Coffee Truck Petite Rouge Gets a Permanent Uptown Cafe - Eater New Orleans

Haydel’s Bakery Expands to Magazine Street - Eater New Orleans

"Haydel’s Bakery, named one of Eater NOLA’s Essential Bakeries, is expanding to Magazine Street in early September. Ryan Haydel, a third-gen Haydel baker, is opening the satellite shop in the former Fleurty Girl spot across from Rum House, Todd Price reported. The petite Haydel’s Bake Shop won’t actually bake anything onsite though. Instead, it’ll source everything (petit fours, 6-inch cakes, and other popular items) from the original Jeff Highway location. The original Haydel’s was born in 1959 when Lloyd Haydel took over the Sunny Flake Bakery— because he wanted to turn it into a trampoline center. It didn’t work, so Lloyd Haydel reverted to what did work, namely doughnuts. Since then, the bakery has expanded into cakes, pastries, Hubig’s-like hand pies, king cakes, and king cake stunts. Other than holding the title to world’s largest king cake, the bakery bangs out 60,000 of those gems every Carnival season." - Stephanie Carter

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm, attentive service that sets the tone for a great experience. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting—perfect for a relaxed treat or a catch-up with friends. The pastries were absolutely delightful. The crème brûlée was heavenly—perfectly caramelized on top with a silky-smooth custard underneath. I also tried a small slice of the velvet cake, and it was just as impressive—rich, moist, and full of flavor. A lovely spot that delivers on both taste and vibe. Highly recommended!

The lady was so kind and nice. She helped me pick out the things I wanted and we talked about the German chocolate cake. The cake was delicious as well as the lemon cookie 10/10 🤤

Google
The best service, the woman helping me out was so friendly and gave some recommendations on what flavors to get. I ended up getting the caramel doberge cake and a slice of king cake. Doberge cake: The cake itself tasted really good and was super moist. The custard didn't really taste like much though, but it had a nice creamy texture. The caramel icing tasted really really good, but it was waaaaay too sweet. If it had 1/4 of the sugar, it would've been more enjoyable. King cake: It was basically just a stale cinnamon roll with way too much frosting on top. I wouldn't recommend it. Everything was just so overly sweet, and the things I got weren't super memorable. I don't think I'd try anything else from here.

Just one of those places where you feel comfortable as soon as you walk in. Greeting; you as soon as you walk through the door. Sweets are as good as they look. And prices are very affordable. A must see. When in New Orleans period!

Nothing beats walking around Nola (we did about 8 miles this day!) and hitting up all the good eating and drinking spots! Well, if you’re on Magazine Street near the Irish Channel area this is a must stop!! Every delicious bake item you could ever want. We focused on the Doberge cake slices (and they have entire little cakes as well); the Gooey cakes (can’t beat the traditional Almond gooey); and a couple cookies (original chocolate chip and also the toffee). Every item was SO delicious. And the service and friendly, lovely lady behind the counter was so nice. We enjoyed talking with her and getting her recommendations. Thank you!!! Hope you will enjoy like we did. And PS… we have learned that they ship and deliver. Yikes. We will be ordering soon.

Google
Ordered a cream cheese king cake to be delivered to Dallas, TX this year and it was a hit! I appreciate that you can schedule delivery beforehand. Delivery was delayed a day due to weather and it was still fresh and ready to serve upon arrival. Will definitely order again!

Google
Cute little shop! We picked up one each of their Gooey Almond cake squares, Gooey Praline cake squares, and a Cookies and cream Gooey cake square. All wonderfully delicious! 😋

Google
We tried a turtle and the chocolate doberge cake, both were really yummy! Shauna was working when we went in and she is super helpful, kind and fun! She helped explain not only the yummy pastries in the shop but also helped welcome us to New Orleans! 100% recommend checking this spot out!! They even had themed pastries when we visited! So cute!

Yelp
The best king cake I've ever had!!!! The king cake was recommended by many locals. You must try this spot! I had the cream cheese king cake. It was PERFECT!! You will not be disappointed!! The bake shop was adorable inside with many options. I was pleasantly surprised with the great service we had! You will not be disappointed to try this cute gem!

Yelp
We were walking back to the car from our lunch at Miss Shirley's and our sweet tooth got the best of us. They had a good selection of sweets and a great coffee bar. Great pop in place to fix your sweet tooth.

Yelp
Cute local bakery with friendly employees, reasonable prices. Their pastries are just delicious! Parking in front is paid, so be aware of that.

Victoria W.

Yelp
I went yesterday and ordered multiple items. I was rung up and paid while my items were being boxed up across the shop. I spent right at $70 after the total and tip. When I got home, I opened the tape on the box to discover that one of my items was never given to me. I reached out to the shop on Facebook because they don't have a regular website but received a period "." as the response. I sent another message asking if there was a regular website to use to contact someone about the issue but never received a response. I would have probably just eaten the money and let it go if it wasn't for the responses (or lack thereof) that I had received when reaching out. I run a business so I know that they easily could look back at the transactions and see what was rung up vs what can be seen being boxed up on camera. I just don't think that refusing to respond to customers is good service.

Yelp
THE place to get King Cake. We got the traditional. They had other baked goods that looked so good! Service was great. The owner had a great sense of humor when she gave my daughter a hard time for grabbing a fork and knife for her king cake. Ambience was delightful. Great bake shop.

Yelp
This bakery is so yummy. We are tourists and wanted to visit the non tourist spots. Glad we did. The almond gooey, fruit tart, and danish are to die for. Wish I had brought some home with us. My mom said the coffee is the best she's ever had.

Yelp
I was craving a sweet dessert after my lobster roll so I stopped by Haydel's. I picked out the glazed cinnamon raisin bun, toffee cookie, and the king cake gooey bar. The desserts were amazing but the service was the bragging point here! Shawna was so sweet and asked me about my day and plans and we had a wonderful conversation! Wonderful woman made the experience so much sweeter! I very much enjoyed the bakery items and believe they're fairly priced which is a huge deal to me. I have tried Sucre more times than I should have and everytime they were double the price for what you got and they were nothing special to me. I have eaten at all the best bakeries in Paris but all I expect is you to put effort into your desserts and charge a fair price. Haydel's does just that and I felt much more at home in there, like your Grandmom's kitchen. It is the opposite of corporate feel. I look forward to going back!

Yelp
This review is only for the Strawberry Cream Cheese King Cake. I convinced my friend and his wife to join me on New Orleans trip at the end of January through the second week of February. They had never considered coming in Winter until I described Mardi Gras parade season so he ended up bringing his 2 sons and daughter-in-law. I wanted to share as much of parade season experiences with them as possible so it wasn't just catching so many beads they all looked like they each had a Mr. T starter kit Part of the parade season experience included King Cake so on a day of walking almost 4 miles total around NOLA, we were on Magazine Street for a great deal of afternoon window shopping and I came across Haydel's; I remembered that it was one of the better King Cake bakeries that friends of friends had for a King Cake tasting party a few years ago (pre-Pandemic when we didn't worry about group gatherings). I went in and got one of the last King Cakes they had that day. I bought the last Strawberry Cream Cheese they had and the six of us thoroughly enjoyed it for breakfast the next day, and finished it as an afternoon snack. The King Cake flavor worked well as it wasn't overly sweet, and was a great accompaniment for both coffee and milk. I would buy Haydel's King Cake again on future trips even if I have to eat it all myself (and that could get ugly).

Yelp
Super friendly staff and tasty pastries. Loved the Russian Petite Four. So good. Also quick service

Yelp
We came here first thing in the morning when they opened. I assumed that would be the best time to arrive to get the best picks, but that was clearly not the case as there was not much to choose from, and I guess leftovers from the previous day since there were a lot of items where there was only one left or empty trays full of crumbs. What we got: King cake slice King cake ooey gooey bar Both items were fantastic. Just knocking off a star for service (never welcomed in or talked to) and the fact that things looked messy/disorganized/picked apart for a bakery first thing in the morning.
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
The bakery items are delicious! There is a reason that people rave about the king cakes. We also ordered an almond filled pastry and some turtles. All quite delectable. The staff on the other hand, were not very welcoming. I understand that a lot of customers come in every day, and may not know what they're ordering, but this is not a reason to be rude. I was in a party of four and two of us ordered baked goods. For whatever reason everything was rang up together, and the cashier gave us quite a bit of attitude when we clarified we were separate. In the end, it was easier for me to pay my friend for my king cake. Again the baked goods are very good. I was in the neighborhood a few days later and thought of picking up a second king cake (I got the baby in the first one) however the cashier was the same so I passed on by! I picked one up closer to my destination.

Yelp
I enjoyed my visit to Haydel's, which had wonderful cold brew and a delightful staff who were quick to recommend top sellers, tell us the history of the company, and ask us our favorite parts of New Orleans. We sampled 5-6 different items and by far my favorite was the petit fours. Every flavor we had was phenomenal, from the seasonal pumpkin to the classic white cake. I ordered a mini lemon meringue tart/pie but found it to be a bit too sweet. There are a few outdoor tables on the sidewalk if you'd like to people watch while enjoying your treats!
google avatar

Cat H.

Yelp
We popped into this cute bakery while walking down Magazine Street. This bakery is pretty famous for its king cake. We ended up getting some almond petit fours which were absolutely delicious. They have lots of items to choose from and service was very friendly. One nice thing about their shop is that they will give you a free cup of coffee if you pick up a bucket of trash from the street. They have little pails by the door that you can take and fill up. It made me smile.
google avatar

Jazmyne C.

Yelp
Very good service! Took time to help us choose desserts and explained what they were. Delicious eclair filled with chocolate crème and the red velvet squares are delicious!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
I swung in to this place while visiting Magazine St. because I remember hearing a lot of things about it. We were actually grabbing a drink across the street and I knew I had some time before closing so I waited until our drinks arrived to keep my companion occupied while I jumped across the street to snag some goodies for later. I was delighted to see they were selling King Cake slices!!!! Unfortunately, just my luck, I was informed that someone had JUST purchased the last slice. I settled on the king cake gooey, a cookies n cream gooey, and a "cajunnoli". We actually didn't eat them until a day or two later and they were all really delicious pastries. For some reason, I was expecting some spice from the cajunnoli which was absent but it was still a more flavorful cannoli than what I typically find. The king cake gooey was my favorite and I could eat that shit every day.

J J.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood spot, easy to find and get to. Sesame bagel was really good, an apricot granola type bar was pretty good. Staff was friendly, eclectic group of customers! Would go back without question.

Joseph P.

Yelp
Have loved Haydel's since I was a little kid. This location was a welcome surprise to see on magazine. We went on a week day at mid day. Only a few customers were present. Staff was very helpful with questions by my significant other. Goods were fresh and tasted amazing. Will definitely be back
google avatar

christine c.

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim looking for pralines. Service was meh but their sweets gladly made up for it! The cajunoli (i was suckered by the name) was filled with a praline flavored cream cheese. The praline gooey was soft and delectable with the right amount of sweetness. The texture was similar to a fudgy brownie but a tad less dense.
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Very good king's cake! Haydel's was recommended to me by the staff at Alice and Amelia's shop on Magazine. Cake was flavorful, moist, and the frosting was delicious. I ate the whole thing!!! I would definitely buy a big one to take home if I'm could.
google avatar

Jenny O.

Yelp
I love Haydel's king cake and their bakery in Jefferson. I was excited when I saw this location on Magazine, but was left a little disappointed. This location was heavy on the pretty, instagramable offerings. Lots of beautiful dessert squares with colorful sprinkles and icing, but nothing I wanted to eat for a light breakfast. I'd come here for a dessert after dining at another Magazine Street restaurant or bring my nieces here to load them full of sugar before returning them to their parents. Definitely a dessert only place for me.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
SCRUMDIDILYUMTIOUS !! These pastries were yummy, oh man they were gooood! I live a couple miles from this bakery and had never heard of this spot before (somehow), well NO MORE! This is such a cute bake shop with a large selection and fresh bites that I can't wait to tell my friends about. In all honesty, I had no idea what a "petit four" was when a friend bought some for us, but oh man they were delicious! Tastes like a sweet mini wedding cake! This cute French shop will be a new go-to to satisfy that sweet tooth craving!
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Received these cakes as a gift. They were moist and not too sweet. Nice way to have something sweet without having to have an entire cake.
google avatar

Buzz F.

Yelp
Do you want a Christmas kringle? How a mofo Mardi Gras cake? This is the best there is

Lola L.

Yelp
Spoke with Tina at the Magazine Street store and she was very helpful and patient. Great customers Service.
google avatar

Kristin H.

Yelp
I'd like to start off by saying that I have a pretty high standard for French pastries. I lived in France for quite a while, and became accustomed to the mastery that French have over pastry making. That being said, Haydel's knocks it out of the park with their Macarons! The cookies are crisp yet delicate, and positively melt in your mouth. I tried the salted caramel, chocolate, raspberry, and café Macarons, and I can say for a fact that I will be coming back to indulge in the salted caramel and raspberry macarons again! Absolutely delicious! I highly recommend grabbing a coffee from French truck coffee just on the street, picking up some macaroons and pastries from Haydel's, and sitting outside to enjoy the lovely weather and gorgeous street! Nothing completes and experience quite like a bustling ambience!
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
Don't come here unless you want to be tempted to buy all of the sweets in sight! I love a good bakery and this one came highly recommended by a few local friends, and for good reason. Given that it is Mardi Gras season, I came on the hunt for authentic King Cake and took home a huge slice, covered in colorful, decadent sugar and icing. The King Cake was delicious - a great thing to pair with coffee to kick of an otherwise dull Monday! As for other goodies, I also tried their King Cake Gooey Bar, Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar, Petit Four, and Turtle Cookie. The real standouts here are the Petit Four and the Turtle Cookie. The Petit Four is a perfectly small piece of white almond cake goodness, moist and simply sweet. The Turtle Cookie is not the candy you may be thinking of, but instead is a buttery shortbread cookie topped with 3 pecan halves and a big ol' dollop of chocolate icing. Given that this bakery has been around for some time, you really can't go wrong with whatever satisfies your sweet tooth!
google avatar

SANDRA C.

Yelp
Bought the small king cake & pecan pie to try. Both were very delicious. There is no baby on the small king cake. Will definately be back for more next time we are in town.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Nice bakery in the Garden District. The items we ordered were fresh and good. The two staff members we interacted with seemed a bit disorganized or disengaged. We purchased mini chocolate eclairs and a small king cake. All were very good. It would have been nice as tourists if the small king cake had included the baby and prizes but not a big deal.

Elena Y.

Yelp
The pastries are way too sweet and can be dry too. Small shop so do not expect to sit inside, and there is limited outdoor seating. There also doesn't seem to many people working there, so service can be slow.
google avatar

Don T.

Yelp
This is a name that has long been a staple of the New Orleans scene. We visited the location on Magazine St. The service was great but the options were limited. We grabbed an almond croissant and a chocolate cream pastry. The prices were a little high, but that was okay.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
I needed a king cake, stat! So I ran by this new outpost of Haydel's Bakery on a Saturday evening. They had beaucoup king cakes and so many other adorable items, plus coffee, hot chocolate, what not. It's a small shop but with it's gleaming surfaces and white color scheme it's very inviting. I like that there was a clear way to queue up to order your pastries/bevs/whatever. Service was quick and my black & gold robbed cookie was delicious, as was the king cake!
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
This smaller offshoot of the main Haydel's on Jeff Hwy. isn't quite up to the amazing status of the original but it does have some of the famous Haydel's great offerings in King Cakes, Kringle Cakes, Russian Cakes, Doberge Cakes, cheese cakes, cookies and a more limited selection of some of the other offerings the original has. They also offer their treats in different sizes than the original location so you can't get the smaller snack size squares but larger cuts instead here so it is less practical to get a sampler box of multiple items. This is still a fantastic NOLA place to visit if you're in the mood for sweets and need to get your dessert fix satisfied and you don't have time to drive out to the original location.
google avatar

Meagan J.

Yelp
Ehhhh, I'm not sure how I feel about Haydel's. I've had their cakes, king cakes, and eclairs and they never truly hit the spot for me. Today, I ordered the pineapple/ strawberry wedding cake slice and the cake itself was really dry! The flavor was good but the was just dry. I expected more for the price i paid! I ordered two slices and it came up to $12..... VERY EXPENSIVE for a slice of cake. The service was great! The enforced the rule of wearing a mask and they greeted you at the door. The bakery is cute but very tiny on Magazine St.
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
There's a new sweet shop on Magazine and this could get dangerous. I had been pretty much stalking the opening of this place since I heard it was happening. I love Haydel's pastries, but I never get out to Jefferson to have any. In fact, I think I have really only had them at events. Being able to pop in and get some yummies to go was an exciting prospect. I stopped in today and the shop is adorable. They have some good treats such as full cakes, cake bars, petit fours, croissants, muffins, eclairs and a few other sweet indulgences. They also serve French Market coffee, so you can get some caffeine to really make all of the sugar pop. I got a blueberry muffin and a petit four. Both were obviously super fresh and delicious and I liked that the muffin was packed with blueberries. My iced coffee was tasty as well and paired perfectly with the pastries. The staff was gracious and helped me decide exactly what I was in the mood for. The shop itself is small and there's no seating, so it's one of those "grab and go" type of places. I'm sure that they will start getting a nice little crowd as soon as word gets out and especially during the madness of carnival season. I'm excited to go back soon and try some more goodies.
google avatar

Alvin D.

Yelp
sugarrrr! Just opened (today) and stopped by. The design is inviting and really well done, some drinks but clearly your attention is drawn to the display cases where the real action is happening. the staff were really friendly as I asked about all the different goodies. i settled on a cake slice and a couple small bites for after dinner later. it's dangerously close to home, so I'm sure I'll be back!
google avatar

Sirius B.

Yelp
Haydel's is amazing, this location is not. Customer service here is atrocious. There is no point in ordering ahead and paying ahead. The single line, which has "been the way we do things for 50 years", is pointless. I understand these times are tough and there are restrictions but a simple polite response would have been much appreciated. If you're looking for good king cake I'd recommend Dong Phuong or Adrian's. They are always happy to have you as a customer and won't remind you how long they've been in business.
google avatar

Hal S.

Yelp
The gal that helped me today was SO sweet and kind. I was so impressed by her sweet demeanor and positive attitude! Love a good customer service moment.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I popped in here as we were strolling down Magazine St. I was thirsty and needed something to drink. It's a cute little spot with lots of yummy looking desserts to indulge in. I ended up ordering a frozen lemonade, bottle of water and a brownie cheesecake to eat later. My frozen lemonade was a little on the sweet side but I still drank/ ate most of it. I put my brownie cheesecake in the fridge and ate it for breakfast the next morning and it was the best! Perfectly creamy and just enough chocolate from the brownie. It was right up my alley! If I ever happen to be here again it'll be hard to not get it again and again. I do however want to try some more of their sweet treats! I dare you to stop in here and try to resist the goodness!
google avatar

Bernard J.

Yelp
Bought a King cake online. Ate it. Delicious.
google avatar

Amita R.

Yelp
I woke up early this morning craving King Cake so I made an early morning trip to Haydel's!! The King Cake was amazing!! Fresh and moist, with the perfect amount of cinnamon and flavor. The bakery is really cute with French Market coffee and all kinds of delicious, enticing pastries-it was hard not to buy them but I was sooo happy with my King Cake!
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Right in the heart of magazine, I walked right in and got straight to sweet sweet business! You can smell the chicory and pastries soon as you walk In the door! New Orleans delights that satisfied my sweet tooth included a lovely slice of chocolate doberge and boy those layers of cake and chocolate custard was so smooth along with a nice cafe au lait the stop in was well worth it!
google avatar

Miriam W.

Yelp
Oh danger, danger. In the past, I could avoid going to Haydel's, as I don't live close to the Jefferson Highway location. But now they've come to me, and I will be eternally grateful/adding minutes to my workouts. The coffee here is very good, and if you're intrepid enough to pick up some trash along Magazine St. (something I do anyway) your cup o' joe is on the house. I like the thought and community spirit behind that. I'm a sucker for those pastries that are "just a bite", and they have many to choose from. Yes, you can buy a whole pie or king cake, but I'm guessing those little treats just fly right out of the case. My first visit here was on Thanksgiving, when I was desperately hunting down my morning coffee and most places were closed. The light was on at Haydel's, where smart people were collecting their pies. The staff here is friendly and helpful, and I will most definitely be back.

Andrea R.

Yelp
I love that they sell king cake by the slice, even though it's quite a big slice. I've made several trips just for their cake with the strawberry pineapple filling. Delicious!
google avatar

Carol A.

Yelp
Got a small hot chocolate and large eclair. The eclair had chocolate pudding inside which I wasn't expecting( I was expecting a usual eclair ) and it was soggy. It cost 8$ for that and a small hot chocolate. Pretty disappointing. They also should add prices for the pastries.
google avatar

Charlene K.

Yelp
More than disappointed to find my $20 worth of turtles smashed into this small box. I will not return to this location.
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
When you need a great cream cheese King Cake, this is your place. In a great location with a good choice of delicious cakes and drinks and a nifty idea of giving away a free coffee for a bucket of trash collected. We grabbed a king cake and a coffee and sat outside on Magazine street soaking it up. The cake was delicious and a firm favourite. Check them out for yourself.
google avatar

Oreoluwa O.

Yelp
I got the fruit tart, it was really good, dont think you can really mess up a fruit tart. They have king cakes all year round, i was excited to get some for my coworkers
google avatar

Walter S.

Yelp
Was not impressed with this bakery. The service was mediocre at best, and the pastries tasted like they were manufactured in large quantities. The Key lime tart had a good flavor in the lime custard, but the 'meringue' topping was more like whipped non-dairy cream. The almond croissant had a thick pastry cream that Nga's no almond flavor whatsoever. The mini eclair was very good, and had a rich chocolate mousse filling. Overall not the best bakery I have been to in New Orleans Area.
google avatar

Margo R.

Yelp
Called from california to New Orleans to order cake for my son's birthday. On the website there was a birthday cake with strawberries on top. I wanted the strawberries on top for my son. My son got a plain white birthday cake it said happy birthday Jacob and strawberries inside. Playing on the outside almost no decoration just a white cake it was his birthday I would've paid $100 more for a nice pretty strawberry cake. I'll try another shop next time
