The 15 Best Decatur Restaurants - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"If you come to Heaps Pies, be prepared for pastry flakes to take up residence on your shirt. But these meat pies are so good, you’ll welcome the crumbs as keepsakes of a beloved friend gone too soon. Our favorite is the green thai chicken curry that’s just spicy enough to make your eyes water. But every pie is bursting with gooey flavor-rich fillings and has more flaky layers than the plot of Inception. Dive into your casual meal at one of the picnic tables that fill the red dining room lined with New Zealand paraphernalia. There’s typically a rugby game on the giant TV, but we’re usually plugged into quality time with our savory meat pies." - juli horsford, jacinta howard, nina reeder

The 9 Best Bakeries and Cafes for Meat Pies Near Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"This Southern Hemisphere import made the leap from pop-up to brick-and-mortar to southside Atlanta, bringing its golden-crusted single-serve pies along for the ride. Each buttery pastry is stuffed with hearty fillings that riff on global favorites — think Cubano, butter chicken, or the green Thai chicken curry with a fiery kick and a rich coconut sauce. Classic brisket is reimagined in a bechamel with jalapeños while the braised lamb with kumara, the Maori name for sweet potato, peas, and mint offers slow-cooked comfort. Pair any of these with another New Zealand import: Gizza, a crisp pilsner. Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur also serves Heaps Pies." - Nandita Godbole

I've been meaning to get to Heaps ever since their days at Boggs. However I had a festival to play down the street, so could only order takeout. It's crazy how different the restaurant looks beyond the bricks. It's very relaxed where you can bring your kids to watch soccer on tv. But upon closer inspection it's an amalgam of New Zealand, Decatur, Atlanta, and Nyc. They got Gza and Sharon Jones framed. Also vintage and modern. That yellowed menu board takes me back. Also their bathrooms are super clean and modern. I ordered a beef and cheddar pie and fish and chips. Be warned these pies are both filling and addictive. It was savory and the crust was flaky like biscuit layers. The fried fish was fresh, chips were a decent cut, and I could eat that remoulade sauce on just about everything. Gotta hand it to the owner Jake Harvey. He's done an amazing job, going from pop-up to now his own restaurant. Need to go back asap. Check out Heaps!

Google
Really amazing food here! We tried two of the pies (beef and cheddar and Thai green curry chicken). The crust is super flaky, and the fillings are delicious. We can't wait to return and try more of the fillings. The fish and chips are also some of the best I've had in the area. Great service and atmosphere as well!

We enjoyed fish on a Friday Fish Fry. The sandwich was enormous, topped with coleslaw and a fresh garnish. It was so large that eating it became a delightful challenge. The cod-based fish and chips were exceptional. The batter was light and flaky, and the fish was perfectly cooked. The dining area had a rustic charm, featuring bench seating and a picnic-like atmosphere that created a stylish ambiance. The wait time was reasonable, even during the Friday lunch rush. I highly recommend stopping by on a Friday to satisfy your craving for fish and chips.

Google
Great place for a delicious change from the normal restaurant fare. Pies are out of this world with light pastry crust (unlike the heavy US type) and fillings are delish. We had their lunch special, a chicken pot pie and Thai chicken curry pie with coleslaw and mash potato got the sides with sodas. I saw a delicious fish and chips on the next table…. That I didn’t se on the menu. “Authentic” fish and chips are offender on Fridays only. Maybe next time. Wide range of pies including hot cold and savory. A nice selection of beers sodas. It took us several attempts to find the place, and I’m glad we persisted. We will be back!!

There’s plenty of parking space in front of the shop, which is nice. I’ve been buying his pies and stocking up on the frozen ones since the days he did pop-ups and had a booth at outdoor farmers markets. I’m glad he finally opened a brick-and-mortar shop. I visited on a Sunday around lunchtime. The shop was almost full, but there were still indoor seats available, which was great. The ordering process was quick, and the food came out fast. We had the fish & chips and the beef & cheddar pie. For now, the fish & chips are only available on Fridays and weekends, but he plans to expand the menu soon. The cod was very fresh and not greasy, and the fries were tasty as well. As for the pies, they’re what the shop is known for, solid quality, and it really just comes down to picking your favorite flavor. The shop is partially self-service: each order comes with an empty cup, and customers can grab bottled water from the cooler for their table. After eating, customers return their trays to the tray station and dispose of leftovers and trash themselves. The owner is very friendly and was present at the shop when we visited. He answered all my questions about the special items and frozen pie stock. To me, these pies are one of those rare food items that maintain their great quality even after being frozen. There are oven reheating instructions on the website, but I found that using an air fryer works perfectly. I thaw the frozen pie in the fridge overnight, then air fry it at 350°F for 15 minutes works like a charm. Highly recommended!

