Harold’s Review - Soho - New York - The Infatuation

"Harold’s used to be a place called Harold’s Meat + Three - but they dropped the meat-and-three thing, and now they have a slightly different concept. These days, this spot at the bottom of the Arlo Hotel serves a few different pastas and salads, some small plates, and a bunch of different entrees ranging from salmon to fried chicken. Just about everything seems like it’s a little more expensive than it should be, but the food is solid, and they make a pretty good fried chicken sandwich. That said, unless you have some family in town and you need an inoffensive place where you can get a table last-minute, there isn’t really a compelling reason to choose this over other spots nearby." - Bryan Kim

Google
Do not leave this place without ordering a homemade cinnamon roll!! Best biscuits & gravy we’ve ever eaten….and trust me, we have been around over 70 years! 2+2+2 with French toast was MY favorite 🙂 THANKS ALI for great service and sharing that beautiful smile early in the morning.

Google
Came through during the route 12 sales so they were busy busy but they handled it with ease. Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves, my family included. The burgers were absolutely phenomenal and the lemonade is top notch. Will definitely stop by again if we're ever in the area. Keep up the fantastic work.

Google
This was our first visit and we will definitely be back! Clean, friendly environment and good service. Huge portions, very reasonably priced! The homemade cinnamon roll was the Best I’ve ever had! We loved it.

Google
Dined in at Harold’s place for the first time today and it did NOT disappoint! We tried the eggs, potatoes ( recommend the hash browns over red skin potatoes unless you prefer a home fry over hash browns), bacon, pancake and the star of the show, cinnamon roll!! Get the cinnamon roll with the pecans, bacon crumbles and maple syrup! The staff was great! Met Harold himself and his lovely daughter who provided excellent hospitality! Great experience, wonderful food and love the decor! We will be back very soon!

Google
Cozy atmosphere, friendly, efficient staff. Even though it was very busy on a Friday evening the food was delivered to our table in a timely manner. Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed our well prepared dinners and we will definitely be returning to sample more.

Google
This place is a gem. Unassuming building, but extremely pleasant lunch with a bloody mary. The hand dipped mushrooms are phenomenal, and the cold tuna plate hit the spot in style. Next time I drive thru MI, I will make sure to detour thru Brooklyn and stop here again. 👍👍

Google
Food was very good. Service was good, prices a little high, but worth the price, but it was crowded when I was there and we actually had to sit at a table with another couple we did not know or wait another 20 minutes at least for a table. Over all, I was content with the experience and will go back.

Google
Will probably not return. As others have noted prices have climbed dramatically compared to online menus. We chose takeout and as you can see by the photo this is the amount of fries you receive for a separate order of sweet potato fries that cost 3.99. Food is definitely mediocre (we had hot turkey sandwich, chicken wrap and club).

Yelp
We love Harold's (aka Harold's Palace or Harold's Fine Dining). The foods we've had: Club wraps & sandwiches are delicious. Beef manhattan is also very good. Chicken Alfredo is decent. Prime rib wasn't bad, it just wasn't seasoned at all. Service is always good. Just a cozy little place.

Yelp
There was a fly in my coffee, and the waitress could not have cared less, she acted like it was a common occurrence and no big deal.

Yelp
Always good food and awesome service! Their breakfast is so good! Bloody Mary's are very tasty.
google avatar

Gary K.

Yelp
Great fried Whitefish! Very consistent!! Sure that you'll enjoy your dining experience!

Julie L.

Yelp
The food and service are awesome here. It is our favorite breakfast place in the area. Their loaded. Bloody Mary's are the best I've had. Evenvirgin

Yelp
Great family size portions, friendly staff and good ambiance. Every time we visit my parents at their lake house, we make time to come in here because of the quality of their food and we always have a great time when we come. The staff is very attentive and as I mentioned the portion size are very generous. My wife and I shares he philly cheesesteak sandwich (you have a large selection of breads to chose from) and we also shared the Bacon Cheddar And Cheese fries (which are tasty). They also have some really good desserts. We shared the raspberry pie.

