14 Best Coffee Shops in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"Heart, in Portland's Kerns neighborhood, is one of the better roasters in town—it's perfect for your most coffee-obsessed friends. Here, you'll find incredibly high-quality espresso drinks made from lighter-than-usual roasts that highlight the complexity of each single origin. (The brewed coffee is good, too, but it's not made via a Chemex.) The spacious cafe is also a great place to work for a few hours between meetings—you'll see plenty of thirtysomethings hunched over MacBooks." - Hannah Wallace

Google
Portland coffee tour cannot be completed without visiting Heart coffee roasters. This is one of the my top tastes in Portland i can pick. Their Honduras, Ethiopia beans are so nice and acidic, flavorful. I can’t wait to taste Honduras Gesha. What a great way to get morning started with a cup of Cardamom latte!! Only downside is there is no branch in SF bay area.

Google
A great “neighborhood” coffee shop with a cool vibe. The pastries are great with lots of lamination in the chocolate croissant that I had. The large latte was tasty from first sip to last. The coffee tastes deeply roasted which is great for the first one of the day, for me at least.

Always love going there for coffee on way to the gorge. I also have their coffee subscription and it never disappoints. Great coffee beans, baked goods, and everyone is so friendly. Great for hanging out there and for a pick up.

Google
I think Heart might have the best coffee in town! I was recently there for a tasting and it was absolutely delicious and a great educational experience. Super kind and friendly staff which is always refreshing in Portland.

In for an early morning (7am😊) cappuccino and espresso ☕️ Opted for the stereo blend Notes of chocolate, nougat, and caramel, crafted with care 👍 Stood at the roll up garage window enjoying my morning sips as the cars roll by Thank you

Google
This was the best cup of coffee that we have ever had! The heart barista’s are amazing- super down to earth and know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to making a well crafted latte or cup of coffee. We each got a latte and a drip coffee and both were amazing! If you’re looking for a coffee that is loaded with sugar and not good - Heart is not the place to go. If you’re looking for an EXCELLENT cup of coffee that is brewed to perfection heart is the perfect place for you!

Google
Best coffee beans ever! Tried Colombia Javier Omar de la Rossa, used my manual grinder and brewed with an aeropress, and it was terrific! Now ordered a sampler pack and just received it: it was literally roasted 4 days ago, wow! Can’t wait to try it! I live in Seattle but still will get my beans from this Portland roastery, you guys are the best!

Google
Heart offers a good experience with their quality house-roasted coffee. The space is comfortable and versatile, suitable for working, relaxing, or socializing. Comfortable seating, some greenery, and a variety of merchandise add to the pleasant atmosphere. However, the lack of WiFi could be inconvenient for those planning to use laptops. Despite this, it's a nice spot for enjoying coffee, thinking, or chatting with friends.

Yelp
Very limited options as far as versatility with coffee, which makes this coffee spot a big turn off . For an example, they don't have a blended ice machine, They only have oat milk. They don't have almond milk. They can only do very select drinks, which I guess makes it a lot simple for them... but when the coffee is not exuberantly great.. it's not something I would drive for or come back to. Coffee does have a unique taste? i dislike and like it at the same time. So overall I would give this a 5.5/10. It does look inviting , and aesthetic inside. I see potential in this place with the right investor. The guys taking the orders are very nice.

Yelp
I've been coming here for ten years and I've always been impressed. This morning, my girlfriend and I had a really bad experience at a different coffee shop. We decided to go hang out at Heart to try to make up for it. The staff (as usual) was warm and welcoming. They invited us to do a cupping where we got to try great coffee, got free stickers, and they even gave us a free bag of coffee because we liked it so much. I will always recommend Heart to my friends and family.

Yelp
This is for the mail order coffee beans. They came to me very dry, very pale, and very small. Are they supposed to be like that? And the taste, while fruity, also had a strong stale taste. But, worst of all, they charge $20 on a good day for a small 16oz bag. I can't say anything about their store's ambiance, nor the service as I haven't contacted them.

Yelp
Quick Summary: - Coffee is slightly sour but not overbearing - Plenty of seats inside the cafe A colleague recommended me this cafe when I asked good coffee places to try in Portland. To where we were staying, this was almost a half day trip, but with public transportation rampant in this city, the trip wasn't tedious. The cafe isn't located in the main parts of Portland, but on the southeast side, more suburb. Inside the cafe is spacious with lots of booths and tables to sit. In the center of the cafe there was the counter to order. We ordered a cafe latte, a pourover, and a coffee cake. Generally, I'm not fond of the sour taste in coffee. While this one did have this flavor, it was faint than most. The mouth feel was lighter and refreshing as well. This paired nicely with the coffee cake, so overall it was a good coffee experience.

