Why Portland’s Food World Loves David Lynch | Eater Portland

"A deliberately low-key, divey Buckman-area watering hole since 2006, this spot got a significant refresh in 2024 when new owners Alana Boldrini and Otis Richerson leaned into Twin Peaks—“We should make the back room Black Lodge-themed, and then maybe the rest of the restaurant can follow,” Boldrini says. Walking the narrow galley-style bar that links the two rooms, I sat there on a sunny Wednesday as day-drinkers gave way to the evening crowd; a framed oil painting of Special Agent Dale Cooper looked benevolently over us, one of many Twin Peaks–inspired artworks across the walls, the menu, and even the bathroom, and there’s usually an episode playing on one of the TVs. The place channels the comforting collision of light and dark Boldrini loves about the show and that small-town feeling where “everybody knows each other” and looks out for one another." - Ben Coleman

Google
You've got to check out this spot! It's a fantastic local gem—the food is surprisingly great for a bar. The real treat is the hidden music venue in the back, complete with a spacious dance floor and pool tables for when you need a break. Plus, parking is easy in the neighborhood, so you can focus on the fun!

I went here for the first time the other night and it was a nice experience. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. They have a nice food menu, I got their smash burger with fries, and honestly, it was one of the best burgers I have ever tried. I then got a handful of drinks that night. I find this place relatively affordable. I think they mentioned they were going to stop their open mic comedy night, which is sad, but, they had a back room in the bar that was set up for shows. The service was also fast, and they were very welcoming to their guest! 10/10 recommend this place. They had a dark atmosphere but I loved the vibe of the people and the bar itself. I would definitely come back here again.

Google
I’ve long been a fan of the Hideaway. But the current owners, Alana and Otis are just absolute treasures who’ve REALLY improved the place. I adore the twin peaks theme and the food is OUTSTANDING. Truly awesome how much they do for the local music scene too.

Alison Q.

Google
Best spot in the neighborhood, smashes all my expectations! All the events are super fun and supportive of the community. Food is great and drink specials always hit. Alana and Otis make everybody feel at home. So many of my friends show up for Tuesday karaoke!

Google
Absolutely love this spot with the new management. Their burgers are awesome, and the people that work there are true gems. Excited to try their other food once I can pull myself away from their burgers.

Google
Stumbled upon this gem during happy hour. Got the smash burger, you can tell by the first bite the meat is GOOD. Owner/ bartender/cook was so welcoming and friendly. Can not rate higher than 5 stars but if I could, I would give unlimited stars! Thank you

Google
I went here for the first time and I love this place! Totally unassuming hang! The first thing I noticed was the great music! I love that there are no TV,s hanging from every corner, the service was over the top friendly, the service was fast and friendly. They have a back room with a stage for music and comedy performances. The smash burger is delicious! Also a nice outside area to hang.

Google
Cool spot. Great service, fun decor. Music space/ pool room in the back is huge. Good place to see a show.

Yelp
I love this Bar!!!!! Otis creates a warm, funny welcoming environment. The burgers are crazy good. I've seen some great comedy/entertainment there as well. I truly wish that I lived closer, because it would be my cheers.

Yelp
I loved this experience! They have outdoor seating and like a back room for their open mic nights. I am disappointed to hear that the comedy nights were being cut due to lack of demand, but, the atmosphere is great! I had a smash burger with fries and it was amazing. Probably one of the best burgers I've had. The drinks were also great, and I found the prices of this place inexpensive/affordable. The bartender was super kind and welcoming!

Yelp
Stopped by for a drink and a quick bite on the way to somewhere else. Love the dive bar vibes and the eclectic art collection. The menu had limited offerings, but the food was good enough. The drink was spirit forward (lots of bourbon) and the service was top notch. The only drawback to a Hawthorne joint is the parking. It's always easier to find a spot off the main drag and down a block or two.

Yelp
Had such a fun time. Service was awesome, as expected cause duh ;) Seasonal drink list was cute and funny. I had a delicious apple brandy cider (I'll hold off on the clever name, it's not PG ;) The food menu was great, it's covers many cravings and isn't overwhelming, and prices are fair. All the food I spied on that came out looked delicious. We ordered the elote which was creamy and delicious. Will be back for dinner and a show next time. Love you Alana! And nice meeting you Landon!

