I believe the hospital should be made aware of the rudeness and unprofessional treatment displayed by Dr. Makhinson, a psychiatrist at Harbor-UCLA.
My son was hospitalized at Harbor-UCLA for five months and required ECT procedures, in which Dr. Makhinson was involved. The first time I spoke with him was when my son was refusing ECT treatment. During that interaction, Dr. Makhinson was extremely impatient, frustrated, and showed little consideration for my son’s mental state or our family’s emotional situation. This was particularly distressing, as I work in the medical field myself and understand the importance of compassion, especially in psychiatric care. Witnessing this behavior toward my son was devastating.
The second interaction was even more concerning, as Dr. Makhinson spoke to me in a threatening manner. This type of behavior is completely inappropriate and unprofessional, particularly when dealing with families navigating serious mental health crises.
I strongly encourage anyone receiving care at Harbor-UCLA—especially within the psychiatric department—to be vigilant and actively involved in their loved one’s care.
That said, I would like to sincerely thank the nursing staff, Dr. Bridgett, and Andy, the social worker. Dr. Bridgett was incredibly understanding and compassionate, and Andy provided outstanding support throughout this difficult time. Their empathy, patience, and professionalism made a meaningful difference for our family. I am deeply grateful to them, and I hope they continue to bring that level of care to their patients. May God bless them for the work they do.
