The Best Sushi Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"At Hando, saddle up to the counter and get your fill of hand rolls, small tapas-style appetizers, and robata. Sets are the way to go, offering three, four, or five different selections that include the spicy tuna hand roll — one of its simplest dishes that still packs a punch of heat. Its daily happy hour offers $7 house cocktails and a handful of $5 plates, including curry croquette and wasabi shumai. Grab a nightcap at the next-door speakeasy, Kanpai. A second larger location has opened in Spring Branch, which offers its own “hidden” bar." - Brittany Britto Garley

Hando - Review - The Heights - Houston - The Infatuation

"When you're in The Heights and want to grab some Happy Hour snacks or need a quick sushi fix, pop into Hando. The small sushi counter has a tight menu of hand rolls—hence the name—crispy snacks like sauced-up brussels sprouts or tender ribeye skewers. Service is quick, if impersonal, like dinner at the airport. Nothing here will wow you, but it will satisfy a yearning for raw salmon and wasabi. And with $7 cocktails and $5 snacks like karaage squid from 3-6pm every day, Hando makes a great venue for that weekly gossip download without the need to transfer money from savings to checking mid-meal. And, for even more cocktails after dinner, sneak into Hando’s in-house speakeasy bar Kanpai Club. photo credit: Michael Ma photo credit: Michael Ma photo credit: Michael Ma photo credit: Michael Ma Food Rundown Cocktails The house cocktails are the best part of dining here. Especially The Audacity with warm-spiced orgeat or the Tokyo Layover with layers of herbal liqueurs. Matchstick Salad Granted this is just a tiny julienned vegetable salad doused in salty soy sauce, but the effect is a refreshing palate cleanser between big bites of nori paper and fatty fish. Keep this around for the entire dinner and nibble on it indiscriminately. Wagyu Gyoza Not much separates these dumplings from any other place, other than they are on the small side. So, if you like a little dumpling snack with sushi, these will serve that purpose. Beef Skewers The ribeye tastes tender-ish and somewhat charred, and the mushroom gives each bite a nice texture. It’s simple and easy to enjoy while mid-conversation. Toro Hand Roll If the point of this dish is to deliver a lot of tuna belly in as simple a form as possible, then, goal accomplished. And for $9, it’s not a bad deal." - Chelsea Thomas

The Best Houston Restaurants for Solo Diners | Eater Houston

"Reminiscent of tightly packed sushi restaurants in Japan, this 22-seat hand roll bar offers a communal dining experience where every guest gets a view of the sushi-stuffing action. Along with freshly made hand rolls, find hearty eats like beef skewers and wagyu gyoza, suitable for a single diner. While the restaurant is busy enough that even a single seat sometimes requires a wait, you can also find sustenance at the Kanpai Club, the restaurant’s equally charming bar hidden through a shared door." - Minh Truong

Houston’s Own Turkey Leg Hut Appears on Disney+ Show ‘Encore’ - Eater Houston

"Hando, a new spot for sushi handrolls, has officially opened in the Heights. Per CultureMap, the restaurant made its debut on December 18, with a tight menu of 12 different types of handrolls on offer, each stuffed with proteins like yellowtail, Spam musubi, or tuna. It follows the arrival of Handies Douzo, yet another sushi spot that’s obsessed with handrolls, that opened in the Heights earlier in November." - Amy McCarthy

We decided to give this a shot figuring it would be a one and done new place. I was extremely and pleasantly surprised. We will most definitely be going back!! It's a very small but cozy and clean location. As you can see in the first picture, it's very small. The only seating is what is seen in the photo and it's all at the bar while we weren't used to this. It was a nice new , and allowed us to enjoy watching the various foods and drinks be prepared. We chose a starter and a skewer to begin with. Then we both picked what is essentially their lunch deal. Neither of us really expected to get full because they only offer hand rolls and small portions. Nothing huge but surprisingly we left with happy full stomachs. The flavors were nice and clean and well balanced. The service was top-notch. The atmosphere vibes were really chill and nice and cozy. I would recommend bringing maybe one or two friends here or coming here for like a date night or lunch Definitely not for kids not handicap accessible at all if you're looking for something new or to test your pallet, maybe or expand your pallet this is definitely the place to go! The prices were also very manageable. Our lunch deals were $21 a person and the we got starter and the skewer were $7 a piece. They have a nice little selection of house, cocktails, and alcoholic drinks small selection of nonalcoholic drinks and you get complementary water.

Hando is great if you’d like variety + handrolls. Their happy hour is absolutely amazing. The croquette is so crunchy and pairs well with the curry sauce. The specials they have are also great to try also. We ordered their 4 handroll sets both and really enjoyed them.

