"For a new Midtown lunch (or a casual dinner) option, check out Handroll Bar Rolling. Unsurprisingly, they specialize in handrolls, and their sets range from four rolls for $23, to six for $35. You can order a la carte too, and they’ve got a bunch of little bites like purple sweet potato and shrimp tempura." - will hartman

Handroll Bar Rolling is fantastic! From the moment I walked in, everything was superb. The trendy aesthetic, the attentive and friendly staff, along with the elite food made this restaurant really stand out for me! The hand roll set, the karaage, and the beef udon were highlights for me. They go above and beyond here and I will be returning ASAP for the quality, service, and fantastic value this place brings to every meal!

After a long day of shopping in Midtown, I was starving and craving handrolls. A quick Google search led me to Handroll Bar Rolling, and I’m so glad it did! We started with edamame—hot, nicely salted, and super satisfying. Then we tried their fried Purple Okinawa Sweet Potato, which was light and crispy with a mayo dip that wasn’t too heavy. It was a great little appetizer. The Chicken Karaage was another winner, perfectly fried and super crunchy, and the shrimp tempura was light and paired with a tasty aioli. Since they’re famous for their handrolls, we had to try them. We ordered the Signature 6 Handroll Set (Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Scallop, Crab, and Crunch Spicy Tuna) and the 5 Vegan Set (Cucumber, Avocado, Soybean Beef, Burdock, and Mushroom). Everything was fresh and rolled to order, with crispy nori and flavorful fillings. The highlight for me was the fried Ebi Potato—crispy, light, and packed with flavor. We also tried the udon soup noodles. I had the Beef Udon, and the noodles had the perfect chewy texture. My mom got the Shrimp Tempura Udon, and I really appreciated that they served the tempura on the side so it stayed crispy instead of getting soggy in the broth. We sat at a table instead of the counter, which made it easier for my family to share everything. The service was attentive and friendly without being over the top. For drinks, we tried the Yuzu Highball, which had just enough alcohol to give me a buzz. So refreshing! Overall, this place is a gem. The food is delicious, the service is great, and the vibe is casual but still feels special. If you’re in Midtown and looking for a good dinner spot, definitely check it out!

As soon as we walked in, we felt the warm welcome of the staff. Which is a huge plus for us! The atmosphere is very modern and casual. The prices of the handrolls are very reasonable. We ordered the 6 handroll set for $38, sashimi, ebi potato shirmp and we came home really full. We loved everything! The seafood were served fresh and yummy. Will come back soon with friends!

The owner visited our table and she was super welcoming, sweet, friendly, and hospitable!! I went with my girl friend for brainstorming and absolutely enjoyed every bit of it!! Google
Loved our dinner here last week, great hospitality and solid menu. Super fresh handrolls, made to order right in front of you. They also have a nice assortment of Japanese apps dishes like tempura, shrimp, hamachi carpaccio and beef udon. My fave handrolls were the spicy salmon, scallop and eel. ✅ 4 handroll set $24 ✅ 5 hendroll set $30 ✅ 6 handroll set $36

Google
Fairly new with a beautiful sushi bar and dining room with great handroll sets. The appetizers were great too, we enjoyed the Ebi potato, karaage and Okinawa purple potato fries. The udon is very good too! There is a handroll +udon lunch special for very reasonable prices.

Google
Great alternative to the mainstream hand roll places. Prices are super competitive. I got the 5 handroll set and two additional rolls which was the crunch spicy tuna and crab. They get 3 stars because their seaweed is awkwardly chewy. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and would come back. Staff was super on top of things. Wish nothing but the best for this restaurant.

Google
Good spot for a drop in lunch with decent handroll options. They allow you to swap any of the handrolls in the set menu as well, which is nice of them. I loved their karage as a side dish. Service is quick and efficient.

Yelp
The ambience was great, with plenty of seating. We did not struggle to find a table for Friday lunch for a group of three. The decor was modern and suited the place well. Service was friendly and efficient. I think the food is really good value, and you get a decent amount for the lunch special. I don't think it would have been worth it at full price. Everything pictured in my review was part of the $28 lunch deal, excluding tip. The rolls are served all at once rather than one by one, and there is a plastic wrap for hygiene on the rolls which can be slightly fiddly. The rolls are also on the smaller side. I don't really enjoy spice so I substituted the spicy salmon for use regular salmon, and it ended up being my favourite roll. The udon was slightly over cooked so that the noodles were softer than I liked, but it paired nicely with the rolls. I wouldn't say that the food was exceptional, but it was pretty solid.

