Hazel, Ravines and Downtown Celebrates Stone Crab Season With Seafood Menu Takeover | Eater Detroit

"Owners Beth Hussey and chef Emmele Herrold have retooled the dining room into a Gulf Coast–style pop-up for stone crab season, shipping seafood daily from Florida fishermen and extending the takeover through late March. The temporary menu expands the usual raw bar with a la carte stone crab served with mustard sauce and platters, a Sailor’s Sampler (conch fritters, popcorn grouper, alligator bites, peel-and-eat shrimp, and hushpuppies), a grouper Reuben, head-on barbecue shrimp in a peppery butter sauce, and the Crazy Crabganza—a three-pound heap of stone, king, and snow crab. Beachy cocktails like frozen margaritas, daiquiris, and Hurricanes, plus boozy milkshakes, accompany desserts such as key lime, coconut, and banoffee pie, while regular favorites like the Token burger, spicy chicken wings, and cheese bread remain on offer." - Brenna Houck

Google
First time visiting. We ordered escovitch fish and jerk chicken. The chicken could stand to be cooked another 30 minutes to be a bit tender it has a good flavo. The fish does as well but needed that familiar stew and this one was lacking The onions provide a good compliment with the rice and peas being blandly seasoned and in the absence of plantain and cabbage, although we were charged for a regular meal. I wouldn't go out of my way for this again but will try again not so close to closing

Google
The atmosphere is simple & unpretentious. The service was friendly. The jerk chicken was authentic & very tasty. ...but the goat curry... Truly Magnificent!!! I would've given it 6 Stars if they'd let me. We will definitely be back!

Natalie M.

Google
If I could leave 0 stars I would. My husband placed an order at the restaurant immediately after getting to the car we opened the food to try and it was cold!!! I called to ask when was the food made she said earlier in the day. This is not fresh food… fresh food is made when you order not the morning off. She said the chef normally heats up all the food before giving it away so they basically just microwave the food and the plate it and send you off on your way.

Google
Food and service are top notch. The restaurant... unless you're from the Caribbean you might not enjoy dining in with no a/c. In Florida, in July. It wasn't warm in there, it was sweltering, and near as I could tell, it wasn't broke, that's just how they like it. Okay for them and kindred, but.... Still, highly recommended. Just might wanna consider take out.

Elyzabeth Y.

Google
I went when it first opened so there was no wait the food was amazing we ordered the oxtail the service was fast. It's wheelchair accessible and family friendly. I'd definitely come again.

Evelyn Langes G.

Google
I was glad to be back in Florida and looked forward to one of my favorite stops Hazel's, I dont know if ownership changed but the quality of the food and just getting meat and rice with no sides for the price was disappointing. They never have to worry about me again.

Brittany H.

Google
Authentic food and great service. Atmosphere may need some updating but well worth the stop.

T L.

Google
The food was good. It wasn’t the best I’ve had before. The curry chicken was good and hot but it had so many bones. The rice was great but the vegetables were not to my liking. They should have been cooked longer. The restaurant was clean but very small.

Yelp
Wow! Do I have to say anything, just look at the picture! This is my favorite place for a jerk chicken meal. Everything is so yummy, the sauce, rice, and even vegetables. I like that they give you 2 little cups of extra sauce on the side just incase you want it. I always order to go and they never disappoint

Devon O.

Yelp
management changed and just not the same. same look but not the same with miss hazel gone.

Yelp
Updated review, it's sad when you absolutely love Jamaican cooking but the people cooking are unpleasant. I really love how they cook there curry goat but I won't be returning do to unpleasant staff
google avatar

Chauncy T.

Yelp
They served burnt rice!!!!! Horrible!!! Food didn't have much flavor!!! I bought 6 dishes and spent over 100 dollars!!

Lisa W.

Yelp
Jerk chicken is hard and the rice and peas were hard and overcooked. Would return if they'd go back to serving good quality food.

Luke C.

Yelp
Jerk chicken was good 7.5/10, rice and peas did not seem too be fresh maybe from the day before which I didn't like. I'll leave 3 stars for the rice and peas and I also feel like the customer service could've been better.

Trace S.

Yelp
Best jerk chicken in brevard hands down, you put that sweet sauce on there sheesh that stuff gone have your tongue punching your brain.
google avatar

Cassandra D.

Yelp
Food has been amazing for years!!! Jerk chicken is the best around!! I usually get takeout but they do have tables as well

Yelp
I've been traveling to Melbourne Florida regularly since April 2020, & whenever I'm in the area of Palm Bay I always drop by Hazel's for her incredible oxtails. All I can say is "wow"!!!They are that good, &let me first start out by saying that my travels usually are by car so we're eating on the road all the way from Virginia to Florida. If you thought takeout was bad pre-corvid 19 pandemic, it's indescribably awful now. So by the time we reach our destination in Florida,my first stop & first meal in Florida is always at Hazel's & it's always oxtails!Thank you Hazel.