Solid. Of the items I've tried so far, all have been solid. Fish shop is only Fri-Sun starting at 12pm. The fish sandwich was messy to eat but most delicious things are. Curry fries were an extra $4 but worth it. Served with a thick curry sauce on the side perfect for dipping. I took leftover sauce home cuz I didn't want to waste it. Curiosity got the best of me and I ended up buying their cold pies to take home to try. You can throw in the freezer if you don't plan to eat within a few days. Easy to reheat in the oven. I've tried the Thai Chicken one so far and it was delicious! Not as dry as I was expecting (I had some meat pies in London before and thought it may be similar texture) and there was plenty of flavor. Crust was well laminated and flaky. Slight kick to it so maybe not kid friendly if your kid isn't used to spice. Can't wait to try the other flavors and will keep an eye out on their rotation menu for the Butter Chicken one. Staff was also incredibly kind and helpful with my 50 questions.

Comfort food at its best! I love these pies so much and the flavors are amazing. The shop is awesome as well :) had the butter chicken and green Thai, not delicious!

I stopped by Heaps and was blown away by how fresh and delicious everything was. The spinach and ricotta pie was rich, creamy, and wrapped in the flakiest crust it was comforting without feeling heavy. Paired with the kale salad (which was crisp, well-dressed, and surprisingly addictive), it made for a perfect light dinner that still felt indulgent. The owner was so kind and friendly, taking the time to chat and make sure everyone felt welcome. It’s rare to find that kind of warmth paired with such quality food. I’ll be back!

Yelp
We finally tried Heaps and it was fantastic. The owner was at the register and answered my questions and was very welcoming. I came by early to avoid the crowds and we were able to chat a bit while the food was being prepared. We talked about how when different cultures merge and the wonderful foods that result from that convergence. She mentioned that they try to source as many ingredients as they can locally. They even use our favorite butcher, Pine Street Market, for some of their ingredients. I got everything to go and rushed home. The delicious smells in my car were driving me crazy! I had the Chana Masala pie and my partner had the fish and chips. He shared some fries and I dipped mine into the remoulade and it was incredible! I'm tempted to as for the recipe next time. The Chana Masala pie was perfect; crisp and perfectly laminated pastry with a luscious filling. It's vegan but you'd never know; it was rich and delicious. My partner loved the fish and chips, too. He said the batter was perfect; light and crispy. He said the citrus in the remoulade was a perfect counterpoint to the richness of the fried food. It was a great meal and we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Glad to see another restaurant occupying this space. I'd driven by Heaps a few times and decided to stop by and give it a try. They have a variety of savory pies, a few sandwiches, and sides. I wasn't totally sure what to expect from the pies, but I ordered the Thai chicken curry because I love lemongrass & anything hing Thai. And I must say it was quite tasty, as was the kale salad I ordered on the side. I'll certainly be back to try the other savory pies. Service was quick & they bring out your order once it's ready. The set up is causal with picnic tables, so just get in where you fit in and enjoy your meat pie. I also noticed they have frozen take home pies too, which is a nice option.

Yelp
I am super excited to see the brick and mortar location, and it is only two minutes from my workspace! If you know where the new Publix is on East Ponce or First Oriental, it is between those two businesses. Staff is friendly and gave me suggestions for the six pie special for $60. Let me choose from hot, cold, or frozen pies or a combination of the six. I opted for six hot pies so that the family could feast too well tonight! I already know that the Pies will be amazing, because I have had them numerous times before at the Oakhurst farmers market. my only sadness is they are not open on Mondays and Tuesdays. But today is Friday and we will feast well tonight!

