DC's New Restaurant Openings - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Originally opened in 1931, Harvey's Butcher Shop has long been a beloved DC institution. Now, the Union Market location is transforming into Harvey's by Soko, under new ownership from the Soko Butcher team. Expect a similar selection of quality meats—pork chops, lamb, chicken—and sandwiches loaded with meat and all the fixings on French rolls." - omnia saed

I love a butcher… and this place makes me want to continue to use butchers for the rest of my life. I have ordered so many different types of meat from this place. They know my name at this point lol not only is their butchery, great, but they actually make lunch food as well and that’s even greater! This is only a couple of photos that I tagged of items I’ve purchased from them, but this is my most recent set as purchases. Each thing I got I love and have already used all of it lol enjoy, and when you go, don’t be afraid to have a conversation with the staff they’re all knowledgeable about all of their different products and meat selection! ❤️❤️🔥

I was pretty excited to try this butcher out so I got a NY strip. It looked a bit dark around the edges but I thought that was due to dry aging. Hint: It was not. When I got home and opened the packet, I was introduced to the kind of smell you don’t want your worst enemies to experience. This steak should’ve been thrown out days ago and is a serious health hazard. I can’t believe no one in the shop noticed this. I live in Arlington so going back to return this would be an hour and a half trip which I don’t have the time for. It’s a complete waste of my $40. Very disappointing experience, would not recommend.

Google
Amazing, high quality meat! We don’t buy our ground beef, chicken, or our steak anywhere else. I’ve had better steaks from Harvey’s than most restaurants. The staff is also incredibly helpful and kind. Highly recommend sourcing all your meat from them.

Google
As far as I am concerned, Harvey's Market is the best butcher in the city. Their selection of local, pastured meats (as well as speciality and some conventionally raised products) is excellent. They will answer your questions, cut items to order, and let you order particular cuts in advance, which is really helpful for unique cuts or when you're planning for a big dinner party. For instance, Harvey's is the only place I know of the city where I can order whole lamb shoulder - a delicious cut that is hard to find elsewhere. Because of their high-quality selection, Harvey's is no doubt more expensive than your standard grocery store. But for local, pastured meats it is competitive with what's sold at area farmer's markets. And for their superior product, I find it worth it. And, they have a sale section with some typically excellent details! I never make a visit to Union Market without peaking into their sale section on the lookout for a good deal.

Google
Excellent butcher / sandwich shop in Union market! Had the pastrami & swiss sando which was spot on but not MY deli style if that's what you are thinking. My wife had the turkey & cheese which was packed with fresh turkey.

Google
Might be the best cheese steak I’ve EVER had. Fantastic work. Great sandwich and great employees

Google
Harvey's is one of the best, most reliable butchers in the DC area. They've been a staple in Union Market for as long as I can remember. They have everything you could ask for, from A5 Waygu and Dry-Aged ribeye to more esoteric cuts of beef, other animals, and fowl. I've gotten fat trimmings to make tallow, and some of the best bacon I've had ever. They try and source their meat locally, and with some notice can get you whatever you need for your feast. Super nice staff. Highly recommend.

Google
Super friendly service and nice selection. And great to support locally sourced meat. Will be back again soon!

Yelp
Everything inside Union Market is consistently delicious so it's no surprise that Harvey's Market is cranking out some amazing deli sandwiches! This time I went with the roast beef sandwich, it is a fairly classic roast beef sandwich but the flavors are bold. From the juicy, tender, thin sliced roast beef to the creamy horseradish sauce it was all perfect.

Yelp
This butcher is located inside of Union Market in the back right corner of the market. They have tons of meat, all types of cuts and they will cut it for you the way you like it. I wanted to get my dad a Tomahawk steak for Father's Day, I called ahead the day before to make sure they had it and they went ahead and cut one off for me to pick up the next day! I figured it would be a decent sized steak but boy was I wrong, when I went to pick it up I saw in the case this gigantic Tomahawk, the largest I've ever seen, I should've took a picture but with the virus I try getting in and out of places as quickly as possible! They greeted me immediately, showed me the steak, joked around & I was on my way! The steak was HUGE and delicious, I need to get my meats from them more often! I recommend everyone come to this butcher!

Yelp
Super friendly customer service. Hands down the richest, most delicious bone broth ever made! So good you can warm it and sip it on it's own.

