Tucked away on a small side street just off Oxford Road, Happy Sky Bakery is a tiny Japanese bakery with no seating at all. As soon as you step inside, you’ll find the display of baked goods on the right, a small coffee station on the left, and the actual bakery visible at the back. The space is so compact that only about two people can comfortably queue inside at once. Despite its size, the window display is beautifully inviting and hard to resist.
I tried their teriyaki chicken pan, which was decent but served cold. It’s definitely best enjoyed warm, so I’d recommend heating it up if you take it home — it makes a noticeable difference in flavour and texture.
The matcha mochi sticky rice custard cream was an interesting dessert. It had a chewy rice layer with a slightly jelly-like texture, a matcha-flavoured filling, and a bit of crumble in the middle. Unique and fun to try, though not particularly outstanding in taste.
Their signature item, the Honey Toast, is made from their Tokyo milk loaf, which they ferment slowly at low temperature for 72 hours. The result is a soft, rich brioche with a crispy sugar-and-honey crust — easily their highlight and worth coming back for.
Overall, Happy Sky Bakery offers some creative and distinctive Japanese-inspired pastries and desserts. However, the lack of seating and the fact that savoury items are served cold may not appeal to everyone. It’s best suited for takeaway or a quick stop to pick up something sweet.
