYC chain, so a lot of people were lining up and probably will continue to line up.
🚻 There was one single-occupancy all-gender restroom towards the back, which was clearly labeled as such. I felt generally safe as a transwoman dining inside. It can be more than a little nerve-racking (the public restroom issue for transpeople), so I like to mention it. Be safe, trans/Nb foodies. 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
Find other LGBT-friendly bathrooms in DC I found through #genderneutralbathroomsindc on Instagram.
🅿️ Nearest metro stops are Mt Vernon Square (🟩 or 🟨 lines) and Gallery Pl-Chinatown (🟩🟨🟥).
Overall, H&H was good; I'm sure they'll pick up even more business as DC realizes there is a new NYC bagel shop in town.
