The final meal of our weekend trip to the Dayton area was breakfast. To be completely honest, I picked the Hasty Tasty Pancake House exclusively because they had a squished penny machine. Arriving just before 9am, the restaurant was very busy, but we were still seated pretty quickly at a double booth in the side dining room. Concerned that breakfast would take forever, I encouraged our children to be decisive, and as such, we were able to place our full meal orders when the nice waitress came by to take our drink orders. All told, the five of us ordered a wide variety of meats and styles of eggs, pancakes, and waffles. Before tip, our bill came to $55.23, which felt reasonable for the large amount of food we ordered.
The restaurant was decorated like a mom and pop diner from yesteryear, complete with vintage license plates hanging from the wall, as well as antique bric-à-brac. Additionally there were historic posters and magazine articles sprinkled about, extolling the virtues of various races, air shows, and the city itself. The squished penny machine was located in the main dining room and was in good working order, so while waiting for our food, the kids and I happily made pressed mementos of our Dayton trip.
In surprisingly short order our mountain of food began arriving, and right away we were all impressed by the quantity we got. My wife said her omelet was good, while all three kids really liked their combinations of meats, eggs, and pancakes. Personally, I found my sunny side up eggs and waffle side to be very good, while my bacon was perfect. We also appreciated how our waitress did an excellent job of keeping our four coffees topped off.
PROS: good food, reasonable prices, attentive staff, and a squished penny machine!
CONS: we had no complaints
Overall, I rate the Hasty Tasty Pancake House as being Very Good, and would definitely return the next time I am in the area.