Hando is a handroll restaurant in Houston with two locations: one in the Heights and one near Spring Branch. I got the spicy tuna handroll, salmon handroll, toro handroll, unagi handroll, spicy scallop roll (a special that day), brussel sprouts, and ribeye skewer. The ribeye skewer comes with two skewers and were tender and juicy and seasoned well with teriyaki sauce. The handrolls were alright and could have been better in my opinion. The salmon was subpar; the chunks of salmon were a bit harder to chew and not as fresh or of nice quality at all—almost like Costco salmon. The spicy tuna handroll was the most appetizing. The brussel sprouts were also okay. It was just peeled layers of brussel sprouts with bonito flakes and kewpie. The seat spacing between each person is so tight. The man next to me kept man spreading and the woman on the other side kept bumping her arms against me, which kind of ruined the mood and made me so uncomfortable in my chair the whole time. We were packed like a can of sardines. Service was very fast and efficient, though. I got all my food in about five minutes, and they cleared the plates right after. They also give you a small bite of egg dessert at the end, which was nice. Parking spaces are very tight and limited. I had to park three blocks down on some random street. Overall, I, honestly, think there are better handroll restaurants in Houston with fresher and higher quality fish for the same prices and better seating spacing. I have been to their Spring Branch location and remembering it being better.

First time visiting and the hand rolls were delicious. The music was a bit too eclectic and off putting in comparison to the theme. The drinks are refreshing and would definitely come back!

Google
What a fun dining experience! The fish was fresh which is number 1 in my book. It’s a cool style of eating and it’s fun to have items dropped off to eat during the whole meal. It’s great for meetings or Dates because you can talk the whole time. There is an offered lunch menu that was at a great price, but we went with the 5 hand roll instead. The extra sea trout roll was on point! They were all good though. I will for sure be back.

Tried for the first time off UberEats. WOW the food was so rich and delicious! Definitely a need to try again, in-store this time. Can't go wrong here

This is another hand roll bar in Houston that we’ve tried. I like that they have a separate bar section that you can drink while waiting for your table. The drinks and starters were great! It is however a little too noisy at times. Unfortunately I also prefer the quality of food from the other one. For example, the seafood was cold for the hand rolls I’ve tried here and I noticed that the chefs did not wait for the seaweed to get toasted before started using them. They produced the hand rolls fast but they could have waited until the customer finish their rolls. In the other location, each chefs paid attention to their customer and provide hand rolls to the customer only when the previous one was done. The hand rolls here are much bigger than the other location due to the amount of rice being put into the rolls. I was really full with just the 5pcs of hand rolls. The spicy tuna, blue crab, shrimp katsu were great but the other two (yellowtail, fried oyster)were ordinary. The brussel sprouts was yummy but the portion is tiny; same as the miso soup which is not worth the 5$. The complimentary dessert was cute, it’s a sweet egg rolls which looks like japanese cheesecake but not.

Google
Very chill vibes. Mood lighting, music isn’t too loud nor too electronic. Nice date night spot. I took advantage of their 3-6pm HH, $5 apps and $7 cocktails. Recommend their curry croquets and calamari. Also got a hand roll set. I like the price point of this place, high quality but affordable enough to go on a more casual stint rather than limited to special occasions. Service very attentive and friendly, I came by myself and felt taken care of. There’s a separate parking lot just on the lot over if the main lot is full.

Yelp
I did not take a picture of every handroll because the pictures were not doing the handroll justice. First and foremost, the fish quality is amazing and each piece was fairly priced. My favorite was the ocean trout because the cut of fish was buttery and the toppings complimented the flavor of the ocean trout so well. The uni from Santa Barbara tasted amazing as well. Tamago was complimentary piece at the end of the meal. The decorations for the winter season were adorable (I visited beginning of January). This restaurant has more seating than other handroll restaurants I've visited (bar seating) and we walked in at 8PM without a wait. The lights were perfectly dimmed giving off an intimate vibe. The host was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food came out quickly and timed perfectly so that each roll came out as soon as you finished the previous one. It was my first time at handos but definitely not my last!

