How the Grand Canyon Restaurants and Railways Reduce Waste

"A café located within a well-known lodge that has earned a four-star Certified Green Restaurant rating by excelling at measuring and reducing energy, water and food consumption and at managing waste streams. The operation uses forecasting tools to limit spoilage, buys sustainable ingredients, employs energy- and water-saving equipment, and participates in the park’s broader waste-reduction and used-oil recycling initiatives." - Emily Hochberg

Where to Eat at the Grand Canyon | Eater Vegas

"The Grand Canyon is referred to as the Inverted Mountain for a reason. It requires hikers to do the easy downhill part first and the uphill part last, which can make for a confusing and exhausting day. A rewarding end to a challenging hike can be found at Harvey House House Cafe. Located inside the Bright Angel Lodge, this casual restaurant serves lunch and dinner. Look for local beers from nearby Flagstaff, Williams, and Chandler and one-third pound burgers topped with unique ingredients such as peach bourbon chutney, poutine, hoisin ketchup, and fried avocado." - Krista Diamond

Dec 29, 2025 We checked into the Bright angel and walked into the Harvey house for a quick bite. We were given a very lengthy list of food listed on the menu that they were out of. It seems whoever was in charge of ordering food was incompetent as this was not a new situation. We settled on the fish and chips, and it was good. We had breakfast there the next few mornings. That was excellent. great service and good-sized portions.

Google
Mediocre food but excellent service. Ate both dinner and breakfast here. The pot roast was a very small portion for the price and nothing special. The southwest Caesar salad was unique and tasted pretty good, while the molten chocolate cake for dessert was pretty great. Biscuits and gravy were good but the huevos rancheros eggs were flavorless and the tortillas tasted stale. Our waiter at dinner was amazing! He was funny and helpful, digging up a chocolate cake for us even though he thought they had sold out. He also chased us down when we forgot our credit card after paying the bill. Thank you!!

Google
Excellent food and very good service. Prices are very reasonable, especially given you’re in a touristy area. Kids meals were big and especially cheap, which we appreciated having two kids with us. The low reviews are perplexing. Great place to get a meal at the Grand Canyon.

Google
Stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon during our visit to the Grand Canyon. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices as to be expected for the tourist area (some items seemed pretty decently priced, while others seemed a little high). -Green Chili Tamales (good quality/taste) -Chips Salsa & Guac (desperately needed seasoning) -Side Southwest Caesar Salad (large portion, good taste) Overall, would recommend for a nice, casual sitdown meal during your break visiting the Grand Canyon.

Google
Great for large groups large tables are available. They offer a Thanksgiving plate and a limited menu. The Thanksgiving plate was just below average. Cold turkey, with a hot plate. Green beans from a can way over cooked. The mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce was good. $39 for the plate definitely not worth it

It is quite clear for the bad reviews. The font desk (reception) guy is really unkind. I am not sure whether he is a family member of the restaurant or not, he is not kind. Except that, things are great. Foods are delicious (french fry is not salty and very crunchy), staffs are kind and restaurant is well-organized. Good experience.

Google
Ok kind of surprised bc its a tourist spot but the wings were extra crispy and flavorful. My vegan friend said her burrito was delicious. Very accomodating. Great for the price. Service was 🤌.

Google
For atmosphere, you can’t get much better than right by the Grand Canyon. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced. I got a half-sized southwest Caesar salad that was super good. I also got the fajita chicken quesadilla, and it was pretty big and I had to give half to my husband. It was pretty good, but the salad was better. My husband loved the fish and chips!

Yelp
It's a basic diner located in a state park but, in the 4 meals I ate there, had no problems at all. Both breakfast and dinner were solid and service was fine. It's not high-end cuisine but it was walking distance from the El Tovar (in which we were unable to get reservations for dinner) and had a good selection of basic meals. I really don't understand the hate for this place, it's a comfortable sit-down meal at a reasonable price.