Yelp
Very positive visit to Heart Roasters last Friday, what used to be a restaurant years ago, is now home to roasters. I had a cappuccino and it was very well presented in kind of a comfortable space, more business than pleasure with some outdoor seating, hurry then go quick. I purchased some beans from Kenya, yet to try at home. All & All ; The place is a bit cold in decor, but the coffee is hot. Really nice merch and service was knowledgeable and helpful. I will return for sure when I am in this area, this coffee house is better than most in PDX.

Yelp
Great coffee shop! Love the coffee here - try to buy some to bring home! Most coffees are medium to dark roast, but if you prefer lighter roasts, stop by Heart Roasters!

Yelp
Such a cute coffeeshop! It was right near our airbnb. The coffee was great and there was a nice selection of baked goods. Loved the interior of the shop as well; very modern, high ceilings, and a nice spot for a quick break. For more, see Instagram @sipsandsizzles

Yelp
This is a really cute place with lots of seating and great coffee. The baristas were nice and very helpful. It's a perfect place to come and study and or come hangout out with some friends. The only thing is they didn't have soy milk.

Yelp
Per a rec from a friend, I stopped into heart for a cappuccino and couldn't resist a slice of olive oil citrus cake. Staff were friendly and in no time I was set up with my treats, seating at a table alongside folks typing away on their laptops. Coffee was wonderful and the cake was perfect - I am still thinking about it days later and plotting my next visit.

Yelp
Heart is one of my favorite roasters in the US and it's just as good in person. While this looks like it is just a coffee shop spot with no roasting on location it's cozy and the staff is friendly and they have stellar beans I fancy. Cold brew was a winner and the seating area is comfy with a good atmosphere. Top spot for sure when in the area.

Yelp
Cute, trendy coffee spot! I love the vibe of this coffee shop! Hubby and I got iced vanilla lattes half sweet with oatmilk and they made it perfect! We also got the orange olive oil cake and bostock. At first look, the bostock was hard and not soft as I expected. But Wow! It was delicious!! The orange olive oil cake was moist and delicious too!

Yelp
In my opinion, this is the best coffee you'll find in Portland. Typical of a third-wave roaster, Heart take time to understand the best way to roast and brew coffee. Their pastries come from Nuvrei, the best French baker in town, in my opinion. But Heart's cappuccino steals the show every time. Every barista does it so perfectly that this sets the bar for what ALL coffee should be like.

Ari K.

Yelp
Coffee is perfect, beans are great, and pastries are perfection. I got a sourdough chocolate croissant and it was lifechanging. We've been here about 7 times and it always hits. Highly recommend. Cute merch too!

Yelp
It was a unique and delicious coffee shop among the many coffee shops I've tried in Portland. I was expecting a lot because I heard that many coffee shops in Portland were delicious, but for my taste, the coffee shop here was more delicious than other coffee shops.! And barista also very friendly and professional! The atmosphere inside is cute and hip, and if you come to Portland, I highly recommend this coffee shop.!!

Yelp
Don't believe I've had a better cup of coffee than at Heart. I got the cardamom latte and it was perfect. Coffee tastes super smooth and was not too sweet. I could drink a jug of this, but that would probs ruin my stomach. The pop tart that I got was really great as well. Loved the raspberry jam and the flaky texture of the pastry. Honestly don't think you can go wrong with anything here! Space is pretty huge with lots of seats and outdoor seating as well. Baristas were all really nice and gave me recommendations on which beans to get. Must stop if you're in Portland looking for amazing, no gimmicks coffee.

Yelp
Everything I like in a coffee shop, clean environment, friendly staff,, and of course great coffee. I always want more food offerings but understand why coffee shops limit this so no big deal.

Yelp
while heart might have not been my #1 absolute favorite roaster i visited on the great portland coffee tour of summer 2022, the folks working there were the most kind and helpful in allowing me to experience their coffee. what fun. i was intrigued by their coffee slushie (not my usual vibe at all, but when in rome, right?) when the guy in front of my ordered one with great fanfare, but i was suggested to stick to my usual (an oat milk cortado) to get a good apples-to-apples comparison. and to kick it up a notch, they offered to pull my drink as a one-and-one, a double shot split in two, one as espresso, one as cortado to let me get the full flavor. i played along, pretending i'd been given that treatment before, but in all my tasting, i've never had a shop offer that, and it was absolutely perfect and classy as hell. they also gave me a soda back, so while i had my hands full walking out the door, it was absolutely a stunning way to sip. full flavor. they even offered me a drip sip of that same roast, but i didn't want to overdo the caffeine for the day. they were super helpful in picking out a bag of beans for me to take home, and just all around really nice. thanks, guys! i'll be back!!

