Boston-Area Restaurant Openings, Updated Weekly (Winter 2020) | Eater Boston

"A Cajun-style seafood concept centered on boil bags where diners choose seafood, sauce/spice level, and starch sides (noodles, potatoes), supplemented by appetizers like crab cakes and po’ boys and tropical cocktails—designed for hands-on, shareable seafood dining." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I want to hear using a Groupon. There was not much of a choice on the Groupon menu. In those choices you had there was extra expenses just to be able to get something worthwhile eating. The shrimp was excellent yes, but to have anything else you had to add 10 or $15 to be able to have a meal.

Google
Everything is so fresh!! Snow crab had lots of meat. Great service. They even give free food sometimes. Make sure to check out the owner's daughter's paintings--she's an amazing artist. Would definitely come again!

Google
I had a very unpleasant and concerning experience at Happy Crab. The food clearly did not taste fresh. The shrimp, corn, and potatoes all had a strange and abnormal smell and flavor, which did not seem like a seasoning issue but rather spoiled ingredients. I only ate food from this restaurant and nothing else. Within one hour, I vomited three times, which strongly suggests a food safety problem. This is no longer about personal taste — it is a serious hygiene and food safety issue.

Google
My family and I came to Happy Crab craving a seafood boil bags… this restaurant did not disappoint whatsoever. Family owned and operated, delicious and quick service. We made our own seafood boil bags and had three sauces to choose from: I picked the Cajun spicy, but my daughter and husband choose garlic butter and each was delicious. The menu offered a wide variety and is outlined in a way that is easy to read and understand. Not to mention the flavored lemonades are delicious. I got the passion fruit one and my daughter the pineapple. We will most definitely be back soon! Thank you Happy Crab!

Google
My favorite Cajun seafood spot of all time. They have consistently produced good, delicious food and customer service. I decided to be spontaneous and tried fried ice cream. They didn’t disappoint. 10/10 Thanks guys keep up the great service!

Google
This place is horrible for a seafood boil. They charge for 1/2 shrimp, received only 6 shrimp, not even 1/4 pound. The same with the crab legs, gave me 1 small cluster. The corn was 1/2 cob, 1 potato cut into 4 and they skimped on the sauce, then charged $5 for extra sauce. Now I know why they were empty

Google
We had such fun! The seafood was delicious, as were the drinks and fried ice cream. The owner, Vicky, was a phenomenal host. Her warmth and humor added to the meal. My husband had Cajun clams and scallops, and I had catfish and steamed gyoza. This was out first visit and we will definitely be back!

Google
it was the worst experience on my anniversary day Today, I dined at happy crab and had an unfortunately disappointing experience with their seafood offerings. The calamari I ordered as an appetizer was overcooked and rubbery, making it nearly impossible to chew. It lacked the tender texture that good calamari should have, and the accompanying dipping sauce did little to salvage the dish. The boil bag didn’t have much sea fruit few of mussels and very tiny crab legs with their crab legs were practically empty, with hardly any meat inside.. To make matters worse, the staff ( lady with short hair)kept pushing me to add more items to my order to charged an additional $15. I was shocked to find extra charges on my bill. Despite only ordering two drinks, I was charged an additional $22, meanwhile the cost of the drink is $5.95 for a Mr. Ginger soft drink. I paid cash and regret not to debate her and asked why! It was waste of money and time "Why do I need to pay more tax if I bought the meal on Groupon and have already paid the tax? And can you explain how two drinks that cost $5.95 each end up being charged $22? Is the tax $10on $12? That's ridiculous. You are trying to steal from me and still acting like the victim." Why when I paid you cash, didn’t give me my receipt???????

Yelp
Quite an impressive place to get boiled seafood, po' boys, and a slew of other nice eats. Started with the appetizer, a fried calamari on a bed of mixed greens. The calamari decent, mostly tender, and the crispy breading had integrity and held onto the calamari quite well. The accompanying spicy sauce was a bit sweet, and might have preferred some other accompaniment. The boiled crawfish and green mussels were excellently rendered. The crawfish were decent, perhaps not as spongy as one might be used to in Louisiana; the mussels were all of high quality, fairly large pieces, and flavorful. The accompanying corn and potatoes absorbed the Cajun spicy flavor quite well (though with the potatoes it took more dipping of the spicy flavor to really get the flavor). The okra was also really nicely mixed into the boil bag as well. The soft shell crab po' boy was freshly made, with some nice vegetables (lettuce, tomato) balancing out the fried seafood. I wish the crab had something of a nicer flavor, but the textural balance throughout the sandwich was excellent. All in all, a really cool place, and rather unique for the neighborhood.

