"Chinese takeout with the best beef and green beans over chow mein the world has seen. Call 916-231-9651, or order delivery through DoorDash." - Illyanna Maisonet

"Diana Dich runs her parents’ South Sacramento Chinese takeout spot called Happy Takeout, known for its Chinese-American classics like honey walnut shrimp and special beef and green beans over chow mein. Dich says she feels “scared and worried” about the coronavirus pandemic — but also lucky that the restaurant was already set up for takeout and delivery before this all happened. “In the beginning of March, we were extremely slow. I thought I’d have to cut the employees’ hours,” Dich says, noting that a few customers even asked if any of her employees had been to China recently. “None of us even have relatives in China,” she says. But in recent weeks, business has picked up again, perhaps thanks to Instagram influencers and their #sacrestaurantchallenge, or maybe just because people got tired of cooking for themselves. In fact, Dich says she’s so busy now — in part because she’s covering shifts for a few employees who have decided to self-isolate — that she’s having a difficult time keeping up with demand." - Illyanna Maisonet

Google
Since I moved to Sac I have been on the search for the holy triangle of Chinese food. Not too far away, not too salty, and absolutely loaded with flavor! They do it right at Happy Takeout. Quick service and you can tell they love food and their customers a TON

Google
Best wonton soup ever (they use napa cabbage!!). Best cheese wontons. I’m lactose intolerant but I can never leave without adding some to my order. Get one or the other (or both) and even your worst day will become happier.

Google
The BEST Chinese food spot I’ve tried in Sacramento County. Food is made when ordered, the flavors are a clear indication of that. The chow mein, fried rice, egg roll, walnut shrimp - everything was PERFECTION! Needless to say, I am Happy with Happy Takeout. Do yourself a favor and stop by if you’re in the area. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Google
This place is officially my #1 spot for Chinese food! Wow everything was so yummy! I got the dinner plate with orange chicken and normally I’m able to finish a plate but they serve you a GREAT amount of food so I got full! The prices are perfect and just everything is perfect! It’s more a takeout place than dine in (it’s a small building) but I didn’t mind that at all since I ordered for pick up. Would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!

Google
I want to love this place, I really do. I keep coming back as it’s my local Chinese food spot, but the only thing it’s been consistently good at is being consistently bad. Food is over fried, somehow dry and super oily at the same time, flavorless, just tastes OLD. It can’t even be doctored up at home because it’s so dried out. Writing this review because I keep giving it a shot and needing the reminder to not come back. Adding a star because they give you good portions, unfortunately those portions are mostly inedible. I also didn’t get the egg roll and wonton in my dinner combo which was disappointing but I imagine those are fairly inedible as well.

Google
I received chicken fried rice and the rice was dry! I also received egg rolls and the vegetables were soggy and the rap was over cooked! This isn’t for everyone, I don’t believe that I’ll visit them ever again! I went on the strength of a food review on instagram, I won’t do that again! The people are nice, but the food, not so much, save your money! Go elsewhere!

Jess Moua

Google
The portions are huge. To be honest I was not expecting how much I got, so it's worth the price. The flavor is good and enjoyable. I wish there was some more meet with my brocoli beef but that's okay. I loved the stickers and signs on the wall.

Heyward Kimberly

Google
Don’t use menu they charge more than what’s on the menu. Menu says 11.75 for walnut chicken entree. They tried to charge me 14.95 +tax for the same entree should her what it said online but they didn’t honor the price that is currently on the menu.

Yelp
A great takeout place to get the most bang for your buck! You can easily get two meals out of a combo here. I got the dinner combo which includes an entree, fried rice, chow mein, egg roll and a cream cheese wonton. I got the classic orange chicken. I called it in and they said it would take 10-15 minutes to be ready. It takes me that amount of time to get there and as soon as I got there it was ready. If it's busy parking can be challenging, it's on a busy street in Oak Park. This place is a true take out place, there are no places to sit and eat. They're pretty explicit about it, seeing as it's in the name and all. I thought the food was good for the price, the portions are huge. You know this isn't a gourmet place, if you go in knowing that you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Worst food I have eaten. I am surprised the restaurant even passes health inspections. It looks so dirty. I ordered black pepper chicken, chicken fried rice. Hot garlic fish, chicken chow mein. The meat had a weird after taste. Tastes like low quality meat and oils. I took 2 bites of everything to try and threw it ALL away. $50 down the drain. Never again.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Like the name suggests, Happy Takeout is a great place to get takeout for a meal. The portions are pretty generous for the price so it can be split in multiple meals. Items ordered: - Salt n pepper fish: Not too greasy and flavor was good. Nice crisp for each piece! - Vegetable and chicken: I liked the amount of vegetables that came with the dish, decent amount of meat too. Flavor was pretty good.

