Pasta samplers, trendy cocktails, rustic-chic lounge

"I learned that after being closed for renovations since last fall, Hank & Mitzi’s Italian Kitchen — named in honor of Jamie Leeds’ parents and formerly Hank’s Pasta Bar — opens for dinner service at 600 Montgomery Street in Alexandria on Thursday, August 13. The casual Italian neighborhood spot will serve individual pizzas (including the Mitzi, topped with mozzarella, provolone, and asiago), pasta dishes such as linguine and clams carried over from Hank’s Pasta Bar, and small plates to share like grilled octopus and fried calamari; Leeds’ family recipes also appear on the menu, from "Hank’s Meatballs" to his mother’s chicken cacciatore. Executive chef Chris Edwards, most recently of Hank’s Oyster Bar on the Wharf and with more than 20 years of experience including the Salamander Resort and Spa and Patowmack Farm, will oversee the kitchen after Will Artley stepped away due to COVID-19 so Leeds could keep senior chefs employed. Wines draw mainly from Italy, cocktails lean toward Italian classics featuring ingredients like Campari, rosé, and San Pellegrino, and the beer list will rotate seasonally with Italian favorites. Hank & Mitzi’s will offer outdoor and indoor dining, takeout, and delivery, with hours Tuesday–Thursday 4–9 p.m., Friday 4–10 p.m., Saturday 12–10 p.m., and Sunday 12–8 p.m." - Adele Chapin

"Hank & Mitzi’s, the pizza- and pasta-driven revamp of Hank’s Pasta Bar from D.C. chef Jamie Leeds, has closed 'for the foreseeable future' in Old Town Alexandria." - Tierney Plumb

"Rebooted from Hank’s Pasta Bar, Hank & Mitzi’s in Old Town Alexandria will honor the owner’s parents with an Italian kitchen focused on pizza, bring on Will Artley as executive chef with experience at Evening Star Café and Pizzeria Orso, and debut an 80-seat rooftop patio when it reopens in May." - Gabe Hiatt

"I noted that Hank’s Pasta Bar’s second life as Hank & Mitzi’s will introduce pizza to the group, is named after the owner’s parents, brings in chef Will Artley from Evening Star Café and Pizzeria Orso, and will debut an 80-seat rooftop patio in the spring." - Gabe Hiatt

"I'm reporting that, expected to reopen by spring 2020 after renovations, this reboot of Hank’s Pasta Bar will relaunch as Hank & Mitzi’s Italian Kitchen at 600 Montgomery Street with Will Artley installed as executive chef to oversee pizza production and shared plates. Artley — an alum of Evening Star Café and Pizzeria Orso who most recently cooked at Scotts in Penn Quarter, has D.C. experience cooking at the White House and Grist Mill Restaurant, and has competed on Chopped — will preview some dishes at Art League’s Art On Tap and could add his famed “BLT” gnocchito to Hank’s rotation. The spot will eventually sport an 80-seat rooftop patio, some hit dishes from Hank’s Pasta Bar will make a comeback, it’s named after Leeds’s parents, and it represents Leeds’s first hire of a chef from outside her group as well as the first location in her group to serve pizza." - Tierney Plumb