Hailey G.

Yelp
Just moved to town from Orlando, haven't seen any good Jamaican spots around until i ate at Hazels. Oxtails was buss and food came out quick too i
google avatar

Daunise K.

Yelp
Anytime you have to give your chicken an I.V. drip, you know it's too dry! I have never experienced sweet, non-grilled, dry jerk chicken in my life. Did they BAKE IT? When did brown sugar become the makings for jerk chicken? I'm still confused! Never again!!!
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
Rude chick at the front won't be back. Rolled her eyes at every question. And I had 2! If you hate your job find something else to do!
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
The service and decor definitely leave something to be desired, especially on a busy Friday night. This is a hike-in-the-wall type place but the food is very very good and authentic. Yummo homemade well spiced soups. Delicious jerk chicken and bread or rice n beans. Whole snapper or escovetch. Oxtail. Fried and boiled dumpling. Fried plantains were a bit greasy but tasty. Friendly family run operation. Casual. Ting soda, irish moss, and other artifically sweetened "juices" and such from da island. Pattys.

Tamiko M.

Yelp
Camesha, respond outside of this review. Shame on you Camesha! You are showing your age! You must be the Great grand of Hazel. Your comment destroys the legacy of Hazels. We know Hazel would not approve of this comment. Be careful... Most people in Melbourne retire down here with New Money. "Broke"you say? , no but would like to support small businesses but not when outrageously priced. First closing the register an hour before closing, taking cash only and pocketing it? HANDLING FOOD And money while sweeping. Iam back in Melbourne and selected to eat at a new restaurant "Awesome" instead because of your response. This restaurant was Awesome pun intended. They are still in love with the community. We expect professionalism, the menu to reflect what it advertise and to confirm what the cashier quoted is true. If your menus reflects 7 years ago online, Then the responsibility is yours' as a restaurant. Let an adult respond, this is constructive criticism! Do better!!!!

Yelp
Ran in for a quick lunch. This is my family's local go to spot for home cooked Jamaican food. They season the food with the right amount of spice unlike other caribbean restaurants in the area that water down the food. Take out usually takes 5-15 min depending on what you order. You can always call ahead if you're short on time. Today I got the brown stewed chicken which is pretty good. The lunch portion is a generous size for $6.38. Today's service was friendly and good and he gave me a true estimate of waiting time.
google avatar

Nina H.

Yelp
Went today and had the wonderful Curry goat, cabbage and rice and it was really good. But I also wanted jerk wings (called ahead) and they didn't have any, wanted a chicken pattie, he said he only had beef and when I got there they didn't have beef either. But I tell you the curry goat meal was so good.. I will still be back.

Camesha S.

Yelp
Tamiko M , seems miserable! I am a paying customer since Hazel's was at jerkys on Palm Bay Rd. I am no grand of Mrs.Hazels! I was getting ready to write a review, when I saw how feisty you we're being. Would you like it if I was to come to your place of business and ruin your legacy as you say of Mrs.Hazel. If I was to walk into a establishment and don't like what I'm seeing, Do you think i'm going to place an order for food? Just to leave and complain! For you to say you know Mrs. Hazel is belligerent.

Ariana S.

Yelp
also deciduous eating there, LOVE the food and the sauces. my favorite is the jerk chicken with the rice and veggies, the cabbage is my favorite and it's overal so good
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
So yummy and filled with spicy goodness! Authentic! Great local establishment, never a disappointment!
google avatar

Sin C.

Yelp
Waiting for my food and I ask for a receipt and the man is irritated with me for asking. Have not ate the food yet but if I'm bothering you for a receipt because my large ox tail an small curry came out to $25 my business must not mean that much to them. Won't be back. I can spend my cash elsewhere.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Wait was long and I made the mistake of not checking the container before we left. Wow! Even though the order was inaccurate still I attempted to eat it. Revolting, the fish smelt funny and the cabbage was overcooked brown mush. Topping it all off the rice was nauseating ! It was more like slushy pudding topped with the random red pea. Called them promptly and was subjected to incoherent gibberish from the server. "Bottom line is you get what it comes with", she yelled. Paragon of virtue she was...

Yelp
I've been going here for quite some time and the customer service is horrible!!!!! Every cashier I've come in contact with is rude as hell. I love the food it's very tasty and portion size is great that's why I continue to patronize it. If you can deal with rude, not nice, unpleasant, unprofessional customer service try it but if not don't go because their very unfriendly.
google avatar

Vena V.

