8 Nostalgic Spots Within An Hour's Drive Of NYC

"Need some excitement? Want to spice up your life but not with too much spice? Find a car, drive to Lodi, New Jersey, and eat a 'Hot' Chili Texas Weiner at Hank’s Franks. The hot chili isn’t actually very hot, but it is thick and savory, and will cost you exactly $2.94. The all-blue roadside stand has a handful of picnic tables out front, where regulars eat chili dogs at picnic tables under Sabrett-branded umbrellas. Get a spread so you can also try a hot dog with soft chunks of potato and tangy ‘Hot’ Italian Onions—also fairly mild. If you’re here with a group, order eight dogs. You’ll get a ninth one for free." - bryan kim, molly fitzpatrick, willa moore, will hartman

Hank's Franks Review - Lodi - Lodi - The Infatuation

"Sitting on a tiny triangular sliver of land in Lodi, NJ, Hank’s Franks is a roadside hot dog stand with a handful of picnic tables out front, where regulars eat chili dogs under Sabrett-branded umbrellas. Open since 1959, this all-blue spot has a hot dog menu that taps out at $2.94. Get a spread of at least three, and make sure it includes a 'Hot' Chili Texas Weiner—their quotes, not ours, and it’s not very hot at all, but very thick and savory.  Get another dog with soft chunks of potatoes and a pile of sautéed onions, and one with something simpler, like mustard and relish. Or just order the Family Special: pay for eight hot dogs and you get the ninth one free. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick" - Willa Moore

One of the best hot dog places around. Also one of the last places you can get a dirty water dog. Potato and cheese is my go to, but the house made chili is very good as well. Just went to try the “new fries” today and they were very good as well. Have been going here my whole life and will continue to do so.

Can't go wrong with Hanks Franks. Very inexpensive. Got there chili cheese dogs and were amazing and good quality. Top eats in NJ for sure.

I stopped in today because I was hungry and feeling nostalgic. My family has been coming here since the 80s. We would trek all the way from the Bronx on day trips to the mall and then stop here for a meal. Now, as a NJ resident with my own family, I come in from time to time and I'm pleased to see everything is as I remember from the tasty hotdogs to the RC cola. I love the fact that they're family owned, local business. I'm glad to see that Hank's Franks have stood the test of time and I can bring my family to continue the tradition.

Google
I was visiting the area for a wedding and stopped here for lunch. This is an old-fashioned stand with great food and prompt service. All the seating is outside, but the tables do have umbrellas. I had a chili dog, a sour kraut hot dog, and a Birch Beer fountain drink. Great comfort food at a reasonable price.

Google
The OG of classic hot dog stands. Love this place. Staff is very friendly. They offer RC Cola products and egg creams. Dog toppings including chili and sweet onions are house made. Picnic tables outside.

Google
Hanks Franks rt 46. Lodi Great staff, clean, good prices and food. Loved the Saurkraut and Mustard dog, and to my suprise, krinkle kut fries are deliciously crispy and fluffy. Great potato flavor. Nice spot nestled right up against the highway, a great place to watch traffic racing by. Additional shopping to explore 5 mins right down the road. Def recommended.

Google
Hank's Franks is a North Jersey hot dog icon. It is a tiny stand located on US 46 East in Lodi, just about a mile from Teterboro Airport. It has stood in the same spot with only a few cosmetic changes over the years. While the appearance may have changed a bit, the quality of the menu has remained steady at the top notch throughout the years. To start with, it's the top of the line brand for the franks, and that's Sabrett's. They use toppings that are superlative to say the least. Their chili topping has a nice kick to it and actually tastes like a chili should. They also found two ways to my heart with their menu. #1, for mustard, they use real brown (and not "Yer Yella") mustard. And #2, they have my favorite cola, RC. The people that run this place are some of the most engaging and affable people I've ever met in a business, and their love of their work truly shows. I have only one complaint, and it has nothing to do with anything here, but whoever comes out with these lists of top hot dog places in New Jersey clearly have zero clue as to what a top hot dog place is, when they rate Hank's Franks below Rutt's Hut. Hank's Franks is FAR SUPERIOR.

