On the Grid : Heath Ceramics

"The first location outside of their home in Sausalito for the now-famous ceramics shop. Putting outthe finest quality in dish-ware and tile for fine restaurants and discriminating peeps alike. The brick & mortar store has been here as long as we can remember, and it's a lovely space. Head in to be inspired and you might even drop a few hundred on some new cups." - One Long House

"A true mid-century American icon, Heath has been producing beautiful modern and minimal tableware (with a brief break) and tiles since 1948. In fact, it's part of the permanent collections in New York's MoMA—and graces many a table across the Los Angeles restaurant scape. The store, like the products, is modern and minimal, with wooden shelves, concrete floors and a lot of space to browse. Besides the Heath line, they've selected a handful of designers to showcase. There are multiple locations in the SF area, including an outpost in the Ferry Building—the factory store in Sausalito offers seconds (i.e., subtly imperfect plates and bowls) at big discounts."

"Once you’re at Tartine Manufactory, you’re practically legally obligated to visit theHeath Ceramicsfactory and store in the same building. Who doesn't like high-end ceramics and home items? Even if you aren't looking for anything it's great to browse and look at all the amazing items. They have a design center area where you can try table settings ideas out. Lots of unique items, staff very friendly. For Covid, everyone must use the hand sanitizer on entry. Street parking, no lot.

I bought back a mug I had bought on Saturday as the handle snapped off, and it was clearly a processing fault. The shop assistant tried to make out I had accidentally ‘banged it’ which I hadn’t and then tried to say I wasn’t washing it correctly? It’s a mug - you need to wash it! There was no sign I had chipped or smashed the mug and I’m not so cheap I feel the need to break an item and then drive across town to swap it out. I returned it because the item was faulty. She wouldn’t swap it out until I put my foot down and said I felt a $46 mug should last longer than 3 months. She begrudgingly went to her manager who agreed to swap it out but she was clearly ‘put out’. She passive aggressively wrapped the mug in paper and thrust it at me without a word? Sorry, is it your company profit being affected? No. How about this ‘ I’m sorry you had to experience and bring the item back. Please accept this replacement and Happy Holidays’. I get this is a high end ceramics shop but please, reign in the attitude and become a customer service focused business and treat your customers with more respect and courtesy. I’ve had more polite and respectful service at TJ Max….

Google
I love Heath Ceramics. They create beautiful and durable plates and bowls that I use every day. I’ve been slowly adding to my collection as the pieces are a bit pricey (but worth it). The shop in LA is night and airy, and allows you to pick out the style that best fits your design aesthetic. If you order online for shipping, they pack everything exceptionally well. Definitely recommend!

Google
I've always enjoyed Heath Ceramics to just dream that one day I can purchase pieces from this carefully curated California home design store. I have yet to venture to their SF/Bay Area location. I enjoy my visit here at Heath on Beverly

Google
Huge variation in tile length, width, plus banana-shaping (when they should be rectangular) makes tiling with Heath tiles a real challenge. They all have to be individually sorted after you’ve received them. Disinterest from Heath when issues raised.

One of the most beautiful stores in all of Los Angeles.

Google
The best home goods store in California, classic ceramic plates, bowls, mugs, etc, timeless and great quality. The people who work here are really kind and helpful. The knives and cutlery are excellent and its a real pleasure to use their goods every day.

Google
Amazing customer service. I received a teapot as a gift but it was missing the handle, which rendered it useless. Customer support sent me a handle free of charge and now the teapot is functional. I'm a fan and will be looking at other stuff to buy!

Yelp
I initially came to this store because I was looking for unique and high-quality table ware for my home cooking. I like to photograph my cooking and showcase it in the best possible way. The other day I came in and discovered some unique food items. I really like smoky flavors and I picked up this great Woodfire Salt they carry. They have some great stuff here and I always find something unique to buy.