Yelp
The shrimp, spring rolls, clam chowder, & fried fish were all amazing!! Everything was fresh & well made. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
I ordered through ubereats since this place is hard for me to get to. The food came early and it was fresh and tasty. I ordered 2 bags of "Happy Family C", which comes with 1lb of snow crab legs, Shrimp with shell (but no head), corn and potatoes. You get the choice of sauce and spicy level. I got garlic butter medium, and Cajun spicy hot. The latter was better, IMHO. The crab was legs were fresh enough for you to just snap them in half to get large chunks of meat out to enjoy. The Shrimp had the shell on, but they were super easy to peel. The shrimp were slit down the back. The corn could've been cooked a little longer for my tastes, but it was still ok. The potatoes were good. All of the food comes in thick plastic bags, so no worries about a puncture. The order even came with 2 pairs of gloves and I have to say, they held up well during the long meal! I don't think traditional latex gloves would do as they would be too thin. It does take some time to eat this meal so I'm glad I got delivery. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a quick seafood boil meal.

Yelp
Happy crab was a good night out with my friends without breaking the bank. Great budget option. Clean restaurant attentive staff. I used a Groupon that I bought online and had printed out in advance and got a great value. I highly recommend getting the shrimp, the hot spicy Cajun sauce, and edamame and calamari. I found that the snow crab was a bit salty - not worth the hype, and there was a slight fake butter flavor to the bags as well. The shrimps with the head on were really good and sweet. I also really enjoyed the mussles. It's good for what it is and I would come back
google avatar

Z M.

Yelp
Delightful fresh well packaged and yummy ! The mussles are my favorite. The Cajun sauce is perfectly tasty and garlicky without you having to worry about smelling like garlic later. I got takeout but the service here is also very nice.

Yelp
I ordered last night for delivery. Extremely disappointed. Paid $23 (+$5.95 uber eats menu fee +taxes+service fees+tip) for a lobster roll that was so tiny and had barely any lobster meat. Owner claims the rolls have 4oz and I wish I had measured it because that was definitely less, but I have no proof, other than the picture attached that speaks by itself. Two bites it took to eat it. I've never felt so scammed from a delivery in my life. Don't fall for it, avoid this place.

Yelp
Fresh seafood served piping hot by a friendly and efficient staff. I've never had a crab boil served as it was but I am a fan! The crab legs were delicious and they were complemented by the corn and potatoes. My husband had scallops served the same way. We both chose the butter garlic option. I chose a medium level of spice, and it wasn't too hot at all. I would go back if we are ever in the area again. Money, saving hint - the couple next to us told us that they tried Happy Crab because they found a Groupon. Good luck!
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Small, family-run restaurant with excellent service. They provide a fair amount of seafood per order and the seasoning is adequate. The lobster roll comes topped with spicy mayonnaise and tobiko, which is different, but not a huge fan of.

Dina Z.

Yelp
Dont buy a Groupon to this place. Before we told them we had a Groupon, they gave us a regular menu. After informing them of our Groupon, the server took our regular menu and handed us a "Groupon" menu. You are limited to a fixed menu where you pay extra for sides. The dessert is fried ice cream, no substitutes, so if you're lactose intolerant, you're crap outta luck. The servers were nice, the mojitos were delicious and the food was edible. If you are in the area, patronize this place, but don't buy the Groupon and go out of your way to come here. There isn't anything special about this place.

Yelp
My first impression was what I am getting my self into because of what NOT to expect or to expect. To my pleasure the food and service and ambience was quiet pleasing. I WILL DEFINITELY MAKE A RETURN TRIP! The seafood boil was very fulfilling and spicey...just the way I liked it. The environment in the restaurant was very different...a lot of flowers and plants of good nature. It gives a serene atmosphere of enjoying what you came to indulge. The employees were nice and respectful and honest about questions when asked. Not a bad spot to get into for a bite or two. Oh by the way, it has a very good bar with specialty drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little spot. Average boil nothing special. The staff was great the lady I am almost certain she is the owner was very hospitable, welcoming and attentive.

