To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. To preface, we dined here on Christmas day with a prefix menu. We both understand how difficult holiday service can be, however, for £165 per person (tip, tax, drinks & water not included) at a Gordon Ramsey establishment, we expected more than this lackluster dinner.
First, the restaurant seemed extremely over committed and understaffed, especially for a busy service day. The kitchen was consistently backed up and our server looked like she had way too large of a section.
Here is our experience:
We started with four small bites, which were nothing to write home about. Second course was an appetizer of two underwhelming small scallops in the shell. Perhaps the wrong choice of the three options given, but you would hope each dish would be equally as delicious. Keep in mind none of these dishes were relatively substantial in size or susstinance.
While we waited for our mains, the party of six next to us (who received and finished their apps after we did) received their entrees before us. Very poorly timed coursing to say the least. Between the appetizer and entree being delivered, we waited roughly 40 minutes. By the time our main course was delivered we were 1 hour 20 minutes into service.
We frequently observed the surrounding tables not receiving their silverware before the meal, and left sitting with hot food on the table. In order to avoid this we asked three different staff members (including our server) to bring over the utensils while we waited. Our requests were forgotten/ignored and we received our Beef Wellington only to wait two more minutes before getting any utensils - quite avoidable especially since we asked multiple times for them prior. Overall, the Wellington was probably the saving grace as far as food was concerned, but we weren't blown away.
For dessert, we chose the holiday pudding (not great) and the cheesecake, which was good, but it was definitely not a traditional "cheesecake" (just sweet whipped cheese in a ramekin). The hot chocolate we order was comparable to a store bought packet. Tasted more like steamed milk without much flavor.
Finally, and this one was the biggest disappointment, they ended service with a cheese board that consisted of ONE piece of cheese and THREE little raspberries. Of all cheeses, they chose probably the most divisive of all- a STRONG blue. We couldn't even eat it and a lot of the tables surrounding us barely touched theirs. Very poor choice especially considering that it is the last impression of the meal and something we were looking forward to.
Toward the end of the night the table seating seemed to slow down, but despite many people having left, we still felt unattended to in many ways. Some instances include having to repeatedly ask for the silverware, dirty napkins being left on our table even after plates were cleared, not being checked on until our food was nearly finished or finished completely, etc. At no point did management come over to address the delays in the service, which EVERY table was experiencing. Considering the rate of service, we requested the bill once the cheese was dropped at our table and it did not arrive until about ten/fifteen minutes later.
Our whole experience was almost three hours long - NOT by our choice. For context our reservation was at 7:15 and we paid the bill at 10:00. For a five course meal (two of which being very small bites) we felt this was shocking, considering our reservation slot allotted a two hour time limit for a party of two.
Being from a country with a big tipping culture we understand and have NO issues with giving gratuity, especially on a holiday. In fact, we expect to tip. I can count on one hand how many times we have ever tipped under 20% in the US due to poor service. However 15% was added on the bill (more than the standard 10% in the UK). In addition to the meal, which we paid for in full upon reserving, we got two water bottles and a hot chocolate, bringing the additional charges to £73. All of the other tables paid with a hostess or manager but our server came over with the card reader. While the tip amount was optional, we would have felt extremely uncomfortable asking to reduce it. We did not. Ultimately, we know a server cannot control the kitchen delays, but she (and the support staff) did not handle the evening with the attention or consideration that would normally be expected for these circumstances.
Overall, for the high price this was one of the more disappointing meals we've had, especially when we looked forward to a nice Christmas meal on holiday and were excited to try a Gordon establishment in London. Maybe on a regular day it would be different/better but we would be hard pressed to take that risk again.