Yelp
We stayed one night at Bright Angel cabins. After catching the sunrise over the canyon, we headed in to Harvey House Cafe for breakfast about 8am. We were seated quickly and that's where the good ends. One server for drinks and then a long time before the actual server arrived to take our order. We all got something different but the biscuits and gravy I ordered, I had to send back. The gravy was so salty it was inedible. My other three at the table all sampled it too and said the same. I was really looking forward to that hearty breakfast but I couldn't shake the salt out of my mouth. The server replaced it with the oatmeal with bananas, toasted coconut and nuts - so says the description. Only the coconut wasn't toasted, and the oatmeal was very dry. Like it was premade in a steam table for too long. The waiter offered some milk with the oatmeal but what he brought was cold!! So much for having a hot breakfast. We had to repeatedly ask for coffee refills from anyone else we could get to stop by our table. Another $100+ meal that was super disappointing. Diner food not done well with poor service. They need to put the oatmeal in a different bowl too. This was awkward to make wells to try to add milk to make it edible. Smh

Yelp
We came here after a long hike in the Canyon. The food was good and the service was quick. We were happy with the experience overall. I got the Harvey burger, which is a double cheeseburger. It was really good! The fries were great, too. My husband had the bison burger. We split some chips with guacamole and queso dip. The guacamole was lacking salt, but we added salt and pepper and it made it a lot better. The food was all pretty good, and we were happy to have full bellies. After lunch, we walked outside and had a beautiful view of the canyon again. The restaurant is also just steps away from a couple really nice gift shops.

Yelp
This was a nice and convenient restaurant within the National park next to the South Rim. Reservations are not required and they offer a pretty wide menu. The servings were pretty large and you can definitely share some of the entrees. The food is nothing special, but overall a good experience for any family that needs a casual sit down meal break while visiting the Grand Canyon.

Yelp
After a long R2R hike Todd was the perfect welcome. The food is what you would expect from a park cafe. It came out quick and hit the spot. Thank you Todd for making us feel like family.

Yelp
We just ate a delicious meal here. We split the Side Caesar Salad and the Double Bacon Cheeseburger. The Salad was Mexican style with corn, black beans, tortilla strips, and cotija cheese. So tasty. The Burger was served on a toasted bun; with nicely crisped bacon; and a slice each of lettuce, tomato, and onion. It came with a side of perfectly seasoned French fries. We were so hungry and the food looked so yummy, we began eating before I took a photo. LOL! And for dessert we decided to try the Chocolate Lava Cake. Our server was friendly and efficient; and we enjoyed our view from our window table.

Andy G.

Yelp
We got to wait to be seated and the guy was yelling to a server. Then items on the menu were not available and no options provided. No Ambiance unless you like smelly and outdated music. Prices were high for what they serve. Looking forward to the day servers are replaced with friendly robots

Yelp
WOW FACTOR? Both the salmon dinner and the pulled pork sliders were just delicious - so good! HAVE AGAIN: See above!

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch during my bachelorette weekend and our Grand Canyon tour. The wait time was very short for a busy Saturday afternoon. The food was pretty good everyone enjoyed their meals. However, we had the best prickly pear margaritas of the trip here and we are still talking about them in the group chat. Our server was friendly and accommodated our multiple checks. She also recommended the corn tamales after assuring me that she makes her own at home and is picky about other people's tamales.

Yelp
Excellent service, casual and comfortable vibe, great draft beer list, and awesome vegan and vegetarian options! The black bean tortilla soup was delicious! It tasted like a roasted tomato soup base and was loaded with black beans, other beans, corn, and topped crispy tortilla strips. The soup was spiced with wonderful warming flavors you'd want on a cold canyon evening. The vegan burrito was heavy but healthy and definitely hits the spot after a long day of hiking. The veggies were all super fresh and cooked and seasoned perfectly. The guacamole was top notch!

Yelp
The service was great. She was personable and very attentive. We shared the bison burger medium well, a house salad and the tortilla soup. The soup and salad were great, the bison burger not so much. It was kind of bland nothing to write home about. Maybe more seasoning. You can't beat the view so we are not complaining, lol.