Samantha L.

Yelp
Talk about bang for your buck!! This one meal can last 4 meals. The staff is really kind too! Dish: dinner combo w/orange chicken, plain fried rice, and veggie chow mein for $14. Logistics: -takeout only -no bathroom -plenty parking -accepts cc

Yelp
Happy takeout makes some of the best Chinese takeout in the midtown/oak park area! I love how much you can taste the characteristic smoky flavor of a wok fired stir fry in the food here. Everything is good to perfection and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the food comes out hot and fast ! Shout out Diana !

Rich L.

Yelp
Fast, lots of food, and economical... what else could you ask for? Personality, yes they are fun bunch! With many times a cartoon drawn on your takeout boxes, sometimes of you. Just right up the road from my office, this place has not let us down. We almost always get their chicken chow mein along with a few more dishes. The portions are large enough to feed a few people. and always tasty. So convenient for us as our order is usually ready in a few minutes. One night I was at a futbol match up the street and was freezing, called here for wonton soup and that hit the spot. With a few parking spaces behind the building, this is tops for Chinese grab and go food.

Tom M.

Yelp
I've been going to this place for years. It's got great food, nice staff and very quick service and a price that is feels like pre pandemic. The only problem that I've had isn't even their fault, but every now and then you'll see a fellow customer acting like a total fool for no good reason.

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Best Chinese takeout in Sac!!! The portions are ginormous, and the food is tasty! Chow mein was on point. Noods perfectly chewy and not overcooked. Fried rice def got that wok hay flavor. I got the general chicken, and my friend got the salt n pepper tofu. Both were yums and not too salty. Dinner combo also came with egg rolls and crab cheese fried wonton - what's not to love? Read the signs. They crack me up. No fuss service. Very straightforward. Food comes out quickly. Just order (calling to preorder is a good idea), grab your food, and go home. EZPZ Happy takeout indeed.

Yelp
Door Dash Experience, so this review is solely on quality of food. I have heard from co-workers that Happy Takeout is theeee place for Chinese food. I would have to disagree. While the Salt n Pep Chicken had a good crunch and we're seasoned well with chunks of sautéed jalapeños and onions. The walnut shrimp was bland, which was disappointing because this is one of favorite dishes. I have had much more tastier Chinese food elsewhere, so for me this will be the one and only time ordering from Happy Takeout. *Open to any recommendations of future spots for me to try ;) please send them my way. Thanks for reading.

Keri C.

Yelp
I appreciate the extra gesture for the wait . I was a little nervous since I had to wait but everything was hot . It was a Friday night and they were busy . But they worked hard to ensure orders were out & food was hot . Thank you

Timothy H.

Yelp
Adding more to my previous review. What is great about this place is their diversity of staff. Locals work here along with the Chinese food cooking staff. This place is bustling with lots of take out, door dash, and walk in. One our favorite spots where we return often Overall, still a 3.5 - 4 star

Philip E.

Yelp
One of my fav spots this spot hits forsure chow mein one of the best the fried rice smackin

Stefanie Q.

Yelp
Happy Takeout is pretty solid. While it's not the best Chinese takeout I've ever had, it's definitely up there in terms of getting bang for your buck and convenience. Recently I ordered DoorDash for 2 people: 5 Egg Rolls, 6 Potstickers, 1 order of House Fried Rice, 1 order Teriyaki Chicken, and 1 order Walnut Shrimp. All the food we received was more than enough to feed both of us for at least 2 meals each. I will definitely order from them again; so far they haven't disappointed me! Make sure you check it out next time you're in East Sac, or looking for quick takeout/delivery.

