Hidden gem for Mexican food in South Austin. Starting off with the atmosphere, it’s a very small restaurant but cozy in my opinion with a great selection of music. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas and it’s always a hit or miss whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant (almost a miss every single time) but these were extremely good. Husband ordered the cochinita pibil plate and it was very juice and tender. Refried beans and rice were on point as well. He accompanied the plate with organic homemade blue corn tortillas and they were great too. Overall a great experience. Food tasted very home made and from scratch. Will definitely come back.

Google
We live in the area and came in for dinner. We really enjoyed our food but some of the chips were a little stale and the salsa portion was very small. The enchiladas and churros were excellent and we’ll be back!

Google
What a delightful restaurant! Pictured is the cauliflower Bunuelos de Coliflor, after we had already dug in. This sweet spot is owned and operated by the family who are attentive and incredibly personable. The salsa is some of the best in town. Do yourself a favor and try this place out! The soup of the day was cream of mushroom with poblano and was delicious.

Google
I ordered fajitas to go and while there were decent, i got a side of pico de gallo that tastes really old and disgusting, so no, not fresh.

Shannon Ture

Google
The clientele are quite different from the people who serve them. I don't think the servers eat this food because it is really bad. For example, the salsa tastes like unsalted, canned tomato with a bit of tobasco sauce, and the chips are flavorless. The rice and beans are also bland. I have a hard time paying for food at with places like this. I didn't enjoy it at all.

Google
This joint deserves every star it has....Service was excellent....as soon as the salsa hit the table, we knew it was going to be a great visit. Everything we had was delicious and are planning a return trip to try some different menu items. Very good find!

Google
I ordered fajitas for one through GrubHub tonight and am posting this review because I’m thoroughly disappointed in what I received. See photo. For $18 I got about two ounces of steak. A half cup of bad rice and some very old pico de gallo. Never ordering here again.

I wish I had read the reviews before visiting this restaurant—everything makes sense now. It seems they tend to add surprise upcharges that are never mentioned. My husband, two kids, and I visited today. While we enjoyed our meal and found the service attentive, we were completely blindsided by extra charges our server failed to inform us about. We had estimated that our meal, including tip, would cost around $70. To our surprise, the final bill was $115, tip included. It wasn’t just the cost that upset us—it was the lack of transparency. For instance, I’ve never been to a Mexican restaurant that charges extra for choosing corn tortillas over flour tortillas. I ended up paying over $8 for corn tortillas, completely unaware that they were “special” or “homemade” and came with an additional cost. Had I known, I would’ve happily stuck with the flour tortillas. After paying, I politely explained the situation to the manager. Unfortunately, his response was disappointing. He simply mentioned that he had already spoken to the servers about explaining these charges, but made no effort to resolve the issue or take responsibility for the restaurant’s mistake. He even pointed out that the server had undercharged us for a change to my child’s meal—again, something we were never informed about. Instead of addressing the problem, the manager seemed more concerned with the server’s error than with making sure we felt valued as customers. Because of this experience, we won’t be returning. It’s not about the money or the food—it’s the lack of consideration for the customer that left a bad taste in our mouths.

Yelp
Great food! The nicest people with the best atmosphere. It is the neighborhood Mexican location

James H.

Yelp
First because it is a neighborhood restaurant, we walked to dinner and my route was shorter than my wife's choice to the meal by 6 minutes. So my Mole Poblano Pork Shank with black beans & rice was extra good. I celebrated with the La Hecho's Margarita with Tequila of the Centenario on the rocks & salt. My young daughter managed to break her child proof cup of milk and the staff was quick & attentive. The place after all these years still has the mojo for tasty authentic dishes.

Holly T.

Yelp
Very authentic Mexican food nestled in a small strip mall- easy and free parking. What a nice find! The margaritas were good but the sangria had an unexpected ( and not listed ) ingredient- spicy tajin. I don't like spice and I didn't care for the seasoning. Kinda ruined the sangria I was expecting just fyi. The food was good and authentic- loved the quesadillas!! Our young server was lovely, and artwork on the walls were for sale and very good.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
We went before heading to a show downtown. There is parking on site. The atmosphere is very casual. The frozen margaritas are really good. They are served in metal cups and stayed chilly the whole time we were there. The salsa is really great and has just the right amount of kick. We had the queso flameado. It is served with tortillas. Don't get this confused with classic queso, which is thinner and meant for chips. This is thick, cheesy, and oh so good! I could honestly eat it with a spoon. The staff is attentive and were prompt with our food. They do have Tequila tasting events quarterly, I believe, so I am hope to catch one of those events sometime!

Arunima G.

Yelp
Good ambiance. Cute decor. Food was good. Not too spicy. Ground beef burrito not the best.