Yelp
Nice dive bar located on Hawthorne. They have plenty of seating, karaoke, pool tables, food and friendly staff.

Yelp
Big shout out to Otis. Absolutely lovely and helpful server who convinced us to come in! Very feasibly priced food. Good vegetarian options. I want to come back here to enjoy the live music, the good vibes, and the intimate ambiance

Yelp
This is one of the coolest bars/clubs in SE Portland. I've been to, and participated in, several shows here and they are always a good time. The bartenders are great people. The sound crew always puts out a huge effort to make sure the shows are enjoyable. The fries are amazing. Great spot.

Yelp
Do NOT hide from the Hideaway. It's currently 12:21am on a Thursday and here I am, eating a bomb $5 veggie burg with an ice cold DC absolutely destroying life and knowing that this fucker isn't a dry-ass bean burger from McMinimens warms my heart. Cool staff too. You know a burgers good when it comes in a paper wrap too. Bush did 9/11. Stay cool out there.

Yelp
I have gone here since 2005, and it's gone through a different management relatively recently. I still have liked it, since I've enjoyed the karaoke and Twin Peaks theme. The drinks were fine , I get cheap drinks , so I can't reference more expensive cocktails or food , and also for the most part have had nice conversations with other patrons and the bartenders. Unfortunately, several weeks ago I went there to grab a drink before home , and was specifically invited to sit next to this gentleman, who started calling me a Transphobe( no prior words exchanged) I did not react other than descalating and asking him what have I said to you that you came to that conclusion? In short the conversation was more abusive pejorative and ad hominin toward me . He was being aggressive towards me and the conversation was kept up by him. Unfortunately, the bartender was selectively monitoring and censoring. I came back in , no worries , not a big deal , but the bartender after serving me said , " I have to talk to you" Stated i was hateful , could not and would not extrapolate on that , when asked . I thought the bartender would be upset when a patron assailed someone with name calling with no instigation. But no....I did not , apologize for what I did not do or say . In fact had been graceful. So I was immediately 86'd Please engage in open dialog with critical thinking skills . You may be subject to this censorship and preferential experience, but I am hoping this was a bad judgment and night. But usually, I had not experienced that . By the way that man was there that night , I came back , no talk was given to him . Also I received a response of , " you were drinking" Yes I was served 3 drinks during the time . I'm glad the bartender was not drinking . But Gaslighting! I still have in general like of this place despite this , hence 3 stars

Yelp
Saw some bands there last Saturday. Also saw one of the bartenders and the sound guy acting butt hurt about something the band singer (Dwight Dickinson, satire, who has played there before) said. The employees were heavily triggered for some reason and yelling and threatening the band members. Even followed them outside and challenged these chill Gen-x guys to a fight? WTF? Anyways, nothing special about this place besides the music, so probably won't come back if those employees are there.

Shelly Y.

Yelp
Great service, beer selections, food and cozy intimate venue for live music. A great local bar with the best staff!
google avatar

Yelp
Funny bartenders. Under 6 blocks walking distance is preferred..... it's not that hidden. Right next to jam when your waiting in that crappy line.

Yelp
What a hidden gem, cool music, awesome customers a couple people from Canada a guy in a leather jacket gay people, straight people people of indeterminate gender everyone welcome just don't be an asshole

Yelp
Very delicious and hydrating water! Much needed after a nice warm day in Portland Also great vibes with live music, good prices and a pool table!

Yelp
Went to see a show on a Saturday night. Liked the music space, but the gal tending bar was awful. Ordered a whiskey-ginger with lime. She tells me they have no lime, when I can clearly see at least one in clear sight behind the bar. Serves up the absolute worst drink I have ever tasted. What should a whiskey ginger taste like? Ummm... let's see: 1. Whiskey; 2 Ginger. However, neither was detectable and either the gun was out of ginger, or she hit the tonic or soda button. Still tipped her, but, REALLY?! Pass on this place.