Yelp
Our friend Bret H. turned 40 this year, and a bunch of us decided to get him a group gift. We had no idea what to get him, so I asked his wife FeiFei J., who made a few devastatingly practical suggestions, but also mentioned that they could use a serving bowl to go with the rest of their kitchenware. I'm also on this side of 35, so I love pretty home shit and decided this was the way to go. FeiFei told me they got their plates and bowls from Heath Ceramics, which is based in L.A. I don't know anything about ceramics, but I liked what I saw on the website and picked out a serving platter and large serving bowl in opaque white, as well as a London Plane cutting board. I placed the order online and noticed that the store was near my house, and that pick-up would save us shipping and let me see some nice ceramics in person. I got an email notification once the order arrived, and was given a two-week pick-up window. I was pleased to find the shop right next door to Urban Pet, even sharing a free parking lot (I picked up 50 pounds of dog food while I was there). The place was extremely attractive, well stocked with beautiful ceramics and other home goods. My order was ready to go, but I spent some time browsing the displays before one of the very nice staff members carried the box to my car. Matt B. and I have been considering buying new dishware, and there's a decent chance we'll copy Bret and FeiFei and get in on some Heath Ceramics.

Yelp
As a ceramic enthusiast, I was excited to visit the store. My sister and I were greeted warmly by a sales associate. We perused the various sections of the store, but then we were followed by another sales associate after we picked up several items to admire them closer. She followed within 6 feet us and rearranged all the items we had picked up. Why did she choose to follow us? Was it the athleisure wear? Was it something else? Admiring ceramics should not turn into a display of racial injustice. Regardless - her behavior made me feel disrespected, distrusted, and uncomfortable. I was too enraged to confront this sales associate so I called later to speak to the manager. He heard me out and stated he would follow up with a phone call. I also wrote a formal complaint to customer service. This sales associate needs to learn basic manners and practice her customer service skills.

Yelp
16MAR2017 We saw some of Heath's tiles (kitchen, bathroom) in a Sunset magazine design house here in Denver. We are re-doing our kitchen and wanted some pop in the backsplash. Contacted Heath about Dwell patterns and colors. Aline Cautis gave us lots of good advice and sent samples so we could make a more informed decision. We are about to order 46 sqft of tile and are excited to see it installed in our "new" kitchen.

Yelp
Thrilled to have a brick and mortar place to see and buy in person. Store is large, well laid out and they sell cheaper seconds (pieces with small flaws) here too. The store seems to attract a mix of customers from newbies browsing, casual buyers looking for gifts to longtime buyers filling a gap in their collection or buying tile. And the sales people who are friendly seem to give people space to wander or help accordingly. But the product is amazing and so glad it continues to survive in its pure form - it's not cheap but could cost a lot more given its craftsmanship (made in California) and significance to modern design history (and therefore collectibility). Despite many knock offs and similar iterations from more or less expensive brands, there's a reason why Heath is so iconic - it's the perfect balance of form and function. Very ergonomic, substantial and weighty in the hand without being heavy, Glazes have depth and complexity, but clean easily and are highly resistant to chipping. Practical enough to use for every day but beautiful enough for company. It makes a simple meal look photogenic but not fussy. Mixing and matching the different lines can help meet your various needs (eg chez panisse side bowl is good for pasta and stews, rim line plates are great as raised edge prevents food from sliding around, rimline bowls and mugs are thick and keep food or liquids warm, coupe line is the most elegant yet still practical - the bowls can be deceiving in size - they can contain a large volume of food.) My only caveat is that their dish ware is designed more for western food than Asian - which requires lighter, deeper bowls that you can hold or lift up in one hand and scoop and shovel from (eg for plain rice, ramen, medium portion bimbimbap type rice bowls, etc). But as a lot of Edith Heath's glazes were inspired by Japanese and Chinese ceramics, it's not difficult to incorporate Asian dishware along side her serving pieces.

Yelp
Excellent quality mugs and plates. Love the David mellor utensils and knives. My favorite store for tableware.

Yelp
Great selection of seemingly well-crafted goods and the staff were super friendly. We didn't purchase anything this time around, but I expect we will in the future! There's a great selection of hand-made ceramic dishes, home goods, furniture, books, and just about everything in between. A great place to check out if you haven't stopped in before!

Yelp
Heath Ceramics is my happy place. The vibes are zen and peaceful; and the customer service is warm, inviting, and truly helpful. The carefully curated selection of ceramics and other homeware is absolutely beautiful and stunning. Their products may be on the pricier side, but the quality and timelessness of kitchen/dinnerware last a lifetime. Treat yourself!