Sama J.

Yelp
This place was amazing they had the best latte I have had since moving here a year ago. Truly delicious. They let me try cardamom which I hadn't had previously in a small espresso cup the latte was truly delicious and they were so sweet and hospitable I will be back for sure!

Yelp
Coffee was good. Baristas were nice. Atmosphere was great. Lots of people hanging out and working. Enough folks talking that it wasn't too quiet or too loud to have a conversation. Recommend.

Yelp
Sooo good!! Coffee was magic. I've been a long time fan of Heart Coffee - it's consistently delicious! I order their coffee beans online for my home brewing. So to visit their coffee shop in Portland was definitely a highlight of our trip. There was a long line, but they were hustling and getting our orders to us quickly. Drink menu was pretty standard from what you find at specialty coffee shops - which I enjoy. We got coffee, cappuccino, and a bag of coffee. Baristas were so kind and almost ethereal- if that makes sense :). A few tables scattered around for people to sit and chat. Loved the large space and a few historical pictures on the wall from their beginning days. Stop by for sure :)!!! And it's walking distance from other tasty restaurants as well.

Yelp
Great place and great coffee. The vibe was right. Price was a bit steep. Love their coffee cups and dishes as they all have a HEART logo on them. Very cute.

Yelp
Lots of seating, friendly baristas, amazing coffee selection! Even when it was busy our wait time was very low, these guys know what's up. We came on Xmas for a coffee since nothing else was open and everyone was super nice. Def a fav place to go on east side. One of the few places I really notice a difference in quality in the coffee from going to other cafes around town.

Yelp
Another excellent cappuccino in a very deep sea of excellent coffee makers in Portland.

Yelp
Although I think I probably should have tempered my expectations a bit, I was pretty disappointed in the two bags of single origin coffee I brewed up from Heart roasters. Inconsistent and metallic tasting is how I'd describe my two bags. Like many aficionados, I have a coffee routine; or maybe you can call it a ritual: Burr grinder, pour over, filtered water, special kettle for that good temp over 195F, etc. The good side effect of such a ritual is that I can brew a consistent cup of coffee assuming the beans are good. I'd rate the Kenya Gachuiro AA as the better of the single origin roasts on offer here; but, the real disappointment was the Ethiopia Yukro. Overall, the taste of the Ethiopia Yukro was unpleasant mostly due to a metallic aftertaste--this sometimes is the result of an underdeveloped roast or older coffee beans. Perhaps I should have expected this given the overly earthy smell beforehand. I tried different waters (even bottled water), different grind sizes, and did my usual ritual a few different mornings. Overall, given the price of single origin beans these days, I wouldn't recommend these two mediocre coffees from Heart. It could have been just my experience but metallic tasting single origin beans are no good in my view. Sadly, I had heard good things about Heart and I've stopped in on trips to PDX but they still are no challenger to my usual favorite single origin roasters like Verve. Even more of a letdown was the price of my bad experience: 26.00$ for the Ethiopia Yukro and 29.00$ for the Kenya.

Yelp
Dropped by Heart Roasters for a quick coffee on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was! I got my go to drink which is an iced vanilla latte and it was overall great -- the coffee flavor was deep and robust, though a taaad bit too acidic for my flavor. But otherwise, really good flavor. Service was helpful and friendly and parking the area isn't too bad. The only downside I see would be the price. I understand that quality coffee requires more time/effort but regardless this was stretching towards the high end of my personal budget for a small latte. Swing by if you're in the area for a good cup of coffee! Or pick up some beans to make your own at home~

Yelp
What a warm and inviting coffee shop mixing up great tunes and serving delicious drinks. All pre-covid of course, so make sure to check for details on shop policies. And always great to take it to go as well. First, their shop is large with tons of space. Next, the music is great and the songs eclectic. Their coffee is made with precision and care. I ordered the honey cardamom which was delightful. The stereo blend and different roasts are a must have if traveling from out of town or as a nice thank you gift to a pet sitter.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles and this has to be one of the least favorite coffee place in Portland. Service: 4/5 Coffee: 2/5 Ambiance: 1/5 Coffee is not very good. Super expensive. $5.25 for bad cappuccino :( The espresso was super bitter. I really don't have much to say, I never leave my cappuccino but I had to leave today. Milk was steamed pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend getting an espresso drink here.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon Heart while dropping a vehicle off for service. Great ambiance, wide open, warehouse feel, consistently busy but not over crowded. Had the Cardamom latte, $5.50, 12 oz. they make their own flavoring, one of the best all time in my book. Also had a berry score, fair to good. Check it out, you won't be sorry!
google avatar

Britainie L.