I.W. R.

Yelp
Came in here Thursday the 15th before close. Ordered my food over the phone. I walked to the point of sale with the bartender. She runs my phone for Apply Pay and either she decided to leave herself a $60 tip in addition to the tip I left her, or the restaurant double charged my card and is refusing to contact me again about it. I spoke to a woman on the phone who said a manager would contact me and reverse the charge. They have not. Given the reviews I highly doubt they are even going to reach out to me. My advice to you, is if this happened to you. Call the police and file a report like I am. This is theft and the management and ownership really don't care.

Patrick S.

Yelp
Good margaritas. Free chips and salsa. Friendly service. They have a few tables outside that are pleasant when the weather is amenable.

Bonnie R.

Yelp
I heard this was a good interior Mexican food place so we tried it for dinner. The wait staff was very attentive and offered suggestions. We had the beef enchiladas and they were good but not our favorite enchiladas. My salmon Veracruz was good but the fish was over cooked. The vegetables were good.

Caitlin T.

Yelp
Meh. Had poor service and mediocre food. Went at an odd hour, so it wasn't busy at all but after waiting patiently for at least 15 minutes, we had to flag down our server to order, she never refilled our drinks or checked on us the entire meal and we to flag her down again to ask for the check. The queso was a little pricey for being basic plain queso. The verde Enchiladas were good but the rice was a little crunchy. The salsa was decent. Didn't love it enough to go again.

Stu S.

Yelp
Massively low quality food. Just ordered takeout fajitas and it's amazing how poor the quality is. Tortillas seem to be days old.

Johanna J.

Yelp
First time visit for me and I had a pleasant experience. I stopped by with a friend for dinner on Thursday and to our surprise, there was live music - what a treat! It doesn't look much from the outside but it certainly has its charm - cute and cozy with polite staff. This location appears to be a local favorite as it was packed. As soon as a table became available, it was quickly filled with another party of guests. Everything ordered was delicious and we saved room for dessert - you must try the cuatro leches! Overall solid experience - worth the trip if you're new in town or visiting.

Michelle T.

Yelp
Wildly great food and service! Love this! Drinks and food were equally impressive; which is rare to find. No compromise in quality here.

Chris S.

Yelp
This is a great hidden gem in southwest Austin. They have an excellent salsa and a nice variety of specialty drinks. They don't play around when it comes to the food either. Hecho en Mexico is serving up some seriously good food out of the kitchen.

Taylor B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot with amazing service, ambience and delicious drinks and apps. I haven't tried a lot of the menu yet but we will be back!

Andreya E.

Yelp
Been coming here for 5 years now and love this restaurant. The enchiladas are my favorite and anything with mole is my husband's. Every time my family visits we take them here and they get the chiles rellenos every time. Sometimes they have live music which can get a little loud but most of the time it's a very chill vibe with good food.

Christie C.

Yelp
Good interior Mexican style food. It's I would say it's on par with Fonda San Miguel. Do not come here if you're looking for 'Tex-Mex'. There are plenty of other options nearby for that style of Mexican food. But if you want a more interior style of Mexican food, in the South Austin area, check this place out! It's delicious! Service is always friendly, too. Sometimes, there's a wait, especially if it's one of their 'Tequila' tasting events. Look at their website to see when these occur. Good for lunch and/or dinner!

Tom L.

Yelp
Why is it so hard to separate checks with a party of 9? This is my favorite place but the service is deplorable. Waiting for them to separate a check has taken longer than the meal. Buzz kill

Wendy L.

Yelp
Had a fantastic dinner here! Delicious tacos. Perfect chips and salsa came with dinner. Terrific margarita, not too sweet, not too sour. Family owned. So good!

Carrie W.

Yelp
Ceivhe had an old refrigerator taste. Fish taco was dry and had a strong fish flavor, not an appetizing one. The chicken in the mole was a big dry chicken breast. Service wasn't that great. Overall not a good experience.

Stephanie A.

Yelp
First time trying this place the other day with the husband. It's a cozy lil restaurant that is clean with an inviting aroma. Chips and Salsa - good thin chips. The salsa served on a spoon which was cute. This salsa tasted of dried chilis, not what I am used to but good none the less. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with verde sauce. I love the cheese they used in it, warm and gooey. The verde sauce had a great flavor - just wished they were more sparing with it. The husband got the Beef tacos which he enjoyed a lot. The rice was light and fluffy and seasoned well which was nice. The refried beans, a bit on the bland side though. We had good customer service and a pleasant experience. We will be back for sure.

John M.