Yelp
I am absolutely crazy about Heath ceramics. There are so many beautiful things there. This was my first time at this specific location, but I was very impressed with the helpfulness of the staff. The location isn't as large as the San Francisco one we used to shop at, but it is still a nice size with a large selection of things. Yes, the ceramics are unbelievable, but don't miss the wooden stools, cutting boards, table runners... Shopping at and even visiting the store I take as a rare treat because I barely leave my section of LA, but I just discovered that it is very close to my dentist, so I will officially start getting my teeth cleaned every other month just so I can stop in and get a couple things each time. Because getting two things per visit is completely manageable! I have my eye on about 20 things, so I have to pace it out. Parking - some people used the lot of the pet store next door, but we did metered street parking. They seem to allow dogs as well. I was a little worried that it might be a tight squeeze with our stroller, but there was plenty of room to navigate the entire store. We ended up just parking it in a corner and carrying the baby.

Yelp
Heath Ceramics is one of the few remaining mid-century American potteries still in existence today. They have been producing beautiful modern, minimalist style tableware and tile since 1948 in Sausalito, California. Heath ceramics are in permanent collections in MoMA in NY as well as being used in some of the finest restaurants in the US. Over the weekend, Heath Ceramics Studio & Store opened its doors in Mid-City LA. Being big fans of mid-century modern ceramics & pottery, my husband and I had to go check it out. The store is spacious, modern and minimal, with concrete floor and wood shelves, designed to showcase the beautiful Heath pieces - it almost feels like you are viewing works of art on display. Heath pieces reflect the perfect balance of form and function. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they will answer any questions you may have about their pieces. A great place to learn, to browse, to shop for yourself or to pick up gifts for the special people on your list! Hours are 11am-7pm daily; street/metered parking available along Beverly Blvd and side streets.

Yelp
Christyl and I came in here a few months ago after having breakfast at BLD (which was excellent BTW) but it was the reason for our early morning trek into LA from the IE (otherwise know as B*F*E) I had read an article some time ago in Sunset Magazine about their pottery and since I love to collect unique pottery bowls and also give as gifts, I had bookmarked this location to stop in and browse. This is a really neat shop and have plenty of items to peruse including books, silverware, plates etc all unique gift ideas. I have to admit I discovered that day that my preferences leans towards fire glazed vs. rough surface looking pottery. Hence! I didn't purchase anything but I might return for some unique silverware, glasses or pillows! :) Respectfully Reviewed

Yelp
The most sophisticated, tasteful dishes ever. I love this place! Plus, there are gifts and housewares... hard to find anymore in LA anymore.... must be the high rents. You can basically do all your Christmas shopping here or come in for a last minute gift. The staff is so freakin' nice! They are helpful and not pushy at all. In fact, a salesperson has actually talked me out of buying something, telling me about a warranty from the manufacturer that I should take advantage of instead! They're so cool. Yes, it's a bit pricey but you buy a piece here and there and you'll have it forever. Well worth it, in my opinion. So go here and check this place out!

Yelp
Amazing place:) This place makes me happy and makes GOOD vibes!!! Especially the simple design with soft colors ...deserves the price

Yelp
We've been going to Heath Ceramics for several years now for little trinkets here and there, but today we've had a really positive experience researching for tiles. Marie (sp?), who introduced herself as a newer employee, took us through a neat system of specs and how to pick the right tiles. When she wasn't 100% sure about something she double-checked with Nick "the tile expert", who kindly helped make sure we got everything right. When it comes to tiles, there's no question Heath Ceramics has the best of the best, but shopping at Los Angeles showroom is a joy thanks to Marie and Nick.