Yelp
Always up for great coffee but this was far from great. My vanilla latte tasted below average. The coffee tasted sour and I am sure that's not how it's suppose to be. The same happened with my friends hazelnut latte. Unsure as to what happened, but I would not come back here for coffee.
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
I liked the coffee but I think I had higher expectations. Got a flat white and wished the milk had a sweeter, more velvety taste. Still had a great experience though. Friends loved their lattes, baristas were kind & friendly, and the seating area was nice and spacious. If I were to come back, I'd love to try one of their drinks iced!

Yelp
Heart Coffee is significant in my life, even if it was just for the duration of the drink. I am soon to be Mrs. Hart, the morning after my Fiancé proposed to me while I was in the shower, he walked to this coffee spot and bought me a Heart latte. It's the simple thoughtfulness for me. Perfect latte! So good, give it a try and don't you dare step foot into a Starbucks while in Portland.
google avatar

Yelp
Heart Roasters was a great find and actually on my bookmarks to try for some great Portland coffee while I was in town. Luckily for me, I opened up my trusty Yelp app while waiting in line for Screen Door and found that Heart was literally at the end of the block. It's a short walk and hard to miss. There are bright, orange chairs located outside on the sidewalk, but inside is filled with seating too. Love that it's a casual environment, great for catching up with friends or if you're just there to enjoy your cup, and it wasn't overly noisy where you couldn't get any work done. Simple class menu with coffee, espressos, cold brew, and some of their specials list: heart drinking chocolate, honey cardamon latte, drip coffees, and plates of delicious pastries up at the counter. I opted for their honey cardamon latte and the heart drinking chocolate. Great presentation and love that my drink was decently sized. The presentation was cute with foam heart design (of course). The drink itself wasn't too bitter and the beans they used was not too dark. It wasn't an overwhelming taste of espresso that made you wish you put sweetener. It was a perfect balance of foamy milk, a hint of cardamon, and espresso. Heard some great things once I got home from my trip and got a couple of thumbs up that I went and tried Heart. It's not just your typical hipster coffee shop, but they actually have quality beans and serve cold brew. Add that to your list of caffeine highs if you're visiting!

Yelp

Yelp
Portland has an amazing coffee scene and Heart Roasters is one of my favorite contributors. We accidentally ran into this place on our way to brunch at Screen Door and because the wait time was about 1.5h we decided to go back and have a coffee while we waited. The place inside is very third wave with a lot of seating and natural light. The coffee they serve is roasted to perfection and the barista skills are excellent (perfectly steamed milk, latte art - the whole package). The service we had was always on point. When we were there they brought the coffee to us, so please keep this in mind when tipping your barista. They have a fairly large selection of pastries, and obviously I went for the croissant. Croissant & Latte is a match made in Heaven. When I'm back in Portland I will definitely stop by!

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
While some people are saying it's snobby, I am from nyc so everything is snobby here. This was on par with nyc and bk. So I felt at home hah! I got a 20 dollar ground coffee that was black (forget the name, had cocoa in it) not the fruity kind. It came with a free 8 oz cup of coffee that was good. It was overpriced for the coffee bag but it was nice it came with a coffee at least. They dont charge extra if you want to put oat milk in your black coffee. That's a plus these days. The prices were on par with sf, nyc etc.
google avatar

Nikki S.

Yelp
Okay but could be better. I didn't try their actual coffee drinks, I know not fair judging without trying one caffeinated drink. Had the iced matcha. It was good and I liked how they can make it unsweetened. Had a sip of the golden milk latte. Been seeing the turmeric latte craze and you know it's actually pretty good. This one was light on the spices like I barely could tell (this was good as an introduction to turmeric lattes). But it would be better warmer.... it was a temperature than I can drink right away. Overall, simplistic menu with its minimalistic design. Okay flavors but nothing I will run back for.

Yelp
For me, Heart is in my Top 3 coffee spots in Portland. Friendly staff, and always has fresh gear. Can't wait to make this my new go-to cup.