Yelp
From the moment the salsa hit the table, we knew we were in for a treat. Service was excellent, despite a party of 12 was seated just after us....we were still very well taken care of. The food was outstanding, and personally feel they could get away with a much bigger place, based on the quality of the food.... but it was cute and clean....As mentioned the salsa was a new flavor to us, which is rare....a bit sweet with a nice punch of heat...and extremely addictive. We also rolled with the Queso Flameado with Chorizo....was very tasty, with fresh flour tortillas....Also tried the Cigarros de Puerco (Flautas with Pork)....Crispy and Delicious.... Wife went with the Beef Chiladas with Chipotle Crema....Beef had stand alone flavor, sauce was creamy with a bit of heat and overall made for an excellent bite of food. I went the route of the Banderas Chiladas with pork (which more places need to offer, its rare to find and I Love it) with 3 sauces, rice and Black beans....As stated, the pork was ridiculously good, beans were top notch and we both agreed the rice was fresh and very good. Will definitely land on our permeant list with a second visit. The have a Enchilada Mole sampler I just have to try. Great First visit!

David T.

Yelp
Average food! The service was confusing with inexperience server. The ambiance feels like your eating with the people on the next table that's how close the seating is.

Ivis M.

Yelp

Cristian S.

Yelp
Our first time eating here. Really nice place, good food, good attention, service !loved the ambience. We will be back for sure !

Scott G.

Yelp
First service was attentive and knowledgeable. Excellent. Interior was awesome in an unassuming shopping center. Very nice. Suggest complimentary chips to be seasoned with sea salt as they didn't have much taste but were of high quality and non-greasy. Salsa had the appeal of a hot pepper condiment. While good, not exactly your run of the mill table salsa. The Platon de Enchiladas de Mole was what I most wanted to try while the pictures and reviews looked great. However, these moles were very unusual and lacked the intense, earthy, sweet/savory depth and totally different than the silky smooth moles of great dishes. The moles were oddly not strained and resembled a slightly thickened broth again under seasoned. The mole blanco with shrimp was simply not well executed with blanco sauce weird texture of dairy and the shrimps were small and gummy, not very warm. The mole poblano was the best of the 3 but lacked the depth of a great mole. The shredded chicken was plentiful but again wasn't that warm. The Mancha Manteles with pork just wasn't all that tasteful. Maybe it's some sort of other traditional version of interior cooking, but not recommended. If you're looking for cheese, these enchiladas didn't have any or much at all. Again, love the service and all. It's just different than what I was expecting.

Becca T.

Yelp
I love the food and service here! I've only been to the William Cannon location. I would buy jars of their mole if I could. My favorite meal is the 3 enchiladas with their 3 different moles. I'm hungry now just thinking about it!

Alex B.

Yelp
Of you are thinking of visiting. DON'T! Ordered delivery at an extra cost, received only a partial order - missing a mix ceviche - so I called to complaint and the person who answered made an excuse about why it was incomplete and told me to fuck off before hanging up. I am short a ceviche, ($20 ), hungry and wondering if they spit on the food also. Never again.

Josue H.

Yelp
Awesome service and outstanding food!! Truly authentic Mexican food reminds you of home.

Abdullah S.

Yelp
Food: I can say that today I tried the BEST soup ive ever had in my life "crema poplanio". It came with our order of tacos. I also ordered sizzling shrimp fijittas, it came with rice, pico, their special sour cream, and tortillas. And i asked for avocado slices on the side. Their guacamole wasnt my absolute favorite tho, but the salsa was Fiah. We had the mango and the raspberry margarita and they were both great. Service: fantastic people working here, we were sat very quickly. They brought the chips n salsa and our drinks immediatly. It was a wonderful customer service experience. Atmosphere: lovely authentic feel to it. There it both indoor and outdoor seating, and you cant go wrong in outdoors at October in Austin. We got Ubered in but i noticed plenty of parking spaces in the plaza and the place wasnt really the packed at 1pm on a Saturday. Unfortunately, we got sat really close to the bathroom which kind of blocked the hallway when our server is taking/brining our food. It was a few times where people vocally excused themselves to the waiter. Overall 5 Service 5 Food 5 Atmosphere 4.5

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Great interesting menu, great service. I'm looking forward to returning. Was recommended by friend and they were right! Mole!!

Raquel O.

Yelp
Busy night we got one of the last available tables but were greeted by server pretty quickly. Server was super friendly. Ambiance was a little loud because it was busy and there was some live music for a small space. I ordered a Sangria and I loved it, sweet and fruity. We ordered the queso flameado with chorizo and it was really good. The chorizo definitely had good flavor! This was probably my favorite part of the meal. The table got chips and salsa and salsa was ok. Ordered the bite size tacos Al Pastor and these were not traditional Al Pastor, didn't even have pineapple, just meat and cilantro.