Yelp
Nice small spot with mostly bar type seating. It seemed a bit busy and I know some people were waiting for an open spot in the attached bar. We were lucky and were able to get seats soon after we arrived. They specialize in hand rolls. And have a good selection of them on the menu. They also have a few sets and I would suggest those because you save a few $$. Speaking of the $. Most hand rolls are around $7 each and a meal can get pricy very fast. The service was very good and there was a lot of staff able to help. The Japanese beer selection was off the charts. I saw beer here that I have only seen in Japan. A good selection of signature cocktails also. Tokyo Layover cocktail, $13: Nice cocktail with a balance of smoky Mezcal with a the right about of sweetness. Would recommend. Handrolls set of 4, $23: all the handrolls are a good size I would say they are bigger than average. And the filling runs throughout the roll and is not just on the end. Spicy Tuna, good. Actually had a bit of spice to it. Salmon. Ok. Not bad but not as good as the tuna. Fired Oyster, Very good. Oyster was fried perfectly and the roll had a great taste, highly recommend. Blue crab, ok. Hitachino Red Rice beer, $10. If you are wanting to try something a bit different this is a good beer to try. Sweet with lots of fruity notes. They only thing I can compare it to would be a less intense Lambic Framboise. I would recommend trying Hando especially during a happy hour. Everything we had was good to very good. It is a bit pricey but if you are just looking for a small snack and a drink its not a bad place to try. Would recommend and return.

Yelp
3.5 stars. The prices here are excellent and very affordable. The food is fresh, high quality, and arrives quickly. Service is attentive but not overly so and the restaurant is gorgeous inside. Tried the shrimp, spicy tuna, and eel hand rolls. The spicy tuna is truly spicy, the shrimp was a bit lackluster, and the eel was exactly as described (and very hot temp wise). The skewer dish I wasn't stoked on, but the spicy edamame was some of the best I've had at similar establishments. The gyoza was the real diamond in the rough - hot, fresh, perfectly crisp, accompanied by ample sauce. The brussels were the saddest part of my experience. The dish was all leaf and no sprout. Misleading, overpriced, and unfortunate! Finally, the espresso martini is on tap and is delicious with the added toasted marshmallow. I'll be back and would recommend a visit!

Yelp
We had a good and tasty lunch at Hando! There are only 20 seats available, but luckily they weren't busy on a weekend afternoon. I got their 4 piece hand roll set (tuna, salmon, blue crab, and fried oyster). Good thing I wasn't starving, otherwise I would definitely have had to order more items. Our server was very friendly and the interior allows a lot of natural light in. I'd come back for their happy hour (everyday from 3-6pm) or their lunch specials.

Yelp
Hando was the perfect Sat afternoon lunch when you want to treat yourself a bit without getting overly full. I loved how relatively healthy it was because it's just a mix of fresh fish, warm steamed rice, crispy nori, and whatever extra little toppings they use for flavor. Since Hando is only a small 20 seat sushi counter, service here was really fast. They purposely course you out 1 handroll at a time so that each handroll is at its peak freshness and made to order. Ambiance is casual yet fun, perfect for a date. Don't forget to try their cocktails as well, and if there happens to be a wait you can hang out in their connecting bar, Kanpai Club. If it's your first time here, I recommend getting the 5 handroll set so you get to try all of the classics. Then if you're still hungry, I highly recommend trying whatever specials they are currently offering. I'd say the only slight downside to coming here is the price if you're coming here really hungry. It can get expensive for a lunch if you're hungry, but not unreasonable for a nicer date night. Luckily, they also have happy hour daily from 3-6pm that makes it a little easier on the wallet. Enjoy!

Yelp
We visited Hando with a party of three on 12/27/2024 at about 5pm. This was my first visit to this restaurant; however, one of the people in our party was a veteran. We actually started at the bar next door. Please visit this bar, as it is pretty awesome. It is a nice space, with lots of drinks, even better at Happy Hour. I had The Audacity, which was sweet and right up my alley. When we moved over to the restaurant, we were seated at the counter. This place does fill up quickly, which is why we opted to dine early. The service is great at this location. We had everything very promptly, and everything that we ordered was delivered. I had the four piece hand roll set, which included the Tuna, Salmon, Blue Crab and Fried Oyster. The table also shared some Brussel Sprouts, Karaage and some spiced chicken. Everything we had was delicious! I would most definitely return here again in the future.

Yelp
Unique cocktail menu, and food tastes amazing. Service is excellent! Parking is available, would recommend going during the day because at night it tends to get very busy.

Yelp
Came here as part of Houston Restaurant Week, and had a good experience! All the hand rolls were incredibly fresh and I loved the bar experience. The interior was super nice, but probably can't accommodate for larger parties. The one thing that I did get as part of the HRW menu I was not a fan of was the chicken meatballs. The meatballs were on the colder/room temperature side and the flavor was not anything super mind-blowing. I would still come back and grab a quick but filling meal here if I were in the area!

Yelp
We have been a few times and they've always been super consistent. The food is always fresh, light yet filling, and flavorful. When we want to treat ourselves to really good sushi, we like to come here. Also, this is an ideal place for a date night. They are always busy so expect about 30 mins to an hour wait. While you wait, you can go to their bar room and snack and/or drink. Once you're seated, there is a small saucer plate with a white tab. When they pour water on it, it'll grow and you can use that like a wipe to clean your hands before you eat your sushi. Free but small parking out front .

