Best Dishes the Eater Portland Team Ate This Week - Eater Portland

"My family gathered at a familiar spot, Happy Dragon Chinese Seafood Restaurant, where a parade of dishes followed: steamed oysters in their shell with black bean sauce (an off-menu item, you have to know to ask), fish with tofu served in a sizzling clay pot, deep-fried salt-and-pepper pork chops. But consistently my favorite thing here is what the menu calls “Japanese tofu.” I assume it’s the kind made with egg and dashi: This tofu is wonderfully custardy in the center but its toothsome exterior somehow holds firm when lightly stir-fried in sauce. It’s perfect, and whether with a seafood medley or (even better, if it’s available) with mushrooms, I insist on ordering it every single time." - Eater Staff

Google
Food is great, but they don't tell you that there is shrimp in the egg rolls! I've never heard of an egg roll having shrimp in it. That would be a shrimp roll. That's why they are two different things because of how common these allergies are. Great food but almost killed my girlfriend. 3 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐❌❌

Google
Im sad I used to love this place since childhood but the last order the white rice had no lie a bluish mold and I already ate a lot of it before seeing needless to say i have to part ways with my once fav restaurant

Google
i was craving chinese. so i ordered chicken chow mein. with fried rice and a vegetable egg roll. One they gave me the smallest portion I've ever seen two it cost $18.03 the rice was so mushy and brown. It was definitely disgusting. The vegetable egg roll was mushy and they should tell you that they put a little baby shrimp in there just in case you're allergic to shellfish. they don't even give you dry noodles, they give you a little cup of sides they don't give you packets and they charge you extra...the chicken was hard .and they took forever . So I'm just trying to be honest and I usually don't write reviews but it sucked. Don't go there.

Not as pricey as most Asian fast food around here AND they deliver!!!

Google
I ordered boneless spare ribs and the pork fried rice and was extremely disappointed. The ribs were extremely salty and the pork fried rice was weirdly dark and mushy. Not to mention the food in total was $35. It is not worth the price and definitely do not recommend for newcomers…

Google
This used to be very good. Idk what happened but the last 2 orders made me sick. Unfortunately, if new owners took over, it's bad!

Google
Over priced for take out. Smallest portions ever! I got a large egg foo young and could not even share it with my friend. I opened up the three large cakes. They looked wonderful then I opened up a pint of rice, which was not even filled to capacity and then they gave me a small spot of gravy.

Yelp
First impression: smelled wonderful from the street; secondly- spotlessly clean with an intimate dining area. We listened to classical music in the background while our food was being prepared. This is literally a Mom and Pop place. The food was seasoned so well, not overly salty. Hot and Sour Soup was just right, the broth was rich and flavorful with an amazing assortment of Asian vegetables. Everything that was fried tasted great and nothing was greasy, they obviously change the oil on a regular basis because the spring rolls were delicate in flavor without any off tastes. Vegetable LoMein; shrimp with Asparagus and vegetable egg foo young were all delicious and there will be plenty of leftovers for the rest of the week!

Yelp
Picked up food for takeout this week. Everything tasted good but I suspected that perhaps the ownership or cooks had changed from when I last ate from here. Just subtle differences such as whole shrimp in the egg roll, darker pork fried rice, and "gooey" looking chicken chow mein. No real complaints as I always liked Happy Dragon's food; but small differences seemed to have occurred.

Yelp
Found this little critter (a bug egg of some sort) in my food here. The staff were very unwilling to give my money back after showing them the egg, saying that it was "minced garlic". The food used to be quite good a couple of months ago, but they started making it differently and now it tastes mediocre, with a side of parasites!!!

Yelp
Unfortunately Falling Under The Same Circumstances as All Business Of Increasing Prices & Overlooking Quality. At This Point Happy Dragon Is A Sad One That Will Not Be Getting No More Business From This Foodie. Don't Do It Or You'll Be Disappointed Too.

Yelp
Usually pretty good. Ordered the other day. Ribs were burnt and no flavor at all. Then the pork friend rice was was the same. Pork burnt and pretty dried out. Last two times haven't been that great. Also pretty expensive. A combo platter, spare ribs(6) burnt, 2 pints of pork fried rice. $48.00 for delivery. And with tip in over $50+. Just not worth the quantity and quality for what I paid to be honest.