Yelp
I went out today to treat myself on a beautiful Sunday, after a long week. I settled down into Heaps and immediately connected with the vinyl record covers on the wall. It was airy and not very busy at the moment so I spoke briefly with the main hostess. She was very warm and reassured me that the fish sandwich was indeed worth the rave reviews. I ordered and also had one of their brews. The sandwich came out pretty quickly along with some of the best French Fries in this city. The sandwich was delicious, and quite filling, overpowering the bun it sat on. Lots of great flavors between the slaw and the remoulade. A nice crispy sandwich on a beautiful summer day. I saw it filling up a little more as I was leaving. All in all I will definitely be back. Great service and food.

Yelp
The space is clean inviting and well decorated........... I was the only person there yesterday from what I assume is a soft opening. I never heard of this place or tried them at a farmers market like the others. I just tried them today because I was just hungry and they were close by. I tried them on the recommendation of yelp. They had 5 stars. I did not eat all day so I was hungry. The person who works there recommended beef and cheddar. The pies looked kind of small so I also ordered the Chana Masala and mashed potatoes. The beef cheddar seems bigger or heavier than the Chana seems like they stuff that one to the brim. It was pretty good the crust reminds me of a beef patty there was no spice to this one it was pretty good. The Chana was a little smaller than the beef and was not as filling it had a tomato base which was okay. And just a little spice that I really enjoyed. I ate the Chana fast and was full half way through the beef I also ordered the mash and gravy. The mash seemed dry and I am so confused by that because it had gravy on it. Maybe it needed some butter or some milk or something but it was lacking flavor for sure. I don't think I would come back portion size (I feel these pies should be smaller and cost less or slightly bigger for $12) flavor (it was alright nothing spectacular) location (I am not over on this side much) But I would say feel free to give them a try and let me know what you think

Yelp
This is the spot for savory pies. They have been popping up at different farmers market but finally have a brick and mortar and it is definitely worth a visit. They have a ton of good pie options including some veggie pies and meat pies. I loved the chana masala pie that I had. It was super flavorful and the sweet chili sauce it came with was the perfect addition. We also tried the brisket, jalapeno, and cheese pie and I was told that it was really good. It had a ton of cheese in it and was very flavorful too. They were also very filling. Right now they are serving warm pies with mashed potatoes as a side option but they are going to serving some additional items as well. They also offer frozen pies to go. I know that they are going to be offering fish and chips and rice bowls. So I'll definitely go back to try those and to get more pies!

Yelp
Excellent food and service. The staff was very friendly. I had the green chicken pie and my wife had the ricotta spinach pie. We sat with a regular who was from New Zealand. He had the fish and chips and got pies to go. I also decided to take a sausage roll and lemon curd pie to go. Everything was excellent and I highly recommend you try it. Cozy atmosphere with clean restrooms.

Yelp
Nice little spot with amazing savory pies. We had the Thai curry and the Cubano and both were really flavorful. The crust is perfect. It's crispy and flaky and we will be back when the pie craving hits. Everyone that was in there has an Aussie / Kiwi accent so you know they like a savory pie ha. Bluey was playing on the TV too so if your kids are questioning your decision they'll soon forget because everyone loves Bluey, even 40 year old men. It's quality TV programming.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. What a great experience all around. The fish and chips were sadly not available the day we were there, but the kind people behind the counter were careful to make sure we were taken care of, and then some. We got 4 different pies, mashed potatoes, and a kale salad. Everything was scrumptious beyond belief, and affordable. What a great addition to the neighborhood. Wishing this place all the best.

Yelp
People should eat more meat pies! This place is fantastic. Service is great and they have a nice outdoor seating area. The fish and chips is a respectable fish and chips. You also can get pies frozen to go and heat at home. We can't wait to come back with NZ family.

Yelp
This is one of a kind! At least in Atlanta. To get it somewhere else you'd have to fly to the land of Kiwis, New Zealand. Jake (the owner and chef) built this business one pie at a time. Starting out in a kitchen of Bogg's near West End Atlanta and now, you can enjoy his pies in a space Heaps calls its own. I'd call the main attraction here a meat pie, but there's veggie ones on the menu too. So, like Heaps call them, they're "savory pies." We had a lamb and a breakfast pie. When Heaps ran the kitchen at a bar near West End, I had the fish and chips (which was perfect) and is coming soon to the menu here. If you've been to one of Atlanta's breweries, you've likely seen them in a heat tray on the counter. While that's still one way to enjoy them, you're missing out if you don't come into Heaps new home to have a pie, and soon, a pint of beer or glass of wine.