Yelp
The Jamaican food here is unbelievably good. The beef patties, the curry chicken, the curried goat, the brown stew chicken, the jerk chicken, the oxtail stew, the spicy fried escoveitched snapper - these are all exceptional dishes. They did a lot of catering for me and my team was happiest and most productive when I brought in Hazel's. (One senior guy was allergic to one of the spices used, so I made sure to have some El Bohio's in the fridge for him when we brought in Hazel's for the team). This is get-on-a-plane-and-fly-down-here food. So come on down.
google avatar

Shauntae F.

Yelp
Good food, great prices! Staff was very friendly. My husband and I got the large jerk chicken (8 pieces) and shared it, we have left overs for later with that. We also got Jamaican soda there, which is so delicious, I recommend Ting but lots of other people like the ginger beer. I will go back.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Not friendly. Their food was obviously old. Beef patties were great. I will stick with strawberry. They might not have as many menu items but they are nice and the food is always fresh.

Tina H.

Yelp
I have visited Hazel's on two separate occasions. Each time, I was unsuccessful. My first visit was with my daughter who was in town visiting from Atlanta. The young lady at the front register was rude - and frankly, very arrogant. So much so, we decided to leave without trying out the food. Willing to give them a second chance, I return to Hazel's for lunch today. Again, I met the same type of arrogant, non-caring, non-customer focused type attitude from a different employee. This indicates a systemic problem. I will not give patronage in an unfriendly environment, so I left and do not intend to return. If you are seeking polite, friendly service --- STAY AWAY FROM HAZEL'S.
google avatar

Breanna M.

Yelp
Ordered the spicy beef patty and it was pretty good. Good Caribbean food compared to other places in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
My second time here. First time I got the curry chicken, this time I got the brown chicken stew. Both I really liked. Great, robust flavor. The rice and black beans were just the right amount of counterweight to absorb the flavors of the stew. I had to add some hot sauce on the side because that's just how I am, but the meal stood fine by itself. My only minor complaint is that the stew and cabbage were both too oily, but as far as comfort food goes, they were great. I'm always a huge fan of bone-in, slow cooked chicken because all the flavor is in the bones. The service was really nice; the guy up front is fantastic and you cant help but overhear all the folks in kitchen laughing it up; great family ambiance. I'll definitely go back.

Yelp
First time walking in to a Caribbean /Jamaican restaurant and most definitely will not be the last... The food is cooked as ordered, it's fresh, delicious and the wait time is minimum.. They have a nice young lady in the front that was very helpful, nice and friendly.. I had the jerk chicken lunch deal, for the first time ever, and it was amazing... Definitely coming back and recommend it to anyone in the area.. NOTE: it's a mom/pop restaurant, won't be as luxurious as a chain restaurant, but you'll feel as if you're home away from home.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
They make the best jerk chicken and Jamaican BBQ I have ever had. The owners are upfront and tell you how long you good will take, they also have award winning beef patties
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
I've been a loyal patron of Hazel's ever since she opened. Great, tasty Jamaican food, served with a smile! I used to be a jerk chicken only guy, but looking at that extensive menu of "weird" (LOL!) stuff week after week, month after month, I finally broke down and have broadened my culinary horizons - I'm as likley to order curry goat these days as i am chicken or pork! This is a place I always take people to who are tired of the "same old, same old"!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
This place is authentic. Hazel's has the best jerk chicken I've ever had. I moved away, but make it a point to stop by hazel's when I'm in town. Delicious and very affordable. Huge portions. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
This will be my 3 visit to hazel & my meals have been great eco fish excellent & her cabbage amazing I just love this style of food & Iam from Land of lakes just outside of Tampa .. I recommend

Yelp
Now I'm no expert on Caribbean or Jamaican food so I can't really say for certain whether this is the "best" around town, but what I can tell you is that I really enjoyed Hazel's! The young lady who took our order was helpful and attentive. The place was quaint and charming. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by friendly patrons who were gushing about what a great place Hazel's is. I ordered the jerk chicken and pork combo for take out. My boyfriend ordered the same, except he also ordered oxtail and a side of cabbage for his combo, where I opted for an extra side of rice with peas. After a short wait, we were on our way with our take out food in hand. A level of excitement grew as the enticing aroma of the freshly cooked food took over the car. We got home and were happy when we both opened our meals and found a generous portion of food. The jerk pork was tender and very tangy with a nice kick. But my favorite was the jerk chicken- it was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice jerk/ peppery taste, also with a nice kick. Overall we were both very happy with the taste of the food and satisfied with the portions. I'll definitely go back!