Nancy C.

Yelp
Always happy!! Great food, great people. Always worth the drive. I recommend everything! Lol. From the chicken wings, to the noodles and fried rice, the soups, appetizers(have tried all) to the walnut shrimp and the Mongolian beef. Definitely a great spot.

Phillip K.

Yelp
I have not had Chinese takeout this good since moving to Sacramento. I only wish I could have found it sooner.

Nico I.

Yelp
Thank you Happy Take out! We love this place. Very affordable and you get a hefty amount of food. The staff is always friendly and on task.

Jay S.

Yelp
I ordered some Happy Takeout for lunch today and it was great. I've always wanted to try this spot for YEARS since I grew up around the area (Oak Park). I had it last week but I wanted to taste it again to see if I really liked it. I'm usually slightly picky when it comes to certain aspects of Chinese takeout. I usually look for color, the type of noodles used in the chow mein (exactly how I preferred, not the skinny things you see in panda's chow mein), the fried rice (you can't mess it up), flavor, and lastly, portion size. Everything was on par with what I was looking for. The chow mein and fried rice has that darker tint that I look for, not light-colored like panda's. The orange chicken and sweet and sour pork were on point. Lastly, the portion size was perfect. In the photos, it doesn't look like much because their takeout box is larger than normal but man, when I picked it up, it was pretty hefty and that made me very satisfied with my decision in having Happy Takeout for lunch. Thank you!

Wayne B.

Yelp
I freakin LOVE this place. Fast, inexpensive, convenient, the staff are kind. God I love this spot! $15 bucks for a giant box of delicious food? Fuggedhaboutit. I order from here like once a week or so. Y'all are killing it! Thank you Happy Takeout! Great oak park addition.

Pritesh P.

Yelp
They have a decent serve and it's definitely worth your money. The staff was so mindful of my order. Though parking could be a hassle but I made order online which saved me from the issue.

Sandra M.

Yelp
We ordered from here due to the ratings and online recommendations. Is there another Happy Takeout that we missed because I have no idea what everyone is talking about when they say this food is good - either the cook was out for the day and we got a bad batch or y'all love sub par food. We love, love Chinese food but this isn't it. We had the famous orange chicken, chicken lo mein, wontons, and potstickers. It was all terrible, which I guess is a feat in itself. Orange chicken - spongy breading, chicken was dried out (tasted old and stale). No real flavor. Chicken lo mein- tasteless (how is that possible). I had to put an insane amount of soy sauce so it could be edible, and I gave up after a few bites because the noodles were dry and sticky. The noodles were hot when they arrived, but it tasted like they had reheated day old food. Potstickers- same spongy breading. I peeled off the breading and ate the meat. These were more like empanadas. Wontons - super thick, tasteless, flat, not much inside. For over $60, this meal was terrible. We were so excited to eat here and are disappointed to have wasted our time and money. After a few unsuccessful bites, we ended up throwing it all out. Luckily, we had leftovers from lunch that tided us over. I don't trust anyone who recommends eating here - they are lying or have terrible taste in food.

Rob R.

Yelp
Definitely a ton of food for the money. Everything seemed so oily (especially the chow mein), but we really weren't impressed overall. The egg drop soup was definitely spot on.

Star H.

Yelp
Their food was so good and Marcus he was amazing, he was so accommodating and helpful ! He made sure I had everything I needed to enjoy my meal ! Thank you so much !

Mai L.

Yelp
For a hole in the wall Chinese take out place, this location is great. The staff is quick to help and the food is cooked right when you order. Portions are great, taste is fine (I prefer less seasoning that I can add to than over seasoned food that you have to put up with.

Sam B.

Yelp
Consistent Chinese food - so reliable that you know what you're going to get every time! And it's always a fast delivery in my experience. I ordered my food through doordash, since this restaurant is pretty far my house. Every time I've ordered from this restaurant from doordash, my order has been done quick and delivered right away! This time I ordered the shrimp chow mein, green bean beef, curry chicken, and salt n pepper fish. My favorites were the salt n pepper fish and the shrimp chow mein. The salt n pepper fish was crispy and flavorful and the chow mein was the right texture and flavored richly. I wasn't eating in the restaurant, so I'm not sure of the ambiance, but it is such a great thing to have a reliable kitchen available for a fast dinner when you're feeling lazy!