Yelp
Excellent meat market in DC for your specialty items. I was looking to purchase a brisket and called to make sure they had some available for the size I wanted. The man I spoke with said I could come by and he would cut the brisket size that I needed. I ordered a 4 pound flat brisket with the fat trimmed. I was very happy with my purchase and the customer service. As I was checking out he offered me some tips such as the temperature that the brisket should be when it's done. The price seemed reasonable to me and they have a great selection of other meat. Harvey's Market is located inside Union Market. I had no trouble finding parking outside. I look forward to coming back very soon.

Yelp
What a great find!! A butcher shop inside Union Market. Bought all sorts of meat for the weekend . Friendly service and they cut your meat according to your liking. Great selections of beef, pork, chicken and bacon!! They have an assortment of sausages as well. I will make a trek back when time allows.

Tonya R.

Yelp
Staff is friendly and most helpful! There was a mix up on my smoked turkey for Thanksgiving and they went above and beyond to correct it, including paying for my smoked turkey from their provider!! Major thumbs up!!

Yelp
Located inside of Union Market Harvey's is the perfect place to pick up relatively local meat the is fresh, without hormones, antibiotics. They have a LOT of different products. Beef, pork, chicken, duck, rabbit, you get it. They also have organ meat and fat grinds, bone broth, and they make sandwiches. They have some meat pre cut but are happy to go in the back and cut something for you on the spot. They also have a large selection of dry aged meats. So for Valentine's Day we picked up some dry aged filet mignons that were already nicely tied up. We also got a small bit of Japense Wagyu which is pricy but it's Japanese and it's Valentine's so we splurged a little. The meat is vibrant and the staff is kind, curtious, and knowledgeable. The only place that comes close to Harvey's in my book is the Organic Butcher of McLean but Harvey's has much more variety. We will absolutely be back to pick up more things.

Yelp
Went for the first time yesterday and got some picanha and some grass-fed lamb. The service was top notch. I chatted with George who was incredibly friendly and told me a little bit of their history. He has been there for 40 years! I grilled the meats and they were absolutely incredible. I didn't put much seasoning on them, the picanha was steakhouse grade and very juicy. The lamb however, was the best lamb my girlfriend and I have ever had. We are excited to have found our new butcher shop.

Yelp
Harvey's Market is one of DC's oldest butchers nestled in the back of Union Market in NE DC. It's open when the market opens and offers any meat you can imagine from prime rib to pig ears. The meat you buy here will be a little more expensive than at the grocery store, but it's also better quality, more tasty, and you can enjoy Union Market.

Ashley G.

Yelp
My husband and I purchased two ribeyes and two filet mignons here on 2/15/20 for a fancy dinner. We spent over $100 on the meat. As soon as we opened the filets, an intense odor of bad meat filled the kitchen. We instantly knew that one of the filets was off--there was an odd brown coloring that was instantly visible and different from the other filet. We cooked the filet just to see what would happen--the smell remained and we had to throw it out. We also had to take the trash out because the rank smell stunk up the kitchen, to put it bluntly. My husband emailed Harvey's the next day to inform them of the issue, but he never got a response. So they sold what was visibly bad meat (and the smell was unmistakable) and didn't have enough pride in their business was to do the right thing for the customer. This is not a quality butcher shop.

Yelp
If I want to make an authentic Jewish style dish, I travel to Union Market to get the meats and accompaniments from Harvey's. There's always someone knowledgeable behind the counter, and they have items that other butchers don't have. For example, I wanted to make authentic chopped liver, and not only was Harvey's the only place that had fresh chicken livers, they even had schmaltz in a refrigerated case. Perfect.!
google avatar

Yelp
We shared a pastrami reuben. It was grilled to perfection and everything was marvelous. A little pricey at $14 but we shared and that makes it a better price. For that price you do receive a crispy yet gooey wonderful sandwich and a bag of chip

Meredith M.

Yelp
My name is Meredith and I visited Harvey's Market once again to buy fresh guanciale pork to make a delicious spaghettis carbonara . I had another superb customer service experience today. Lenny and Joe greeted me with a friendly smile, professionalism, expertise and extremely prompt amazing service! They even cut the guanciale for me the exact same size that I needed per the recipe I was following. Their dedication to excellent customer service reflects great credit upon themselves and the Harvey's Market brand! They are the epitome of excellence and true professionalism. Lenny and Joe deserve the biggest raise and recognition for his amazing friendly service and professionalism! My rating is 5 stars undoubtedly and I will be back consistently. I highly recommend this butcher shop for excellent prices and meats! They truly care people and are community centered! :o)

Yelp
Huge portions and the meat is impressively fresh. The cuts are amazing. My corned beef Reuben was $14 and came with kettle chips and a pickle cut. Tons of meat on the sandwich. That said, I was the only person in line when I ordered and it took more than 20 minutes to get my order.