Yelp
Pretty sure the bartender was drunk. Came in for a quick drink and a sandwich to go. I've worked in the service industry all my life and have managed several bars so when I see someone mishandling money, I know what I'm seeing. I payed with cash, dude gave me change from his pocket. I sat there and waited for my sandwich to go and realized that it was obviously forgotten. Had there been a ticket printed, ya know, like when you ring shit through the register like a legit employee, I may have enjoyed a snack. But when I went back in to inquire, dude was apologetic and offered me a refund, of which he returned the money to me from his own pocket. All I know is if this place is going out of business, it may not be entirely due to the COVID restrictions. If dude gets fired, it's his own damn fault.

Yelp
Can't be too judgemental, I got a burger to go. I'm a line cook and I'd do it pretty differently, but for the price, time of day (2 fucking am), and convenience, I don't have any complaints. I'll for sure get another burger from them when it's late. 4/5 on execution, not bad at all and I enjoyed it.

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times now. Last night we went for a full, non-happy hour meal and I really enjoyed it. I got a black bean quesadilla that was about $9. My husband got a hot dog and clam chowder. There was one bartender who was really nice. The food It came out quickly and hot and I thought my quesadilla was really delicious. It was much higher quality than typical dive bar food - I would have been really happy with it at any restaurant or brewery. Husband got an old fashioned and I tried it, then I regretted not getting one too. It was the tastiest old fashioned I've had. In total, our hot dog, clam chowder, black bean quesadilla, two beers, and one old fashioned came to $30. We have never had a disappointing experience here. It's a pretty great neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Cool Hole In The Wall With $0.25 Pool Tables! Friendly Service from the bartender who seemed like a pretty laid back kind of guy makes transactions simple. I really liked the $0.25 pool tables and the dartboards in the back room! Looks like they have live music since there is a stage in back with speakers all over... That would be cool to see too, but alas we found this place our last night in Portland...... They have some decent BBQ chicken wings, though I wasn't a fan of the spicy wings... All in all this place is great for what and where it is...

Yelp
Happiness in Being Hidden! I love these places. They've been there forever and yet hardly anyone but the neighborhood (and Yelp fans!) knows about them. There's something sweet about that, and the HH is a real gem. This review should probably be a 3.5 star. First of all, this is Portland to a P. I love that. Plenty of veggie options on the menu, funky cool staff, pool tables(free!), good beers and drinks(go on Whiskey Wednesday!), and a great laid back atmosphere. It's a little worn inside, but a classy dive should be right? Worn doesn't mean dirty.....it's a well kept place for sure. The menu is small, but big on flavors. Burgers, sausages, sandwiches, and salads are on offer here and they're pretty darned good. I was told the veggie burger was pretty amazing.....I wouldn't say amazing but pretty darned good. Great soy based vegan patty that actually stays together! Fresh veggies and cheese and a decent bun with chips for $10.50......I'm good with that. You can upgrade to fries, tots, etc., but for another couple bucks isn't worth it. There's also a nice veggie hot dog option as well. For the meat eaters they use local Zenner's which is cool. Great place overall and very good service. They go the extra mile here....they even made me a fresh squeezed lemonade when they ran out of iced tea!!! You order at the bar, and with a small kitchen they can get backed up in a hurry, but in a place like this you shouldn't be in a hurry anyway. You come here to relax and hang out with friends. Extra Tip: Background music can get pretty loud......just be aware!

Yelp
Even when it's early and they're slow, the service and environment here is fantastic. Everyone is so friendly and seems so happy to be here - great energy to hang out with!! Also, this place is categorized as a dive bar but is gritty enough for those us who are divey but nice enough that you could take a date here for dinner and pool. ALSO POOL IS ALWAYS FREE!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Laid back....friendly....hide ur face place. It is dimly lit with the bar towards the back. The service is super chill. They have some funky drink discounts like on Tuesday when you get hooked up for wearing a mustache. Girls included if u want to draw one on you're face. They have a few pin ball machines in the back and a couple pool tables. Drinks are well priced even when it isn't happy hour. Good little joint.
google avatar