Angelito T.

Yelp
The food is similar to Panda Express and I rarely go to Panda... That should be enough of a review. Also doesn't appear very clean when you enter the location.

Colleen S.

Yelp
You're sleeeeeping on happy takeout if you haven't had it yet. Flavor is amazing and the portions are more than amazing.

Nin K.

Yelp
Great-priced Am-Chinese food that's more than generous with price/proportion ratio. I order primarily takeout and my food has been hot, flavorful and near-bottomless, as all Chinese takeout should ideally be. Plus the owner is super friendly and I'm always looking out to support local AAPI businesses. Happy Takeout gets a 5/5 from me.

Trish W.

Yelp
Efficient service, always good standard Chinese takeout food. The folks working are kind and fast with my order. Solid place, heaping portions.

Vanessa I.

Yelp
The nicest people with the best Chinese food. First time trying it and it was so so good. 10/10 recommend. The flavor is insane.

George K.

Yelp
Amazing Hhhh Hhggg Hhhhh d Hhhhh Yyggg Hhhhh Hhhhh Hhhh Gedetgg Jujjhhjjhhxxddggg

Kay L.

Yelp
I came onto this place by total accident cause someone posted a picture int he yelp app. I am beyond grateful that i did. My son and i had some take out last night and it was so delicious. Im so used to the prices being outrageous for to go orders but we got a-lot of food for a very good price of 11-12$. This will be my new to go place. Picking up the order was super easy and the staff were very friendly. Thank for a great first experience.

Lucas A.

Yelp
I'd like to preface this by saying that I have only ordered from Happy Takeover via DoorDash and got the same thing both times, so I can't speak to the experience of picking it up myself or dining in. That said, Happy Takeout offers a GREAT value for the price and is available very quick via DoorDash whether you order for lunch or dinner. I've been sick this week so I've relied on DoorDash to bring me meals when I didn't feel strong enough to cook or heat up frozen foods. I was feeling Chinese and looked through the highly rated takeout options available and remembered Happy Takeout. What's great about them is they offer an inexpensive dinner meal that comes complete with your entree of choice, fried rice, chow mein, an egg roll, and a cream cheese wonton - all for $11! Lots of Chinese spots will offer comparable lunch specials but you don't often see these types of deals extended into dinner or the weekends. I've went with the General Chicken both times and have enjoyed it. Lots of meal, decent level of spiciness, and enough food all together to make for 2 medium/large or 3 small/medium meals (depending on your appetite). I should branch out at some point and plan to. The good news is, whatever entree I get next, I know the chow mein and fried rice are great and the general chicken has been a hit twice now. One small complaint: I didn't receive napkins or utensils with my last order. Not sure if you have to request them separately on DoorDash or if they're just not included. Not a big deal considering the value (and less than half hour delivery time), but something to be aware of. I had clean utensils and paper towels so no problem here, though it could be if you've ordered takeout to avoid doing any dishes! What will I get next? No idea! But I have a feeling I'll be ordering Happy Takeout for delivery next time I'm not feeling well.

Melissa H.

Yelp
It's sometimes a hit or miss with food quantity. Great tasting! They raised their prices.

Annie L.

Yelp
PLEASE LET CUSTOMERS KNOW WHAT TYPE OF COOKIES ARE GIVEN. We received cookies without a label not fortune cookies. Luckily, I was fast enough to grab it from my daughter before she put it in her mouth because I saw the colors of the candy on it. My daughter literally could've DIED because she is ALLERGIC to PEANUTS. It was a peanut butter cookie with recess m&m on it. Overall, the food is super delicious. I was going to rate it 5 on yelp but the cookie incident ain't it. We ordered the brocoli beef, chicken spareribs and beef spareribs. It's all so flavorful and fresh. The brocoli wasn't super soft or soggy so that's awesome because most Chinese restaurants have it baby food texture. The eggrolls were good but no meat and the wontons were excellent. We'll be ordering again but I have to properly check the cookies next time.