Yelp
Hando is an easy date night fav. While I'm not a raw sushi girlie, I do love a good tempura and crab roll which Hando has. The food comes out quickly, and the chefs and bartenders have a good hand on the food and drinks they make.

Yelp
Came here as part of HRW24 and had a nice handroll dinner. Its a pretty small space with seating around the sushi bar so be prepared to cozy on up with your party and those next to you! As part of HRW we got an appetizer, a skewer, and four handrolls. I got the potato croquette with curry sauce and it was very well fried and fluffy. The curry sauce, is japanese curry sauce which is a fairly mild, sort of sweet curry. I enjoyed the baby octopus skewer, well flavored and nicely charred. Handroll wise, the winner for me was the fried oyster handroll. I was surprised at how good it was and would definitely return for just that one roll. Service was fine, maybe because it was busy, it didn't seem as attentive. Food was coming out at a seemingly random pace so that made for a bit of an awkward experience as far as trying to eat my food. Overall, I think the food is solid and they def seem to have a lot of takeout orders as well. The in restaurant experience seemed meh, between the awkward timing and tight quarters.

Yelp
I love anything sushi and hand rolls so, this place was a great! There is limited seating but people come and go pretty fast. The staff was very friendly. I went with some friends and we told them this was our first time trying this place out. He gave us some free dessert in the end which was super sweet! I got the four piece set and added hokkaido uni. This instance made me give it a four star because it sounded like it was a hand roll but when it came out, it was one small bite. A little disappointed but it was still good... The set was pretty filling. After the third one, I started to feel full. It is very simple, but so good! Hando is a great place if you need something small and quick. They also offer happy hour for some apps and $7 cocktails! Overall, my experience was good I just wished they changed somethings up.

Yelp
This one in the heights, super cool vibes. Sit at the bar - only seating they have! Service is amazing because you get to watch them make the sushi. You can tell them how you like the roll or what you don't like. They can make it to your liking. Mostly traditional sushi rolls. Made right in front of you, it was a great girls night! Parking lot

Yelp
I've been going to Hando for a while as I love their hand rolls and this time around I didn't realize they had a Houston Restaurant Week menu! It was only $25 per person for lunch, which was a great value. I tried the spiced chicken tsukune for my first course; the flavor was sweet and citrusy but I wish it was served hot as it was a bit cold in the middle. For my second course, I tried the spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon which we're all familiar with. Everything was delicious as expected. Great rice to fish ratio, fresh fish, crisp and easy to eat seaweed! Love their soy sauce and wasabi too. I also highly recommend trying their cocktails as they are some of my favorite in town!

Yelp
It was my first time coming in, and I came strickely for the handrolls. You walk in and wait to be seated at the hostess stand. You also pay-out at the end at the hostess stand. It's set up like a typical sushi counter. The servers were really pushing for guests to order their cocktails, which they said they are known for. But I came to eat. Maybe I would come back during their daily special time-frame 3p to 6p (happy hour). After getting some info from their server, I ordered. HR special Tsukemono - great start and full of flavor. My only critique is that they should add actual fish to it. It would be a standout. 4 pack HR 1- Spicy tuna, it was fine. HR 2 Salmon- the quality of it was great, so this was a great bite, nice and fatty. HR 3 Blue Crab- my fav of the set. Loads of fresh crab, yuzo tobiko, and cilantro adds just what it needs to make it feel complete. HR Oyster- it was fine. I hear the HR Ocean trout is yum, if I'm in the area, may come back!

Yelp
Came here on a weekday for lunch. The restaurant is pretty small and all seating are at the u shaped bar with sushi chef and host working in the middle. The interior style has a modern twist to the Japanese sushi restaurant. We started out with couple appetizers, brussels sprouts, waygu gyoza, duck gyoza, and edamame. The Brussels sprouts were crunchy and nicely flavored, everything else tasted like they could be coming from the frozen aisle of H-Mart. For the main, we ordered uni bite, yellowtail sashimi, salmon sashimi and various hand rolls. Most of the rolls are 2.5 or 3 out of 5 for me. For the price point, I expected better quality fish and better handling of the hand roll, but the experience felt more like watching someone making burrito at Chipotle in front of me. They do have an extensive collection of Japanese beers and sake, but I wish the temperature of the beer could be cooler. Overall, nice concept and fits wells in the Heights, but I wouldn't recommend this place over other spots with similar price point in town.