Yelp
We were in town for a collegiate race weekend at the speedway and saw this restaurant was nearby, thought we would give it a try. Glad we did, the food was good, the atmosphere was laid back and the staff was friendly. A lot of locals appear to come here. So that is saying something, right? Definitely give it a try.

Evan B.

Yelp
Service was quite preposterous it took 1800 seconds for our appetizer to arrive. They were quite temperate as well. Another 1700 for our food. Wrap tastes quite stanky biscuits slapped though lowkey.

Yelp
Let me tell you something right now. This place is the definition of a gem. On an all guys annual camping trip we hit this place up for breakfast on 9/11/21. Harolds Place hit every mark 7 for 7,all seven guys left happy as hell. Friendly courteous staff. Clean restaurant. Solid prices. And please let me know, where else can you find a Perch and Eggs breakfast special for $10.00? Homemade bread, nice quantity of clean tasty food served promptly. Harolds provided a menu with multiple unique and delicious options. We can't wait to come back, Harolds Place was an absolute pleasure.

Yelp
First time visiting this local option. I will be back. Relaxed, cozy, attentive staff and lots of happy chatter. The breakfast was fabulous with touches of homemade, thick white bread that is grilled instead of toasted. My meal was timely and cooked to perfection. Ordered a fabulous looking and smelling cinnamon roll to go. The menu has so many wonderful options and we will be back. Count on us becoming a known local!

Yelp
A gem near the race track. This place is known for their fish but I ordered the rib eye on first day. Thin cut, marbled, really well marinated and good seasoning, no steak sauce needed. A really good treat after a tiring day. The battered fish was fresh, the meat was flaky and soft. Wings was good (better than the tasteless B-dubs) and sauce wasn't needed. Came back the next day and tried their baked fish. Yum!!! Would come back here when the opportunity comes.

Yelp
I was a little iffy about this place because it's on a small town near our family lake house. I am impressed. This is family owned and let me tell you that the food portions and taste are amazing.
google avatar

Doris T.

Yelp
Just a lovely restaurant with great food and service. The food was made fresh to order. I ordered fried mushrooms and to my surprise, they weren't frozen! Battered fresh fried mushrooms! Everything was so good. But I've only known 2 other places that take the time to do fresh mushrooms. And not in this area. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. There's a fireplace in the dining area that gives you a feeling of home. I really like this place.

Yelp
After a watching day of racing at MIS we needed a place to escape this weird May weather; hail storms, rain, and 42 degrees. Harold's is just down the street, and was exactly what we were looking for. I never thought I'd order a hot chocolate in May. On this frigid day, I had to, and holy smokes, it was delicious. This was no packet/ powdered hot chocolate. It was fresh and delicious. Just thinking about it makes me want another. It was pretty much dinner time when we stopped in, so we went ahead and ordered some food as we warmed up. The grilled cheese sandwich is probably one of the better ones I've had in a long while. It was perfect. You can order the grilled cheese from a list of several different types of breads and cheeses. We got the onion rings appetizer, and they were so good- large and fresh. Beer selection is very limited. Our waitress was so quick, friendly, and attentive. I don't know that I'll go out of my way to come back here, but if I find myself at MIS in the future, I'll keep an eye out for Harold's.

Yelp
Quick stop while lake house shopping. Wonderful service and food, would recommend! Crispy chicken Cobb salad was fantastic! Double cheeseburger and fries were awesome!

Yelp
Harold's is a solid 4 star place. Not 5 star only because it's a casual and friendly place, and as such they do drop the ball here and there, just like all of us do. However, the staff are consistently friendly, the food is always better than expected, and the atmosphere is family and local centered. It just feels good to have a place close by that doesn't deal in pretension or deception- just good, homemade food! I strongly recommend the fish options at Harold's, from the generous platter of delicious perch filets, to the mouth-watering walleye dinner, they do not mess around here. Did I mention the fried chicken dinner?? Let me just say, don't make the mistake of skipping the chicken. Some places struggle with fried chicken, but not Harold's! Pick a couple sides to accompany your dinner, and save room for a slice of pie or a giant cinnamon roll!! Next, I'll have to check out the breakfast! Gotta wake up early for that!! Chalk these guys up as one of the Best of the Irish Hills!

