"Murray Hill counter-service restaurant Handsome Rice gets a rosy review in the Times for its 'beautiful' Korean lunchboxes of galbi, or short rib that’s 'supple with sweet juices.'" - Carla Vianna

This has to be the best food I’ve had in a while. Handsome Rice is serving up modern Korean comfort food and it’s really good. I ordered the Handsome rice meal and Kim chi Mac and cheese. You get all Korean meats with this meal (Chicken, Short Rib, Rib Eye, And Pork) stacked on Korean purple rice with a salad on the side. My favorite meat had to be the rib eye. It was my first time trying purple rice and it was a really good base for this dish. The potatoes in the salad were so good. Covered in a pesto sauce and adding that refreshing taste.I love how the portions are just right and you get a healthy balance of protein, carbs, and veggies. Then the Kim chi mac and cheese was no joke. It wasn’t like your average mac and cheese. I love how they mixed Kim chi within the noodles. Korean fusion executed well. They’re a small shop but I love the aesthetic. Small inside then outside dining. This would be the perfect spot to eat in the spring summer. Service is on point. Shout out to the staff at Handsome Rice.

Eating at Handsome rice was such an fulfilling experience. It’s not typical Korean but it’s rather ‘advanced K-food’ that reaches out to greater American market. I’ve tried the Galbi, Janguh (sea eel) and Jeyuk and all of them were great — to be honest the Galbi and the eel were my favorite which were perfectly marinated. The people who prepared the meals there were great also. They seemed to working happily with such ownership. The chef Kim must be a good employer! haha. Looking forward to another visit which will be my 4th time for Handsome Rice when I’m in Manhattan next time. Oh their banana pudding was a pleasant surprise. Delicious! Overall, excellent food and experience. 셰프님 다음에 또 뵙겠습니다 ! :)

Google
With all of the amazing food in NYC, I always kick myself when I get conned by fake reviews. But that’s clearly what’s happening here with all of the flowery overzealous reviews saying this is the best Korean food in NYC. I trekked 45 minutes in 95 degree heat to get here and ordered the “combination” meal, which was inedible. It tasted old, gristly, fatty, sitting on top of fat-soaked rice. The vegetables were from the 1900’s. The side of dumplings were nominally better but no different from what you might buy from the freezer at the grocery store. So disappointing…

Google
I usually don't give 5 stars unless it's exquisite taste. I would give this burger 100 stars if possible. I like hamburgers. I love New York City's delicious homemade hamburgers so much that I've tried them all. I found the best burger of my life at Handsome Rice! The patty that softly wraps the mouth and the grill with fire flavor was enough to excite my eyes and taste, and the fresh vegetables seemed to care about my health. And the fragrant, crispy outside and soft inside of the French fries captured my heart. If you are traveling to New York or live in New York, it must be on your bucket list of must-try meals. I confidently and strongly recommend this Handsome Rice. Good Luck!

Google
Great for a quick lunch. This isn’t gourmet Korean food, but it’s delicious and reliable at a good price.

Google
It’s a takeout spot that happens to have some outdoor seating - but they don’t come out to give you the dish and they take a while to clean their trash so pretty much expect to self-serve all the way. The handsome combo with all the meats is a good way to try everything although the truth is that the galbi is the star of the meal. I’d just do that the next time I’m there!

Google
Very good Korean food and Korean inspired Burgers served in lunch/tiffin boxes to enjoy right there (outside seating) or take home. We loved the Kimchi, flagship Handsome rice (especially Jeyuk and Bulgogi) and of course the Handsome looking Handsome burger. Pork dumplings were also pretty good. Flavors were brilliant, meats and the burger were well done and we loved the taste. The portions and prices were decent. Due to the limited space, there is no table service and you will just need to order and wait. There is ample outdoor seating to eat the food right there though.

Google
Hands down one of the best places to get Korean food in NYC - the amazing flavors, the convenience, the affordability, and high quality of the food are matched with great service and a great aesthetic both inside and out! The Galbi was marinated better than most Korean BBQ places I’ve been to, as well as so tender. The Jeyuk was spicy without it being overwhelming, the perfect balance. Actually, everything in the boxed meal was perfectly balanced - each side had a purpose and enhanced the flavor of the meal. This is a great meal to eat on the go as well, and tastes great wherever and whenever you eat it (we ate in the car and it was delicious and was easy to eat). The food left us feeling super satisfied while not feeling heavy, and very happy! We will be coming back soon!!