Yelp
A decent cocktail, a righteous nacho and friendly service. A casual, somewhat grungy, neighborhood/local bar. Good tunes. Did not rate higher because they truly have the worst unisex bathroom that we've experienced in years. Nothing like being hit with urinal smell, wondering how long since the john had been cleaned. That said, not a bad place, and we respect their connection to Renner's.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. I love the set up of this bar. They are pet friendly and the staff is also very friendly. Would come here again

Yelp
Do you want a high brow establishment to impress your inlaws and law firm friends? Do you like to sip on expertly crafted martinis while listening to smooth jazz? How about a menu filled with the finest of organic local free range ingredients harvested by a Swedish supermodel? ...Then go somewhere else! It's a solid bar with free pool and stiff drinks. Does it host some grungier folks? Yeah, it adds color to the place. Is the service staff into waiting on your every need? Nope, go to the bar and order your f'king food. I adore you guys, I will forever be a regular.

Yelp
Everything was blur after the double shots of Maker's Mark that my friend bought me. All I could remember was that my pretty buzzed DL made everybody in the bar sang me Happy Birthday even though it wasn't my birthday!!! We were celebrating my success in getting my United States citizenship, so his excuse was that it was my American birthday. Also more stars because they play Lady Gaga - Bad Romance, Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of The Heart, and more of my favorite songs. Even though I didn't request them. The bartender has good taste in music and like always, great minds think alike.

Yelp
This is the type of space you would get verbally abused for by some curmudgeon of a professor in design school. The entrance is timid. Where's the circulation? Why is there such a dramatic separation between the front and the back? It's severed. The material palette is questionable, are you sure about all that black? Where's your central gathering space? I don't understand your logic. WHY WOULD I GO HERE? And you, you wannabe designer, would stand there, dumbstruck, face to face with someone with more years of experience that you've likely been alive. You'd glance at your drawings and your model, hoping... PRAYING... that the answer to all of those questions was somewhere in there (it's not) and that you had just glossed over it (you didn't). So you take a gulp, and figure if you're going to fail, fail big, and finally manage to sputter out: "Because... well... um... it's AWESOME." There's absolutely no rhyme or reason to anything at the Hawthorne Hideaway. Yet it's almost a refreshing that hodge-podge knows no bounds. No concept, no theme, no cliché vibe that's so rampant in the hippest of hip neighborhoods. When you can walk in at 5:30 on a sunny weeknight and leave to a dark night sky after 8:00 pm without realizing how many hours you've just wasted, that says something to the enjoyable nature of the place. It's a fantastic spot to kick back with friends for a casual drinks. The bartender was a spectacularly friendly guy. He even went so far as to agree with my critique of the deplorable design of my wallet. (the last time I buy one because it looks pretty, form follows function, y'know?) Attentive and efficient, no one in our group was without a drink or food for very long. The back room is the place to be for groups hanging out. We spent the evening playing free pool, listening to a bizarre mix of top-40 and classic rock, and wondering why anyone would watch poker on TV. It's nothing spectacular, definitely not flashy, but it's nice. No, you know what? Hawthorne Hideaway is great. But the old academic crowd just wouldn't buy it. The centuries of perfecting spatial composition and defining honest tectonic expression are a loss. Baffled at your explanation they would turn to a building completely unattainable by today's standards of design. Know the Grand Staircase of the Palais Garnier? Now there's a wonderful gathering space. Have you seen that? Do something like that, but you know, for Portland. "Yeah... Okay." You say as you hold back your tears. Your critique may only last an hour, but at least you know you've found a good spot to cry into your beer as you head back to the drawing board for the rest of the term.

Yelp
Best happy hour bar food in Portland. Admittedly, I'm no foodie. I typically prefer superior atmosphere and unique mixed drinks when I judge the quality of a bar. But the happy hour burger just knocked me out. To begin with, I had never even heard of, let alone tasted, a Falafel burger. But when I saw that as an option, I had to go for it. And what the heck, since it was only $2.50!!! And a side of tots was only another $1.50!!! And how did this exotic Falafel burger taste? Good enough that if they would have charged me $7 I would still be writing a 5 star review. The bar itself is located on a quieter stretch of Hawthorne, a little west of the main drag. The atmosphere is dark and divey and I understand that there are complimentary pool tables in the back. Bottom line, give their happy hour a shot. For $4, you can't go wrong.
google avatar