Yelp
During 'pandemic 2020' where most of the Chinese places are closed! There were like only 2 places open within delivery distance, this was one. Luckily it was in the area of most of the places we usually order from,I don't know how we missed it before. I guess since there were so many to choose from, and we had our regular go to places. Anyway delivery time was ok and food was good enough and well presented.

Yelp
When I first ordered their food here, I loved the Szechuan Shrimp and Peppered Steak! Their homemade duck sauce are the bomb; unlike your typical Chinese restaurants. Quick service and fast delivery (over grubhub and other mobile eatery). You spend more with grubhub AND they take 30% from the smaller business, but why not SAVE and have them deliver it to you directly? #supportsmallbusiness

Yelp
I use to love the food from this place but the last few months the food has been terrible, idk if they are under new management or what but the food is disgusting anymore.

Yelp
I wish my experience with Happy Dragon's food the other night had been in some way impressive or remarkable - aside from Bing Bing on Passyunk, I really haven't found any Chinese restaurants in South Philly that satisfy me - but the order left me totally flat. I ordered 3 things - a shrimp egg roll, an order of "dumpling soup", and an order of kung pao chicken. The shrimp roll was totally fine - it tasted like a generic shrimp spring roll and that's all I was expecting from it. Nothing made it stand out relative to other shrimp egg rolls I've had over the years, but it tasted fine and had enough shrimp. I guess I feel pretty positive-neutral about it. The best thing from my order was the dumpling soup. I ordered it not really knowing what to expect since the menu also has wonton soup listed, a dish which could reasonably also be called a "dumpling soup". I was kind of hoping the dumpling soup would be the kind of tiny, delicate wontons/dumplings that you can get at places like Shaxian Delicacies and some other more authentic places. I didn't get that - quite the opposite, actually. This dish came with I think 3 (maybe 4?) large, thick pork dumplings in a broth with sliced carrots and mushrooms. Thankfully, they still tasted pretty good - the broth and the pork inside of the dumplings were both more flavorful than anything else I received, and while it was a small order, the dumplings were reasonably filling. And that brings us to the worst part of the meal, which was unfortunately my entre. I sometimes order kung pao when I eat at Americanized Chinese restaurants because it's a dish that very much does exist in China, and can often be massively flavorful and satisfying. But the thing is, more often than not I wind up getting disappointed because Americanized kung pao never contains a fraction of the flavor of its Chinese counterpart and often because way too much vegetable filler finds its way into the dish (I swear one place in Fishtown gave me a platter than was half celery, a vegetable that as far as I'm concerned doesn't belong in kung pao chicken at all). As far as vegetable content, this one definitely had way more types of vegetables in mix than I would expect, but I was actually excited to see that if they were veggie-loading it, they had at least included water chestnuts, which are at least a filler veggie that I always enjoy and rarely get to eat. But the flavor...well, there wasn't any flavor. Like, at all. It just tasted like plain chicken and vegetables in a viscous but completely unseasoned sauce. I, in a bit of a rush, threw garlic powder, chili flakes, cumin, and white pepper on the leftovers the next day and it JUST got to a point where it started to see like it had flavor. So this overall wasn't for me, and the blandness of the kung pao took me a bit aback (it even had a pepper next to it on the menu denoting spice!). But the dumpling soup wasn't bad at all and the egg roll was thoroughly passable, and I know I can be a bit hard on Americanized Chinese food sometimes. Depending on your own preferences re:Chinese food, don't necessarily pass on Happy Dragon just because I was unimpressed - just go in with tempered expectations.

Yelp
Possibly the worst Chinese food out there. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. If it was possible to give some place zero stars, I would. Maybe the only thing worthy of a single star was their wonton soup which was basically the only edible thing there. The wontons are thick, and not filled with much, but I'm a sucker for asian soups.

Yelp
Everything is always fresh and delicious and hot! Very generous portions. Best chinese food in the City of Brotherly Love. Extremely nice customer service! Thank you!