Yelp
Nice place but the food i ordered simply never arrived... a problem! Don't rely on them if you're busy or hungry

Marla F.

Yelp
Awesome burger! Wow I took a chance on this spot because I was looking for a lettuce wrapped burger and even though it wasn't on the menu, I called and the sweet cashier told me they would accommodate that. And then comes my delivery order - a delicious and very flavorful lettuce wrapped double cheeseburger!! Made my day. The special onions they add to their burgers are really phenomenal. Fries could've used salt but I ordered the kimchee sauce for dipping and that was also fantastic. New go-to burger spot officially unlocked :)

Rebecca S.

Yelp
I did not want to review Handsome Rice for a long time because it's just SO good, I wanted to keep the secret to myself. All other Kalbi pales in comparison. Handsome rice's marinade, cook style and presentation are out of this world. I also love the other veggies it comes with, wish I could order just an extra side of the pickled veggies, but I always end up getting extra broccoli on the side because it is delicious too. Opt for the rice over the salad, I find the salad just arrived a wilted pile. Also the banana pudding is really good!

Yelp
We were visiting from Los Angeles and wanted to try Korean food at least once while we were in NYC. After browsing on Yelp, we thought this place looked unique from the photos for the burgers and the plates. It is a small business with only outdoor seating. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and luckily it wasn't busy at all that we were able to get a seat in one of the insulated tents. The handsome burger was solid - juicy and flavorful. Fries were okay - could have been a little crispier but not soggy, at least. The meats in the handsome rice were all excellent - marinated well and juicy, and combined well together with the different flavors and textures. The sauce that came with the dish was very rich and flavorful and really complimented the meal well. My main gripe would be that the doshirak tray is very small that the meats were overflowing. This made it very difficult to actually get to the purple rice that's below the stack of meat. I would have liked to have mixed the rice, sauce and the meat with the banchan (kinda like bibimbap) but there was just no room to do that, so I had to eat a lot of the meat first before I could actually get to the rice part. Maybe I should have asked for an extra bowl so that I could throw the entire meal in there and mix together but it didn't cross my mind at the time.

Yelp
Cute little place with outdoor seating but mostly geared toward takeout Service was super fast and we grabbed a spot for lunch. I can see how this would be a hit for office goers in the area Look to spend 20 ish on average with tax. We got the galbi and spicy pork - I mean not that you can go horribly wrong with Korean flavors, this place really did a great job. The meat was nicely seasoned and well cooked. The beef gal I was esp nice. Lots of meat for the price :) The fixings were pretty good - salad, purple rice, kimchi etc No frills, to the point excellent place in short

Regina X.

Yelp
Prices are fair and the food is delicious! Such a gem if you love a good burger or Korean fusion. Favorites are their Signature Handsome burger, Kimchi arancini and Creamy Kimchi sauce pasta. Perfect grab and go spot and there is also ample outdoor seating, covered and heated.

Ethan L.

Yelp
Uninspiring. Like others have mentioned, it's a very small burger. Sure the meat quality is good but the bun, bulky lettuce, and tomato were lacking. The Korean sauce was a boring sweetener that added nothing for actual flavor. It's a plain burger. Also noticed a chair outside was duct taped and missing a few wood slats, and a table that sank because it was missing some screws. Did the owner just give up?

Valerie N.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times, including during peak COVID and it's delicious! The price can be a bit high relative to the portion, but the quality is great. Their galbi is delicious and juicy. I also like their kimchi Mac and cheese...I just keep wishing the portion was bigger! This place has great takeaway options and they're always friendly and nice!