Yelp
My friends and I came here during Houston Restaurant Week (HRW); because of that, we could only order select items to qualify for the special prices. Food (4.5/5): It is a bit on the pricier side, but given the quality and how the rolls are made in front of you, I think it was reasonable. Overall, I found the appetizer and handrolls delicious. I was told customers would get full after about 3-4 rolls along with an appetizer so something to be mindful of. - Potato Croquette (5/5): this was one of the items that could be ordered during HRW and this is probably one of my favorite dishes from the menu. It had a good crispy texture and I believe the potato filling was seasoned as well! In addition, the curry was amazing as well and I found myself eating the curry by itself even when the potato croquette was gone, one of the waiters pointed it too! It was a great way to start my first time at Hando. - Shrimp Ceviche (5/5): this was NOT on the HRW menu, however, it sounded so appetizing I wanted to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. Personally, I loved how the shrimp was prepared tempura style. I'm not too familiar with Ceviche, but I could taste how fresh the vegetables were and the spice packed quite a punch! - Spicy Tuna (5/5): this was on the HRW menu. Of the handroll HRW options, I think this was my second favorite! I could taste the spice and it didn't have that lingering fishy aftertaste. - Yellowtail (5/5): this was on the HRW menu. I did NOT expect this to be my favorite of the HRW handroll options, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if it was seasoned a bit, but it felt like the fish melted in my mouth. In addition, no fishy aftertaste. It was such a simple, but delectable handroll. My friends also raved about the Yellowtail roll. - Salmon (4.5/5): this was on the HRW menu. My least favorite, but delicious nonetheless. Much like the Yellowtail, it had a good texture that sort of melts in your mouth. My only gripe was the aftertaste, but that's pretty typical with raw salmon! - Matcha Painkiller (3.5/5): it was Happy Hour ($7) so I thought why not! I could taste some matcha but I wish I had gone for a more fruity drink. The taste of alcohol wasn't masked very well, and I wasn't a fan of how creamy the drink was; I guess I learned what I don't like in a cocktail that day, but at least I got to try it. - Hando egg dessert (5/5): comes free of charge at the end of the meal. Pretty tasty, a nice spongy texture. Service (5/5): Pretty good! Our waiter was accommodating and open to answering questions. Ambiance (3.5/5): this place is a little hidden and is tucked around a little corner and doesn't help that it was surrounded by neighborhoods so it was lowkey. Since the place was tight, there wasn't much seating so my friends & I had to wait 25 min. to be seated. I'd describe the setting as a bar/omakase-style environment. The sushi chefs and the bartender will be in the center, and the chairs for customers are surrounding that area, which was interesting. Though I understand the look they were going for, I don't find the seating arrangement ideal if you're eating out with a group, I found it a bit hard to socialize. However, I did find it interesting how the chefs will serve your food one at a time rather than all at once.

Yelp
My friend was visiting from Dallas and wanted to try Handos. We arrived around 3 pm because I really wanted her to try the geso karaage (unfortunately, only available during happy hours). It was a full house but we were able to get seated within 15 min of waiting. The staff were really kind and welcoming upon arrival. My friend and I both thought the rice to fish ratio was off and can barely taste the fish. The sashimi was fresh but nothing too spectacular the highlight of the sashimi was the pickled wasabi. The green muscle skewers were chewy. I felt like the staff didn't really give us much attention after we placed our order. The party next to us was given better service than my friend and I. We had to ask for our water to be refilled because no one came to refill our water through our meal.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and it did disappoint. The food was just ok and the service was almost nonexistent. I had to constantly ask for everything. The location was small and uninviting. It was clean, well lit and appear to cater to a young crowd.

Yelp
We haven't been here since we moved three years ago and so I decided to give them another try since they were still in business and to me that means that something is going in the right direction. I ordered the scallop Bento box because the sushi options sounded the most delicious to me and the entire box was so good. Now, if you are planning on being really, really full, then this is probably not the lunch for you, but I am, almost extremely full after this, and everything was so tasty from the sushi rice, which was perfectly seasoned to the scallops which also had grilled lemons on there that you could squeeze on top to get all of the flavor to the sushi roll with the oyster flavor burst in every bite. The matchstick salad was also perfectly tangy and provided that acid balance for the food. They have a Houston restaurant weeks menu that I didn't try because I was confused on the offerings (don't judge) but I will definitely be back and more so when I have an actual job. For now that was a great taste of the place and perfect for studying.

Yelp
Sushi here is a little different but great . The wait was crazy be my server forgot to put in my order not cool not sure how he forgot I was there if he was right by me . So service wasn't quick for me and the ambiance was chill . Great sushi great drink selection and not long wait as long as your server doesn't forget about your order .