Yelp
Place was completely empty on a Friday night. My first instinct was to turn back around and head to Chinatown but I said no, give it a chance. I'm glad I did. Upon walking in, the host instructed us to seat ourselves wherever we wanted so we grabbed 2 menus and sat at a cute little table in the back corner. Dinner consisted of beef and broccoli which comes with your choice of egg drop or wonton soup, pork fried rice, and an egg roll. Also got a nice pot of hot tea. My dish was downright delicious, my favorite part being the gravy they put on the beef and broccoli, but the broccoli itself could've been a tad more cooked as the stalks were somewhat still hard. The fried rice and egg roll were just okay. Service was very attentive since no one else was in there nevertheless their take out line was quite busy. Glad to know this place is a nearby spot to get affordable, solid Chinese food.

Yelp
Solid Chinese food. They do it all, dine in, take out, and delivery. Dining room is in need of some updating, but they still go old school with the fried wontons, hot mustard, and sweet & sour sauce for the table. And the wontons are thick and fried long, you can probably squeeze some oil it if you tried. The hot tea is complimentary for the table. And the menu is pretty standard fare. No jelly fish or congee here. Nothing but American classics like Kung Pao and Moo Shu. But they do it well so you're not going to go wrong here. Service is quick and courteous but not overly friendly. They give you your space and subtly let you when it's time to go. It's old school baby...

Yelp
I got home late from work and later decided I was too tired to cook. My son asked for Chinese food. I've passed this restaurant and read many good reviews. I can't begin to tell you how horrible and unedible the food was. My son enjoyed his Wonton soup, but the hot and sour was a gelatinous mess. I picked out the tofu and vegetables with a fork. We ordered the barbecue spare ribs and General Tso's chicken. Neither had any flavor, and the chicken was gristly and impossible to chew. The quality of the ribs was equally horrible. I was hoping to have leftovers for lunch, but since our trash day was the next day, I threw it out. I spoke to the male manager/ owner the next afternoon and calmly told him about our food. Instead if apologizing or asking how he could remedy the situation, he bragged that " everybody loves our food. Nobody ever complains." I repeated that the quality and taste of the food was unacceptable. I told him I would have brought it back, but I wanted it taken away in the trash. I asked for a partial refund. He refused because we ate it. I reminded him that it was so horrible we couldn't eat it. I told him I always call the restaurant to see if they will make a concession before I write a scathing review. He hung up on me. I don't know how they have stayed in business for 41 years.

Yelp
Not good at all. How do you ruin fried rice?! Sauces are low-flavored. Not again!
google avatar

Laurie D.

Yelp
I ordered szechuan vegetable which is a spicy sauce. When I saw the sauce was orange I was wondering what is this sweet and sour? I dislike that sauce. I tasted the sauce and sure enough sweet and sour not spicy szechuan. I called and the man who answered said yes he used sweet and sour and added ketchup. Ketchup? I told him it was inedible and he just said that's how he makes it and hung up. I have ordered from them many times and he could care less. Oh well. Ketchup?

Yelp
I ordered from Happy Dragon tonight for the first time. I find it hard to find Chinese restaurants that I like and this was great! I ordered take out and when I picked it up was impressed by the nice and clean dining room. I ordered lo mein, scallion pancakes and spring rolls- all good! I would definitely order from here again. This is a good place!

Yelp
The best inexpensive Chinese food I've had in Philly so far. I've ordered delivery and have ate in as well, and every experience has been wonderful. The staff are incredibly nice and courteous, and the food tastes fresh and flavorful. Delivery is always on time, if not early.
google avatar

Yelp
I like these guys. Everyone who works there is super nice, polite, and efficient. I usually order to pick up since it's just a couple of blocks from me, but I've had it delivered as well. Possibly the best lo-mein in the city. Beef is tender, very flavorful. I also recommend the General Tso. I like mostly all of their food so far. My only negative is that the wonton soup although good has some very doughy wonton, but it's good and has lots of scallions etc in it so I'm not going to stop eating it- it's good! Also I've noticed that two of these negative reviews appear to be from people who live nowhere near here, so I'm wondering if they might have picked the wrong restaurant on yelp when they signed in to pen a review. It's not like it's an original name for a chinese restaurant and being that I lived in Hatboro and have parents who still live there, there is one with that name there. There are like three in the area out there and personally I think they all fall far short. South Philly Happy Dragon, I recommend. For the area it's very good, and the selection is ok, the place is super clean, people very nice. Almost makes me glad that Number 1 China made me sick 3 times.