Yelp
Was visiting from out of town and decided to stop here after seeing it on Yelp. Handsome Rice is located on a rather quiet street, which is a nice break from the busy city. The goal was a quick and delicious snack before our flight, so we chose the Pork Dumplings and the Spinach and Kale Dumplings. We ordered and had a seat in the covered outdoor area, and our food was ready shortly after! These were by far the best dumplings I had ever had, they had just the right amount of crunch, the flavor was amazing, and the sauce was the perfect addition to the dumplings. Would definitely have loved to give more of their menu a try but sadly it will have to wait till the next time I return to NYC! Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Handsome Rice which is this cute little hole in the wall that offers an exceptional take on Korean cuisine, and their bulgogi is a standout dish. The beef is perfectly marinated, tender, and flavorful, with a delightful balance of sweet and savory notes. The dish is accompanied by fresh, crisp vegetables and fluffy purple rice, creating a harmonious and satisfying meal. The portion size is generous, and the presentation is thoughtful, adding to the overall dining experience. Handsome Rice's bulgogi is a must-try for anyone on the go, or here to stay to enjoy the weather with their outdoor seating arrangement.

Morlene C.

Yelp
I could see a place like this that specializes in Korean lunch boxes thriving in a more office dense location than on the residential block its on, but it has been open long enough to prove their formula works. Lunch is priced reasonably at $12-$16 for most boxes, and comes with a protein, rice, salad, and a side. There are a couple of vegetarian options, but many more if you're an omnivore. I wish they offered seafood options, and I wish the portions were more generous. I prefer a place like KOBA a few blocks away on 31st and Park, which offers much more generous meals at the same price point.

Arturo F.

Yelp
who makes bibimbap without meat. This was unclear from the menu. The salad tasted unwashed and chemical. Gross and an absolutely inedible meal. What a waste of money.

Brant G.

Yelp
Straight disappointment, the food is very mediocre, and not impressive at all. I had high expectation, since the food looked rather unique, but it wasn't. Since this is New York, the restaurant is very small and the sit down area is actually outside in a tent. The service was good, but I would consider this too expensive for what it really is.

Tina G.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place to me and I got to try their handsome burger, truffle fries, mandu, and kimchi pasta. The restaurant is a small hole in the wall Shop but has a separate outdoor seating area. Everything on the menu is relatively affordable, nothing more than $12. However, the portions are all pretty small, so you'll have to order multiple items to be full. My favorite were the burger, the truffle fries and the mandu. The pasta sizes were 1/4 the size of regular pasta portions in NYC. The workers here are also friendly, and give tou suggestions for the menu.

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
What an interesting place. Burgers but also Korean food? I didn't really try any of the main dishes here - I was mainly really intrigued by the side dish of the kimchi cream pasta for $6.50. You order at the counter and pay - tap capable. There's plenty of outdoor seating - it doesn't seem all that clean/well-maintained but it's fine enough. They call out when your order is ready and then you can pick up and eat at one of the tables - I don't believe there is table service. Run by actual Koreans. Kimchi Cream Pasta A wonderful dish - too amazing to be a side dish almost. You get a good amount for a side dish. Nice, high quality macaroni with ridges that hold the sauce well. Actual pieces of kimchi mixed in. A very light amount of cream. The kimchi flavor is warm and soothing, not too spicy yet not too mild. A wonderful fusion of cultural flavors. Fries Too much breading. Too salty. But nicely crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Charlene S.

Yelp
I was excited to try Handsome Rice because of the stellar reviews, but I was a litle disappointed. This is a small grab and go spot that has a variety of Korean and fusion dishes. I went with the "Handsome Rice," which is the meat lover box that comes with Galbi, Bulgogi, and Chicken, with a side of rice and pickles. The portion unfortunately was pretty small. I finished the whole thing and still could eat more. At $20 per plate, I think the portion should definitely have been bigger! The meat itself was tasty, but I felt like the marinade was a bit too sweet. I probably won't be back unfortunately because the price is just too high for the portion you get.

Dannie W.

Yelp
I gave low rating as I'm disappointed. The menu of bibimbap looks very good. But what I got is like a different version. Had I known the bibimbap is like this, I would not have bought it.

David A.

Yelp
Fast and friendly. Order first and they'll call you when ready. They've got open air dining and covered outdoor dining, but do mostly takeout. Think modern Korean cuisine. They've got Korean rice dishes and burgers along with bonchon. Ordered the bulgogi dish. Marinated sweet beef is served on top of purple rice. Comes with pickled vegetables and potato salad. Perfect portion. Very filling.