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night and was super excited to finally try Hando! The parking lot is VERY limited and you'd have to wait for a spot to open up. This restaurant doesn't take reservations as well, so I went ahead and put my name on the list at the host stand and waited for 30-45 minutes. The music is super loud to where our party has trouble talking to each other and our server taking our order. However, the food came out pretty fast as the chef makes it right in front of you and place it one at a time on your board. My favorite dishes are definitely the wagyu gyoza and this roll that they has on the special menu. I forgot what the exact name was but it had shrimp in it and it had a nice kick in it. Additionally, the spicy tuna one. My least favorites were the crab options and the shrimp katsu; it didn't taste authentic and could be skipped out on. Overall, I'm so happy I finally tried this place. The tab came out to be $70 for 2 people, and tbh we didn't really leave the restaurant full, but content; which is the whole concept of these type of places. Nonetheless, I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Easy 5 stars for this wonderful experience. Solo self care date to try something new and stumbled upon this place in the heights. Brightly lit kitchen/bar with a great ambiance and atmosphere. This is not a large restaurant and reservations are recommended but since I was alone, I was accommodated quickly. I sat at the bar area but there was a back room which seemed to have more casual, lower table seating. Highly recommend the bar. This is a hand rolled sushi bar with a great menu! I wanted to try so much! I was told the best value was to get a full service which is 3,4 or 5 rolls. These cannot be changed or substituted but I think the selections were perfect. I got the 4 rolls; fried oyster, delish. Salmon, not a fan of cold salmon but still good. Blue crab, very tasty! And spicy tuna, chefs kiss! The staff was amazing and very on top of taking care of everyone without making the place seem "busy" if that makes sense. I loved that they had purse hooks under the bar. I did try to connect to WiFi but I didn't see it pop up so I didn't try nor did I ask. Restrooms were fairly clean. Single units for his and hers. Bar space was kept very clean at all times and they put your sushi on a platter directly in from of you. I feel their prices were extremely fair! The full service actually saves you money as individual sushi was between $5-10. In total I spent for myself (did not have a drink) under $30. Amazing! There is also a designated parking lot about 60 feet to the right of the restaurant where you can park for free. Loved this so much. Will absolutely return. Seemed like a great date spot .

Yelp
I use to love LOVE this place when it first opened and in subsequent years. Much has changed. I think what I'd mainly want to mention is portion control. The hand rolls ingredients are not proportional and it's ruining the flavors. Way too much rice. Almost way too much everything. Also service could improve. That's all.

Yelp
Have been hearing about this place for years and finally went tonight. Hand rolls were 10/10 for me so fresh and delicious, the blue crab hand roll and the shrimp katsu HR were my personal favorites. Service was incredible they were checking on us constantly and chefs were so nice they make the HRs in front of you. There is not much seating inside, there is only bar top seating. Parking lot is also pretty small with limited spaces. Happy hour is from 3-6pm and cocktails are $7 and bar eats $5. This is definitely going to become a regular spot for me I can't wait to return!

Yelp
This is my first time trying Hando! Food- got the three cut roll set and softshell crab set. The three cut rolls that is very basic with minimal ingredients. It was tasty nonetheless, and I still love all sushi. The soft shell crab roll set was however quite ridiculous. There is no soft shell crab in the role at all. What is quality of sushi being priced pretty average to average high I would not return. Service - I got this as a takeout and I do love the paper box and the presentation Ambiance - never went in person but if the sushi is off this quality and price it would be hard to convince me to visit in person. I've always been told this is a handrolls competition place to Handies duozo but this experience was a disappointment

Yelp
The food was exceptional. My top choices were the Vegetable Boa, yellowtail hand roll, and the Quiet Storm cocktail. The host and chef/servers at the sushi bar were very attentive. They even anticipated my needing a knife. Gurrrl! I felt welcomed the moment I walked in. The bar next door was another story. Kanpai Blub I was underwhelmed with the service provided by bartender Kira, who displayed a sense of self-importance and a pretentious demeanor, responding rudely and dismissively to our questions. That side of the establishment has the atmosphere of a singles bar, with loud music and dim lighting that lacks adequate illumination.

Yelp
It is a small restaurant with only bar seats. It will be tough to have a party of more than 3 people. There is limited parking too. I had the HRW lunch menu. Wagyu gyozas for appetizers, and for the second course I had the spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon hand rolls. The wagyu gyozas were good. Filling was tender but slightly oily. Filling to skin ratio was perfect. For the hand rolls, they were wrapped beautifully. I appreciate the way they wrap the seaweed paper in at the end of the hand roll to prevent any ingredients falling out from the bottom. The sushi rice was perfect. The fish in the hand rolls could be more as the amount of rice to fish was like ten fish in a sea. The spicy tuna wasn't spicy. The nikiri in the yellowtail and salmon hand rolls made the hand rolls flavorful and tasty. Overall it was a good first time experience.