Suzi Y.

Yelp
Great food and service! Small spot, some window seating at tables. Be prepared for messy! Fun informal date spot.

Danilsh M.

Yelp
the food here is absolutely disgusting . they portions here are very small even if you get the most expensive boil . extremely salty, they don't even give you a full peice of potatoes or corn. i literally got 1/2 of a potato ! like where the other half?? our server was very nice but i will not be coming back here again.
google avatar

Jenna P.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite local spots to go. I always feel satisfied and they always have some sort of deal whether you go at happy hour or whatnot. Check it out!
google avatar

Rosa P.

Yelp
Happy Crab did not make me happy. I wish I never ate here. The food was mediocre. I had better seafood at other places. I wanted to give this place a chance but I'm very disappointed. I'm now sick in bed because of this. Do not go here unless you want bubble guts. Also they lie about the portion of food. Do not recommend!
google avatar

Andrei B.

Yelp
The worst lobster roll I've ever had. Not only are they very cheap and hardly include any lobster, not only do they make the smallest lobster roll I've even seen, they put on a terrible sauce that no one else puts on lobster. It completely hides the taste. You might as well be eating the blandest chicken or cardboard in the world. I have no idea if this is to hide bad quality product or mask an inability to cook, but it was expensive tasteless mush. The only positive of the lobster is that it was so bad, the rest of the terrible experience sort of faded into the background. Like the mussles that were so disgustingly salty. I gagged. They care as much about their food as they care about their presentation. Just dump things in a plastic bag and ship it.

Keiddy C.

Yelp
what a nice local spot! the service was wonderful as the staff was so kind. the restaurant itself was clean and beautifully decorated with a big crab lamp on the wall! as for the food, the spice was perfect and the french fries were even better dipped in the boil sauce. it was a very good amount of food for the price. i would go again!
google avatar

Malaysha H.

Yelp
The service was friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately, the food was very subpar. The ingredients weren't fresh and the food lacked flavor. Would not recommend.
google avatar

MJ H.

Yelp
OK, MY DUDES. If any of you even like seafood just a TAD, then this is the place that will blow your wig off. The seafood in a bag with other treats, then shaken to be covered in a yummy sauce of your choosing, plus a big ol' bib and gloves to dig in... experience of a lifetime. I'm not from the south (and have barely spent much time there), so this experience was special for me. I also just loved the food. The po' boy (first one I've ever had), the clams, the corn on the cob, the potatoes... all were so amazing I can't wait to eat it all again. Don't hesitate - get your butt over to Happy Crab.

L L.

Yelp
We had such fun! The seafood was delicious, as were the drinks and fried ice cream. The owner, Vicky, was a phenomenal host. Her warmth and humor added to the meal. My husband had Cajun clams and scallops, and I had catfish and steamed gyoza. This was our first visit, and we will definitely be back! I dropped it to 4 stars because most of the seafood isn't fresh. It's cozy inside and pretty quiet.

Yelp
This is our first time at the Happy Crab. A very lovely restaurant and we had a very good time. Drinks, apps and entrees were very good. Get dressed up, put on a bib and gloves, eat until you can't. There's veryou'll have a great time eating. There's very strong house sake watch yourself. Well we'll eat there again. Crab cakes Shrimp and mussels made to your spice level. Very good food!

Steph Y.

Yelp
Great poboys! I'm from Louisiana and this is a taste of home. I don't recommend shrimp stir spaghetti, though. Will definitely be back here!
google avatar

Tonya T.

Yelp
Absolutely love seafood! This place has some fresh seafood. My fiancé and I have been here twice now. Both of us got a seafood boil with the garlic noodles that soaks up all the lovely juices in the bag. So yummy! Highly recommend!

Lou A.

Yelp
First time here and we were pleasantly surprised. We had the spicy Cajun seafood for two. Food was extremely tasty.... Yum! The place is clean and the staff and owner are friendly. We highly recommend it to seafood lovers!