Yelp
The Hawthorne Hideaway makes me wish I looked like Courtney Love from the early 90's. It's just that kind of a place, you know? The lighting is low but not non-existent. There are pool tables that would be awesome if life were like a music video and you could randomly hop up and start making out with a greasy cyclist before racking up. The booths are roomy and slightly sticky. In fact, the booths look like the right setting to laugh unhingedly post-catfight with some random bar patron, while brandishing a cigarette and sitting on the tabletop as your drinking mates kind of gingerly chuckle along with you because they're all semi-aware you're kind of a crazy bitch. Except the Hawthorne Hideaway did away with smoking indoors the same time that all the bars had to enforce the rule. And I found out a while ago that I only identify with Courtney Love through her lyrics, and not so much her lifestyle. And the bar is still a fine place to drink inexpensive beverages before or after watching a movie at Cinemagic, snacking at the food carts on 12th, or whenever. But if the atmosphere gives you the urge to snort something off the toilet seat and pick fights with blond girls, just say no. In real life, crazy bitchery is not cute.

Yelp
I read a sour review of my local haunt and felt childishly compelled to defend the HH's honor. Is the place divey? yes. Is the bathroom situation a little confusing? only a little. are the salads a disgrace? certainly. consider the counter-argument addressed. let's move on: Good happy hour? big time. Free pool? 3 tables. Crowded? very rarely. Salads aside, how's the food? quick and very delicious. Oh so it's expensive then? my burger was $6. Pretentious crowd? not in my opinion. it's eclectic, the bar isn't under the rule of one adjective. i see more people reading comic books than wearing expensive pants and scarves in the summer. Good music? Almost always. Friendly Staff? I've had nothing but good experiences. They're laid back and enjoy laughing. You may have also noticed that the HH gets extra points from most people for being so close to home. I couldn't agree more. If there was a secret 6th star, I would have included it here * because of the bar's convenience. It's a neighborhood bar and is such inhabited by residents of said neighborhood. Speaking as someone who does live close by, I find this to be a cause of comfort, and not the other way around. Additionally, what you will NOT find in every direction are raving Gel Daddies and Woo-Grrl Britneys who rode their Jeeps in from the suburbs. For that joy, look south of Burnside on SW 2nd. The Hideaway is a quaint place that seems to maintain the aura of the neighborhood. I could see why people would complain about the HH if it's not what they were in the mood for. I mean shit, who doesn't love a big tossed salad every now and again? But when that's what I want, I go to a restaurant or a bus station. When I want to spend some quality time with my friends in a bar where I can actually hear them speak, play free pool, and spend less than $15 for food and booze, you'll find me sitting in one of the broken bench tables in the back corner.

Yelp
This place smells funny. I can't identify it, but the back smells differently funny than the front. The fries (in the cheese fries, at least) were on the uncomfortable median between standard and steak fries. The movie posters strike me as perfunctory. However, the bartender was friendly and efficient. I didn't eat (apart from a shared order of cheese fries) but I saw a mega burger (y'know, multiple meats and an egg) that looked and smelled amazing. Solid locals place. If you're near Hawthorne in the 20's, do stop in.

Yelp
I really like this little bar.....it's dimly lit and borderline seedy feeling. The low lighting makes everyone look a little better. The drinks are cheap and strong....always a winning combination. They also are the only bar close by that stays open late (last call at 2am). On top of that they also have a kicking happy hour with food and drink specials. The bartenders are friendly and super laid back. Great local bar.....will be back. No need to even wear makeup with that lighting.

Yelp
I had no problem with the bar, despite the overpriced drinks like every bar in this area. That was until a fight broke out in the bar last night, and the cops showed up while I was playing a game of pool. I went out front to check out what was going on and left my jacket on a chair next to the pool table. Long story short I forgot my jacket until after we left. I called them about 20 min later. Had to call about 4 times. They finally answered, and when I asked if the girl that answered could grab my jacket and hold onto it for me until the morning she said it was too busy and I'd have to either come back or see if it was still there in the morning. So a jacket I wore all the time, especially during this time of year when it's cold is now gone because this place did not treat me very kindly. It's not difficult to walk to the front of your bar and grab a jacket. After working numerous jobs I could never imagine treating a customer like that while on the clock. I called back today to see if it was still there, and because she didn't help me out it was gone. Not gonna give these people my money ever again I feel disrespected by the employees for not just treating me like a human being and helping a person out like you should if you're being paid to serve customers!Real shit.