Yelp
Our rather sizable order took about 45 minutes to arrive (3 soups, 2 entrées, fried rice and an appetizer) (for reference, I live about a mile away and delivery came by car). All dishes were steaming hot. Though the scallion pancake (2.95) was perhaps a little thick, the dipping sauce was pleasantly unique, not your basic soy with a splash of ginger. The hot and sour soup (4.10) was judged to be "pretty good; not the best I've had but far from the worst. I'd put it in the top half of Chinese soups I've had" My wonton soup (3.50) was laden with doughy wontons. The broth was clear (not fatty), but far from flavorless. I would order again, but tell them to go light on the wontons. Pork Fried Rice (6.50) was surprisingly good. General Tso Tofu (7.50) was quite good. Nice thick chunks properly sauteed and a hot but sweet sauce. Hunan Pork (listed on Web site, not on menu) - was really more like a curried pork but nonetheless quite tasty. My order was placed based on reviews here, and though I only had this menu to go by (http://happydragon.us/Menu.html) the folks there were courteous and helpful in helping me to navigate the menu blind. When I got their menu, I noted a lunch special (11am-3pm for 5.75) that offered several entrées with soup, pork fried rice and egg roll. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
I really like Happy Dragon! I've used them for take out and for dining in and both experiences have been positive. Dining in here is a so nice! The inside is pretty small but very welcoming. They are never too busy in the dining area so you get a lot of attention. You get the usual with your meal- tea, noodles and wonton soup. All the food portions are pretty big and reasonably priced. Service has always been top notch. No complaints at all from me. My experiences with take out have also been very good. Food is also prepared quickly and ready by the time I am there. Quality is just as good as eating in. Usually with take out Chinese they just include a fortune cookie but at Happy Dragon they include oolong tea as well. I thought that was pretty cool. Overall my favorite Chinese place in the area.

Yelp
Best Chinese Delivery in South Philly... and I've tried quite a few. Steamed Dumplings are amazeballs, with nice thin wrapper. I've only eaten there once, and frankly it was a bit disappointing... and delivery can be as fast as 15 minutes or as slow as an hour - but definitely worth giving them a shot. One hint, if you're ordering for delivery be patient, the guy is a slow talker, right out of a Seinfeld episode, and will repeat every thing you say - and DON'T give him your credit card info or he will repeat it loudly so anyone within ear shot can hear it!
google avatar

Andrea V.

Yelp
I will admit to being picky about Chinese food. However, most mediocre Chinese food is at least pretty edible. This was honestly the worst I've had, ever. Maybe because it was a Sunday night or not their usual chef...I don't know. This was a Yelp fail. I ordered wonton soup and chicken with broccoli. Fairly simple, straightforward dishes that any Chinese restaurant should be able to make well. Both were bland and tasteless, and the sauce for the chicken with broccoli was thick, slimy, and unnatural. I took a few bites and threw it away. I almost never do that because I hate wasting money. I just couldn't stomach it. Also, I didn't have a paper menu when I ordered, which the girl on the phone knew. Rather than ask me what size items I wanted, she chose the large sizes, thus me being set back $18 for food that ended up in the trash. I probably should have thought to ask so that's mostly on me, but that just added to the overall frustration. There is much, much better Chinese food in the world. Just goes to show, if you want the real deal you have to go to the source. I'll be hoofing it to Chinatown from now on.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
I don't understand these bad reviews! Happy Dragon is the best! I went to college in center city. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food in Philly and outside of Chinatown, most of it is pretty bad. When I started hanging around South Philly my friend took me to Happy Dragon and I was so pleasantly surprised by the quality. The General Tsos Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice are both very good, highly recommend. Even the egg rolls are better than most. If you go visit the restaurant, the dining room is very clean and pleasant to sit in. The staff is also incredibly nice.
google avatar

YelpHatesMe Y.

Yelp
Not the best, but not the worst. Had the general Tso's chicken. While its MUCH better than Number 1 China, it still lacks what I consider to be good general Tso's. We had it delivered. Only took 30 minutes. Had the shrimp roll also. Not the best and their duck sauce was horrible. Think I'll be trying a new place next time. It would still work in a pinch though.
google avatar

Mehul S.