Josy S.

Yelp
Waited 30 mins for sandwiches when it wasn't that packed. Literally had two workers standing around while the Hispanic woman busted her ass making sandwiches

Yelp
I decided to try this place when I was buying milk at Trickling Spring. In my support local businesses I had been hunting for a butcher shop. I bought some spicy Italian sausage. Bought them home, cut them up and cooked them with rice. The flavor was good and there was a nice bit of spiciness. They were $9.99 per pound, a bit cheaper than the Red Apron shop a few stalls down. They've got all sorts of cuts of meat. Premade burgers made from grass fed, hormone free cows, the most delicious looking thick cut bacon I have seen. Give this place a try! Go local.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
We buy meat products from Harvey's pretty regularly now! If you're wanting really great quality, this is the place to go. If we're making a huge pot of red sauce, this is where we purchase our sausage. My bf also recently purchased a pound of beef, which was on sale for Veterans day. He thought the quality was really good. They have a wide variety of meats + cuts for all of your cooking needs.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
It is astounding to me how few butchers there are in DC so it is wonderful to have finally made my way to Harvey's. While there I stocked up on lamb for easter, got a whole duck, and osso bucco. Great selection of items. It was quite pricey but that is to be expected due to the lack of butchers in the city and their location inside Union Market. I felt that their staff were rushed and pretty snarky in a way that I didn't appreciate but also in a way which was not a reason not to go back.
google avatar

Eleanor G.

Yelp
Ordered a t-bone steak and it was incredible! Juicy, tender and bursting with flavor - clearly from a great farm with great cows, cut by a great butcher. Highly recommend!

Michael P.

Yelp
Bought some "dry aged steaks" the energy of the people working was great and the views were nice i guess that's what you pay for when you buy meat from here because the quality is giving Walmart meats

Yelp
I love Harvey's Market! This butcher shop has been around since '31; holding a rich history, they have a spot in the Union Market and offers a variety of cuts - pastured beef, grass-fed and grain-finished, dry aged, naturally raised, and free range poultry - all from local farms (Roseda, Copper Penny, Polyface, Wagon Wheel Ranch, Rocky Meadows, Shenandoah Valley Lamb, Langenfelder, and Gunpowder Bison & Trading Company). I love how the butchers, George and Marty, both personally visit these farms, striving for top selection and healthier choices. I was able to chit-chat with Marty (!!!), and he was very patient and informative on the different types of meat that they had - it was just so awesome in how fresh and lovely they all looked!!! I purchased some ribeye and some Cheshire pork chops (those pork chops were AMAZINGGGGGGGG - so fresh, so tender, and SO JUICY!!!), and I can't wait to go back and continue being their regular customer - be sure to stop on by from Tuesdays-Thursdays, between 4-7PM - they have a 'HH' discount special going on where you get 10% off :D The chicken skin, the bacon, the young chicken, and the sausages all look fantastic, so I'll be checking those babies out - I'll be back :D +ask for Mr. Marty :D +fresh meats and poultry :D +no antibiotics/hormones +supports local farms +HH discount specials - 10% off between 4-7PM, Tues-Thurs

Yelp
A great butcher where the employees know meat and are happy to help a person out. I ordered pork-belly for a porchetta and they did a wonderful job at trimming and prepping the belly for me. Greg was very helpful and I know that I found my local butcher in the DC area.