Yelp
Came here for an early dinner on Saturday night and was able to be seated immediately. I ordered the six handroll set and honestly was not impressed. The fish was fine but nothing to write home about. It wasn't terrible but also was bland or didn't scream very fresh. The spicy tuna was the only standout that I enjoyed. The portion size of each roll was relatively small. The rice was room temperature but would've been nicer if it was warm. I didn't order anything else and I did leave hungry. Service is lacking. I didn't see our server after ordering.

Yelp
I went for the hand roll lunch special, and it was really delicious and fun. I sat at the bar and as I was enjoying hot tea and miso soup, hand rolls were given to me right after they were rolled, ensuring the freshest of fish and the crunchiest of seaweed. The staff were all very friendly too. It was a little out of the way for me to get to, but if I'm in the area I'd love to dine here again!

Cindy Z.

Yelp
I saw a deal for their lunch special, so my friend and I came here for a Friday lunch. This includes 4 handrolls and a yuba udon for $28. The handrolls included tuna, spicy salmon, yellowtail, and crab. The portions are a bit small and didn't filly fill up the seaweed, but it was still good. The fish are freshly minced up for an easy bite although I know many complain that the crab is shredded imitation crab (but not a big deal for me). I like that the combo comes with the udon, which helps make you full. The udon is silky and broth is heartwarming and clean, especially on a cold day. The entire meal wasn't anything too special, but it's a pretty good lunch deal when you're in the area if you're not looking for something more than just handrolls. I thought the personal mini soy sauces were adorable and loved all the dinnerware. Note: if you want to get your handrolls altogether and presentedly nicely, get a table. Otherwise, you're served the rolls rolled up one by one at the counter.

Yelp
Stopped by here as I was walking by and decided to try it. The decor is modern and minimalistic which I love. The staff is also very friendly. Tried the scallop hand roll and the snow crab hand roll. The rolls were very small but the scallop was delicious. The snow crab was definitely out of a can and not worth it. The wasabi was also very overpowering. I was glad I tried it and the quality is not too bad.

Yelp
We got the 5 hand roll set and a bottle of sake. First off, the hand rolls were amazing--- this might be my favorite hand roll place in NY! I liked this place more than the other famous hand roll places I've been in the city. The fish was fresh, the rice was seasoned well, and the seaweed was crispy. Vibe was very casual and service was great. I'll definitely be back when I'm craving handrolls!

Jenny Z.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst handroll spot I have been to in the city in terms of fish quality. Service was fast, but the restaurant was also pretty empty on a Thursday night. They don't take reservations but should be pretty easy to walk in. I got the 4 handroll set and glad I did not get more. The fatty tuna was really not super fresh, and tasted like it was from the freezer. The crab was also imitation crab meat and quite spicy. Salmon was okay but flavorless, and the yellowtail was good (not excellent, but good enough r to be the redeeming fish of the meal). The ginger on the side is also not very fresh at all, which is a reflection of the quality of the fish.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
They have a solid lunch deal! My friend and I walked in on a friday for lunch and had no problem getting a table. I really appreciate the aesthetics of their plating. The food was good, so if you're in the area I would recommend.

Yelp
Not great fish quality and expensive for what it is. The crab is not real crab--it is imitation crab that looks like cheese. It did not taste great. All the other fish were also all mashed up and some bites there were not any fish in my handroll.

Yelp
Right near Koreatown with no wait is a solid option - if you encounter the wild line at Kazunori, head over here to have a much calmer, elevated experience. We were able to walk in on a Sunday right in time to miss a thunderstorm and was able to be seated at the bar seating promptly. You can order via the paper slip with a set or a la carte. The service is good, my waitress was very sweet and patient. The overall decor is plush, gold, marble, lovely lightly and so elegant. The music doesn't match 100% and one loud pair of girls were speaking over everyone very audibly but once they left, the setting was peaceful. My favorite standout was the spicy salmon, as was my friends. It had a great flavor and actually a little spicy. I was looking for ward so much to the scallop but they added a lot of black pepper and also crunch which to me totally overpowers the scallop - I was so sad. The yellowtail and toro were good, nothing to complain about. The rice was decent, not like the warm rice elsewhere but good. Definitely worth trying - good date spot, I didn't feel rushed to leave at all!

Evelyn N.

Yelp
3.5/5 stars 6 rolls for $36 Me and two friends were able to get seated at the bar around 7:30 on a Wednesday night. They do not take reservations. It was packed and service was kind of slow. We had to flag down a waitress for water. And the chef forgot one hand roll for one of our friends. Our collective favorites were the scallop, yellowtail and toro. The last roll -spicy tuna- was super spicy we all choked and had to down water. Spicy but GOOD. Don't feel like any of the rolls were super amazing but would maybe return in the future when the hype dies down. Upon leaving we wanted to use the restroom and wash our hands but their bathroom was flooded. I really hope they fix it soon because upon entering with no signage of "out of order" we all lost our appetite seeing that flood and overflowing toilet.