Yelp
Everything was super fresh and well made. Had the fish n chips, good thin batter and quality fish, hand cut fries. Cheddar & beef pie, super tasty with the house made tomato chutney. Nice seating indoor and outdoor. Highly recommend the Heaps Pilsner beer on tap too. Good stuff!

Yelp
I knew Jake (not the Jake from State Farm) when he was slinging pies at Monday Night Garage. I knew one day he'd have his own place and hoot dare it is! I love love love this new spot with its down home (not down under Mate!) feel with indoor and outdoor seating. Best NZ style meat and veggie pies on the planet. Jake only uses the best ingredients sourced right down the street at YDFM! He took fish and chips to a whole new level with me. The cod is fresh and never frozen and the batter is perfectly tempura like. His pies ain't cheap so don't expect to get out of there without dropping your hard earned mulla but I'll pay extra to have homemade, locally sourced, and mostly organic food any day. He also has some authentic beers on tap. It's the perfect date night place or meeting friends to make some special memories. Not to mention it's authentic New Zealander food! Where the hell else in the ATL can you get that?

Yelp
Great food and nice atmosphere. We got the 6 pack and really enjoyed the types of options we had.

Yelp
Super nice owners. Kid-friendly. Breezy and relaxing with the roll-up wall. The vegetarian pie (kale, butternut squash) that I had was delicious.

Yelp
Mom and I decided to give this spot a try since we both enjoy pot pies and baby they did not disappoint. Now a pot pie sits inside a tiny aluminum pan where delicious goodness is enclosed inside a pastry shell with no soggy bottom. The whole pie is eatable. We ordered one spinach and ricotta cheese and one brisket/cheddar. We sat outside. They arrived hot and looked amazing. We split them in half so that we can both try each and they both were soooo good. Trust me if you're in the area stop by. They will not disappoint.

Yelp
Had a sneak peak of Heaps first physical shop! They are serving up their meat pies and sausage rolls in their own restaurant. I've been eating them at farmers markets for years and it's been incredible to watch them grow. The space is perfect, the staff is lovely, and there's even benches outside to enjoy the weather with your four-legged friends. I had the brisket jalapeño and the beef and cheddar, both excellent. Love the sweet chili sauce as well! They officially open on the 9th!

Kari F.

Yelp
The pies are so comforting. The flaky pie crust has a beautiful texture. Two of us attempted to share 3 pies and were too full to eat all 3, but we tried. We have the brisket & jalapeño, Thai curry, and Chana masala. The beef was the favorite of both of us. But honestly they were all delicious. The staff/owners were so lovely.

Abby T.

Yelp
The food was so good!!! For lunch you can get a savory pie, side, and a drink for $17. I got the beef brisket, jalapeño, and cheese pie and it was amazing. So filling, I had a hard time finishing it. Service was great. Some of the photos don't do a good job of showing the interior; it was nicer than I thought it would be. Will definitely come back.

Ashlee L.

Yelp
I have passed by this place numerous times and finally got a chance to try it. It's AMAZING! They explained the different type of pies and I went with the classic beef and cheddar. It was so tasty. Grabbed the mashed potatoes and sausage roll too. Both are great! Excellent service and very quick. You won't be disappointed!

Aster B.

Yelp
I ordered this place food. It was delicious. The only thing I'm not happy is coming late other than that is great.

J M.

Yelp
Very good savory pies. Tried the Cubano and it was great. Nice decor. Can get pies to go also.

Liz t.

Yelp
I've been to Heaps Pies twice now and sent several friends there. All share my newfound enthusiasm for these tasty pies. I've had the chicken pot pie and the brisket, jalapeño & cheese. My husband is vegetarian and has had mum's veggie. Each of us felt one pie constituted a filling lunch, but I noticed some folks around us eating two. (I could eat two at one sitting, but it would require me to take to my bed afterward for a long nap.) I am planning a return trip tomorrow as I want to try the sausage roll. The place is casual and has a relaxed vibe. It's a great stop if you are headed to the DeKalb Farmers Market, which is just down Ponce. This is perfect place to take friends who like to eat, not the pals who order a salad and push the lettuce around the plate before announcing they're full.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch on their second day of officially being open and was not disappointed - good parking, nice space and really choice pies! Friendly staff at the counter made us feel welcome. Lamb and veg pie and chicken pot pie were bang on! Can't wait to come back and try their full menu -and living just a mile away - it will be soon and often.