Yelp
Excerpt from the tales of Living in the Age of Coronavirus: I've started getting into bone broths as a way to boost my health and what started as utilizing chicken carcasses in an instantpot has now sprouted into a true love of fragrant and sumptuous broths (which, you can essentially substitute in any dish that calls for water and is 100x better than the canned stuff). So, my friend who has been a broth man for years tells me about Harvey's because it matters where you source your bones. Located in NE DC's Union Market, this shop sources "locally" (MD VA PA and DE) and all their meat is organic/grass fed/non-GMO/etc so you know it's gonna be top quality. Everything looks so good though, I bought boneless beef bits for a stew once my broths finished. Harvey's offers many different types of cuts of meat from bacon to ribs to sirloin and strip steak. You'll likely find lamb, veal, beef, pork, duck, chicken at the counter. Everything is brightlit and presentation is clean. They are probably a bit more on the pricey end - I paid about $30 for ~2/3 weeks worth of broth* between ox tail, marrow bones, and knuckle bones. (*TBD) Covid-19 update: Harvey's is working with delivery app "Mercato", but are also catering to walk-in clients. Their hours are fluctuating (today, Friday they are open until 7pm), so just call ahead to make sure you can pick up the order if you walk-in. And bring a facemask! To enter the union market you need a facemask, there's a yellow vest guard at the door ensuring its the case.

Yelp
Amazing quality meat and impeccable service. Everyone was engaged with the the customers that were waiting in the line. I was offered help by two different people ultimately served by one. He was assisted by another woman who worked at the front counter. She was very polite and informative; they were able to slice and clean up the meat that I wanted to my liking. Quality oxtail and the best price in DC.
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
I really like this place. They are friendly and the quality of the meat is great. They also offer a wide selection including hard to find meats that may not be available at your local grocery store. Price-wise they are reasonable. It's cheaper than Whole Foods but not a steal.
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
I haven't actually been on-site, but my lady was in the area and picked up some ground lamb kabobs for dinner - they were delicious! Each skewer had the right amount of meat. The ground lamb had seasoning, fresh herbs and fresh garlic chopped generously. The flavors were great. Not too salty which I was concerned about based on my past experiences with other uncooked kabobs from other establishments. Prices were reasonable, $8 for two skewers. I can't comment on service, but would love to come back and experience Harvey's myself!
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
This butcher is located inside of Union Market And it is worth the visit. They have a variety of meats, some of which you can't find at Whole Foods or Red Apron. If you want a specialty meat, such as beef belly, they can special order it for you.
google avatar

Denise T.

Yelp
Great place to get quality meat. They will butcher the meat as necessary for you which is a service that isn't easily found these days. I love their bacon. If you are making a special breakfast do yourself a favor and pick up some of their bacon.
google avatar

Rory M.

Yelp
The place is wonderful. Freshly butchered meats at a convenient location in the city. I introduced myself to George and Marty last weekend with my wife since we both moved to Trinidad recently. Marty let us know that once we try the chicken thighs we bought we'd never be able to buy chicken anywhere else... We fried it at home on a cast iron skillet for brunch with friends and he was right. You can absolutely taste the quality. We're both excited to now be so close to a quality butcher for our meats.
google avatar

Tanika M.

Yelp
If you consider yourself an instagram chef and are looking for prime meat, HARVEY's is the place! I was referred to this place and was interested in trying it. So when I found myself never Union Market, I made sure to stop by. This is a butcher shop, but don't worry, you not going to see animals hanging. Instead, you will approach a stand window filled with beautiful cuts of various meat. Unfamiliar or undecided on what meat to get? No worries. They have amazing customer service. They pretty much read your face to know you need some help...haha. They will ask you important questions and make sure you get the best choice. Pricing? Very reasonable. I was nervous that it would be expensive because of the quality, but they are reasonable. Harvey's is my go to for special occasions.
google avatar

Lee G.

Yelp
1st time trying this butcher stand and it WILL NOT BE MY LAST! Awesome and tasty looking cuts of meat, multiple choices, and super friendly & prompt customer service! Only got some thick cut bacon this visit, but the butcher told me where it was from... love supporting local businesses! So many great choices for special occasions or your everyday needs too! Not sure what I'll try next, but the lamb chops looked really good!
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Great, fresh meat. Reasonably priced. FANTASTIC, helpful butchers and staff. A+.
google avatar

Yelp
High quality meat - Harvey's custom-ground burger mix made for delicious burgers this weekend. I'll be back for the jaw-droppingly thick bacon.
google avatar

Kristy L.

Yelp
As mentioned i cooked the pork shoulder from Harvey's Market for Christmas. Everyone LOVED IT! Everyone who ate the pork said it "melted" in their mouths. They loved how smooth the pork was :). Again, i am very happy with purchasing the pork here. And i will forever do so as long as i live in the area :).
google avatar

Evangeline H.

