The 38 Best Restaurants in Melbourne | Eater

"Sandwich shops have been springing up like mushrooms around the city since the beginning of the pandemic, but Hector’s Deli predates the trend. The shop focuses on improving classics rather than inventing new flavor combinations. You’ll find a solid chicken sandwich, for example, consisting of golden schnitzel lathered in tarragon butter, lettuce, and pickle mayo, all overflowing out of a potato bun. Check out the sweets menu for donuts and apple fritters too. The original location is in a residential part of Richmond, and there are two more shops in South Melbourne and Fitzroy." - Audrey Bourget

You could easily walk by the place and miss it. The inside is lovely with limited seating and tables to dine in but it's a spacious place. The place has a good vibe and staff are friendly. I had the mushroom melt sandwich and went with the toasted version -- O.M.G...so tasty and toasted to perfection! You can get the sandwiches fresh but I would need convincing to not go the toasted direction. Definitely going back to try the other sandwich varieties on the menu. Their donuts was yummy too.

This is the best place to go to eat in Melbourne hands-down. I go out of my way, and risk missing my flight to go there. The team are friendly and the food is top tier. The fried chicken is my favourite, but the maple glazed donuts are pretty close.

These big boys are some of the messiest sandwiches I have ever eaten, it feels like a little victory if you walk away without spilling or dripping a little something on yourself. They are also incredibly delicious, the team have really nailed the classics here. Their chicken sandwich goes crazy, it’s ridiculous how big that piece of chicken and I love it.

Can’t recommend these sandwiches enough!! They were freshly made with mouth watering ingredients. We ordered the Beef and Pickles and the Tuna melt. (5 STARS) We arrived 12:30 at peak hour on a Saturday with a long line out of the door. After ordering we only waited around 15 minutes for our sandwich! Which was impressive considering how busy it was. Around 1pm it died down, and there was no more line.

the vegan sandwich here is so good! i usually avoid salad sandwiches as they can be quite boring, but hector's is amazing. it has a great balance of sauce and ingredients and is super filling. the vibe is great and service was super fast. i just wish they had some other vegan options, but i'll definitely be back for this sandwich

The beef and pickle toasties was good. Got cheese on it and liked that. Added Hector's sauce and that was a bit much. Too salty with the pickles so I think it distracted from the meat. I think it is a bit over priced for what it is. Don't get me wrong a good sandwich. But over 20 for one is a bit much in my opinion. If you are in the area check it out but no need to travel to get it. Other things on the menu sounded good. Some staff super friendly and others not so much.

We ordered the beef and pickled with hectic sauce, hot honey salami, iced latte, and iced long black. Everything was good, but the beef and pickles were absolutely phenomenal! Just one thing, hot honey salami packed a punch and too spicy for my taste but still yum :) The coffee was perfectly nutty and sweet. Definitely coming back!

I occasionally visit for their glazed donut and honestly, it hits right every time. I personally think their toasted sandwiches are too salty and have too much sauce so I recommend the fresh ones if you’re looking for something less stimulating. Hot choc was on the thicker/stronger side, more leaning toward dark choc and it sells well.
