This stylish restaurant and bar in a retro department store serves up American classics, vibrant cocktails, and a lively atmosphere with a quirky basement twist.
"Hanny’s has witnessed all the iterations of downtown Phoenix over the past two decades and continues to navigate the area’s transformations with unwavering expertise. Set within a refurbished mid-20th-century department store, Hanny’s offers a stylish and softly lit ambiance, making it an ideal destination for corporate dinners all the way to a swift pre-concert drink. The establishment boasts an impressive array of wine, beer, and spirits, including standout options like the formidable espresso martini and an extensive Scotch selection." - Mcconnell Quinn, Nikki Buchanan
"Housed in a former department store by the same name, Hanny’s is a chic downtown Phoenix staple. The building was built in 1947 and opened its doors as a restaurant in 2005. The kitchen is open until 12:30 a.m. every night of the week and features dishes like chicken milanese, hot honey pizza, a to-die-for brown butter cake, and an impressive cocktail menu. Don’t miss a photo opportunity in the establishment’s iconic bathrooms, or the secret art installation in the basement." - Mcconnell Quinn
"Located in a 1940s department store, Hanny’s looks pretty average on the surface. But grab a $7 martini and take the glass-bottomed elevator downstairs where you’ll find old porcelain dolls sitting in a row behind a chain-link fence, and old dressing rooms repurposed into some very neon bathrooms. You may have come here for drinks and some hot honey pepperoni pizza, but you’ll stay to see if the rumor about the dolls inexplicably disappearing and reappearing is true. It’s as much a bar as it is an experience - just check your bag before you leave to make sure one of these creepy dolls hasn’t hitched a ride home." - Joanna Boyle
"In a restaurant with a name like “Hanny’s”, one would usually expect Hanny to be the owner, or perhaps the chef. But that’s not the case here—the restaurant draws its name from Vic Hanny, a department store proprietor who built the store decades ago. Looking closely, you’ll see the walls of the restaurant are covered in original Hanny’s logos and advertisements for menswear. The building was constructed in 1947 by architects Royal Lescher and Leslie Mahoney, as a late example of the “International Style” of architecture. Upon its completion, the Arizona Times praised it for bringing a “new look” to the city as a modern department store. After its closing in 1986, Hanny’s was purchased by the city of Phoenix and used to train firefighters. The old Hanny’s building was purchased by Karl Kopp in 2005. Kopp understood the appeal in giving his restaurants an unconventional style. So, instead of concealing its past as a department store, he kept much of the original, fading decor, as well as an original elevator shaft with a glass bottom. Kopp also added some new features: weird bathrooms, and an unnamed horned mannequin covered in a mosaic of colorful objects. If you’re looking for something unsettling, head on down to the basement, with its collection of creepy dolls. Legend says that these dolls move from time to time—whether this is simply a trick of artistry or actual paranormal activity is up for debate. Know Before You Go The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday through Monday." - d dkat, LilyLillyLillie, dkat, l latinagypsy2000, itsnogame1984, kaitlyn3889, mikewalker, ascoldashoth, L LilyLillyLillie, ccesare, A Anonymous22, latinagypsy2000