Yelp
Really good service but the food was below average. I order general tsos chicken and it wasnt nearly as good as other places in the area.
google avatar

Dominick S.

Yelp
Tonight, I'm very disappointed. If you're not going to be open on Easter and you have a recording, update the recording to reflect that instead of saying " we will be open normal hours and someone will get back to you ". Not a good way to operate a normally successful business
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
For American style restaurant this is a decent one. Really good portion food-I am not kidding, it's really a ton of food from the combo platters we ordered. Friendly staff and very fast and accommodating
google avatar

Carol R.

Yelp
Came with a party of 7 people and left full and happy. The ladies here were so friendly and cheerful. We ordered dumplings, 2 meat dishes, jang jjangjjang, and jjangpong, all of which were better than expected. Also, I think they realized the number of dumplings would be really odd for our party of 7, so they made sure to give us 7 pieces so everyone could have a try of their crispy item. Very thoughtful for a place like this.
google avatar

Leah F.

Yelp
Decided to dine in for once at Happy dragon. As a follow up to my last review...yep, still amazing!

Nick L.

Yelp
If I could give happy dragon a thousand stars I would. Every time I order from them I have nothing but good experiences the delivery driver is the nicest man I've ever met. There food is delicious and always comes quick. I will never order from another Chinese restaurant for as long as happy dragon is around.

Yelp
Delivery was fast.... 30 mins But the shrimp egg roll had no shrimp in it!! And was burned. The chicken wings and veg fried rice was okay...... Rice tasted weird and burnt. I will not order here again
google avatar

Yelp
We are visiting Philadelphia, and just wanted Chinese food for dinner. Looking at yelp, we picked the place closest to where we are staying and ended up at Happy Dragon. The restaurant was clean. The staff was friendly, and ultimately the food was enjoyed by all! We ordered for three vegans and two meat eaters. There was plenty of food. I would definitely go here again- and recommend it to others.

Laura K.

Yelp
Our go to for Chinese takeout in South Philly. We usually get the vegetable lo mein, the General Tso's chicken, Pork Egg Roll. Even the fortune cookies and oolong tea are tasty. Good prices, friendly service, tasty food.

Yelp
Wanted to give it negative stars but one was the lowest yelp allows. Ordered dinner, took over an hour to arrive, food was cold upon arrival (I live 1/4 mile away for reference). Ordered Noodles with Vegetables and Vegetable Spring Rolls (I am a vegetarian / allergic to shellfish). Asked the gentleman on the phone to confirm that the two items were in fact vegetarian and contained no meat, was assured that they were "definitely vegetarian". When the food arrived the noodles had chicken and shrimp in them and the vegetable spring rolls contained shrimp. Thank goodness I checked the spring rolls before biting into them because, as I mentioned, I am allergic to shellfish. Called back to let them know there must have been a mix up. Person on the phone seemed uninterested but agreed to have the driver come back with the correct order "within 45 minutes". Another 40 minutes pass and the driver shows up with the correct order, I thank him, he then asks me if he can have the incorrect order back?? I of course agree because I can't eat it but what are they going to do with it? Confirm that it contained chicken and shrimp? Serve it to another vegetarian? Just seemed strange. Once I started eating my correct order I found it to be sub par. The Noodles with Vegetables were dry and void of flavor and the "Vegetable Spring Rolls" once again contained shrimp so I am unable to comment on them. After such a poor experience with this restaurant I definitely won't be ordering from them ever again.

Yelp
Go here every now and then and eat in. Great food and service. Everyone that works there is polite and always make sure that you have everything you need.
google avatar

Cait D.

Yelp
I really love this place. The man who answers the phone has been the same guy for years (likely the owner) and is soooo nice. The food is always ready on time. The meats never have fillers. I have gone to other places where the chicken pieces that are breaded were stuffed with bread! Nothing like that here. Just all white meat pieces. The prices are super cheap too. 1 point down bc the egg roll is underwhelming but I can't seem to bring myself to just skip it. I have never eaten a chinese meal without an egg roll!
google avatar

Jessie C.

