13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine - Eater Houston

"Hawallano excels in preparing large, handmade pupusas stuffed with meat, beans, and cheese, and they’re served with traditional curtido, El Salvador’s beloved crunchy fermented cabbage slaw. The pupusas alone are worth the trip down Gessner, but the sweet fried plantains stand out as some of the city’s best." - Christina Autry

I love the shrimp cream soup. It's my favorite. I've tried other Salvadoran spots and it's never the same. The service isn't the best (they are not coming back to refill your water) but it's forgiven cause of the food. I've been coming here for years even through I no longer live nearby. It's worth the drive.

We're on a mission to try more local places in the area. The Hawallano has been on our list for a while. My dining partner was craving the sopa de gallina. You get lots of veggies, a serving of rice, and 1/4 grilled chicken. Very filling & very tasty. I love pupusas, and wanted to try other items like the fried plantains and the chicken tomal. My favorite was the chicken tomal. Lots of flavor and moist texture. The fried plantains were ok. Not much to mess up and served with mayonesa. Now the pupusas were extremely hot when they came out. My favorite was the bean and cheese. My least favorite was the plain cheese, just great tasting. Although the pupusas were not very crispy. Service was good and attentive. My only complaint is the smell of the dining room, there is a heavy smell of grilled chicken. While it smells delicious, it is overwhelming.

DISGUSTING! Kitchen Smoke in the dining area I told the manager to fix it but he game me a lame excuse . My aye were ichi for the smoke How has Honestly it's not even worth it to eat while the dust and black mold falls on you and loved ones. They really need to shut this place down and power wash the soul back into this place. I would be EMBARRASSED as the owner of this place to have black mold and the layers of dust be all over my restaurant.

DISGUSTING! How has the Health Department not shut this place down yet? The ceiling matches the service. The girl that waited on us today looked like she was already annoyed that she's even working. Her fake happy attitude was extremely obvious that she hated being in the building. If you hate it so much just quit OR be happy you have a job at all and just try to make the best of it. I could not enjoy my meal knowing how disgusting the place was with the dust and MOLD growing and caked on the ceiling and all the awful decorations they have. The 2 girls servers just stand around talking instead of going to extra mile to dust and clean the place up. The ceiling was leaking over 2 tables and the only thing they did is put 2 buckets down to catch the black moldy water WHILE you sit next to it and eat. No signs or anything blocking off that area. The food was a joke. Are the prices good? Yes, that's the ONLY good thing about this place is the cheap prices. Honestly it's not even worth it to eat while the dust and black mold falls on you and loved ones. They really need to shut this place down and power wash the soul back into this place. I would be EMBARRASSED as the owner of this place to have black mold and the layers of dust be all over my restaurant.

Definitely authentic...I think. I had to use nearly all the spanish I knew to get seated and order...no english spoken here. Plates are in plastic, drinks served in styrofoam, telenovela blasting on the TV and great food! Can't wait to come back and try the whole fried fish. Definitely a place to visit for a quick delicious and affordable lunch

Yelp
Muy buena la comida. Se tardaron un poco con la comida pero valió la pena la espera. Todo muy sabroso.

Yelp
El desayuno completo me gusta mucho, los frijoles molidos fritos con tortilla recién hecho... deliciosos

Yelp
I love this place but I'm giving them a 3 star just because it's supposed to be "Salvadorean" restaurant and they don't have salvadorean horchata!!! They don't have huevos con chorizó either! Besides these issues food is good.

Yelp
11-01-2022 tuve una mala experiencia en mi comida, encontré pelos en un caldo de comida,le dije ala mesera y no me dijo nada al respecto, y cuando fui a pagar me cobraron el precio de toda la comida super mal, el servicio y la comida...

Yelp
They have the best pupusas in town and yuca con chicharron. The person who left a bad review talking about why they have uncooked seafood near the register is dense. That platter is obviously just for show i did not know people were that taciturn.