Yelp
I have driven by Heath Ceramics literally thousands of times over the years but until late last month never took the time to walk in this beautiful showroom. Missing out is putting it lightly - this wonderful institution (since 1946 I understand), offers truly the finest in artistic creations in pottery and ceramic. As I needed a special gift to take abroad, something that had some sort of association with Los Angeles, I decided to stop in. First and foremost the selection of unique items is exceptional, from tableware to decorative accessories, furniture, glassware, and some of the most amazing tiles I've ever seen. To put it mildly I was quite ready to haul half of their inventory home with me, but somehow I managed a bit of restraint and focused on the gift at hand. In the end I chose what they considered an "imperfect" vase that I found to be exceptionally perfect. Evidently the glaze was not up to snuff so it was slightly discounted. Goes to show you how dedicated they are to producing the finest product possible. I was thrilled with my purchase, as was the recipient of the lovely item. Prices are commensurate with the quality of the work and well worth the cost. My only disappointment was with the staff. For some reason I expected an interesting group of artistic individuals ready to share the Heath tradition with me, but instead found what I deemed to be a typical cold, very LA-type attitude as if they are doing me a favour by assisting me. Such disinterest is always a disappointment and a detriment, however I'm not gracing stores to make best friends, merely shop. However, service is also part of the whole package and I wish their service equaled the quality of the workmanship. Nonetheless, even with the attitude I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Came for the Studio Mug, stayed for the pop-up farmers market! What a wonderful surprise. The Heath pottery is excellent, and as other reviewers have mentioned, there's a very nicely curated collection of other items. Books, children's items, furniture, etc. etc. It also happens that the first Saturday of the month also features an in-store farmers market! On the pricey side, but worth a look and a visit for the occasional splurge.

Yelp
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Purchased a few things from here and can't wait to get more. Just really beautiful, and the finishes are lovely. My mother ordered via phone and the staff was so friendly. They even invited her to visit them when she's in California!

Yelp
Here 15 minutes without so much as a hello! Don't think I'm purchasing anymore Heath! BS! The store is NOT BUSY AT ALL!!! I gave it another five minutes, and still nothing! A simple hello can I help you would have been great. I've needed to replenish my Heath dish set for a little while now because things have been broken over the years. Unfortunately, right now I'm so peeved I can't spend my here! My plan was to get a few more serving platters, bread plates, two bowls for my puppies' kibbles and h2o, but NOW....NO! Disappointed!

Annie L.

Yelp
Seems like two months ago someone complained that she didn't get so much as a "Can I help you?" when she entered the store. Now it seems as if the staff has been whipped senseless into asking and asking and asking whether you are looking for something or need help or need help in finding something or are here for a particular reason. They hover like zombies that don't really care but are being forced to constantly engage the customer. I have supported Heath for many decades and eat off her plates and bowls but since the company was bought out I have had to deal with pushy sales people in the tile department who kept trying to sell me a design without understanding my fireplace situation, and now salespeople that act like they are in horror movie.

Yelp
Someone beat me to the first review! He he! I visited yesterday and picked up some everyday china for our home. My husband and I had spent the first 5/1/2 years of our marriage trying to figure out what everyday china would suit both of us. We found the solution at Heath Ceramics. After a friend registered for her wedding at Heath Ceramics I've been on the Heath Ceramics webpage countless times in two months and was so excited to hear that the LA store was opening so I made sure we made it for opening weekend! We both finally agreed on the aqua/brown coupe line of everyday china. It's not cheap, so we bought four plates, four bowls, and a serving bowl. The serving bowl was second and I couldn't even tell the difference! We can really make this stuff work for us and I love that's it mid century modern which works great with my little Post War 1950 house in Lakewood. If you are ever in LA, or even better Sausalito check out their stores and factory (at the latter). This stuff lasts forever. My friend's parents have had their Rim line plates, cups, bowls, etc. for over 30 years and she's never had any problems with breakage or it cracking. I also agree with everything the prior poster had to say about the store and their staff. Just want to add that we did park in the adjacent parking lot next to the pet store and weren't cited (I think that lot is reserved for the pet store). Also kind of silly, but the alley behind the store is full of pot holes, and rather bumpy so I don't suggest driving down it if you have your new china in your car (ours was fine).

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place the other day when I was in the area. Great space. Very clean and organized and an inviting shopping experience. Prices aren't cheap but the quality is high and items are grouped in an aesthetic manner. They have an on site in house potter/artist. They don't offer classes but a place down the street that isn't affiliated with them does. The shop has a variety of items from books, napkins, balsamic vinegar, wooden bowls, to glassware. I bought a cute vintage looking single carafe juice jar that I might use for flowers. Will definitely be back in the future!