Yelp
They became my favorite coffee roaster in 2019 and I visited them again last weekend, and they still take pride on what they are doing. They have great service and one of the best coffees! I wish you guys open a place in Seattle ..

Yelp
First place I went when I arrived in Portland. I absolutely love their coffee! Customer service was excellent! I had taken an Uber there from the airport and realized I needed a less expensive option. The barista helped me figure out how to download the app for the bus and buy a day pass. He was very nice! Great place to hang out on a rainy Portland day!

Kim E.

Yelp
Great cold brew! Staff was very friendly and service was great. I highly recommend this coffee roaster!!

Cadman C.

Yelp
Monday, June 6th 1:18pm. I normally go to Heart Roasters on the west side, downtown. When I walk thru those doors a grey day turns all sunshine. The barista's over there are sweet, kind and welcoming. That is not the case with the east side location. Two of the most negative people, a man and a woman behind the counter. It felt like energy was sucked from me. Besides that, the normally amazing cup of coffee that I always talk up was burnt, and it almost felt purposely over heated. I wish this place could live up to the expectations created by the team on the west side.
google avatar

Maria N.

Yelp
We got a regular coffee and a matcha latte. The regular coffee was a dark roast with bold aromatic flavors. The matcha latte was good, but lacked some sweetness to it. It was very milky.
google avatar

Khoi T.

Yelp
Great coffee in a minimalist and open floor design. For coffee, you can choose from the following: coffee, espresso, americano, macchiato, cappuccino, latte, vanilla latte, mocha, or a cold brew. There's the option to substitute the milk with their house made walnut/almond milk for an addition $1.50. Pastries and cookies are available for purchase to pair with or complement your coffee. You can get various croissants, brioches or cookies, and I highly recommend the flourless chocolate chip. It's got a nice crust, but the inside is soft and as you approach the center, it gets very gooey, which is perfection for a cookie. There's also a lot of chocolate flavor, but it's not rich, heavy or overpowering. For drinks, I'm a fan of their mocha. The mocha is very dark and rich but it's easily drinkable. It's not as bitter as other places, opting to strike a fine balance between bitterness and sweetness. The latte art on top of the drink is very pronounced due to the vast contrast in color between the dark brown of the coffee and the crisp white of the steamed milk. The vanilla latte was good, but the vanilla flavor was very subtle and could easily go undetected by a majority of palates. The service was friendly and the drinks were made to order, so expect a bit of a wait. There is a good amount of seating, but it's not overly abundant. Large garage doors retrofitted with glass serve as windows to bring in plenty of natural lighting. You can also purchase beans to take home and brew from the comfort of your kitchen, but it can be difficult to truly smell the aroma of the beans because the package is so well sealed.
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
I'm in line to order, and the girl behind the counter is just having a conversation with the people who just ordered. It's been going on for minutes. There's a long line, and it seems as though it doesn't exist.

Gary P.

Yelp
Received my stereo blend coffee today and I noticed it was roasted over a year previous to me obtaining it. Good coffee, but not freshly roasted. See photo.

Yelp
Like many other visitors, my friends and I stumbled upon Heart Roasters while waiting for brunch at the Screen Door. First of all, I'm totally digging their minimalist design, from the marble counter tops to the white tile backsplash. It was sunny when we went and I loved how they had the windows rolled up. :) Heart had a few pastries in their display case, and I ended up getting a latte and berry brioche as a quick snack. Oh. My. Gosh. I swear that brioche was one of the best that I've tasted. It had just the right amount of tang from the berries, and the bread was delicately firm on the outside with a sweet, soft interior. According to the barista, the brioche is typically only available on the weekend, so I highly recommend you try it if you can! The latte was also on point with a strong and clean taste. As Heart is a roaster, their beans are available for purchase. I'm glad we were able to stumble upon this hidden gem!

Yelp
Great place to chill on your laptop, people watch, and of course drink some coffee. I got a small 8oz mocha which costs $5. To be honest, it is a little pricey for me as the cup is incredibly small but it tastes delicious so I can't complain. Every cup also has latte art and they are so cute!! I adore latte art and this is definitely a place to check out if you do, too. Also a great place to stop by if you're in line to go eat at Screen Door! It is at the end of the block, less than 5 minute walk!

Yelp
I would venture to say that this is the best coffee I've ever had! I tried the other highly reviewed coffee spots in Portland after but this was still the winner! Bags are expensive (19/lb) but I brought home a bag of Stereo that I'm excited to try. The baristas said it also works as a strong drip coffee (in addition to espresso).