Yelp
Oh my goodness one of the best places we've eaten at this year! Came for HRW. Small cozy environment, everyone sits at the bar. Not ideal for large groups but great for date night. The octopus skewers were my favorite: cooked perfectly, not too hard and chewy but soft and tasty. Each handroll were so tasty and packed tight, we were so full off of our 3 rolls. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. At the end of the meal was a complimentary dessert. Hubby and I had a fantastic time and will definitely be returning!

Yelp
SOLID SUSHI SPOT. The flavors are so fresh and crisp. The quality is unbeatable. It took me too long to try this spot, but I'm so glad I did. I did order takeout for movie night, but even the takeout sushi was incredible! I am always nervous to try any new sushi spot since I'm allergic to fish, but they had ample seafood (non-fish) options and no cross-reaction. WHICH IS HUGE FOR ME!! I absolutely love sushi, but I'm so limited in my options. I am so so ecstatic to add Hando at the top of my sushi list!

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of dining at both Hando locations in Houston, and there's a reason I keep coming back! While their happy hour options are tempting, I recommend venturing beyond them to explore the full menu--there's a variety of unique rolls and fresh fish that are absolutely worth trying, especially when bundled together. If you have a hearty appetite, be sure to order several hand rolls. They may not be as filling as a large poke bowl, so plan accordingly if you tend to have a bigger appetite. The dining experience at Hando is both intimate and communal. You'll likely find yourself seated next to others at the bar, with chefs preparing your rolls right before your eyes. It's a bit like a sushi-focused Benihana, but in a cozy, shared space with fellow food lovers. If you're up for some casual camaraderie and a close-up view of the sushi-making process, Hando is the perfect spot!

Yelp
Some friends and I went to Hando for an Omakase early dinner and had an absolute blast! The rolls were hand rolled to perfection and they have fixed sets that make it easy to choose what to eat if you can't decide. My favorite was the Blue Crab roll - it had a blue crab mix, yuzu tobiko and micro cilantro, so good! I also got the yellow tail sashimi which was very fresh and tasty and we shared lamb and scallops skewers. Drinks were also refreshing and we all enjoyed every single thing we ordered. At the end, we got the cutest little free Tamagoyaki with Hando imprinted on it. Staff were nice, the restaurant was clean and pricing was quite reasonable. I'll go back and I definitely recommend checking them out.

Yelp
Came in for happy hour on Sunday which runs from 3-6 pm. Was seated immediately, ordered a potato croquette, geso (squid) karaage, a scallop hand roll. I got the audacity and my partner got the silent storm for drinks. Each dish was around 5 dollars and each drink was 7$. Given that price, hard to beat the quality. The hand roll was so good I had to get a second one. Ambiance was nice, smoother but lively music playing, everyone is seated in a sushi bar style. Great deal for happy hour would come again

Yelp
Got the three pieces set and some of their appetizers for happy hour. Really liked the squid karaage - very fragrant with a nice crunch - but sadly small portion. As for the rolls, I love love love all of them, but especially the blue crab. Every single roll was pillowy and soft, and the seaweed breaks off perfectly with every bite, no matter how small your bite is. Four stars because it is pricey (I was still hungry) and because it is a bit inconvenient to get a spot here (no reservations, first come first serve, place completely packed at 5:30pm since HH ends at 6pm).

Yelp
Okay so I don't do repeats because there are so many restaurants to try but I did go here twice. First time because we just tried it and second time to show a vegetarian this joint and he also loved it. I appreciated the speed/customer service of the food and their ending sweet with their printed logo. We probably ate like 8-10 hand rolls each but I'm sure the average person would be full off 4-6? We eat a lot. We also had their appetizers which I did not care for so much. It was okay?

Yelp
Service was excellent, we had AB. Drinks were awesome, atmosphere was great. Hand rolls were okay, food was good but not the best. Definitely fun to go with your friends during happy hour.

Yelp
Went her one day for dinner. Such a small but cute place. Had a small wait...so I grabbed a drink next door at the bar and some appetizers. Once we got the sat...everything we ordered was delicious! It came out quickly. And I can't wait to go back again!

Yelp
Hello world, Hando offers a delightful sushi experience with its standout Ocean Trout Hand Roll stealing the show. The ambiance is captivating, creating an immersive dining atmosphere. Additionally, adjacent to Hando is a chic bar, adding to the allure and making it a must-visit spot for those with some leisure time to spare. Thanks, R

Yelp
I came to Hando's on a whim for dinner. It was really chill vibes and seemed to be a good mix of regulars and newcomers. I had a steak and egg maki, scallop skewers, and a yellow maki. The food was really filling and flavorful. My favorite was the yellow tail maki. The cake at the end was a really nice touch as well. They have a good selection of vegetarian items which I would be interested to try with my daughter. I also kept hearing different music from what was playing and found out there is a speakeasy (with a front window) connected with a different drink menu.