Yelp
I think Ray Eames is Heath's Spirit Guide! As a Northern Cal child, I spent part of my adolescence tripping out on my father's 1950's Heath ashtray and the psychadelic glaze on the family casserole. It is so great to rediscover Heath and its many facets as a sober adult. This store is more than just the jaw-dropping amazing Heath tile, it has a.. well... curated array of complimentary housewares. I especially love their cook book collection, the glassware and table linens. There is style and a sense of fun in every item here. I think Ray Eames is Heath's Spirit Guide! It wouldn't be surprised to see her emerge from a tile covered time travel machine near the kiln. I wish I could get married again, just to register here!

Yelp
I absolutely love the pottery and dishware and that is what it's about....BUT this is a long and overdue complaint about the customer service. My entire line of dishware for 12 is outfitted with Heath Ceramics I have collected over the years. I would say I have only had 1 or 2 good experiences with the salespeople there. The norm is snobby, sarcastic, impatient, and eye rolling types. I really wish Heath would focus more on customer service and hiring genuinely kind people, versus artsy, too cool for school types. I guess at least I know what to expect when I go there.

E. E.

Yelp
Nice, modern and clean ceramic designs. The linens from Commune are some of my favorite items. I'm giving them an average rating only because my family and I stopped in there a few weeks ago and were followed like we were potential thieves. Everywhere we stepped, the female employee would strategically (and obviously) place herself a few feet away so she could see the hands of whichever family member she was trailing. Even, and almost comically standing next to a wall without creating a reason just to get a better view. We were being watched like hawks. Creepy. Rude. Uninviting. Upon entering the store, she wasn't very friendly when we greeted her and even less so when I asked her a question with the intention of breaking the ice. I'm a local, I've been here many times and I brought my sister here that day so she could buy something to take back to her home in Canada. The employee's obvious mistrust in the customer or paranoia in regards to inventory loss was an absolute turn off so I collected my family and headed out the door because there was no way we were going to reward such suspicion with an expensive purchase. Get it together, Heath Ceramics. Even if you have a high theft rate, that's no reason to assume that everyone is walking into your store with the intention to steal.

J Z.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff. Great events. Beautiful space. Thank you for being open on Sundays. Wonderful that you can get seconds here, though the Sausalito shop is still better for seconds and samples.

Janet W.

Yelp
Avoid Rim Line place settings, unless you like stained looking dishes. We purchased 6 place settings a few years ago. We have used them just a few times, because the unglazed rims take on oil from food and utensils. They look unclean! I just called the Los Angeles store for assistance. I was told that the stains will even out over time OR I can rub the rims with mineral oil. Right? That way they will look uniformly dirty. Very dissatisfied with this product that came at a pretty penny.

Yelp
I love the color and feel of these hand made tiles. I got several sample tiles and brought them home to view on site.

Yelp
I love this place - quality goods made in California and many tasteful finds. The staff has been very helpful and patient in helping me select and personalize my dish/serving sets. Thanks guys!

Yelp
Heath, to me, represents all things that are right in the world - and they sure know how to throw an epic opening party! The staff are committed to helping - from table styling to color selection to coordination; one talented saleswoman spent over an hour with me alone, helping to color match about a million small groupings of bud vases for a photo shoot. The play area for children is a welcome retreat for my three-year-old son and they're never precious about him admiring the ceramics either. We're so lucky to have Heath as a pillar of style, environment, and good work right here in LA!

S L.

Yelp
This is my happy place in LA. Beautiful ceramics and other kitchenware pieces that could be incorporated into any household. Lovely salespeople who are helpful and enthusiastic making this a fun place to pop into. Also love the story behind Heath!

Kevin W.

Yelp
After nearly a year of having our Heath dishes and bowls, we are just as satisfied as the day we purchased them. They don't have any scratch marks from using silverware on them, which was a problem with a lot of maufacturers. It's difficult to find consumables made here in the United States, that also led to our descision to purchase from Heath.