Yelp
Employee was very helpful and nice Gave good breakdown of each topping and popular combinations, price was also very reasonable Hot dogs were very good, spicy hot onion was my favorite, would eat here again

Yelp
Came here on a Friday afternoon, my friend suggested this spot. I checked out the pics and reviews and was looking forward to lunch. There was a line inside but it went by pretty quick. Ended up getting the chili Texas wiener and plain with sauerkraut and mustard. The hot dogs were boiled so there was no 'snap' but still very solid and for the price, very good value. The chili is not too spicy and has a lot of flavor. If you're around the area and in the mood for some hot dogs, I highly recommend Hank's Franks. * Parking on premise * Outdoor seating - first come first seated * Very Reasonable pricing

Yelp
Delicious franks. The onion sauces are delicious. The potato topping was unusual and I loved it.
google avatar

Valli S.

Yelp
The best hot dogs. They are not greasy. They are succulent and very tasty. They make homemade chili and onion. Totally the best. I'd like to get my hotdog with every day.

Yelp

Yelp
I live in Houston, Texas, but I flew up to see some friends a few weekends ago, and video reels on Facebook were popping up for this place constantly. So we went. Outdoor seating very small area inside to order your food, but very typical of hot dog places in northern New Jersey. The dogs were good. The onion rings were very good. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Simple and tasty. Kind and friendly staff. Lived here 10 yrs but been coming to Lodi all my life, I can't believe I didn't come here sooner. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
I lived on Pine Street for 28 years. Been to Hank's Frank's many times over the years great Hotdogs and now that I live in Arizona we also sell hotdogs at our sub and salad shop a little bit different than Hanks Frank's but Hanks Frank's dogs are amazing Love all the toppings you guys have especially the chili cheese, dog, my fave
google avatar

Jeremy R.

Yelp
Way too much cinnamon in the chili. Slow old guy behind counter that has to converse with everyone, takes too long.

Yelp
Finally tried Hank's Franks after driving past it so many times. We stopped in on a Friday at around noon and there were a few people coming and going. I read that the most popular topping is the potato so we got one of those , one with potatoes and hot Italian onions, and a hot chili Texas wiener. It was interesting. I probably wouldn't order the potato again but I enjoyed the chili one and the hot Italian onions. Next time, I'll need to get the hot chili with the hot Italian onions. It would taste even better and then I can go breathe on my worst enemy. I actually like that there's not too many options on the menu. Helps you decide what you want more quickly. It's like a classic hot dog stand. I also saw after the fact that they have egg creams, so I'll definitely be coming back for one of those. Tip - cash only

Yelp
I'll give a star for the excellent customer service and the place is very clean but that's it ........ all my toppings from the potatoes and cheese, hot onions ,chili had absolutely no seasoning no taste and the hot dogs were tasteless mabey from being submerged in water for too long I don't know about you but I like my hot dogs cooked on the grill and my topping to have flavor !!!!

Yelp
Classic DWDs! Chili and cheese are the way to go. And now they serve fries to complete the experience!

Yelp
My girlfriend loves hot dogs. So she picked a hot dog place on 46 that I had seen but never visited for lunch. It's a small shop, they really only have some picnic tables outside for seating. We ordered at the counter and were quickly given our hotdogs. They only do hotdogs. No fries, no burgers, just hotdogs. The only other things they have are drinks and bags of chips. They are also CASH ONLY. The hotdogs are Sabrett brand and they are "dirty water" dogs. They have a good snap to them even if they are boiled. Toppings are a welcome addition. We got to try the chili, chili cheese, potato/red onion, and sauerkraut hot dogs. Chili cheese was standard, as was the sauerkraut. The standout was the potato and onion dog. It's kinda like a runny mashed potato concoction topped with onions cooked in what seems to be a tomato based sauce. I've been to many of the other hotdog places in northern NJ, but it's the only one that has this topping. Not bad if you're in the mood for a hotdog.

Yelp
Best dogs in town. I get the hot Texas chili, and it all goes well together well. My kiddo always mentions how we should have this every evening for dinner haha. Look, the dogs are probably cooked in the 50 year old water, but it's worth the taste. Folks behind the counter are great, and a lot of outdoor seating, plus parking available. Fyi: cash ONLY.
google avatar

Kelvin D.

Yelp
I been going her since I was kid! When I'm craving a dog, this is where I go! New on the menu, they have onion rings, fries, and mozzarella sticks! Great addition.
google avatar

Adam F.