Yelp
Wow what a find! The real thing. George is so knowledgeable. We found the place by searching meat market to find the perfect la,b for Greek Easter. Our guests are in for a real treat! Do you know why pasture raised is different from grass fed.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
Hand down the best meat available in DC. If I can have Harvey's, I'm an omnivore. Otherwise, I'm a vegetarian. That simple.
google avatar

Velvet D.

Yelp
I was there with my mom and I must say the meat looked clean, the conversation with the butchers was great and the prices were outstanding (in my personal opinion coming from NYC where everything is higher and moving here trying to find a butcher). I will be returning and hope to be a a monthly customer for all my meat products!!
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
They helped me pick out the perfect cut for my first time making Beef Wellington! They were so helpful and friendly and the filet was delicious!!
google avatar

Kaitlin D.

Yelp
Could not love them more. As a newly interested and ambitious cook I'm able to show up and explain what I'm trying to do and they always steer me in the right direction. It feels good to do business here!

Scott S.

Yelp
I don't live near Union Market and, so I don't get to Harvey's very often, but they are always my first choice when I want to do something special, or need a specialty item (schmaltz, chicken livers, etc.). They're also always have great and friendly customer service, and happy to do special orders if I give them advance notice.
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
Harvey's Market is excellent. The butchers are helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable - all the characteristics I could ask for when I'm slowly comparing prices and deciding what to have for dinner. They clearly take pride in their craft and are excited to share their results with customers. Their prices are very reasonable and I have never been disappointed my order. I don't like spending my free time buying groceries, but I'll happily make an extra stop (if necessary) at Union Market to visit Harvey's.

Devan S.

Yelp
I ordered a turkey sandwich from this place. I waited 30 minutes, I watched people who ordered 20 minutes after me get their food 10 minutes before me. And my sandwich was COLD, how hard was it go make a turkey sandwich within a reasonable amount of time? Is a 10 minutes wait time for a cold sandwich to much to ask??? Plus the sandwich was NOT that good...
google avatar

Sabra R.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place! George, TT and the rest of the staff are so incredibly nice and knowledgeable. This is my go-to spot for all of the ingredients for my beef bone broth (marrow bones, beef tendon, chicken feet, beef knuckles). Grass fed and reasonably priced. SCORE!

Caiti K.

Yelp
BEST Sandwiches!! I had the best Pastrami and Swiss sandwich here for lunch today. They clearly care about sourcing the best ingredients! The customer service was great as well.

Yelp
Great review in Bon Appetit: http://www.bonappetit.com/people/out-of-the-kitchen/article/harveys-market-union-market-dc
google avatar

Jaye V.

Yelp
Two things I've seen here in the case, readily available, that I have never seen anywhere else: Benton's famous smoky bacon... and Duroc pork cheeks. I bought them out of the latter at a great price and made the best pork green chili EVER. They also have both picnic and Boston butt pork shoulder readily available daily as well. Great especially for those days you don't have time to special order in advance - you can also call ahead a day to get butt with the skin left on. They carry both organic/pastured/local meats - and also famous/artisan meat products that may not be. Also they sell jars of historic DC mumbo sauce =).
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Best butcher in the city, bar none. Particularly great with beef - had a fantastic prime rib which my guests raved about months later. Great turkeys for thanksgiving as well. Very accommodating.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
This place is a rare find. An old-fashioned butcher--you can walk in, ask them what's good today, and be pointed to not only the best meat, but be given a full story behind it--where they got it, how the farmer raises the animals, etc. I make my own chicken broth for cooking, and only get my chickens from them (the Lancaster PA chickens--freshest on Fridays!) and it makes an absolutely superior broth. The dry-aged osso bucco I got from them a couple weeks ago was out of this world--my Italian friend's eyes lit up as she tasted the end product, realizing that this was the real thing. I used to buy my meat only from Whole Foods to make it was treated humanely, raised hormone-free, etc--but now I go to Harvey's as much as possible, with Whole Foods as a secondary option. It is also notable that they have old-fashioned cuts of meat for the home cook: I make stews that have been passed down in my family from Eastern Europe out of beef marrow bones and oxtail, and they always have plentiful (and high quality) supplies. Finally--if you don't see it in the case, just ask!

Brandon E.

Yelp
Harvey's is the best butcher in town. Their selection is incredible, their meats are extremely high quality, and their staff is friendly.

Yelp
Great butcher inside the Union Market. I bought some chicken and sausage to try, they taste much better the stuff one get from Giant! More pricey but worth it.
