The London Honey Toast Power Rankings - London - The Infatuation

"For anyone who, like us, cares about the specific kind of caramelisation around a piece of honey toast, the one from Happy Sky Bakery is chewy and sticky, rather than crisp and crunchy. The soft bread at this Fitzrovia spot is less soaked, which works well with such a decadent, sweet outer layer and means that the shokupan stays fluffy inside. It’s science. Tasty, carb-dense science." - sinead cranna

The 7 Best Japanese Bakeries In London - London - The Infatuation

"You might develop a strategy while you wait in line at Happy Sky Bakery. “Just one chicken katsu curry pan” you’ll tell yourself. But then it’s your turn to order at this glorified hatch off Oxford Street and a glistening lemon cinnamon croissant tower catches your eye. Fortunately pretty much everything here is good, especially a not-too-sweet Matcha Mochi Ribbon (a ribbon-shapped matcha pastry filled with mochi). On a warm day, we recommend nearby Soho Square Gardens for a beige picnic spread." - sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

Happy Sky Japanese Bakery Hanway Street Fitzrovia - Review - Fitzrovia - London - The Infatuation

"You might have a strategy while you wait in line at Happy Sky Bakery—a glorified hatch just off Oxford Street. “Just one piece of Tokyo honey toast” you’ll tell yourself. But then it’s your turn to push apart the blue curtains and step inside the cupboard-sized space. Suddenly a glistening lemon cinnamon croissant tower catches your eye… where else are you going to try that? And once you go down that road, you may as well get the Yuzu Kiss you saw on TikTok too. Over-ordering is inevitable when you’re surrounded by this many tempting bakes, and most of this Japanese bakery’s creations are great. Our pick of the lot is the Matcha Mochi Ribbon, and on a warm day your best bet is to take your haul to nearby Soho Square Gardens. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Tokyo Honey Toast For anyone who, like us, cares about the specific kind of caramelisation around a piece of honey toast, this one is chewy and sticky rather than crisp and crunchy. The soft bread is less soaked, which works well with such a decadent, sweet outer layer. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Matcha Pistachio Almond Croissant This feels like it’s fallen into the ‘Made For Socials’ category of foods. It looks impressive—a thick, emerald green crust of matcha and pistachio on top of a puffed-up almond croissant. But it’s almost impossible to eat (excessive crumble action) and tastes just OK. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Matcha Mochi Ribbon One of our favourite things to order here. The mochi is pleasingly chewy and soft against the intense crispiness and flakiness of the pastry. The whole thing isn’t too sweet, either. Just note that the hojicha version is pictured here. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Chicken Katsu Sando Skip the sando—the bread has been dry when we’ve had it and there hasn’t been enough mayo or tonkatsu sauce. Lemon Cinnamon Croissant Tower Croissant towers are the kind of thing that anger purists. We get it, this is over the top, but it’s still tasty. It’s covered in sticky, citrussy icing, and the whole thing gets a much-needed lift from the tangy candied lemon on top. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"Tokyo milk bread and a matcha cinnamon roll are maybe the only things that could get us to take on Oxford Street right now. Happy Sky Bakery already has a spot in Shepherd’s Bush, and this grab-and-go bakery marks their second. This Japanese bakery is drawing big queues, so go early to get your chicken katsu sando fix." - team infatuation

Tucked away on a small side street just off Oxford Road, Happy Sky Bakery is a tiny Japanese bakery with no seating at all. As soon as you step inside, you’ll find the display of baked goods on the right, a small coffee station on the left, and the actual bakery visible at the back. The space is so compact that only about two people can comfortably queue inside at once. Despite its size, the window display is beautifully inviting and hard to resist. I tried their teriyaki chicken pan, which was decent but served cold. It’s definitely best enjoyed warm, so I’d recommend heating it up if you take it home — it makes a noticeable difference in flavour and texture. The matcha mochi sticky rice custard cream was an interesting dessert. It had a chewy rice layer with a slightly jelly-like texture, a matcha-flavoured filling, and a bit of crumble in the middle. Unique and fun to try, though not particularly outstanding in taste. Their signature item, the Honey Toast, is made from their Tokyo milk loaf, which they ferment slowly at low temperature for 72 hours. The result is a soft, rich brioche with a crispy sugar-and-honey crust — easily their highlight and worth coming back for. Overall, Happy Sky Bakery offers some creative and distinctive Japanese-inspired pastries and desserts. However, the lack of seating and the fact that savoury items are served cold may not appeal to everyone. It’s best suited for takeaway or a quick stop to pick up something sweet.

Finally made it to 📍Happy Sky Bakery, Tottenham Court Road to try the Japanese bakes. Mochi bun was soooo good… soft chewy mochi and a generous matcha filling in a soft bun. The honey butter toast was lovely, crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I’m told the sweetcorn bun was really good but the brownie croissant was a fail for me… tough and chewy outside, dense and dry in the middle with a couple of hard brownie pieces on top. Looking forward to going back to try their other items! #japanesebakery #london #bakery #foodlover

Incredible, tasty and beautiful bakes. Cant wait to go back! I had matcha donut, salted caramel mochi custard cream bun and my favourite matcha croissant cube

Happy Sky Bakery is such a lovely little gem! Probably the best honey butter toast in London – crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, and absolutely delicious. We also tried the pain au chocolat, which was perfectly crispy with a rich chocolate filling. The chicken teriyaki bread was okay, but the rest more than made up for it. Can’t wait to go back for more honey butter toast!

Ordered matcha donut, karage sandwich and honey toast. Friendly service. Didn't need to wait long. Very expensive but unique delicacies. Worth a try.

I’m sorry to give only two stars. The service was warm and friendly, but when it comes to the food... The honey toast is really not recommended and quite overpriced. It basically feels like an entire thick cut toast soaked in honey or sugar for too long — heavy, greasy, and overwhelming. I even tried microwaving it a bit, but the sugary coating on the outside just stuck to my teeth. (There’s actually a much better honey toast place near Covent Garden.) The milk toast was also terrible — extremely dry and completely different from the texture I was expecting. And if I remember correctly, it was over £6 for just a few pieces. Honestly, even Tesco’s version tastes better! The only thing I somewhat enjoyed was the vanilla custard bread, which reminded me of the custard buns I used to have back in Taiwan.

Katsu sando was okay, but the meat felt processed, and filling was rather small. The strawberry cheesecake croissant cake pastry was better, but felt dense and not much of a cheesecake. It’s a cute bakery, with decent pastry and bread.

The phenomenal Japanese bakery never ceases to progress. Their new item, Matcha crepe was out of the world. It was undoubtedly one of the best crepes that I have ever had. The authentic matcha powder is skillfully incorporated into the perfectly cooked batter with exquisite technique, complemented by the beautiful balance of rich yet refreshing matcha custard cream and mascarpone whipped cream, whilst the tartness of the strawberries creates a blissful marriage of flavours in your mouth! By the way, their MATCHA LATTE is absolutely brilliant too!!