Yelp
After a long day of searching out local antique shops, we were starving and took a chance on this diner off the beaten path - Harold's Place. Delicious burgers, good beer on tap and friendly service. So pleased with this hidden gem.
google avatar

Kassindra R.

Yelp
I had a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings, my husband had grilled cheese on sourdough with sweet potato fries. He frequently gets sweet potato fries and said their homemade dipping sauce was very good. My food was delicious too. My burger was cooked as ordered (side note: they ground their own beef in house) & the batter on the onion rings was thin & crispy- yum!! Service was quick & friendly. They had several dessert choices including peanut butter pie - got ours to go. Our table was just as you entered the restaurant and therefore you can hear the kitchen conversation and everyone that gets seated walks by you. It wasn't an inconvenience or bothersome for us, but be aware of this and ask to be seated further into the restaurant if the chatter or heavy traffic would be distracting for you.

Yelp
Food is good and place is always clean inside, service staff are very rude and impatient. I've given it many tries but I will not be coming back
google avatar

Yelp
Harold's Place is a decent family style restaurant in the Irish Hills of Michigan. It's not a fancy place. The walls are adorned with NASCAR paraphernalia and hunting decorations. The menu is fairly large with traditional American down-home type fare. There are sandwiches, salad, soup and home cooked meals like chicken, meatloaf and mashed potatoes. There are also boards that features specials every day. Harold's is also open for breakfast and serves a pretty good breakfast. Harold's isn't any thing crazy, but the food is good and there are not really many restaurants around. If you're hungry and in the area it's a good place to stop for a meal.

Yelp
This place is out in the country down US12. A log cabin like house with a fire place in side make the atmosphere in here really nice. Waitresses are friendly and the food is super good. If you like omelettes try the Mexican and ask for sour cream on the side. Also the rye bread that's toast is grilled and is so good. Love the hash browns. Never been here for dinner but if it's anything like the breakfasts you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great place we stopped at on a daytrip through Irish Hills. Wonderful fresh Walleye fillet, onion rings home made goodness, coleslaw was great too. Service great!!

Yelp
My wife, son and I ate at Harold's Place for the first time the other day(Sunday). I had the Cheeseburger medium done with with American cheese. Wish they had pepperjack cheese but the options are American, Cheddar and Swiss. The cheese was good but the beef is the star of the show and I loved the cooked crispy bun. Delicious burger. My wife had the Biscuits & Gravy and she enjoyed it. My son had the Southern Fried Chicken and it was absolutely delicious. The breading was light and crispy/flavorful. Honestly this place was quite the surprise and kinda bummed I hadn't found it sooner as a local. If I had one area I'd mention that didn't affect us as a family but could others is the wait time was quite awhile and the server while sweet wasn't the most attentive. We had trouble getting our bill paid and had to go flag our server down from kitchen. We always give the benefit of the doubt though and it was a bit busy when we showed up although mot so much when we left. All in all we enjoyed our visit and would come back.

Yelp
We like the food as most of our dishes have tasted good and were fresh. However, like a few others reviewers on this stream, I have to agree that the service is amazingly poor - EVERY SINGLE TIME. You wait..wait wait. And it is only half full. We have been about 6-7 times in the past year and each time we laugh about how the food is good but expecting poor and slow service. Too bad. We are probably on our last effort of going there.
google avatar

Erik W.