Victoria-De'Jon J.

Yelp
I used DoorDash. Food came hot and was delicious. It didn't blow my mind, but it definitely hit the spot.

Kim L.

Yelp
Seriously the best Asian American dishes you'll find in Sac. They never disappoint. Great service and fresh food always!! I mean, just look at them working hard in the back. You can't ignore that kind of genuine passion, hard work, and generosity for a fast paced takeout restaurant. When's the last time Panda loaded up your tray like that? If you don't know, now you know.

Monica R.

Yelp
Bomb food! Came with all the utensils and everything. Really enjoyed this place and the service

Yesenia T.

Yelp
Portions are huge and super affordable!! Delicious too! Made my order through grub hub but noticed the prices are cheaper if you just call you order in vs ordering online

Maggie Q.

Yelp
I have been meaning to write a review for happy takeout for awhile! Love this place. I would recommend the salt and pepper wings - crispy and savory. Food usually is ready quickly and it's ideal for takeout. Great place!

Rajan G.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times. The questionable kitchen and hole-in-wall nature of the spot surely adds to the experience of having a loaded box of food, right? Well, until you find a fly in your food. From yelp it looks like I'm not the only one who has experienced this. I don't want to play fly roulette with my food.

Jenna L.

Yelp
Wow... what a thoughtful gesture. The staff super friendly and kind. The food and the price is amazing. I will definitely keep coming back thank you at eatwcass for this hidden gem.

L P.

Yelp
Had two orders for delivery. The Mongolian beef and salt pepper shrimp was so salty and way too much onions. I end up tossing it in the garbage I couldn't eat it what a waste of money. First and last time for this place.

David R.

Yelp
Excellent food. Super quick service. Very affordable dining. I don't think you'll get something and not like it.

Laura M.

Yelp
Got the Mongolian beef and walnut shrimp dinner plate and let me tell you I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the worst meal ever. Noodles and rice were so bland and rubbery. The Mongolian beef was mostly onions with just a few pieces of meat. And the walnut shrimp was horrendous. It tasted like grocery store pre-cooker shrimp. Food was just really bad and I ended up throwing away most of it because of how horrible it tasted. This is my first and last time getting food from here. Rather go to Yee Cheong Chinese Restaurant on Stockton Blvd that is actual authentic Chinese food.

Karla T.

Yelp
I'm not sure how anyone thinks this food is good , I ordered through doordash , I ordered shrimp Fried rice and veggie chow mien , the chow mien seemed as though as it was reheated because the texture of the noodles was way to tough for them To be fresh , there was a bunch of al dente veggies throughout the noodles and the flavor wasn't what I would expect from Chinese American food , the shrimp fried rice was ok the shrimp were not good at all and the rice as well gave me the impression that it was fried rice that had been refried , It's so heart breaking to waste money on food that's not good , yuck

Chylsea C.

Yelp
It's a good quick in and out place. A bit greasy cheese wonton was a bit stale. For the price it is what it is

Mahum H.

Yelp
Food is good! I ordered the walnut shrimp dinner combo and it was delicious! The only thing I didn't like was that they only gave me 8 shrimps in the walnut shrimp entree. I was hoping it would be full like the photos on yelp but the portions were small. Maybe they didn't have enough to fill it up like the did for the other photos on here but my order was small portions even for the rice and noodles.

Blessing Benita B.

Yelp
I had the Vegetable Fried rice and Battered Prawn. The food was delicious!! I honestly can not rate them enough. Once I come into Sacramento, I will be back again.

Sunil S.

Yelp
Amazing food every time they keep me coming back baby. Id say the standouts for me are the wings, general chicken, hot garlic fish is fire, and the salt n pepper chicken muy bien. Also the fried rice. Also the whole menu.

Christina L.

Yelp
This is the only Chinese restaurant that we eat at in Sac. It's our go-to place and are always so happy with whatever we order. The food is always fresh, delicious, and the perfect comfort food. Prices are good too. We love happy takeout!