Yelp
Of all the places we visited during our 9 day tour around the Grand Canyon, south, east and north, this was easily the least impressive place that we ate. During our second day in the Grand Canyon Village, we decided on the Harvey House Cafe for lunch. My wife had the protein bowl, and I had a turkey wrap. Neither was anything exceptional, but they were both okay. That alone would get them 3 stars. But I'm going down to 2, because service was not good. We waited awhile for our server to show up the to take our orders, although an assistant got us our drinks pretty quickly. The food then took a bit too long, and our server never stopped back once to check on us. We gave up on refills or a to-go cup, and just eventually flagged him down for the check. And that was the icing on the cake. $50 for a salad, and wrap, and 2 soft drinks. We learned on our trip that prices were expensive everywhere we went. But these were a little over the top for what we got. Had we had a couple of beers...maybe. But not for a simple lunch with soft drinks. You have other options for lunch at the South Rim....find them.

David P.

Yelp
Just ok. Ordered the bison burger cooked rare but it came out very raw, the meat wasn't even warm in the center. And after looking around I was very surprised at how dirty the place was. I really don't think the booths have ever been cleaned.

Yelp
I have literally been eating at this restaurant for 60 years. I hike with a group in the Grand Canyon and we had just hiked out on the morning of 07/05/24. This restaurant sits a top of the rim of the Grand Canyon. You would think they would try to be very accommodating to people who have recently hiked the canyon. They were very unaccommodating. The food was in-edible and I have been at this restaurant when they had five star chefs working in the kitchen, but on this particular day that Cook couldn't have got a job at a Denny's. Me personally, I will never return to this restaurant and I highly urge you to try one of the other fine dining experiences available nearby. This is the worst!

Yelp
Dining in the Grand Canyon Village prices were to be expected - wait staff was friendly - western themed dining room- I had the fish and chips fries were great / fish came out greasy but tasty fillets/ got a large saucer of tarter sauce and 1/2 cup of coleslaw should have been the reverse - hubby had a dbl bacon cheese burger and fries which he enjoyed - would recommend this place if in the Village to eat was a nice break and stopping point on our sight seeing adventure - service was quick no long waits when we were there at noon on a Wednesday in summer

Yelp
After spending the morning hiking and riding the red shuttle to Hermit's Rest and back, we ate a late lunch at the Harvey House Cafe in the 1935 built building. The massive dining room with its wagon wheel chandeliers and rustic ceiling gave the place a nice atmosphere. The five of us had spaghetti with meatballs, pot roast dinner and two salads with soups. Everything was good, but not as good as the El Tovar selections that we had earlier. Service was great.

Yelp
Rosie served us and she is phenomenal! Super nice and efficient!! Food was great value for the price.

Yelp
Pleasant friendly place, not too expensive given its location. Service was friendly and quick. We had an unexpectedly good chicken quinoa bowl - last thing you'd think you'd find at a mass appeal restaurant for a national park audience.

Christine D.

Yelp
Great spot. Awesome location in town with lots of history. The food was superb. Lots of choices to try. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. Friendly staff that accommodated all our needs.

H C.

Yelp
Food was below average. I ordered the pasta and it tasted like school lunch. The pot roast was average. Service was okay. Bunch of staff standing around and few waitresses hustling around. Where is the manager?
google avatar

Yelp
Do not recommend. Well, breakfast was ok, but dinner was horrible. We tried dinner here on one of the two nights that we stayed here. After the first night of tasting how bad it was, we opted for something else. Breakfast was meh, but it was decent.

Yelp
Get the pot roast it is AMAZING!!!! The food came out super quick and served is great!

Yelp
A beautiful dining hall inside the Bright Angel lodge. Service was very friendly and no major complaints to be had. The food was reasonably priced when compared to other park dinner options and tasted pretty good overall. Kids meal ended up being a really good value for the price.