J M.

Yelp
Really good burgers. REALLY good. The patties are only 4oz, so if you're hungry, get the double. The Korean bbq sauce tasted like teriyaki and it was delicious. The potato bun was awesome. Highly recommend.

Tsvika K.

Yelp
So under the radar of their (fantastic) menu there is an excellent dish- Kimchi pasta . Creamy , slightly spicy and delicious. Just for this unique flavorable dish it's worth getting there. Highly recommended!

Stephanie N.

Yelp
Very cute place that is fast casual take out. I had the vegan burger and fries. Ordered another plate to go. Great food and very tasty, located in a quiet corner of this neighborhood. Basically it looks like a takeout counter but cuter. They have all sorts of Bento box style foods.

Doug W.

Yelp
Can't say I'm thrilled by any of this $30 meal; some aspects of it were alright but at this price and this high a star rating on Yelp, I'm surprised and not pleasantly that all the meat was dry, the quality of service lacked and the overall first impression was such a let down. The salad of potato beet and cauliflower might have been the best part as the pickling in the beet melded amazingly with the wonderful roast on the potato but it was served with a thimble full of sauce and when asking if they had any sauces the guy snapped back "I already put sauce in there" I knew what I was in for and sure enough I was right. I'd still go back n try the burgers though.

Ashlyn R.

Yelp
Get the double cheese! One of the best burgers! Absolutely delish. Has a sweet teriyaki sauce, and the beef patties are insanely good. High quality ingredients.

Katie A.

Yelp
delicious!!! i've been dying to try this spot ever since i moved to the area a few months ago... and surely, they were as good as everyone hyped it up to be! the kimchi cream pasta was not too heavy and had the right amount of spice, and the galbi was perfectly marinated- reminded me of my moms cooking. they gave generous portions with purple rice, along with potato salad and lotus root on the side. I thoroughly enjoyed this meal after a killer workout. I'll be back with some friends for more :) Next time I'll have to try the banana pudding, per a customers recommendation! They also sell draft beer, seltzers and non alcoholic drinks here. available on ChowNow and other platforms!

Derrick C.

Yelp
Cheeseburger (4/5): surprisingly good - juicy with good flavor Fries with Truffle sauce (3.75/5): the truffle flavor wasn't as strong and the truffle sauce was on the thicker side. Short Ribs (3.5/5): these were okay (sauce on the darker side) but I wouldn't get this the next time I came here. The shop has cool decor and vibe. I'd go back for the burger.

Gambhir o.

Yelp
I like galbi, beef short rib. It's my first time. foods was delicious. $18 galbis is reasonable. burger was kick. So good to me. I will be back!

Sunny K.

Yelp
Burgers were good! The meat was pretty good and I like how it had a Korean bbq flavor to it. Only complaint is I wish the burgers were bigger. It was a bit overpriced for tiny burgers to be around 6-7 dollars. Fries were meh. Got the truffle fries but it was just regular fries with truffle sauce which was okay.

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
Great place to grab a balanced lunch that is delicious and flavorful. The food is cooked to order so be prepared to wait 10 mins for your order and there is limited seating area. Probably better for takeaway or if you're just looking for a quick bite. Galbi - marinated for 24 hours and delicious! The purple rice, potato salad and lotus root were unique and different from other places. Bibimbap - I like how the rice comes separately from the vegetables. Each component was carefully prepared and presented well. Truffle fries - Truffle Aioli is amazing and basically like crack. The fries they use have a coating instead of normal plain potato fries.

Lola S.

Yelp
I stopped by this place on the way home from work and was pleasantly surprised. The workers are kind and efficient. The food is wonderful! I'll be back the next time I'm in that part of town.

Domily A.

Yelp
I walked by this place and thought it was adorable! I am not a big fan of purple rice so I chose to eat a burger with a side of french fries. The burger tasted good, I just wish it was a bit bigger for $7 without having to choose double meat. The fries were also about $6.. It was a great place to try but I wouldn't recommend to my friends. The gentlemen at the register were very nice though!

P L.