Yelp
Nothing really positive I could find to say about this place. The food doesn't have much flavor. Don't bother trying to even find vegetarian options. There are maybe 2 in the menu. By far the worst Chinese I have ever eaten in my life. I hate giving bad reviews, but I'm sorry to say that this is definitely a place I would never go again.
google avatar

Alana L.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. Best lo mein I've had in Philly. All food was very good, but we got full very quickly and didn't eat much. Service was very nice, but somewhat strange. We declined extra empty plates multiple times, but then they brought them and left them on our table anyway. Water refills very quickly, but that filled us up really fast. Also eerily quiet. Overall a good experience. Likely to be back.

Anna B.

Yelp
Solid American Chinese food. Everything comes out hot and tasting great, and the service (I think the owners?) is so friendly and nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, nice clean & homey environment. Love their lemon chicken!
google avatar

Bill D.

Yelp
Ordered delivery at 6:16 got my food at 7:48. That's 1 hour and 32 minutes. I was told I would have my food in 40 minutes. I called ten minutes before the food arrived and they had nothing to offer but an apology. To retain my business, the food should have been free. There food was decent albiet cold and soggy. Next time, I'll take my business elsewhere

Linda R.

Yelp
Absolutely excellent! Everything we ate was flavorful! The wonton had pork and scallions, the egg roll was hot, fresh hot sauce and duck sauce, the noodles were fresh. I ordered the moo goo gai pan it was the best ive had in years. My husband ordered the general chicken it was tasty and the rice was good too!!!the service was superb! I wish I lived closer!

Yelp
Haven't been here since they were on Oregon, but, I do remember it always being an enjoyable experience from tea time to fortune cookies. Great food. I always thought the zodiac placemats were kind of neat as well.

Jamie S.

Yelp
I usually love Happy Dragon! I have been ordering for years. The soup is delicious, and the delivery is usually there within a half hour. However, I ordered last week and it was not a good experience. The woman who took my order rushed me off the phone. After waiting an hour, I called to see the status of the order. A man very rudely said they were busy and it should be there any minute. Another half hour went by, so I called again. I was told that my food hadn't left yet and that they were waiting for their driver to come back. They said it should be another 15-20 minutes, they couldn't get in touch with the driver, and they didn't know what I wanted them to do. They were basically unapologetic and didn't care that we had waited close to two hours. The food eventually came, and was missing the spring roll I ordered. Not to mention, everything tasted kind of bland. Not sure if new people are working there? Very disappointing, and not sure I will ever order again.
google avatar

Raymond H.

Yelp
To begin, the staff is EXTREMELY friendly and they have good food. You can place your dinner order at noon for a pick up time later in the day without any hassles. I've never sat inside to dine, mainly because I live right around the corner, so I can not rate the dining experience; my review is based off take-out.
google avatar

Manuel B.

Yelp
LOTS of GREAT food CHEAP. Large portions, delicious food, great price. Blah blah blah blah blah apparently your review has to be somewhat long but I've already said everything I have to so blah blah blah blah blah....

Yelp
Excellent for take-out Chinese. The person manning the phone was pleasant and intelligible. We made a small order of hot and sour soup, Kung Pao chicken and Kung Pao shrimp. They were nice enough to make a batch of the soup without pork for my girlfriend. (Or at least they said they did!) We live a little over a mile away and the order took around 45 minutes or so to arrive. I was a bit surprised at the expense as we didn't have a menu prior to ordering. The total was $25 for these three items and many of the platters are upwards of $8-$9. However, they give you a LOT of food for your money. Unlike some "combination platters" at other Chinese places which combine food and rice, they fill the (thankfully reusable or recyclable) plastic containers entirely with food and then give you the rice on the side. So each platter is easily two meals. The soup was very good and the food was tasty. I enjoyed the wide variety of veggies they put in the Kung Pao as well; zucchini, for example. I'd order from here again.

jennifer v.

Yelp
I've had takeout from here 3 times in the past few months and each time, the food has been consistent and really good. I think you can definitely tell the difference between here and other local Chinese restaurants/takeout. The ingredients are fresher and higher quality and the dishes aren't full of excess sodium. The owner is very clear and nice on the phone and makes sure he gets your order right. I haven't eaten in the restaurant yet but when I went in to pick up, it was clean and inviting in there. I really recommend this place if you are looking for better Chinese.