Yelp
Oh my GOODNESS is this place AMAZING. Service: A+. Drinks A+. Food A++. A hidden gem in Teele Square, Happy crab is a smaller restaurant serving up tasty Cajun food bag and bib style. They give you gloves, wet naps and a small dish to pull all of your delicious seafood into. We got the snow crab and mussels and the lobster tail and easy peel shrimp. The flavors were on point and the juices were flowing. We also chose to add potatoes and corn to our bags as well as white rice and noodles. We will 100% be coming back and telling all of our friends to go as well. Our full order: Lychee martinis Cajun edamame Mussels and snow crab with potatoes corn and noodles Lobster tail and easy peel shrimp with potatoes corn and white rice Fried ice cream Scorpion bowl
google avatar

Nikky L.

Yelp
This is surely a hidden gem. Came here using a Groupon and was very happy at the service and food. The bags were very flavorful and fresh and the serving plates are really cute. The fried Chicken which was well fried and great to share with two was in a small shopping cart. Will definitely be back the prices and service are very reasonable and great.
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
I ordered this on a whim because I missed New Orleans and the grubhub reviews were excellent. Less than ten minutes after ordering a Happy Family I got a text saying my food was on the way. It arrived piping hot and well wrapped - no spills. I simply poured it into a bowl and enjoyed it. Everything was flavorful and delicious, and I was genuinely sad when it was all gone. I will absolutely order again. Probably soon.
google avatar

Barry L.

Yelp
Clams were small, not separated from their shells, dry, overcooked. Oysters were incredibly small but good. Corn on cob was old, tough, overcooked. Soft shell crab had too much old breading on it. Crab was extremely dry, overcooked.
google avatar

Rajiv R.

Yelp
So yummy! The ultimate comfort food. Just the right amount of spice (I like things spicy). I will be returning!
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
This place opened right before the new year, and we're so happy to have them in our hood. It stands out, in both its quality and uniqueness. It's obvious how much ownership cares. During their brief closing last month, they saved my number and texted when they were going to re-open. I was so glad when I got the text saying that they would be open for COVID-safe pick-up. I wish you guys at the Happy Crab the best, we will continue to support you by eating your AWESOME seafood meals. We always mix it up, but the cajun sauce is our favorite. And usually I don't love potatoes, but in the Happy Crab sauces, they become one of my favorite foods, ha!

Michelle R.

Yelp
I was visiting Salem for Halloween and was looking forward to some great East Coast seafood. Unfortunately, i did NOT find it here.
google avatar

India W.

Yelp
Happy Crab is a glorious addition to Teele Square! The food is top notch. I moved to the Boston area from the south where Cajun food is king and I cannot wait to share it with my mother when she visits. The atmosphere is charming, the wait staff is delightful, and the food and drinks cannot be beat! We stumbled in on Christmas out of curiosity and returned 3 days later simply because we loved it. So far we've tried the shrimp & mussels, shrimp po' boy, Cajun fries, fried chocolate ice cream, sangria and Long Island ice teas and each was simply wonderful. Zero complaints. Don't sleep on this lovely new restaurant!

Robert J.

Yelp
Very nice place to order seafood. Not many comments regarding quality of service other than a rating of 4.8 but the restaurant looked very clean. There were an older couple dining at the table closest to us and they had a much better food selection, don't be afraid to order what someone else had, you might like it.

Qinyi M.

Yelp
Delicious seafood - ordered the shrimp and crawfish "catch your own seafood" option and it did not disappoint. Mainly, though, the crawfish was quite small, which was understandable since it's not in season. I don't recommend the crawfish. The shrimp are very large and tender. A little taken aback by the expensive prices. We ordered $60 worth of stuff but didn't feel super satisfied and full after the meal.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
This place was great! It just opened up in the neighborhood and we are so excited they're here! There is no other restaurant like it close by, so it is a refreshing addition. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and came out quickly. We ordered the chicken wings, which were perfectly fried, and the king crab and shrimp. Both were well seasoned and cooked well. We are definitely looking forward to going back!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
We visited this place tonight and I was pretty bummed on the portion size . It gets two stars because the sauce was delicious. Problem was the portion was lied about. I ordered 1lb of king crab at $54 dollars . It was one leg. 1. The leg wasn't a pound because i used the iPhone app to weigh it. It was .45 of a Lb . I don't like people who do business like this . I should give it one star for lying about the portions. I wouldn't recommend going here if your wanting the actual lb you requested. That will ruin a business

Jim A.