Yelp
I usually don't give 5 stars unless it's exquisite taste. I would give this burger 100 stars if possible. I like hamburgers. I love New York City's delicious homemade hamburgers so much that I've tried them all. I found the best burger of my life at Handsome Rice! Yelp
Nice, simple and tasty Korean food. I came here for lunch based on the other reviews and had the bulgogi. The meat was well seasoned and tender and the daikon side was crisp and tangy. I really liked it. The other side was something of a mashed potato, which I could had gone without, but overall pretty good food.

Meng Z.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while trying to look for a quick grab and go lunch spot on a weekday. I ordered A4 Jeyuk (spicy pork) dish and it came with purple rice and some side salads. Since I wasn't sure how spicy the pork would be, the staff was really nice and had the spicy sauce on the side which I greatly appreciate. Putting the spicy sauce on the side really allowed me to add the right amount of spice to my pork and makes my meal more enjoyable. The pork was excellent however the proportion of rice to pork is a little off. There was way more purple rice than pork. Other than that, everything was delicious and I would definitely come back again to try the other dishes. Even though the space is small, they have a cute little outdoor seating set up in front of their store for customers for the warmer days.

Cyrus A.

Yelp
Delicious Korean food, in large portions, for a good price - check, check, and check! Handsome Rice is a perfect lunchtime option. Their food tastes fantastic, and there's plenty in each entree...so much so that I had to save half for dinner. I'm excited to try other meals, as well as the various bun appetizers on the menu. If you're in the mood for good Korean from an approachable, affordable menu, this is your spot!

Matt T.

Yelp
the food here is amazing. The kimchi Pasta was excellent. I prefer my dumplings pan fried not deep fried but they would stil delicious!!!

Glenn C.

Yelp
This is a nice little Korean lunch spot serving healthier versions of what you find in other Korean places. There's a bit less of a grease/oil flavor though depending on your preference for some of the dishes, this might not be a good thing. They also notably selll omiberry tea, a tea made from Schisandra. The tea has a light fruity flavor similar to osmanthum (I guess a red berry tea if you don't know that one either.) I personally prefer the bulgogi in terms of the dishes here. It's not super sweet and generally tender. I've only gotten the galbi once as there wasn't much for the price though the few pieces were good. The japchae has a good mix of vegetables and it is alright. The side dishes are a hit or miss. I don't generally like the one with the spinach/beet as it lacks flavor. A bit of sesame oil would do wonders. The purple rice is a nice touch and quite flavorful. They used to have this mini bulgogi snack (which I guess it would be tteok-galbi) which was a very good side snack but sadly they don't have it anymore. Their mandoo are fine but I wouldn't go out of my way. The wings are fine also. As per their other dishes, most of their stuff is light. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this place but what it is, the food is good. Though in terms of modern Korean food, I prefer Her Name is Han (though the lines are terrible) and in terms of bulgogi/other dishes there's certain other places that give more bang for your buck. If you want a healthier Korean lunch/dinner to go, this place is good and the staff is nice. 3.5. Rounded up because of the area/nice service/tea.

Heley O.

Yelp
I've picked up the bulgogi lunch from here before and it's tasty, but it is a bit pricey for the portion size. I still loved my meal though and would come back here when I'm craving a healthy lunch that's not too filling in the neighborhood.

Yin H.

Yelp
I think I ordered wrong. Dumplings were good, bibimbap was disappointing. When I got home and opened my lunch, I didn't think it would just be a simple salad ie a few pieces of greens and veggies on top for $14 (no rice, egg or meat!). They have a cute setup with outdoor benches and beer on tap.

Virginie L.