Yelp
I was immediately nervous when I got inside the place. I was greeted by four bearded homeless looking men standing at the bar, no doubt taking turns asking each other for change, while a skinny, tattooed elderly woman sneered at new people coming into the joint. I ordered a drink and passed a dead floor fan as I went into the back for some free pool. An old drunken maniac was flopping pool balls around the table with the side of the pool cue as he continually remarked upon the freshness of the felt. "Nice day isn't it! Nice day isn't it!" he exclaimed while staring at me with a lazy eye. I nodded vigorously as I violently finished my vodka tonic and high-tailed it.

Yelp
I have been going to the Hideaway for years. It's a great dive bar! It looks small from the outside, but it goes back much more than you would think. They have two or three? pool tables, I can't remember now and I am pretty sure it's free to play. There are some pinball machines and there used to be some lottery machines, but they have added some swanky looking booths were those were. The bathrooms are quite divy, but never smelly. The bartenders have always been topnotch since my first time coming here about 6 or so years ago. It's right up the street for me, so I used to frequent it often. Not that much now though, as I seem to be always trying new places. The well drinks are always strong and they use fresh squeezed OJ for their screwdrivers. Cheap beers, too. There food is pretty good, hamburgers and sandwiches and their nachos are great and come in all different sizes. Very affordable prices, too.

Yelp
Classic dive bar. Nice, cool bartender (boy, do they love to card in this town. i never get all uppity or annoyed about being carded, i get that they're just trying to not get fired or fined, but after losing my wallet in New Orleans and NEVER once getting carded for the rest of the time i was there, i couldn't imagine if that had happened while on vacation in PDX). anyway, my official guide brought me here for Rootbeer vodka. We had had an earlier discussion about Whipped Cream vodka and it led to an epic idea involving vanilla schnapps and rootbeer and whipped cream vodka... i know, i know. that's a stomach ache for sure, but we had big ideas, man. so we stopped for a drink and it was basic, comfy dive bar stuff. booths for sitting in groups and/or eating, long bar right by the door for hanging out and chatting up the nice staff, and two rooms off to the side for playing pool or just being away from the action. clean-ish bathrooms, good music on the jukebox -- like i said, basic, comfy divey stuff. bonus points for the bartender offering a taste of two new vodkas we spotted, Absolut Boston and Absolut Brooklyn. limited edition stuff for trying out, so may never see it again, but we got a little taste. in conclusion: hooray hawthorne's!

Yelp
Being a newish patron and unfamiliar to the "time before video poker," I am fan of Hawthorne Hideaway. If you remain in the front section of the bar, it feels like a cozy lil neighborhood haunt. A local haunt that my belly has learned to call out by name. The hideaway is the perfect place to hide out during happy hour, and devour one of the best burgers in Portland. Easily one of my top 5. During happy hour one can get a huge juicy 1/2 lb burger for $3.95, and it comes with a plate full of crunchy kettle chips, which I recommend served under the bun. Top that off with a couple $2.50 happy hour drinks and you are good to go.. Go here for good burgers, cheap happy hour and a hang out up, i bet you enjoy it!

Yelp
First-- I will lament that my group did not show up until a little after 7pm, and happy Hour was over. I will have to come back to hit that up--some pretty awesome deals are to be had including some yummy sounding $1 house made soups. The prices were still pretty decent though outside of Happy hour, the hubs and I had 4 drinks and split a burger with tots for under 25 bucks. Not too shabby. Also, these drinks are mixed STRONG. All the better! They have pool tables and pinball in the back, and pool is free! I'm always down for entertainment that is pocketbook friendly. I'm feeling kinda bad I hadn't checked this place out before, but I know I will be back.