Yelp
Best value for your weiner dollar! Dirty water dogs at their best, any toppings you want. (I personally recommend the red onions with mustard)
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
Ate here recently and got two hot dogs: Potatoes and cheese Chili and cheese Both hot dogs were great but I did enjoy the chili and cheese dog more. I will be back soon! Staff was friendly and you can see why they have regulars that go there.
google avatar

Cathy F.

Yelp
When my 5 yr old wants hot dogs randomly i thought of hanks franks from passing by so many times. Why not try it? You get a mom and pop feel. We ordered 2 dogs 1 with ketchup and 1 with cheese and cheesy fries. I have a gluten sensitivity so I took a small bite of the dog and it's great even my lil Eva ate all her fries and the rest of the hot dog. I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Will C.

Yelp
This place sucks and I don't get the hype. Unfriendly service and sorry looking basic AF hot dogs with no flavor toppings. Do better.
google avatar

Denise S.

Yelp
Love this place. Have been going there for years. Over 30 years to be exact. Recently I was there and I know that other family members have taken over the store. Which is great! My only concern is why does product have to change? The chili tastes ok but is so watery & loose looking that I even had to look to see if there was any substance under the cheese that was on top! Times have changed and so does everything. Hanks Franks has been there for years and has a tremendous following. You knew what you were getting and quality of product. Please don't change!
google avatar

Jeri C.

Yelp
Best hot dog with potatoes ever Been going there for years Stop there every time I come back to Nj

Edward G.

Yelp
I go to Hank's Franks at least once a week for years. Great service and the food is great.

Yelp
Hands down best hotdogs in the area, everything from the chili to the hot onions to the potatoes are amazing, The service is great Rich is the best, always remembers peoples orders and always great to talk to, very old school type of place on the inside very small but there are tables outside as well as a counter top inside.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing homemade toppings on dirty water Sabrett natural casing dogs. Chili, Onions, Potatoes.....you can't go wrong, it's an institution! It's also a must if you like all the kitschy low brow history of north Jersey Texas Weiners. Do it! Now.
google avatar

Mae R.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST hotdogs in Jersey! There's a reason why the parking lot has both BMW''s and pickup trucks alike, the food is excellent. The staff is friendly and you get a hometown feel when you come into this small but clean store. Note: CASH only (but the prices are just as amazing as the food!)
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Ok I the dogs here are good remind me of Nathan style I got the spicy onions nice kick to it and chili dog. Great customer service, really friendly people I also ordered the birch beer which taste like root beer. Great family spot mostly take out !! Some outside seating areas I ate in my car and enjoyed every bite !! Yummy would definitely come back !!
google avatar

Tony K.

Yelp
Best dirty water dog around HANDS DOWN! It's not the cheapest but it's worth every penny. The owner and the other employees are extremely nice. Wish it wasn't cash only.
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
Hanks franks is one of those northern nj institutions. Was a regular back when I worked in the area in the 80s and although the neighborhood seems busier the place is the same. Counter inside, few tables outside but these are Jersey dirty water dogs. You eat them on the trunk of your car in the sun with a cold can of soda - nothing better. Ok maybe some things are better but it's pretty great after a long snowy, pandemicy winter. Dogs were great, buns and toppings were great and the counter chatter about how great the Mets are going to be this year means spring is upon us. As Arnold said, I'll be back !
google avatar

Dom R.

Yelp
Yes even vegans go back every now and then I couldn't help it we want hotdogs and you know it they're still die for. Let's see if this agrees with us only because were vegan now

Zachary B.

Yelp
This place is CRUCIAL. If you want to understand ethnic New Jerseyan cuisine come here for a piece of history and the mashed potatoes topping
google avatar

Jan R.

Yelp
What a great spot! Grabbed some dogs for lunch. Super nice guys! The place was spotless. All homemade toppings, super fresh dogs and buns. I even got a chocolate egg cream! Got a few different dogs...all were excellent! Can't wait to get back to Hanks.

Joseph S.