Yelp
its really four and a half (only because my dad didn't like his scrambled eggs for breakfast) but all the adults REALLY liked their dinner entrees the night before (they were all different and all VERY good ) and i liked my chicken tenders and french fries with ranch (but the french fries were a little hard to chew). my breakfast was really good i got pancakes and maple syrup was great and everyone was very nice to us. and it was very cool that the restaurant is almost a 100 years old. but it was also nice because it was right next to the Grand Canyon! Yelp
Good option if you're desperate for food. We had to wait 45 to get a table. We didn't want to, but it was late and we had come from Indiana where it's a different time zone (it was past midnight in Indiana time) and we were starving. At about 10:00 pm we finally got a table and ordered. Little options, but my brother and I got chicken tenders. If you don't know me, chicken tenders are not my usual order. I was originally going to get spaghetti Alfredo, but they were out of it and we had to order something else. The food wasn't bad tasting, but it just didn't have flavor. The servers were nice, but it was just really busy late at night.

Yelp
Not worth the wait. In fact the food in the Grand Canyon in general would put me off staying in the National Park again which is so disappointing. Overpriced junk food that should not be served here. The fish was like something from the Vishnu basement at best - 18 million years old if you've not done the walk yet. Suggest you don't stay overnight and just come for the day and get out of the park for all meals or bring your own food! Feel bad for the servers who are doing a great job and this is definitely no reflection on them.

Paul M.

Yelp
Sat in this restaurant next to one of the natural wonders of the world made me wonder how in the world they could serve such absolutely diabolical food. I could get better grub from a dumpster. The problem is that if you are staying at the Grand Canyon all of the options are atrocious. Bring a tea kettle and some instant noodles. You will be far happier with the results!!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delish!! I loved this place! Ate the stew and completely forgot to take a picture for y'all! It was so good and savory it was here one minute and gone the next! The kids menu was great and the lunch was soul warming! Will be back for sure!!

Yelp
Cafe is located inside Bright Angel Lodge. As we entered to get our name down in the wait list we were "greeted" by someone who was lost and confused as to what tables were clean and ready. She finally decided to just write our name down and have us wait. Not to waste time once we sat down, we began looking at the menu displayed outside so we can place our order as soon as we sat down. There's different menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Waited 15 minutes which wasn't bad at all. Server was really nice and did an awesome job attending us. I can't put it more blankly than to say that the food was 80 percent worth two star rating, with the exception of the fries which were delicious. Burger toppings were fresh and provided on the side for easy picking. Burgers were edible (we were super hungry after walking the rim and back) so we ate. Both burger buns were dry, flavorless, and began to fall apart in first bite. My chicken was unpleasantly dry and bacon flavorless. Definitely not worth the wait or money.
google avatar

Yelp
There is no atmosphere or views. Only about 7 tables with The COVID. You are eating in a bar basically. Relax with a Grand Canyon Pilsner - excellent. Kristopher was a very good server - friendly and attentive. The Wings appetizer was very good and could easily be shared by 3-4 people. The fish and chips were not very good, but remember where you are. National Parks restaurants are not the reason people come. However, the burger was very good - cooked perfectly, large, juicy, and tasty. Would have the burger again. I opted for a side salad instead of fries. Suggest skipping both the fries and the salad. The salad is just some greens with a side packet of Neuman's Own dressing.

Alfonso L.

Yelp
Our dessert was taken to another table, the guest in that table stated that did not order dessert, waitress just play it off came to our table asking if everything was ok. We ask for the desserts than she realize she had delivered our desserts to the wrong table, grab the desserts from that table and give to us playing off like nothing has happened even one of the desserts was already started eating one of the desserts
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
Our party of five all enjoyed our meals. Three of us had Fred Harvey Burgers, which were tasty and satisfying. The service was kind of bland but entirely adequate. Overall, we were glad we stopped by.
google avatar

Junior T.

Yelp
Great place for lunch. Got a Beyond Meat patty and it was really well prepared! Service was quick and friendly!
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
Food was ok and the staff was very friendly. Maybe it was just the salads but the quantity didn't match the price (the spinach salad with added chicken was about $ 17-18 after taxes). We left hungry and had to purchase additional food at the grocery store. I would recommend to make reservations if you are planning to eat there.
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
The Harvey burger was fantastic, definitely worth the $$. Fries were very good also. This place is the best place around the canyon to eat.