Yelp
Good beer selection, fresh squeezed juices, good music--albeit a little too loud--and what looked like a kickin' happy hour food menu. This place is super comfy, a little too smokey, and has a huge back room that had open tables on a Saturday night. Sweet. Will definitely be back for their happy hour snacks--chips and salsa are like crack to me, but crunchier--but think I may wait til the smoking ban goes into effect.

Yelp
Sorry, I don't get it. We came here based on the supposedly amazing burgers. Let's deal with that first. They aren't amazing. They aren't even really good. First off people there is a difference between a burger that is juicy, and a burger that is greasy. Grease does not = juice. Overcooked. Flavor of uncleaned grill. Advice: order it without the 3 lbs. of chopped iceburg lettuce they include. Not at all impressed. I can't really comment on the crowd, the night we were here it was pretty dead. So dead in fact that the whole "placing the order at the bar" thing seemed even more budget. Apparently the Hideaway isn't doing well enough to have a server on staff? Perhaps because it doesn't have anything about it that really stands out. Which brings me to the ambiance of the place. It's dark. Dark to the point where we were using our cellphones to illuminate the menus. It's also loud. It was really dead, yet it was still also really loud. Strange. I guess there is a pool table at the back of the place, perhaps with a sizable crowd contributing to the noise. So in conclusion if you want to sit in a dark noisy room and eat a bad burger this is your place. Oh and amongst the random art, a drawing of John Wayne Gacy in his clown makeup. John Wayne Gacy doesn't make your place more hipster. I am beginning to understand the formula for what constitutes a popular bar in Portland: make it dark, create some reason for the service to suck, and make PBR cheaper than soda.

Yelp
Reasons why I love this place 1. It is a block away from my house 2. 1/2 price well drinks from 4-7 3. a 4 dollar decent burger on happy hr with a mountain of tater tots for only 1 buck more 4. free pool Are those 4 reasons enough?

Yelp
After being disappointed that I couldn't get a Blood Mary at Jam I was determined to get something in my system on Portland's hip Hawthorne strip. The Hawthorne Hideaway was just the place. Some might call this a dive bar but not me. Chad suggested a few local beers and they did not disappoint. Jam is great and so is the Hawthorne Hideaway. PS-the Simpson's pinball machine is worth the trip alone.

Yelp
This is a five star bar for the following reasons: - You can chill out here, engage the bartender if you want, or just happily sit and sip without being disturbed. Free wifi too! - It's dark, but it's safe. The bartenders treat you like a friend right away, so they'll be looking out for you too. - The burger (with blue cheese) was really good. Is it the most amazing burger I've ever had? Maybe not - but it's up there. - They pour strong drinks. - You feel like a regular after 5 minutes.

Yelp
I've got east coast in my blood so I like things short and to the point. That's exactly how this review is going to be. I met up for drinks with someone. The place had about 8 local beers on tap that I recall. The bartender was friendly and made suggestions on his favorites. It was early on a Friday and there weren't a whole lot of people there so we grabbed a booth to ourselves for chatting. It was a decent place, nothing too fancy, and I like that. I'd probably go back again.

Yelp
Little gem on Hawthorne! This is a great place to go grab some lunch! They have a few booths in the front and a large room with pool, pinball, and other games. The food we ordered came without a long wait. The food was also not too expensive. As far as taste, it was delicious!!! The portions were big and the sauce on my burger was awesome! Fries were also good! The bartender working when we came in was very friendly. He was pretty awesome! I will definitely be returning when I get the chance!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite dive bar spots. The manager, Chad, there has been there FOREVER and he is a great guy! The bartenders are also very friendly and quick! You can even get jello shots there, woo hoo return back to your college days. The food is surprisingly good, since it is a dive bar and the drinks are strong. Also pool is always free!!! Let the good times roll!

Yelp
Super awesome and extremely friendly bartender, and dirt cheap bar food: 2 tacos on Wednesdays for $1.50, and they're really good tacos! Great place within walking distance to my house, I'll definitely be back here again.

Yelp
Great staff, especially Emmy! I had a chili dog and fries, which were delivered very promptly and piping hot. I saw a couple bands play, and the energy was great. First time here, and overall a really enjoyable experience.