Theresa L.

Yelp
So delicious and super friendly service! We came here because the original place we wanted to go was closed, and this was nearby and the perfect substitution. Their sets are reasonably priced, and the flavors they incorporate into their hand rolls are good too! It was very slow when we went, so hopefully their business picks up soon. The decor of the bar was super modern and gorgeous!

Katarina K.

Yelp
As fans of Kazunori and Nami Nori, we had to try this spot, especially since it's so close to where I get my haircut. We sat at a table, so all the rolls came out at once in plastic wraps to keep the seaweed from getting soggy--making the experience feel like a blend between Kazunori and Nami Nori. They do use more rice in the rolls, though. The fried chicken was fresh and amazing, and the karaage was really good too. The udon broth could have been hotter. Friendly staff. Overall, a cute place!

Deanna P.

Yelp
So glad I found this spot on a walk in NY while I happened to be craving sushi. I am normally not a hand roll girlie but enjoyed this meal very much, probably because they were bite sized. I sat at the bar and the server was sweet. The guy making the sushi didn't seem to want to be spoken to, but alas he made me some bomb rolls. The inside was clean and cute. Try the spicy tuna crunchy roll!

Ashley J.

Yelp
Staff was super friendly. Loved the miso soup and edamame. Too much rice paper and not enough filling in the hand rolls.

Tansy W.

Yelp
The hand rolls were pretty good and came out relatively quickly. The dumplings also weren't bad, but pretty much your average steamed dumplings. Fried chicken and the shrimp tempura were similarly decent, though the tempura was poorly battered (way too thick). Not a bad spot if you're just coming for hand rolls and already in the neighborhood!

Myrisse D.

Yelp
Such a lovely spot The service was excellent , the staff is very friendly polite non invasive The restaurant is new so it's very clean tastefully decorated The service is classy Now the hand roll sushi were so nicely done , fresh , clean

Jean H.

Yelp
I'll start with the negative part of my experience at this restaurant . Came at lunch time for the $28 lunch special ,but was disappointed to see the auto 25% tip when we received the bill. Not sure I would go back because of this. We were a party of 6 and undertstand the standard 20% but 25%? The 4 rolls and bowl of udon is good proportion size. Hand rolls are good but nothing unique . Standard salmon or salmon spicy roll . Restaurant has great ambiance. Restaurant is clean , nice and classy .

Jessica L.

Yelp
Service was fast, hand rolls were fresh, and the restaurant was very clean. I got the 4 set roll which came with fatty tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and crab ($24). My favorite was the yellowtail. The fish was very smooth, tasted fresh, and the presentation was beautiful. Really enjoyed my experience here!

Julie S.

Yelp
Good hand rolls & very friendly staff. I enjoyed it but probably would have been better if I didn't do take out! Still happy with my meal after a long day walking around the city.

Tracy Y.

Yelp
We needed a place for a quick dinner and stumbled upon this handrail bar. We went with the five hand rolls set and the fried chicken. We also ended up ordering a couple more hand rolls because we were still hungry. Service could have been more attentive.

Andrea S.

Yelp
I had the 6 hand roll set and i liked the fatty tuna and yellowtail rolls the best. The last three hand rolls were kind of spicy so i didn't like those. It would be great if the hand rolls weren't spicy or if they want to have spicy rolls, make only one of the rolls spicy instead of half of them. The service is good and you even get individual water and soy sauce. I also liked the yuba udon which was tofu skin with udon.

Kelly H.

Yelp
the ratio of seaweed to rice / fish is way too high. the seaweed is also thick and the roll is so skinny so the ratio is just off. the prices are also not cheap compared to, say kazunori which is right down the block. wouldnt come back. honestly probably the worst one ive tried so far their lunch special also doesnt apply on sundays fyi. we ended up spending $45+ per person for lunch and was not even full also side note: we were the only ones there sunday lunch the entire time

Vivian L.

Yelp
The restaurant was relatively empty on a Friday night, and we were able to walk in and be seated immediately. The restaurant isn't that large, but there is a good amount of seating. The interior is new and modern. There were multiple chefs making hand rolls, so the service was fast. We were able to sit and enjoy our meal leisurely since it was not busy. The hand rolls aren't large, we both got 6 hand rolls, and I probably could've eaten more. I am happy that we were able to customize and pick what we wanted though in our sets. I tried the fatty tuna, yellowtail, salmon, scallop, crab. The yellowtail was my favorite and I got two of those! I probably wouldn't order the crab or fatty tuna again. In general the fish was fresh and the seaweed was crunchy, since they're made one at a time if you sit at the bar. However some of the rolls lacked flavor, and needed soy sauce. Overall this is a solid walk in option for hand rolls, but not the best quality hand rolls.

Minsung K.