Yelp
I had to pick up some things for someone and found out that Handsome Rice is close by! I actually have bookmarked this place so decided to take the extra 5 minutes out of the way to try it out. I looked at their menu ahead of time and planned to get their chicken avocado. But once I went in, that plan was thrown out the window. I saw that they had unagi (eel) so decided to get that, the kale dumplings (Idk why - just thought I should get something extra), and a cultured pop soda (again...Idk why- the colors drew me in and I, may have panicked?) The person that took my order informed me how long it would take and I just waited. I wasn't able to eat my food right away as I needed to head back home to work (working from home) and that's all the way in Brooklyn. So I was a little scared it might get too cold to eat and it might ruin the taste of the food. BUT! actually, it didn't - the eel was super flavorful and you get very meaty pieces. The sauce really does it and with the purple rice - tastes so good!! The overall dish was not greasy or you'll feel back for eating. Even with the side order of the dumplings. The kale dumpling was really good as well. The crunchy skin/outsides were perfect. I was a little weary of kale dumplings since well...I never heard of it...is that even a thing? Well, handsome rice MADE it a thing. I would def get it again. At first, I thought I paid too much - as I went overboard...why did I do this?? But... ya know - it's worth it. The unagi is about 20 dollars but they usually aren't cheap (so a bit more compared to the other rice dishes) but it is really good - so I can't say it's not worth it. (not saying I'll spend 30 dollars for a one-person lunch cause I usually don't but... there are actually no regrets here) The eel here is actually better than most of the places I have tried. I have not gotten eel in a while due to being disappointed with it. BUT not from Handsome Rice - good job! I will deff come back since I love the Korean but make it a bit healthy kinda concept. LOVE IT! I wanna try their banana pudding too - not the biggest fan of banana pudding but eh what is there to lose? I'll need to bring my boyfriend here as he also wants to eat healthily and I really think Handsome Rice is the way to go.

Hunter C.

Yelp
got the A1 option, food tasted good but pretty disappointed with the portion size for a $20 meal. it was 8% meat & 92% rice. again, the food tasted good but i won't be going back because of the portions.

Wendy Y.

Yelp
This is such a cute shop, but the Korean food served here is subpar at best and does not measure up to what's offered in Ktown. I ordered Jeyuk (spicy pork) plate with purple rice, sweet potato, and a side salad. It came out so quickly, but that's probably because the food has been pre-made. Presentation is great and it's a very balanced meal, but the flavor was lacking throughout the dish. The spicy pork wasn't really spicy and it's supposed to be the star of the dish. I left feeling very full, but a bit cheated out of some good, hearty Korean food.

Tony C.

Yelp
Amazing! Had the Galbi (marinated short ribs) on purple rice, comes with potato salad and veggies and it was delicious!! Food is made to order fresh so about 10-15 minute wait after you place your order. Great place to grab lunch if you work or go to school in the area. Not ideal for dining in as they do not have indoor seating but they do have outdoor seating.

Chris B.

Yelp
Good food. The purple rice had a very unique taste to it and the beef was a nice touch. Wasn't the biggest fan of thr vegetables but that's just my personal preference.

G P.

Yelp
Awesome Korean Fusion restaurant in the heart of Manhattan! Their food is flavorful, tasty and soulful!!! A must place to visit when you are in Manhattan area. I tried their Kalbi. It was just enough with everything. Not too salty, not too sweet, not overcooked nor undercooked. Side dishes were very good, their fried dumpling (especially with Kale) was exceptional. Bibimbop is not the traditional one, but very tasty. I would recommend this place with 10 out of 10!

Kitty K.

Yelp
A cute place and very convenient from where we were staying. Kinda pricey for the portions but they are tasty especially when you are missing Korean food. Got a double burger for my fiancé and he was happy but he felt like that it was a little small. I like their bentos when I'm in the mood for quick korean food.

Ann S.

Yelp
There were many food items to choose from, but I chose the bulgogi & galbi set & the pork mandu. Everything was delicious and very fresh. I also love the sides that came w/ the food. The only thing I thought was alright was the pork mandu. Owner was very nice and friendly. The place is quite small but it has some seating.

Aseah K.

Yelp
I've had to return to work on site recently and Handsome rice is nearby (hooray)! I've been coming here since it opened and was waiting anxiously to return post-quarantine. It definitely did not disappoint. I got the kimchi mac&cheese, which was *chef's kiss* delish. Also the amount you get for the price is worth it. I've also tried the chicken and beef over rice. I usually add kimchi to it but even without, it tastes like it was just made. I'm so happy to see that they are doing well during this time and hope you all will go support them! Also, quick note, remember to order on their website and go to the store to pick up. I think you can also call and ask to deliver.

Ray G.

Yelp
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for all this time. Healthy. Cheap. Balanced. Delicious. Fast. And the exterior is REALLY CUTE!! Makes me feel like I'm in a kdrama