Michael M.

Yelp
Some of the very best interior Mexican food in Austin. The enchiladas are so much more flavorful than the big "go-to" Austin Tex-Mex place you probably know, and the other dishes are top-notch as well. Atmosphere is fantastic too. It's a neighborhood gem and worth the drive from anywhere in Austin.

jaybird junior j.

Yelp
Nice food and tequila selection! Friendly team service. No waiting around for your one server. The Banderas enchiladas are good if you can't decide on what kind you get all 3. Good fresh guacamole too. A neighborhood favorite.

Julia C.

Yelp
We had ordered take-out from them a couple times during the pandemic. The food is always great. The atmosphere of the restaurant is casual and fun. Everything we've ordered has been really good. Particularly, a spicy soup, enchiladas in mole sauce, and the salad. Yum! Can't wait to go back! Make sure to go early before dinner rush. It can get super busy.

Kristy W.

Yelp
From the queso to the enchilada and burro, we were all so impressed including our young kids. The service was really good as well.

Denise H.

Yelp
Great! Yummy. Surprising gem. Good mole, interesting menu. A michelada drink that has a shrimpy cocktail heaped onto a beer can that is fun and spicy-tasty. What a fun idea! And I am no mole expert but I loved there trio so much and it hit the spot for me.

Diane V.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I got the guac and queso as well as the banderas beef enchiladas and everything was perfect. Reasonably priced

Avelina A.

Yelp
The food was good. Their staff was friendly. My husband and I both enjoyed the restaurant. We plan to go back.

Mary F.

Yelp
Good food, but wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to eat here. Happy Hour is 3-6 daily. Will definitely come back.

Dhwanil S.

Yelp
Have passed by through this place many times and wanted to try it out so stopped by. Really wanted to like this place but it seems it lacks a lot of things. First we ordered water with no ice, server stills brings with ice and later says will replace it but forgets entire time. Second their sala is like one straight from Costco which is a major negative for me at any Mexican place. For food we ordered Buenos do coliflor which is basically fried cauliflower and it was very bland. We asked for some more drizzle of sauce for which they charged us $3 more which is insane and after that too they brought it with wrong sauce. I would say don't waste your money on this one. Veggie Enchiladas were okay too. Had better before. Only good things was soap arzana which was more spicy than usual but we liked it. I would pass on this one.

Michael R.

Yelp
Great food, really attentive service, and a very nice atmosphere. Hecho en Mexico is a must when you're in South Austin and you want really great and interesting Mexican food. Everything on the menu is outstanding - we particularly like the enchiladas.

Adriana B.

Yelp
Great Service and food! Not texmex but original Mexican, almost feels like a home cooked meal. Love that place!

Cesar G.

Yelp
Just came back from the doctor with food poisoning to bed rest after eating @ Hecho en Mexico restaurant located in William Cannon. Mix ceviche and cigaros de puerco almost kill me. I want to vomit just thinking of this place. Also, the manager is rude and entitled. If you thinking of eating here, skip it, save yourself. You are better of licking the side walk.

Anita T.

Yelp
We have been going to Hecho for years and have never had a bad meal! My favorites are the Mole and the Azteca soup! They are the best!!! Service is excellent and friendly!

Martin M.

Yelp
A noisy place; two electric guitarists were playing standards in a room too small for the volume they were cranking out. Those I was dining with had to shout to each other. I mentioned this to the manager, who said he'd ask the musicians to tone it down a bit, but that didn't happen. Didn't see the manager after that either. This place also charges what it calls a "Credit Card Service" fee; in my case, it was $1.95 on a $65 bill. I saw no mention of this on the menu, but then again I wasn't looking for it. Fee creep . . .

Suzanne W.

Yelp
Great food and cocktails! A favorite of mine that I never tire of. The mole is delicious and margaritas are too.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Staff was extremely helpful and attentive. The place has a very chill vibe and was greeted with smiles. I'm sure Mexican food differs a bit depending on where you go but in my opinion this doesn't taste like Authentic Mexican food at all. I imagined my Abuelitas cooking when I read the name and unfortunately was something very different.

Nick G.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best alternative, Mexican restaurants close to Oak Hill! The food is creative, different, and consistently Good! I especially love the spicy soups, which alternate from time to time which keeps things really interesting!

Jamie P.

Yelp
This review is only based on their happy hour drinks. We ordered a margarita on the rocks and another one frozen. Both tasted really fresh, which I appreciate because some places have awful marg mixed. They were a decent size for only $6 each. We also got a Tecate for $3. Wells are $5. Their chips and salsa come free with any purchase. We'll definitely be back! Looking forward to trying their food sometime.