Yelp
New sushi handroll bar on midtown Very fresh fish and great interior Definately come back

Nancy S.

Yelp
Great for a quick, yummy lunch! The service was great and the rolls were so delicious. They have a 4 roll special that comes with a soup. It was perfect!

Dina G.

Yelp
Surprising how good this place was. Very simple fare but really crispy Nori and fresh, high quality ingredients made it fabulous. It was loud -- they should definitely put some blankets or other sound dampening on the walls -- and while the decor is stark chic, the ambiance is lacking. Food was great though, I'd definitely go back.

Lolin L.

Yelp
New handroll spot in the city definitely worth trying out. We came for an early dinner on a weeknight and were seated at the bar right away. We each ordered the 6 roll set and an order or karaage to share. We were served super quickly, portions were pretty generous and the quality is fresh and good. Each handroll had enough flavor where we didn't even need to use the individual soy sauce bottle at each seat. Every seat also gets an individual bottle of water to refill their water cups which I thought was a nice touch. My personal favorite pieces were the scallop, and spicy tuna. Both flavored well and a touch of crunch. The space itself is very nice and clean. A pretty large bar and a few tables. Waitress was friendly and nice. Karaage was okay, not amazing but I've definitely had better. The crab hand roll in the set is imitation crabmeat, but they do have snow crab on the menu as well. The price is great for the quality, I will definitely be back.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Fish is super fresh. Handrolls are delicious (scallop, fatty tuna, yellowtail). Very clean - good, fun music. Wonderful service.

Wai C.

Yelp
Specialized soy sauce squirted bottle for hand roll. I got the 5 roll option. It was okay. Chicken wings pretty bland. Even with sauce on side. Beer -Kyoto yuzu lacked any pizzazz. Overall. Was mediocre

Megan S.

Yelp
So, Yelp recommends considering food, service, and ambiance on reviews. Fortunately, that's easy here. We found them on Yelp with only 8 reviews, but all 5 stars. We took a chance and brought our family here for dinner before a Broadway show. Authentic, unpretentious, and at a great price, Handroll hit the spot.

Casey D.

Yelp
Great place to eat, convenient location, reasonable price, will come back again. They just opened up, so there is promotion, Mon-Sat, 4 rolls+udon for $28.

Leorna L.

Yelp
Clean and comfortable, everything tasted as expected and really appreciated that they choose to serve filtered chilled water for their customers when many restaurants do not. Got the 5 hand roll set and it was just right for midday lunch.

Gaby G.

Yelp
Me and my family stopped in here for lunch after passing by. Fantastic food and amazing service! The fish quality was incredible.

jena k.

Yelp
I've been to a lot of handroll bars, but this one is the best!!! The fresh ingredients and attention to detail in each hand roll were impressive. The modern interior made for a relaxing dining experience. Definitely a must-visit spot in the city!

Aina P.

Yelp
Phenomenal hand rolls! Finally a quality sushi bar as good as Maki Maki, but lovely seating. Taking future clients there! Can't wait to go there again.

B R.

Yelp
This unassuming place serves some exceptional rolled sushi. Friendly service. Nice atmosphere, great place for excellent food!

Jonny N.

Yelp
Best handroll spot in the area hands down! Staff and restaurant are amazing! Come back every week bc the handrolls are so good!

Eujean C.

Yelp
Great food and great service!! Excellent quality fish, kid friendly options were perfect m (udon and chicken karaage)!

Mabel H.

Yelp
Arrived around 7 on a Thursday and were seated immediately. We each ordered the 6 roll set which was very fresh and tasty - these rolls might even be better than Kazunori! Our order of karage came out to be very small, maybe 6 pieces of tiny nuggets and the drinks were just average. Although the servers were very friendly, we were not offered water at all during our meal, maybe because we had ordered drinks but would have been nice to have water also.

Presley H.

Yelp
Such good food and amazing service, the employees were so sweet and I recommend this place to anyone going here its worth it! Good prices aswell, the restaurants atmosphere is very clean and pretty inside :)

Mr. P.

Yelp
Fabulous place with delicious food and fantastic service! Since it only opened a little while ago, my girlfriend was a little hesitant based on the few (albeit positive) reviews. We've eaten at many Japanese places and have traveled to Japan several times...they know what they're doing here. The hand rolls were all delicious, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. My young children ate the udon and loved it. The service was outstanding and our servers were very knowledgeable. If we lived in NYC this would easily become our regular place. I also appreciated the select menu with a focus on amazing taste and great ambiance. Stop what you're doing and come here for dinner. Loved it!

Lily S.

Yelp
Wow. This place was delicious! Affordable handrolls with super fresh fish that is up to par with Kazunori. Especially loved the handrolls that had some crunch to them! Service was amazing as well.