Yelp
Tasty, simple, fast, affordable. All qualities of a great old school hot dog stand. I got 3 variety dogs and a birch beer. Delicious. Super friendly service too. I'll be back
google avatar

Yelp
Everything at Hank's is always fresh & delicious! It's been there for many years and hasn't changed a bit, thank God. Stand up counter for indoor eating. Plenty of parking to eat in the car. A handful of picnic tables with Sabrett umbrella for shade to eat outside. My favorites are "The Hot Italian" which consists of chopped Green & Red Hot Peppers and Onions. Just a touch of red sauce, and onions are not overcooked. My other favorite is Hank's Hot Texas Weiner, raw onions, mustard and their delicious chili. All buns are steamed, fresh and soft. The hot dogs are boiled Sabrett brand. Other toppings are melted hot cheese, steamed potatoes, and sweeter red onions. Which all can be mixed and matched as you please. Very clean, very friendly and extremely delicious hot dogs and homemade toppings.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
The hot dog toppings make this place different from most hot dog stands. Upon entry I was greeted by the counter person, who offered to show me each individual topping. Most of the toppings here are homemade. The counter person also offered some suggestions on what goes well together. I followed his advice and I ordered a chili cheesedog, a hot dog with red onions, and a hot dog with potato and hot onions. They use Sabrett hot dogs here, so I was familiar with the taste. The suggested toppings did indeed go well together and I had three tasty hot dogs. Only knock on this place, really is the price and maybe the hours. For 3 hot dogs with toppings and a drink, the total cost was $9.50. A bit pricey. Also they seem to close at 5pm on weekdays. Seems a bit early, so it may be hard to get here all that often.

Ramon B.

Yelp
Hot dogs are great with red onions and chili. Service is fast. great place. Every time I come here I eat 3 dogs there and get a pint of red onions, chili, 12 franks and rolls. I'm happy it's in walking distance!!
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Clean, quality hotdog with great toppings. The potato sauce is different and worth stopping here just for that, if you're looking for anything besides a hotdog or a soda or potato chips, this isn't the spot for you. They keep it simple here but please update your soda fountain- rc cola? Yuck.
google avatar

Marta N.

Yelp
Boiled hot dogs.. my husband loves this place. He'll scarf down 4 with cheese, chili, onions & mustard like nothing. It's a tiny little place on the side of rt. 46. Looks pretty clean& the guys behind the counter are friendly. No seating but there's a little counter you can stand at to grab a quick bite& if it's nice out they have some picnic tables outside. Make sure to bring cash!
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
This place is very, very good. I live near and frequent The Hot Dog House in Carlstadt and Hank's is every bit as good.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Best boiled dogs in Jersey! Been going here for over 20 years! They've got the best Sauerkraut and their Red Onions are awesome. I go here at least once a week.

Steve L.

Yelp
Visiting from KC, read the reviews and had to stop. The reviews are right on! BEST hotdog joint I've ever visited!! A must stop if you live here or just visiting. I ate two dogs (chili/cheese) and probably could have ate two more. DELICIOUS!!
google avatar

Christian S.

Yelp
After sampling the dogs at the previous location I personally was ready to pack it in, and call it a day. I felt we were moving down the scale at this point but Hank's Franks was on the itinerary so off we went to our last stop. If I thought hotdog fatigue was settling in, my taste buds were awakened at Hank's Franks. My wife's Uncle suggested the potato topping but it look more like a stew and wasn't appealing enough for me to soggy up my hotdog. I kept it simple and went with the mustard, kraut, and red onions. With my first bite, I could immediately taste the simplicity, yet scrumptious elements that made this hotdog stand out from the rest. The dog was good, mustard with a little bite, fresh kraut, and red onions are all basic elements of a quality dirty water dog. My Hank's experience was only enhanced once I saw Orangeade on the menu. There is nothing like the lingering taste of red onions, mustard, and a sugary orange drink. #1 Ranked Spot of the North Jersey Hot Dog Tour

Erdem Y.

Yelp
Great hot dogs with tasty toppings. If you buy 8 hot dogs, you will recieve 1 free. My friend & I did that. Grapade was the only thing that I didn't like.

Mj B.

Yelp
One of the top three hotdog places in NJ. Everything is fresh the people are nice I was very happy with their establishment it was worth the drive.

Yelp
Sabrett Hot Dogs Are Excellent A Roadside Stand Adds A Touch Of Nostalgia However I can just boil them up myself. If you want a quick bite and its a good dog your craving, why not? Fair prices on quality tube steaks.