Yelp
Jerk chicken lunch special is sooooo good. Really good portions and good price. Comes with cabbage and red beans and rice. Spicy beef patties are also really good too and they're only $2.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
This food is very authentic and delicious. I go everyday for lunch with my co-workers. We love the jerk chicken because of the large portions and quick service. The staff is very friendly and service is excellent. The restaurant allows us to call our order in advance, which saves us a lot of time.
google avatar

Shauna R.

Yelp
Went there for lunch one afternoon. Grabbed some brown stew chicken. It was pretty good. Much better than the other local Jamaican restaurants near by. Prices were decent and the portion was pretty large. I'd go back.
google avatar

Sharon L.

Yelp
The food is so good !!! The chicken was amazing. The flavors lingered oh so wonderful!!! Cabbage crunchy and yummy. I can't wait to try more.
google avatar

Chantale M.

Yelp
I called in around 6:10 pm to ask if they had anymore oxtails. The woman who answered the phone said that they had only enough for a large. I went ahead and ordered a small portion. I opened the box to make sure my order was correct. However, I should have tasted my food before I left. Omg it was horrible. The rice and peas were hard. Idk if I had gotten the bottom of the pot or if they freeze their food and thaw it out to order. My oxtails were cold. Lacked flavor. My cabbage was hot but lacked flavor and didn't taste fresh. I've eaten at Hazels several times. Their food is a hit or miss. There's no consistency. Their rice is constantly hard, rather it's white rice or rice and peas. If you don't have time to take a bite of food before you leave then pls save your self the aggravation and go elsewhere. Also they lady up front isn't too pleasant. It's not that hard to smile. Be ware. Eat at your own risk. I'm so upset I wasted $12 on a small plate of inedible food.

Deidra B.

Yelp
Horrible, I ordered the jerk pork and chicken, salty and dry like old reused. The cabbage and carrots was greasy. The rice and beans mushy. I think they serving days old food. Waste if money, not a Jamaican restaurant food quality at all.

Myrts S.

Yelp
We are from NY visiting Melbourne and got takeout here. The reviews that are positive probably never had really good Jamaican food. The jerk chicken was sweetish not spicy it was some kind of rib meat, the curried goat was watery and had a heavy goat smell and taste, wasn't washed well????? The oxtails was bland not seasoned well. The service? If you like sullen scowling and non vocal service this is the place for you. We wasted a lot of money and threw out a lot of food. My recommendation? Find the Latin market called Thrifty Produce on Palm Bay Rd not far down the street and order their hot food, to die for and huge servings never disappointed and I must say better than NY Bodega food.

Michael T.

Yelp
Fantastic carribean food! They are located in a run down strip mall type place. Once you step in and the carribean beats are blasting over the stereo, you realize you made a good call. The food is amazing - jerk, curries, patties, plantains, it is all good.

Ted S.

Yelp
Best Jamaican food in the county. I recommend the ox tail, jerk pork and jerk chicken with cabbage and rice on the side

Kristin C.

Yelp
I am from Miami and have eaten Jamaican food and Caribbean food a million times because it is my absolute favorite. This place however was the worst place I have ever tried and was so bad we couldn't even finish our plates before throwing them away. The rice was very old, dry, and lacked peas, the brown stew chicken had 0 flavor basically was chicken boiled in a plain sauce, and the oxtail was full of fat and the sauce extremely oily. It was also very over priced as we paid $25 for 2 plates. I will NEVER eat there again and would not recommend it to anyone.

Colleen T.

Yelp
Amazing food. We ate there but not many tables. Many people were coming for take-out. Highly recommend!

Karen B.

Yelp
LOVE that chicken from Hazel's! We always get the 3-piece dinners. They come with beans and rice and a side of cabbage. The chicken is SO delicious, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. It comes with two different sauces which we just pour over the whole mess. It's really too much to eat in one sitting, but we manage *somehow*. Best Jamaican chicken around. It never disappoints.

Zach H.

Yelp
We are regulars here. No explanation is needed, if you need a Jamaican fix, look no more. A+ service and food.

K O.

Yelp
We tried this restaurant for take out on a whim and were not disappointed. The food was so flavorful and the portions were huge. I am a fan and will be back. We had the curry chicken, jerk chicken and pork combo, steamed cabbage, and oxtail. Everything was so good and very reasonably priced.

Khloe I.

Yelp
The service, well there wasn't any! The lady spoke about 3 words, "what size and $22.00" thats it! The jerk chicken was more like over-grilled until dry, with a watery sweet pepper "sauce" I gotta say this was the worst version of jerk chicken I've come across in all my travels. I can't speak on the other menu items perhaps they're yummy but i'm steering clear of this place!