Yelp
Garlic fish, queso papusos, jalapeno rice. Oh my lord, best lunch i've had in Houston. I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Pupusas revueltas here are ON POINT, they have those much sought after burnt cheese bits and the flavor of the filling is exactly what I was hoping for. And the curtido is delicious. Pupusa spots are definitely hit or miss, I'm so glad I came here. The to go service was quick despite there being a lot of people seated.

Yelp
Can't believe I found a great authentic restaurant in houston. This is by far great food and service. The food is amazing the portions are large and the price is unbeatable. I ordered a pan con gallina it was $5 and a desayuno plate It was also $5.I have to say this has been best Salvadorian restaurant in houston. There were a variety of drinks available maranon, sebada, tamarindo, and Jamaica but no horchata. But the food, service and price made up for it. I'm so happy found this restaurant.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant last week with a friend of mine from El Salvador. She says this is like back home. We had the vegetable soup with chicken. A cheese pupusa and chicken tamale. The soup was fantastic, a lovely broth with chunks of perfectly cooked calabasa, carrots and chayote squash, yum. The chicken, a roasted breast on the side, was a real "yard bird" the flavor was rich and chickeny, Like what chickens used to taste like before mass cultivation and breeding muffled the real taste. The pupusa was tender and que rico!!! el sabor. OMG. Rich hints of green onion in the melted cheese surrounded by a light but crispy corn exterior. So good. The Tamale was delicious , but I was so full we took it home. We also had some juices with our lunch, maranon, the juice from the cashew fruit. Delicious and not overly sweet. Service was very good, and a nice selection of traditional condiments are available too. Worth a visit!!

Yelp
Great Salvadorian Food. The pupusas are delicious filed with cheese, beans or chicharrones. The seafood soup is ok. They have a variety of juices, the Jamaica juice is good. The yuca and pork grinds are yummy! The tamales are the best! Plantanes are great too.

Yelp
Great Salvadorian food! Lots of Salvadorian favorites at great prices. Their pupusas are delicious and so are the tamales. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but give it a chance and you'll be pleasantly surprised! Glad we did! We'll be coming back!

Yelp
I was really in the mood for pupusas so my coworker and I started looking up places and this popped up! So glad we came! We had their pupusa rellena, chicken tamales and fried banana. OMG we were in awe of how big these pupusas were! And the chicken tamales had so much flavor and bits of chicken and potato in every bite. The fried bananas came with cream. A bit of the fried banana with the cream was AMAZING! All of that food (plus I ordered to take some home for my husband) only came out to 22 bucks. WHAT?! I will be back very soon. So satisfied.

Yelp
I've been to several places looking for yummy pupusas and this place is the best! Fast, cheap and authentic!!! I'm not giving it 5 stars because other items on the menu are kind of pricey and not that good..
google avatar

Candice K.

Yelp
Delicious pupusas! The mixed ones were the best with pork and cheese. We'll definitely be back!

Shason B.

Yelp
Great pupusas. Was in the area to get mangonada across the street but wanted some pupusas before. Best I've had in the city definitely (and some good curtido).

Yelp
This place is easy to get to, on the west side of Gessner just north of Memorial City Mall, so get over any angst you have about going to Spring Branch, please! Inside, the look is kind of sparse, with walls half painted in lime green, the El Salvadorian flag on the wall, Salvadorian money showcased, and those gold-rimmed chairs. Help me, but I think they represent that El Salvador is no longer ruled by a monarchy and is a republic. The menu is in Spanish only, so bring your dictionary or Spanish-speaking friend. Truthfully, if you have some Spanish knowledge, you're probably OK. There are a lot of fish dishes, but I had a delicious pupusa filled with cheese. My companion had the beef steak, which was accompanied by wonderful rice, salad, beans, and what appeared to be fried tortillas coated in cheese, but they were little wedges much thicker than tortillas. A cortada jar was on every table. A little spicy, but good. Service by a young, helpful woman was good. Price: can't be beat. Less than $15 for two people. BTW, if you like soccer, they have a large-screen T.V. playing the games.

Yelp
This place is great! Not too expensive.. lots of great typical Salvadoran dishes.... Pupusas etc... but also great cremas.. fish etc. Eat here pretty regularly when I'm not dieting.