Yelp
My rare burger came out well done. The second burger was rancid. Our waitress never noticed our empty drinks and I had to wait 15 minutes at the counter to pay my bill while the cashier cleared out her CC machine and messed with the register.
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
I had an amazing late lunch here at Harold's! I ordered the chicken tenders with sweet potato fries and a garden salad. Everything was hot and fresh and delicious. The beer was cold and hit the spot. I couldn't be happier!

Frankie H.

Yelp
Let's get this out of the way first- the food and sense of community within Harold's is unmatched. However, it's difficult to enjoy these things when Harold's obscure hours leads my group to driving ALL the way to Harold's only to find that it is closed. Mind you, we checked the online hours. Didn't make a difference. If you're going to take away our breakfast, at least put it online so we don't waste our gas money. The homemade white toast is to DIE for.

Jerry L.

Yelp
Ordered the prime rib for takeout. It was ready within 15 minutes. It was a nice thick cut, and seasoned just right. Baked potato was salted and cooked nicely. Green beans were fresh with a nice char. Staff was friendly, and the restaurant had a nice relaxed atmosphere when I stopped in. I'll be back to eat in next time.
google avatar

Jerry H.

Yelp
So love Harold's fish and sweet potatos and always leave room for dessert..Wish it wasn't just one a year...Always stop when I come from Wisconsin for the NASCAR weekend at MIS
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
Great place for a family dinner with that small-town atmosphere and friendly people! Great food and their prices, i'm especially in love with all you can eat fish on Friday... It's amazing! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for good food while in the Irish Hills

Michelle B.

Yelp
The only person that even earned the 1 star was our poor waitress who had to deal with the aftermath of one of the worst meals I've ever had. From incomplete meals, to raw chicken, to hair in the food, to cooks who refused to correct the wrongs, to no management on site to even air complaints to, I couldnt have been more disappointed. I can assure you we will NEVER step foot into this restaurant again. I would warn everyone to avoid it even if EVERY other restaurant in the air is closed
google avatar

Mickie W.

Yelp
Bad food, bad service. Since it was the ONLY place around we stopped in. My burger was so overcooked that I had to send it back. My second burger was spoiled and inedible. Our waitress was useless and we had to wait for the cashier for more than 15 minutes just to check out because she didn't know how to fix the Credit card machine. After having a terrible meal and bad service you would think the management would have said don't worry about the bill but instead I had to stand there and wait and wait and wait... We will NEVER go back even if it means driving 30 minutes out of the way.
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
Best restaurant in this area, especially for lunch. Nice atmosphere, with booths and table options available. Service was friendly and quick. Food is typical American fare - improved by a number of homemade options. I had bean & ham soup (excellent) and a sandwich of smoked turkey on rye with ample lettuce and tomato. My family members had baked whitefish (good!) and fresh vegetables (surprisingly good), Philly cheesesteak, and cheese quesadillas - everyone was pleased. Again, the service was excellent.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Best hand-battered chicken tender and excellent grilled cheese. Large portions. Tough Mudder finish line every year.
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
Great place. Stopped in for a beer with a buddy. Great service and friendly bartender! They have Bud Light, Blue Moon, and White Hatter on tap.
google avatar

Jeremy F.

Yelp
Updated interior now!!! Grilled cheese and chicken strips are a must! (Unless you don't like American cheese) I would definitely recommend making the trip (if you are going to be here anyway for Tough Mudder, it's an absolute post-race hangout).

Yelp
This place has been in business for over 30 years. Family owned "mom and pop" type place. The atmosphere is simple; mix of train decor, lake decor, and burlap art decor. Couple of flat screen TV's and Keno. Friendly waitstaff. I highly recommend their breakfast! Lunches are great too, big portions! Best fish fry and prime rib I've had in the Irish Hills! They have delicious desserts and they even serve alcohol. If you are looking for a simple place with excellent food, I highly recommend it.

Yelp
I can't imagine this place getting anything less than at least 4 stars. It's not fancy, but it's clean, well run, with good, & friendly service..most of the time. Sure, occasionally I've waited little longer than i would like for particular things like coffee refills, etc, but the food is almost always fantastic and usually if the service is slower than you'd like, it's because they've been slammed. As a chicken tenders aficionado, I can say that they have the best I've ever had! EVER! And the portion is plenty big enough to take home leftovers. The soup (especially the cheese soup)is so good that it made my 6 yr old grandson slump back in his chair, his eyes wide rolling in his head with a look of sheer rapture on his face. When they come to visit, he always asks me to call and see if it's on the menu that day. It's a very good, inexpensive place to eat with an extensive menu of comfort food. You will go back...trust me! Only problems I have found -- 1) they don't take American Express, which is a real bummer and has been the main deciding factor to not eat there at times. 2) the decor is cute for a diner (trains, race cars memorabilia and some other stuff)-- but with a full bar now, sprucing it up a bit to make it more of an intimate welcoming dinner and drinks place would be nice. But...all in all...I love it! P.S. The hot roast beef and hot turkey sandwiches are my 2nd & 3rd favorites. Piled high on thick, crispy Texas toast with perfectly cooked tender meat.... Yum!!!

Terry M.

Yelp
Follow up on review left 9/21/13 - Still great food, but the last few times we've had to wait for the check and then wait for someone to take our money at the register. They saw us standing there but kept doing other things...a little irritating but the food is worth it.

Yelp
While visiting a friend out in Irish Hills for the weekend we discovered this place on US 12. Decided to give it a try. This is a legit, family owned place. It's the type of place you find in a small town, where everyone knows your name. We arrived around 5:30pm on a Saturday. Not a lot of people and were seated quickly. The menu is just the right size, not too large and not too small - just right. They even provided a specials menu. I went with the Chicken Tenderloins. The were awesome! They didn't taste frozen and seemed to be fresh. It only cost $10 and came with two sides. My friends had the Perch and the Prime Rib special. I also went with the pumpkin pie. I can say for sure, the pumpkin pie was made from scratch as was everything else we had. The service was good too. Very attentive to refills, etc. The dining room was very clean and nicely decorated. I will visit again and try something different next time.

Rufus M.

Yelp
Wonderful breakfast, the homemade cinnamon roll was to die for...not to mention good coffee

Daniel F.

Yelp
I had the ribeye tonight. Big disappointment. No price given on the menu. It was about 1/4" thick, And was $18.99. I was with a group of guys, many ordered the house special sirloin. It was laughable. We all left hungry. Our waitress was efficient and pleasant or it would have been a total disaster. Definitely won't be back. Ordered pie for dessert to try and leave somewhat satisfied. Another disappointment. Harolds has really gone downhill.

Alicia F.

Yelp
This was me and the family's first time here and I am super disappointed with the overall experience. The quality food was not up to par with the prices ... For example my dads chicken tender plate was a tender short and only had a small pile or fries-- chicken was run of the mill Gordon food service deep fried-- the food was unimpressive to compare to the prices-- service was good it wasn't her fault at all

Tyler G.

Yelp
The food is good, but VERY overpriced. The restaurant has solidified an older atmosphere, one of the highly advertised dishes is liver... Having children and due to the prices I wouldn't recommend this place, there are better alternatives in the area.

Connie P.

Yelp
We love this place. I have read the previous reviews, and yes, sometimes the service is slower than it could be but usually okay. Our food is always great. I am amused by the review of someone in July/2011 that basically copies a review from Feb/2011. If you are going to insult a business, come up with your own reviews. It is disappointing that YELP lets that go by. FISH DINNERS? AWESOME!

Denny B.

Yelp
My whole family enjoys the place each time we go. Not fancy, but good food. A lot of items are home made. The all you can eat fish on Thursdays as well as Fridays makes it a bargain. The place knows how to handle a big crowd well.

Jojoand D.

Yelp
We Have been eating @ Harold's Place For Six Years Nothing But Good Food Every time & Good Service As Well If You Want Some Down Home Cooking & Atmosphere Go To Harold's!!!!!!!

John R.

Yelp
