A Weekend Vacation Guide to Portland’s Central Eastside | Eater Portland

"At Hat Yai's casual Belmont location I enjoyed the iconic fried chicken and flaky roti paired with a sticky, earthy Malayu-style curry for dunking, while alternatives like brisket curry, bracingly spicy Southern Thai ground pork, smoked duck curry, and stir-fried flank steak with red curry paste offer compelling variety." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

16 Portland Restaurants Open for Lunch and Dinner Every Day | Eater Portland

"The only thing better than ordering Hat Yai’s fried shallot-topped, Thai herb-spiced birds — they come whole, halved, by leg, or by wing — is ordering them in the combo, complete with sticky rice, flaky layered roti, and creamy curry, a rich dipping sauce for all of the above. The combo is, in a word, iconic. Hat Yai’s chicken pairs well with cooling cucumber salad and cocktails such as the nutmeg-spiced coconut mango horchata or tamarind whiskey smash. Locations on both Killingsworth and Belmont are open for lunch and dinner daily." - Thom Hilton

13 Stellar Curries in Portland | Eater Portland

"Earl Ninsom’s counter service restaurant Hat Yai is probably best known for its Southern Thai fried chicken. When ordered in the combo, it comes with a Mary’s free range thigh and wing, pan-fried roti, and sticky rice, which all make stellar vehicles to dip into rich, thick, coconut milk, cinnamon, and clove-based Malayu-style curry."

Southeast Portland’s Hat Yai Finally Opens This Tuesday - Eater Portland

"The beloved spot for fried chicken and roti is swinging open doors on SE Belmont, with its classic chicken and roti sets, chilled soups, and hard-to-find seafood dishes. The long-awaited second location of Portland’s beloved Southern Thai restaurant finally opens next week. Hat Yai, coming to SE Belmont Tuesday, June 11, will be a bit of a departure from the original Northeast Portland restaurant, with everything from spicy cured mussels to shrimp paste curry with fresh bamboo. Hat Yai, Earl Ninsom’s casual Thai restaurant, is a stalwart on Portland’s 38 essential restaurants for dishes like shallot fried chicken, Malayu-style curry, and blisteringly spicy ground pork salad, but Ninsom says he wants the new restaurant to feel distinct. The restaurant will have a number of new dishes, including more seafood and lighter fare (as he promised last year). Ninsom wanted to bring back favorites from Southern Thailand he struggles to find in Portland, including a shrimp paste and curry dish with fresh bamboo. 'It’s one of the famous dishes in Hat Yai city,' he says. 'I had it there and I thought, ‘We need to put this on the menu. People can tell us that it sucks and we’ll take it off, but hopefully people like it.’' Because the restaurant is opening as summer arrives, Ninsom’s opening menu will also include a few chilled soups, including a chilled kanom jeen with fish balls and a chilled turmeric soup. The restaurant will also include a few back-pocket favorites of Ninsom’s, including a cured mussel dish that debuted at his renowned Thai tasting menu spot Langbaan, complete with spicy herbs and the fermenting liquid. Down the line, Hat Yai’s second location may begin doing table service and offering some imported-charcoal-cooked fare, but for now, Portland should expect the same counter-service-style dining spotted at the original Northeast Portland restaurant." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden
