The Best Restaurants in Sonoma County | Eater SF

"The 800-degree wood-fired oven at the heart of Jim and Michele Wimborough’s Occidental restaurant hogs the credit for the house-made sourdough with peppery olive oil and spicy sausage and egg pizzas with blistered crusts. But bold flavors across the menu mean lettuces splashed with Banyuls vinaigrette and a red quinoa entree smacked with salsa verde. On days when the small dining room gets cozy, the slim patio offers sunny respite." - Christina Mueller

Hazel in Occidental is the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after the meal is over. We had dinner on their cozy outdoor patio, which was the perfect setting for a relaxed evening with our golden retriever (who was treated like a VIP, complete with a special treat from the owner!). From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome, friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the menu. With so many tempting options, their thoughtful recommendations helped guide us toward an incredible meal. We started with fresh sourdough and local olive oil (simple perfection), then shared the mushroom pizza and comforting roasted chicken with potatoes, each bite full of flavor and clearly crafted with care. The standout finale was the cheesecake pie topped with local sour cherries, tangy, creamy, and unforgettable. This is the kind of restaurant that reminds you why dining out can be such a joy: high-quality ingredients, heartfelt hospitality, and a setting that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something truly special. Hazel is absolutely worth the detour.

If you are a foodie, this restaurant is a must. It is a cozy spot with warm welcoming owners. We shared the heirloom tomato salad and the Blue cheese pizza, both were fantastic. We usually don't order dessert but, we were tempted by the apple and blackberry cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream. It has been 2 days and I am still thinking about this meal.

Really enjoyed our dinner at Hazel. We were promptly greeted and seated. Ribeye and blue cheese mushroom pizza were great, save room for the peach cobbler.

We ate here for dinner while in the area after we went on a tour at the Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund. We didn't have a reservation so we ate at the bar. This place is very popular so I would recommend making reservations in advance, especially if you are going on the weekend. It has a warm and inviting ambiance and the staff are really friendly. The food was delicious. I had the Little Gem salad and a slice of my husband's pizza. Both were delicious. They have a lot of options appetizers, pizzas, and main dishes. They have options for their pizzas like a gluten free crust and vegan cheese. I also love that this is a family owned restaurant since I much prefer these types of restaurants over corporately owned ones. Highly recommend!

Went here for dinner and got in right before a rush -- this place is small but bursting with flavor. Ordered two different pizzas (mushroom + caramelized onion with blue cheese) and brussel sprouts for apps. Everything was delicious. Would definitely go back again next time I visit Bodega Bay area. Also several options for vegans.

Ok, another state and another city! I really love the life I have lived. I'm on a flight to Seattle now from Charles Schult airport Santa Rosa California. Had dinner last night at Hazel's. The menu is small. But the quality of food and service is 5 stare. The portions are healthy. So my companion and I shared. Check the pictures. it's worth 1000 words. Definitely worth a road trip. And then on to Bodega Beach ⛱️ 😎

I was staying at the Royal Pacific Bodega Bay and we decided to visit Hazel's for dinner I've been here twice now this place is fabulous. wood fire oven Pizzas are delicious. Chicken dish Yes to die for. Fish stew Super flavourful. Pot de creme desert yummy. We had a very fun and attentive Waitress. My 3rd visit was not as good The pizza was watery in the middle The dough never rose in the middle It was soggy, They made it twice the same way. It was a Sunday And they way overbook With not enough Waitress All the tables were shoved close it Was extremely loud and not a relaxing dinner. I think the owner was trying to squeeze Every dime out of the night. If this was my first impression of this restaurant I would never go back. Several workers behind the counter were just standing around while the waitresses were running at full speed. I hope the owner reads this and makes some Changes definitely needs to work on his dough for the pizza. It is not cooked properly in the center 3rd time I've had it this way. Drop it on a hot pizza pan with some oil if you have to.

Yelp
Delicious food in a lovely comfortable setting. Service by one of the owners was superb- very attentive by her and all her support staff. Started with the arugula salad which the chef kindly made with cheese on the side for one of our guests. Moved to the mushroom pizza- very deeply mushroomy as promised - cheesy and delicious. Then, an order of the crispy Brussels - a bit too much bacon for our taste but tasty . Finished with the lamb shank, served with polenta and bok choy in a bowl, stew style . The flavors were delicious and the meat was very tender and well seasoned. The wine list is simple but mostly local and satisfactory. We were too full for dessert but I'm sure we will be back to this charming little spot.

Yelp
Wonderful food in a beautiful setting. Our extended family of seven had a great dinner. We started with the crispy Brussels sprouts. My main was the pot roast. We finished with dessert. Everything was yummy.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here was barely palatable. We got a salad and a mushroom pizza to share..maybe we ordered wrong? The salad was drenched in overly acidic dressing and the pizza had really overpowering mushroom flavor, covered in like a mushroom sauce with mushrooms and blobs of cheese on gross crust. If we hadn't paid $26+ for it, we wouldn't have eaten it. 2 stars because the service was decent and a nice ambiance.

Yelp
It's restaurant week in Sonoma County this week and if I'm being honest I didn't see a lot of interesting menus. There were a few exceptions and one was Hazel which we have been to many times before. For $40.00 you received a very tasty little gem Caesar salad, choice of entree and choice of some tasty desserts. Plus, since it was a Thursday evening, free corkage on any Sonoma County wine! Started with that Little Gem salad, very nice and perfectly dressed. For entrees we split and shared two different ones. One was the Pork Schnitzel, a huge crispy Schnitzel over smashed potatoes and red cabbage. DELICIOUS! Other entree was also fantastic, braised Pot Roast over smashed potatoes and caramelized onions. Yum! For dessert DW had the Pot du Cream, a cup of chocolate goodness. I had the Brownie Sundae, deep chocolate brownie, smothered with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream with a cherry on top. All in all a great value and a nice way to order and share. Had a very nice Idlewild Red Wine to go with the meal. Service as always was friendly and helpful Restaurant week will be over soon but no problem, just get out to Hazel and enjoy some wonderful food and service

Yelp
With larger parties, I've found it's difficult to score a table at this restaurant and for good reason. Hazel is a quaint restaurant in Occidental that has amazing service, food, and vibes. We have never had a single bad thing to say about this place or the food. Our favorites include the ribs and their chicken. Everything tastes incredibly fresh and as if it was made with the utmost care and love. It's a little tight at times when we're dining as a whole family with a wheelchair, but it's definitely worth it when coming here.
google avatar

Yelp
everything was chef's kiss. great food and wine, ambiance, and service. The Caesar and lemon meringue were my favorite.
google avatar

Natasha K.

Yelp
Wow first time at Hazel last night and the Chef and staff did not disappoint. Excellent service and cozy intimate vibes with still the ambiance of chatter of guests and clanks from the kitchen. We ordered the vegan Caesar. Those croutons are heavenly! Toasted to perfection, super buttery and disintegrates in your mouth. To share we went with the pot roast. Duh! Huge portion of food, delicious flavors. The meat was very tender fall off the bone meat on a bed of yummy sustainable potatoes. I loved the potato skin! Gravy in that dish is giving Fall in West County with a hint of fog. The drive into this deep small town is worth it. This windy road will definitely lead you to some outstanding Cal-Mediterranean food!

Yelp
First: If you love mushrooms, you MUST get their mushroom pizza. It's absolutely covered with a variety of fresh wild mushrooms, accented with a light drizzling of truffle oil. Second: if you are bemoaning the small portions / high price points of quality restaurants... Hazel will blow your mind. Huge portions (two adults could easily be full by splitting one app and one main). And somehow still quality ingredients! How do they do it? Finally: friendly and attentive service and an adorable atmosphere.

Mary R.

Yelp
Lovely place. The server was gracious and nice. The pot roast was flavorful, tender, and good-sized. We also got the mushroom pizza as recommended by our lodging and this did not fail to impress. We had a very nice and laidback dinner at Hazel.
google avatar

Cynthia D.

Yelp
Waitress was actually really nice and warned us about the food being overpriced and flavorless, which I have to agree with. They have a quinoia bowl on the menu for 30 dollars which is highway robery. The pizzas are burned around the edges and overcooked. The toppings don't go together well and the mushroom pizza specifically was absolutely disgusting and gave me an upset stomach for hours. It is very smokey inside the building because of their wood fired oven, and outside it is cold, windy, with the occasional burst of smoke billowing fromt he smokestack. The menu is very pricey, and we will not be back. I had high hopes for this place, but I do not recommend it. Bland food, poorly put together combinations, way overpriced, and nothing special at all.

Yelp
What a find! The food, from the warm bread to dessert, was delicious. The toppings on the pizzas were generous, the little gem salad- cool and crisp. Not cheap, but worth the drive. If you're into Farm to Table, check it out.

Yelp
It was the perfect place to enjoy a cozy dinner on a cold evening. I wasn't sure what to expect and this place was a pleasant surprise. The caramelized onions and Marcona almond pizza was delicious and the pot roast was the warm hug my stomach needed. The short ribs we ordered were fall off the bone tender and had the slightest kick of spice to balance out the sweetness. Our very attentive server let us know the place has a husband and wife team and while the husband tackled entrees, his wife served perfect desserts. I loved my chocolate pot de crème ending to my meal and I hope to be back again soon.

Yelp
I loved my dinner at Hazel! The food and service were top-notch. It felt special yet welcoming.

Yelp
We went here because it had good reviews and was the closest restaurant that served pizza. We were delighted by our visit and would love to return. The vibes were great, the food was delicious, and the service was friendly and kind. We were so full after our meal we didn't feel like we would be able to eat much of the sundae. But another second later I looked down and it was almost all gone! The candied nuts made it so delicious I couldn't stop taking just one more bite!
google avatar

Yelp
Our latest visit to Hazel was nothing short of spectacular. After dreaming of their incredible pot roast since our last visit following a trip to Osmosis, we couldn't wait to return. This time, without the post-spa haze, we were thrilled to find that the meal was just as delicious as we remembered--and yes, the pot roast is still our favorite. The food and service were both wonderful and welcoming. The Brussels sprouts with bacon were a standout--every Brussels sprout should be prepared this way! The flatbread was so satisfying it nearly put us over the edge, but thankfully our server suggested we take a slice of key lime pie to go. Having tasted what's claimed to be the "best key lime pie" in Key West, we can confidently say Hazel's version is a top contender. We're already looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
OMG, I had forgotten about this place until it was in my reminders. I was on a bday trip with my best friend and this spot was recommended by some folks we met at a winery. We had already had a long day but made the drive to this spot and wow, were we glad we did! We had the sourdough to start and then the roasted chicken and pot roast for mains. We devoured the sourdough and fairly full before our mains came. We persevered anyhow and stuffed ourselves. Both the roasted chicken and pot roast were so delicious. The roast was so succulent and melt in your mouth and the horseradish was the perfect bite. We planned on coming back to the next day, but day drinking got in the way. haha.

Yelp
3 strikes and you're out. A long romantic weekend was planned for my wife and I. I independently chose this restaurant because of its Yelp rating (4.6 stars at the time of this review). I was also optimistic because 2 separate friends who live in the area also spoke highly of the restaurant. We arrived at 6 pm and we were seated next to the only other customers at that time. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine to start. The bottle was served in an ice bucket and then placed on the table for 2. There wasn't much real estate on the table and was a distraction to our conversation so I moved in on to the floor. The waitress later explained they didn't have any stands. Okay, not a strike but let's call it a foul. First item of the night was fried brussel sprouts. They did not taste right. My wife and I love brussel sprouts, but these had an alkaline after taste. Strike #1. Second item of the night were the ribs. They were good boiled ribs and hence the meat fell off the bone. No negativity for the boiled ribs. What wasn't pleasant was the ketchup and chilli oil sauce on them. Strike #2. Third item of the night, the ribeye steak. Oh the poor ribeye steak. We asked for a medium rare steak. It came medium well to almost well (see pictures). One could make the argument that spices or seasonings chosen appeal to different people, but I think medium rare steak is less subjective. Big strike #3 and we're out. The waitress could see that we weren't eating the dishes and definitely not packing any of it to go. She inquired and so we let her know what the issues were. She did ask what she could do or bring us that would help. We asked for nothing except the bill. In the end they did comp the steak from the bill. We were looking forward to this meal but maybe our Bay Area preferences and expectations did not align with this particular restaurant's cuisine.

Yelp
We love everything about Hazel. Lovely people, excellent food and service. Don't sleep on the little gem Caesar. And make sure you leave room for dessert. Jim's entries will leave you with a "future you" meal for sure.

Yelp
Hazel - New American Cuisine Restaurant This pizza is not currently on the menu (but it should be!). But because they are awesome, they went out of their way to make it for me as a special since they had the necessary ingredients on hand, and I have no shame when it comes to bugging them about it. No "Summertime Sadness" here, more like Summertime splendor: farm-fresh summer corn, cherry tomatoes that properly pop in your mouth, fresh summer zucchini, goat cheese sourced from a local farm, and just a drizzle of ancho Chille sauce (I think) for a bit of heat and depth. I'm not sure what "style" the pizza crust is, but it is crispy, chewy, and delicious, and minus the "char" taste that everyone seems to employ - I much prefer this type. Color this girl summertime happy!

Yelp
A wonderful dinner on my first visit to Occidental! High end quality with small town vibe. Excellent service and a small but interesting and reasonably diverse menu with vegetarian and gluten free considerations. I had vegan Caesar salad, pizza with caramelized onions, almonds and blue cheese and a blueberry crumble for dessert. Super flavors and enough pizza to enjoy tomorrow, too.

Yelp
Was waiting to come to Hazel for years! Thanks for such a special dinner during my bachelorette weekend! Everyone loved the pizza and salads. The environment is so cute and everyone at the restaurant was super friendly. Can't wait to come back; worth the wait.

Yelp
Lovely ambiance and very delicious food! We had the sourdough, the seafood stew, and the chocolate pot de crème and it was all fabulous
google avatar

Yelp
The best (food, place, & people. Like reluctant to share the info-level experiences, every time). I heard a person complain about chicken being too moist here once. I AGREE. It's the moistest. Also, the meatloaf is the meatiest, the short ribs are the meltiest, and the pie . . .

Yelp
Came with a large group for a birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and excellent service. Situated close to our rental and located in a cute small downtown area, Hazel was a delight to eat at. The food really reminded me of the "California style" - fresh and things that I would make at home.

Yelp
Unimpressed My family and I went Saturday . We had reservations. It was not crowded. Though we have been here before when it was good something has changed. The waitress was not warm nor very attentive. The prices are high for food that is average It seemed their was a lot of sauces covering up the food. . Well we're all disappointed.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and wow. Their wild mushroom pizza is pretty damn amazing. I've eaten a ton of pizza and there was something special about this one. Very well balanced and even better with sausage added. I was concerned with it having all of the fresh parsley, but it played an integral role in balancing out the richness. Salad was delicious, and the bread had a nice homemade flavor. Service was excellent.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! A perfect meal in a quaint town. We are staying in Occidental and did not make reservations for dinner... as we walked through town we found this little and very inviting casita with a small but varied menu. The place is so charming, the patio is very comfortable and dog friendly. The owner and pastry chef was also serving our table and the meal was absolutely phenomenal. We ordered the seasonal green salad with a fabulous fresh cheese, apples, fennel and marcona almonds. For mains we shared the quinoa dish and the pot roast, both absolutely delicious. The wine list is almost all local and obviously great and the best part... desert! Our coconut cream pie was perfection and decaf coffee was brewed right! We ordered some baked goods for breakfast next day!! This place is a must when coming to the russian river area.

Yelp
NYE at 5pm right when they open - and we were given a seat without reservations! S E R V I CE: Hazel is one of the first restaurants you see when coming down the road to this little shopping center. There's plenty of parking available, and the bathrooms are out towards the side of the building. Our server was prompt, to the point, and very professional! He gave great recommendations and even took off a cider from our bill that my fiancé did not enjoy! F O O D : My fiancé ordered the prime rib with kale and potatoes and I had their mushroom pizza. He devoured his meal and I had 3 delicious slices left over to take home. The pizza had mozzarella and melted feta cheese with different kinds of mushrooms. It was HEAVEN. For dessert I ordered a slice of butterscotch pie and my fiancé ordered their apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were eye rolling good, and I would have bought the whole butterscotch pie if it were available haha. O V E R A L L: I would definitely come back for the pizza and pie if were are in the area again. The prices were decent - I honestly thought the bill would be higher. It was a great dinner to end 2022.

Yelp
Decided to make a reservation here for a Saturday night dinner based on the quite favorable Yelp reviews. I'm glad we gave them a try. Quaint restaurant in Occidental with a cozy indoor dining area and front and back patios with heat lamps for the colder months/nights. We ordered... * Baby Mixed Lettuce - Mixed baby lettuce with beets, fennel, marcona almonds, and soft cream cheese with a light olive oil dressing. Lovely salad with lots of different goodness going on. * Pizza with 1/2 Mushroom & 1/2 Sausage & Egg -- It's very cool that they let you do half and half pizza toppings. Overall the flavors were both very good. If you like mushrooms, the mushroom pizza is very good and the truffle oil comes through nicely. Spicy garlic sausage on the Sausage & Egg slices are also very tasty. My main gripe is that, while the edge crust is nice and crisp, the center of the pizza is kind of a soggy mess. * Seared Halibut -- This was the star of our dinner. Perfectly seared Halibut was very fresh, flaky center, and crisp (skinless) sear on the outside. Served over a melange of corn and other veggies almost like a succotash... so yummy! * Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie -- Or server Michelle proudly proclaimed she baked all their desserts, so we had to give this one a try. It was very good. A light and not too sweet pumpkin Cheesecake with a nice pie crust... and no allspice to overpower the clean pumpkin taste. Service was very friendly and attentive, and we appreciated the pet friendly patio option. Excellent dining choice if you are in the Occidental area.

Yelp
My husband's ribeye was huge and tantalizing. He was a happy man, like he was in love or something. My tender roasted chicken fell off the bones and was in a deep pool if its juices. It was delicious, but I was more interested in someone's pizza near us. All I smelled was mushrooms and garlic and that's what I ended up really craving! We took our pumpkin cheesecake and sundae back to our hotel room so I could eat and relax in my cozy Snoopy pjs. Felt a little too cramped in the restaurant. Service was okay, but I felt like they were too serious, borderline snobby. Or maybe they were trying too hard to be classy and professional and I took it wrong. Not sure, but something's making me stick with 4 stars.

Candi M.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. Just the type of place we were looking for to enjoy a nice relaxing dinner with excellent food.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good (big portions), ambiance is nice (bathroom outside around back ), service was a little slow (busy), price was high. The schnitzel was gigantic, definitely eat a couple of days. All of our dishes were very delicious.

Mary M.

Yelp
I loved my dinner at Hazel. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The food was great. The servings were generous. We three ordered too much food but they boxed it up for us so nothing was wasted. I had the pot roast and it was full flavored and served with potatoes in a pool of delicious pot juices. The pork ribs and Brussels sprouts were fine too. For dessert we shared a chocolate pot de crème. Oh my-deep rich chocolate flavor. The restaurant is small and nicely decorated. We ate late in a weeknight so it wasn't full so noise level was low-which I loved.

Yelp
Outstanding restaurant in a cozy setting, excellent service, fabulous food and reasonable pricing. Our local friends recommended Hazel's and we went with their recommendations for dishes to share: sourdough bread, ribs, brussels sprouts, a Point Reyes blue cheese pizza, pots de crème and an apple crisp. We brought our own wine and paid the corkage fee. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I got into Sebastopol a few days prior to the wineroad.com Wine and Food Affair event occurring on 11/2 - 11/3. As a matter of fact, it was Halloween, 10/31, when I visited your adorable, charming, little Occidental restaurant. The pot roast and smashed Yukon potatoes were amazing! Great service. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film, The Terminator, "I'll be back!" Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!!! Amazing service, made adjustments due to food allergies. Had chicken, pizza, Caesar salads... everything fresh and flavorful and highest quality! Place was packed and understandably so!

Yelp
Amazing delicious cute little restaurant in Occidental. First time here and will come back. Service is wonderful and food is just simply amazing!!

Dani T.

Yelp
The food was delicious, timely and brought to the table in an appropriate order. The server was super sweet, knowledgeable and welcoming! Would definitely recommend this place if you're in town looking for a nice spot to eat at.

Yelp
This was my third time coming here. Never disappoints! The food is delicious. I had the chicken and it was so flavorful. Even the gem salad had a little kick to it, which was nice. I like that they have a small menu. It means everything on it is fresh and well thought out. Service was great, also!

Yelp
Popped into Hazel on New Years Eve and were able to snag a table which was nice. It wasn't too busy when we walked in. Once it picked up the atmosphere was moving but didn't feel overwhelming in the space. Service was quick, efficient and knowledgeable. Food was delicious, the steak was cooked perfectly and paired well with the potatoes. The only downside was the cider wasn't the best tasting but they took it off the tab which was super nice. If you're in Occidental check this place out it's nice, delicious and has great service.

Yelp
Our Forum group gathered in Western Sonoma for our annual retreat, starting with our dinner at Hazel. PROS 1. Excellent service from beginning to end. 2. No corkage fee for the 2 bottle of Sonoma Red brought in. 3. Delicious appetizers (Fried Brussels Sprouts and a Blue Cheese Accented Pizza) 4. Even better Mains in generous quantities. I (and others) ordered the Pot Roast (Very Midwest) and it was a dish that could easily be shared. Other popular group choices included Ribeye and Roasted Chicken. 5. Sugar, Spice And Everything Nice. Before I fell into a well earned food coma, I remember an ice cream sundae and chocolate Desserts for the table. 6. Great Friends and Conversation. 7. One sign of a great night out like this is a well deserved walk around the block before heading back to the Hotel. CONS - Not Really.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
Before heading to Sonoma for a few days, I looked up a few restaurants for dinner and Hazel was on my list of options. It was late and we were scrambling through our searches that was still open and would take us in within such short time from closing. With about 45 min to closing, we called just to make sure they would seat us and with open arms, they said come on by. Phew! No service and dark roads made us take a slight detour but we managed to arrive at Hazel around 8:40 pm. Mushroom Pizza - Funghi with my funghi. This pizza was amazeballs. We drizzled on some chili oil for a little kick and wowzers. Ribeye - So. Good. Perfectly cooked, huge piece of meat (pre sliced cuz we just wanna eat and not do the work), and lots of flavor. The potato wedges were amazing as well. And dont get me started with the bed of kale-- you could literally count that as a salad starter. Sundae - A perfect way to end the meal. The crispy bits of almonds, cherries, and drizzled caramel was a great combo. Most importantly, great service. Everyone was kind, attentive, and a good sport (69*)!

Yelp

Yelp
10 out of 10. Braised pot roast was the star of the show! Service was excellent. And the ambiance in the middle of December after a rainy day at 8 pm was everything!

Yelp
My wife and I were on a getaway for my birthday. We looked on yelp for a restaurant and found Hazel in Occidental. We were welcomed and seated right away, and our server was very prompt and courteous. The surroundings are not very upscale, but the entire atmosphere is clean and homey. I liked it very much: clean tables, clean counters, clean glasses, and silverware. All of these things, however, were not the best part. The best part was the food. I had the pot roast and my wife had the mushroom pizza. Both of us commented that our dinners were among the best we've ever had anywhere in any restaurant. Also, neither of us could finish our dinner because the portion size was so large. We were so full, we had to decline dessert. This truly made for a memorable birthday.

Yelp
I found that the food lacked a lot of flavour, but the salad was amazing. Specifically, the pie was very dry and the fish lacked any flavour. The restaurant is very pretty itself, service was decent.

Yelp
Best pot roast I've ever had! Stopped here for dinner last night and was not disappointed! We had a big group on a wine trip who had dined here 3 years ago and loved it so much we had to go back. It completely met our expectations! I got the pot roast and it's the only one I've ever had comparable to my moms tried to eat the whole thing but it's definitely enough for two! Brussel Sprouts are also to die for. Local wines, great service, can't go wrong with this spot!
