I was pleased to have my first Hector's experience last night, dining with some friends who were just back from a weekend in Chicago and who both happen to be regulars at this 'Tosa institution.
Maybe we just were in at the right time -- after the Packers game but before Sunday night football -- but after reading reviews I was questioning if we would receive similar "slow" service. Not so in our case. The bartender promptly greeted us with chips, salsa, and was back quickly with drinks. The server was equally prompt and super friendly; checking on us several times during the meal to ensure everything was well. Perhaps the most entertaining part of my visit was my first interaction with Marquette legend "Freeway," who was hanging out in the bar area last night.
My boss @ work -- who has lived in the Milwaukee area 20+ years -- filled me in on what he knew & recalled his positive interactions with Freeway going back to the late 80's. I know this guy might annoy some folks or creep others out, but he seems to be a sweet person with a ridiculous encyclopedic sports knowledge -- seriously, he was spouting off the '96 Packers Super Bowl team starting lineup out of nowhere. Amazing.
OK, back to Hector's...now to the food -- it was just OK. Not great but not terrible. The taquitas were famazing; delicious eggrolls filled with a salsa-like cream cheese mixture, capable of exploding if you took too big of a bite. I had beef tacos with rice & beans; I like getting a choice of flour, corn, or hard shell corn shells -- all of which Hector's offers. The tacos (and much of the menu in fact) were quite "American-ized," with only a few of what I would call 'authentic' Mexican items on the menu. Tasty but again, not the best in the world.
You could probably do better, but you could also do worse with Hector's. The prices are a bit steep for my liking, but it is better than hitting the drive-thru at Taco Bell. Overall it is about on par with Rudy's Mexican Cantina (off Water St.) -- ultimately, I will probably be more likely to dine at Bel Air Cantina or Conejitos -- but if I am in 'Tosa and looking for decent Mexican food, I would stop in again.