Yelp
Great food. Very friendly staff. I had the crab cake and fried scallops. The crab cake was great. Almost like a katsu style breading. Really good.

Sophine C.

Yelp
I'm so sad the boil came out salty. :( The garlic noodles looked like spaghetti :/ But the scallops were bomb.

Nicole F.

Yelp
Food was HORRIBLE instantly threw up from the squid and Shrimp. I called the restaurant for a refund of my 60$ and offered to take the food back to them, gentleman told me pretty much it was my issue to figure it out but they weren't going to issue a refund. DO NOT GO HERE Edit; not only was the taste bad the seafood was old and fishy which is what caused me to get sick!
google avatar

Sydney a.

Yelp
Ordered the lobster roll. Contained 3 small pieces of lobster and soggy lettuce drenched in spicy Mayo.... Major rip off. Gave 2 stars because the fries were okay.
google avatar

Juliette L.

Yelp
This place is perfect !! Our waitress was so nice and the food was oh so good !! It was just the right amount of food so that you could finish your whole meal but still leave stuffed. The drinks were tasty and the Cajun sauce in the shrimp bag was perfectly seasoned. I can't wait to go back !

Kerry M.

Yelp
Our first time was awesome - kind staff, quick service, delicious food and strong, cheap drinks. We split some very hot calamari which wasn't greasy at all, tried some of the delicious $7.95 drinks and each got shrimp with different spices and heat levels. The only thing we wished we had was bread to dip all the amazing sauce in - going to get the noodles next time to soak up more of the flavor.Gloves and bibs made eating clean and effective! A man with a beautiful giant dog stopped out front - the owner said the dog stops every day at the same time to look in and the staff waves from the window. Great addition to the neighborhood!

Amy O.

Yelp
We got the seafood boil with 1 lbs crawfish and 1lbs shrimps, medium Cajun spicy with sausage and the total came out to be $42, which is a bit more pricey than Capt Loui in Stoneham. The food came out in less than 10 mins which was surprising but after I tasted it, I realized they didn't let the seafood boiled in the sauce. The seafood was boiled separately so the sauce didn't soaked into the seafood. You have to dip the seafood into the sauce. The waitress was super nice though, so A + for that. If you want a really good seafood boil, I would recommend going to Capt Loui instead since you can get a free side with pick 2 and the food is much better.
google avatar

Tobias G.

Yelp
We have been here 4 times now, and it is consistently good. The food is very tasty and always comes out just right. The fries are good too and lay a good foundation. It's fun to gear up and dig in. The staff is friendly and always willing to listen to feedback and get things right. Thumbs up!

Tina S.

Yelp
Loved it! Went with our small group last night, fabulous service, fresh ingredients, delicious. If I had to give a critique, I would suggest breadsticks to sop up that amazing sauce. Loved it!
google avatar

Satuy J.

Yelp
Our first time here at Happy Crab. Food: Price was reasonable and the cajun spicy sauce we ordered for the shrimps and butter garlic for the clams was amazing. 4 stars Service: The waitress was very nice and friendly even explored the menu with us. 4 stars Ambiance: Place is small and I think they need to add more decor. Street meter parking. 3.5 stars All-in-all, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and would visit again!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I want to like this place. Teele Square is a tough location for a new dinner spot. With Shaking Crab nearby, they have a slim margin for error. I had the shrimp with head on and was let down by the quality. It is the same price, but not even close to the quality of the shrimp at Shaking Crab. Also, the hot cajun sauce is not spicy. The service was good and the lychee martini was great and even had a tasty lychee at the bottom I am regularly in the neighborhood and will try them one more time. I will amend this review if warranted.
google avatar

Yaya W.

Yelp
bargain. Place for Seafood Boil. Prices are decent. Atmosphere is great. Nice customer service

Yelp
Great experience, even during the pandemic! We ate outside at the sidewalk seating and enjoyed lobster tail clams fried shrimp. Only complaint would be the calamari - kind of rubbery/overcooked. Sea Pearl Sauvignon Blanc was great and paired well with the flavorful lobster tail and clams! Service also superb.