Yelp
Love Hando, a must visit! They have HH daily from 3-6pm, even on weekends! Great spot for date night. This location has an attached cocktail bar called Kanpai club. When you enter Hando, it's on the left, behind the red door. Ordered the ocean trout handroll, curry croquette, and geso karaage. Loved the geso karaage, one of the best fried squid appetizers I've had, the aioli was light and refreshing paired really well with it! The service was great as well, waiter was very attentive and gave us good recs. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Delicious, fresh hand rolls I went during lunchtime and I got the lunch special! For $21, I got a curry coquette (potato katsu) and three handrolls!! The potatoes were so delicate and crispy, and not oily at all from the frying! For the handrolls, I got the spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon.. they were are SO good. The fish was so good and melts in your mouth!!! The service was also quick and the staff was attentive! They also give you a complementary tamago at the end which was so light and airy. 10/10 will come back!

Yelp
I was here for restaurant week and was not disappointed. The portions are a bit small but the flavor profile is there. Service was pretty good, but I was a bit confused as to why there was a whole section of the bar that was empty and they decided to fill up one area very fully so patrons were shoulder to shoulder. The hand rolls were great. Nothing earth shattering but very well done. The next door bar seemed like it was busy too, so I think I should return for a group gathering and do dinner/drinks after and make a night out of it. Overall great experience. Would return.

Yelp
Wow this is the best sushi in Houston especially if you consider the price! Fantastically crispy seaweed in the hand rolls and fun apps like the oysters pictured. Very flavorful. The cooked skewers of meat are great too but the hand rolls are over the top - raw or cooked it's all delicious. My favorite place for sushi. Not good for groups - it's a small counter so come alone or with just one or two others.

Yelp
Great go to for good handroll sushi. Ambiance is great and styling fits the mood. Limited seats and parking can be a pain, but fairly common in some areas of the heights. Service is good. Highly recommend any specials or their oyster roll.

Yelp
A very small restaurant with probably 20 seats around the bar. We met some friends here and were lucky to find 4 spots during lunch time. I will say that I was very impressed with the food here. I love their concept of just focusing on delicious hand rolls and a couple of skewers versus a huge sushi menu. The menu here isn't large but I'm pretty positive that everything you order would be delicious. I ordered the 4 piece and absolutely loved the salmon. I also paired it with one of their Japanese lagers and it was just a fabulous quick lunch. My boyfriend and I were also really impressed by our server's beer knowledge as she suggested several others to our group based on our preferences. I would definitely recommend this place if you're wanting a quick, light lunch.

Yelp
My cousin from out of town suggested going to this place because she was craving sushi and I figured it'd be a good place to try since I'd heard alot of good things about it from friends! Their parking lot is VERY small and goes one way so I had to park somewhere else because there were no parking spaces when I arrived. They have some street parking and areas in the back as well but just have to be careful because there are private areas and other restaurant parking that's marked off. When I arrived with my boyfriend we let them know we were waiting for 2 others so they said we could go to the bar next door to get a drink while we wait. They would prepare 4 seats for us once the other 2 arrived. It was a hidden bar that was connected by a door next to the host stand which was really cool! You can also enter the bar by going outside and directly next door to the restaurant. Both my boyfriend and I ordered cocktails and closed our tab and my cousin just arrived right at that moment. I waited until i got my drink and we all went next door again to Hando to let the host know our party was complete and ready to be seated. Sitting at the table, it goes all the way around the room with all the chefs in the center so you can see them make the rolls directly in front of you. It was really cool! For appetizers, we ordered multiple things to share and try as well. Then we decided to order a variety of rolls. My cousins ordered multiple rolls to share while my boyfriend I ordered individual rolls for each of us because we wanted to try different types of fishes. Everything was delicious that I had there and it's quite enjoyable! You're paced through the meal since you have to wait until the next roll is made and put on the board in front of you. Service was great as well with picking up empty plates, refilling drinks and getting orders. There are multiple waiters that walk around and check on you throughout the meal and it's fun to socialize next to the people on either side of you as well! I would definitely come back here again as a date night or by myself! For large groups of 2-4 people it's not too bad but any bigger then it's kind of hard to socialize to the people on the end because the table is linear so you can really only talk to the people next to you. Pricing is fair for sushi and the service is great! I only wish they had something sweet to end the dinner with but unfortunately nothing. Overall, good experience. Come early because when we left there were lots of people waiting at the door and outside for a seat so this place can get crowded.

Yelp
Forever my favorite sushi spot! :) Service is delicate and paid incredible attention to detail. The little bread handed out at the end is always v sweet
