Yelp
I found out a good while that this location of Hay Hay closed and I was a bit surprised but then again, I wasn't sure how much business they were getting. This restaurant was I would say a bit too far away from St. Marks and the rest of the Chinese spots and probably would have fared off way better on St. Marks or something (but then again that likely would have cost a lot more also so whatever.) in terms of their other location if you planning on reading the old reviews here, I heavily prefer some of the other Cantonese BBQ/siu mei spots as I honestly find their Mott Street location overpriced and for some reason or another, this location actually had better deals. The other spot was also always sold out of their pipa/guitar duck and unfortunately I was never able to try it here while they were open. Staff here was pretty friendly as well and I hope they do well in other restaurants.
I stopped here twice before they closed. The first time I had one of their excellent dinner specials which came with a small plate, a drink, and your choice of meat either over rice or with noodles and if they were still open, I would have heavily recommended said meat over rice. The small plate at that time was the Liangban Spicy Trotters which had some chili, a good little hit of cumin, and a chewy satisfying texture to the chopped up pork foot. The special also came with a drink and they had a very tasty milk tea being better than the usual place as it tasted more like tea than milk and was barely sweetened. The main dish was the char siu unfortunately ordered with noodles. I think I forgot that the noodles were in a tonkotsu broth which really didn't work that well. The pork was good of course and the veggies in there were fine but this place had no reason to even think of attempting said Japanese ramen broth as it was both bland and also a bit fatty and honestly just wasn't tasty outside of the excellent egg.
The second time I was in a group and we shared a bunch of dishes. The best of the evening by a mile was actually not one of the BBQ meats but rather the Dan Dan Spicy Brisket/秘制香辣牛腩面 or dan dan noodles with spicy beef brisket, scallions, & seasoned vegetables. The noodles were nice and bouncy and the brisket was tender with excellent mala flavor and the veggies mostly consisted of a few pieces of bok choy which was expected as this is the usual non-sour veggie found in most dishes. The portion size was great for sharing and I would have recommended it.
Two of our other bigger dishes were two of the rice dishes. The Pork Knuckles/豬腳饭 or slow cooked pork knuckles, sauerkraut, egg, and vegetables with white rice was tasty. Nicely cooked down pork which paired nicely with the pickled veggies (mustard greens) with the cooked down egg being very nice and runny almost reminding me more of a ramen egg as per before. The other vegetable was of course bok choy again. Alright was the Hay Hay Deluxe Trio or char siu, over-easy egg, and seasoned vegetables with white rice. I've had this dish from the other location and again the pork is perfectly okay but there's much better places for Chinese style roasted pork with the egg being fried a bit too much. We asked for some ginger scallion sauce as the dish was overall just a bit too dry which helped. We otherwise got the Roasted Duck/烧鸭 which was alright. A bit too bony and not as fatty as some of the better ducks such as Dai/Big Wong downtown.
Our smaller plates were the Hay Hay Spicy Wontons/喜喜香辣云吞 which comes with five pieces and the Hay Hay Spicy Curry Fish Balls/喜喜乾咖哩炸魚蛋 which were both pretty standard. The wontons were the better of the bunch and were a pretty good version though they could have been a bit spicier but there was good umami. The fish balls were bouncy and alright with a decent curry. In terms of other smaller plates, the staff gave us some Fried Buns/Mantou With Condensed Milk at the end which was thoughtful and a nice way to end the second meal.
The food here was pretty good. Honestly, the best thing about this place was not the roasted meats which maybe is what doomed this location but then again I don't think the siu mei is that particularly good at either location. The value was outstanding and it was certainly better than the other Cantonese spots in the area but that wasn't saying much. Mid 3
